Asked to leave the testing center during CPA exam for having bad gas

    Posted: 10 May 2020 03:47 PM PDT

I sat for FAR yesterday but wasn't allowed to finish my exam and am still shaking. So I knew going in that I was having some stomach issues but I honestly didn't think it was going to manifest itself in such a terrible fashion. I made it through the first couple of testlets with minimal issues, maybe ripped a couple of quiet ones here and there.

I know people around me could hear them given how quiet it was in the room, but I honestly didn't care and just wanted to get through my exam. But when I made it to the sims it hit me. I let out a couple of silent ones I thought would go unnoticed but I caught a whiff shortly after and knew that I had committed a grave error. A girl sitting a few seats away quietly got up and I could see through the window that she was talking with the proctor. The look of disgust on her face had me convinced she was complaining about me and that maybe they would try to give me hell. The girl came back in plugging her nose and sat back down at her seat without acknowledging my existence.

The proctor quietly came in shortly after with a can of Glade and started to spray the room. They told me I would need to go to the restroom and that upon my return I could resume my exam. So I did as I was told and made sure I did the deed and got it all out of my system before I returned. Well, it seems like I didn't finish the job because a couple of minutes in and I ripped the loudest, earth shattering fart you have ever heard. My face went red and the girl instantly got up again and went to the proctor.

The proctor came back in and told me that because I was being so "disruptive" I would have to forfeit my score and that I would need to reschedule. I was asked to shut down the computer and to leave the testing room.

I am livid and nervous about losing my REG credit. I don't know what to do about rescheduling due to this pandemic. I mean, I understand that my gas trouble was making it difficult for others around me to focus, but they should be a bit more accommodating. It makes me sick thinking I blew it in there. Does anyone have a similar experience or advice for how I can proceed with my goal to become a CPA?

    I fucked up.

    Posted: 10 May 2020 04:06 PM PDT

Not being in an office environment really fucked with my productivity and I slipped up on the monthly close tasks. This week I have a meeting with my direct supervisor and controller. I wasn't given any type of heads up, just a Google invite. I'm not sure what to expect and am worried to what this will lead to. if they'll will start the process of looking for a replacement. I guess I'm looking for some advice, a perspective, and what to expect.

How should I approach and prepare for this meeting?

Curious if other firms have released anything and am just curious overall. I wont find out my start date for KPMG FS Audit till "late Spring/early Summer" so im just using my downtime to study right now and hope to take FAR June 2nd.

Where to go after Big 4?

    Posted: 10 May 2020 09:55 AM PDT

    Hey all,

I've been at one of the big four for about a year now, and I only stayed this long so that I have at least a year on my resume. This shit ain't for me.

I'm ready to start looking for a new job, but honestly i think working in big four has scared me off of tax and accounting completely. I hate all of it and even though I passed one part of the CPA, I have no interest in going on to pass all four.

Has anyone ever left big four to do something completely different? I don't even know where to start looking. I've tried signing up for websites like indeed, but you always have to enter a job title and I don't even know what job title i'm looking for at this point. I'm very creative and would hope to do something that can play to those skills, but I don't really know where that can tie into the business world.

Looking forward to hearing your own experiences!

“Accountants always have jobs!” , Is that statement true anymore?

    Posted: 10 May 2020 08:53 PM PDT

Hey, guys! I'm a 2nd year accounting major from Canada. I have always been paranoid about committing to a 4 year degree that would not land me a " relevant job" upon graduation. I don't want to exhaust myself physically, emotionally & financially while accumulating student loan debt to be underemployed in the future. I looked into comp sci & programming but couldn't handle the high level of math. However, I still enjoy working with numbers. I heard from some people that it's difficult to get an accounting job in Canada if u don't have top grades, internships & connections. Canada has a small economy & a high concentration of highly qualified accounting professionals which creates intense competition. If I maintain a high average for the last 2 years & manage an internship, would I be alright? Should I do a masters in USA & try to see if the grass is greener there? I would really appreciate some insights.

TLDR; is the high employability of this profession a myth or it's rooted in truth?

New Accounting grad, been a nurse for the last seven years and it’s time to make the career change. Advice?

    Posted: 10 May 2020 06:57 PM PDT

    Hi everybody,

I decided to join this sub since I am a new grad in the excited phase of switching from nursing to accounting. They both have their own demons.

Anyway, I have no accounting experience and I did not do an internship. I'm thinking about starting to study for my CPA and taking one of the exams before I apply for jobs.

Does anyone have any advice on how to make myself marketable with no experience in the industry? I'd like to get into a public firm and do tax accounting to get the experience. I'm pretty scared to move into something new, I'm used to feeling confident whenever I start a nursing job and now I'm gonna be back at the bottom of the fish bowl again.

Thanks I'm advance for any advice!

Edit: I'm a 27 year old male looking to work in the Phoenix area

    California CPA license approval

    Posted: 10 May 2020 08:19 PM PDT

Has anyone gotten their CPA license application approved during the COVID 19 stay at home order? I've been waiting for about 2 months ( they received my last document on March 11th) I have emailed the state board but they just say they can't say whether it is being reviewed or not so I'm just wondering if anyone has gotten theirs reviewed and approved?

[CAN] How difficult is it to obtain a position in the CRA as an auditor?

I have been looking at this for a while, it's just that the job posting has not come yet up for where I am (Vancouver, BC). I am looking at the AU02 position.

I have been in public since September 2017 and expect to get my CPA letters within the next few months. Can anyone with experience in CRA weigh in?

What does the statement " DTA should be created only if the company has reasonable taxable profits in future". Does it mean if company predicts to have loss it cannot create DTA today?

    Posted: 10 May 2020 10:36 PM PDT

    Query 1

Company has created a DTA. In the next year the company has a loss as per tax accounts but profit as per books, Can it still create a DTL to reverse the DTA effect.

    Query 2:

IF at the end of year 1 in which the company created DTA, it assessed that it will have a loss in subsequent year and no reasonable taxable profit as per tax books (I.e company account books will have profit) will it have to right off the DTA immediately.

Relocating to NYC. Can you guys please help me determine my salary worth?

    Posted: 10 May 2020 06:22 PM PDT

Ok currently I'm a CPA, Macc with 4.5 years experience. All of that is with an asset Manger. I work in the corporate accounting side of the business. I'm a senior Accountant.

I do the typical month end close, management reports, client invoicing, I over see AP, I help with annual audit and quarterly tax prep.

I intend to stay in the asset management field. I originally started asking recruiters for 110k base plus 15% bonus. This was before Covid19. So my question is, assuming everything is back to normal, I'm I asking for too much? If so what should I be asking for?

Applying for CPA License (AB - Calgary) with DUI

    Posted: 10 May 2020 09:47 PM PDT

    Hi All,

I made one of the biggest mistakes of my life which may have costed me my entire future as a CPA.

I got a DUI conviction and was wondering if anybody else in the CPA (Canadian - Alberta) has ever applied / knows someone who has applied that has a DUI and revealed this information to the review committee.

I plan to be as honest as possible but would like some clarity beforehand just in case to calm my nerves. I am planning to write the CFE in September 2020 or May 2021.

    Thanks,

    Federal Audit (KPMG) career path

Taking the CPA exams even though I don't plan to work in public?

    Posted: 10 May 2020 10:33 AM PDT

So- I got an online degree for accounting and am finishing up my MAcc this month. I currently work as an intern in the GL department of a software company. I like the job a LOT, it's really about perfect for me. But, I have a strong feeling they are going to lowball me when it comes to offer time after graduation.

Here's what I want out of life- I want to live in a LCOL area, telecommute, pick my hours and not do customer service for most of my job.

How the heck do I pull that off? I understand that the stars will pretty much have to align perfectly for that to happen. I care deeply about work/life balance- but wouldn't mind sacrificing that a little bit now to get into a better position later.

I don't plan to mention to my boss that I've graduated- but instead was planning on using the next few months to study a ton for the CPA exams. I feel that because I have an online degree, I have to prove myself with decent exam scores even if I never actually get enough experience to be a CPA.

Am I on the right track?

What’s the job market in Nashville like?

    Posted: 10 May 2020 08:56 AM PDT

I never see anybody talking about Nashville, but I imagine there's a decent market for accountants and auditors there. I have family there, and would be interested to move for work in public.
