If you are looking for startup co-founders and you do not have any trusted people in your immediate circle such as programmers, SEO specialists and such, how do you go about giving away equity to someone you do not know hoping they have great character and work ethic?

How do you pitch your startup? I’ve witnessed hundreds of pitches throughout the years, here are a few tips I’ve picked up. I hope this helps a few of the budding startups on this subreddit.

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 08:42 AM PDT

    Tip 1:

Make sure you know your stuff. You need to know the ins and outs of your vertical, and it's model. Is it scalable, how will you make money? What are your competitors doing, how are they doing the same thing? How can you improve on what they're doing? What makes you different?

    Tip 2:

Do not be afraid to ask. What are you asking for, and how will it help your business? If it's money, what are you going to use the money for?

    Tip 3:

Who are you? Investors invest in people. What have you and your team accomplished? Don't be afraid to humblebrag. What traction has your team made since the inception of your startup? What is your favorite tip for pitching?

How much equity should we give?

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 08:54 PM PDT

So far, it's myself (all-hats wearing founder) and a CTO. We just interviewed a potential addition to our team. He's got technical chops, as well as some good ideas around growth strategy and new features.

    Do we

    • have him help out with everything? Or focus on one thing? What specific would you put him on?

    • what should we offer him? He wants equal partnership - good or bad idea? If we only give him equity, how much?

    • he's very smart but also dominating. I'm concerned he could be hard to work with. Thoughts?

    • how to set this up? Will Clerky or Gust be able to handle this for us or do we need a lawyer?

    Thanks in advance!

Hiring someone to help me with my startup. How to go about sharing the code?

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 07:08 PM PDT

I have been building a single page app with React and reached the point where I need to have someone more experienced help me with the code (I am a beginner, a few months through). I am a bit worried about sharing the whole code base. At the same time, I don't think this person would be of much help if they didn't have access to everything.

Should I just share the whole github repo (with protections such as commiting to master blocked) with this person? Then they'll be able to download it to their machine and forever have the code? What if at some point I no longer wish to work with this person; they'll still have the whole code.

Of course, there'll be a contract that forbids them from using the idea. But is this really how things are done?

    Please advise a scared beginner.

    How to furnish a startup?

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 07:53 PM PDT

Are there certain desks from ikea or other places, types of chairs for SDR's and AE's you guys would recommend?

We have about $6,000 to furnish an office and want to get reasonable furniture for 10 staff.

We want matching gear so not really chasing used furniture unless it's from one source.

    Any suggestions?

    Slow Down in Social Engagements

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 01:34 PM PDT

I just wanted to touch base with the entrepreneurs who run their own socials. Are you noticing a significant slow down in engagements?

I'm seeing 60% or more drop. If you are seeing this as well, I assume it's primarily that everyones organic feeds are filled up with covid based information and non virus stuff is getting buried.

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 02:06 PM PDT

Hi guys, i want to start a small online business directory site and i am wondering the ways to accomplish it. I already bought Listingpro for wordpress but i am not sure if i will figure out how create a professional website. I am currently studying and i am not able to dedicate myself to this and i would like to ask a question... Is it better to hire a web developer to build from scratch or hire someone to finalize my wordpress purchase with listingpro? I am really confused. Looking forward hearing back from you guys!!

Is it a good time to launch my mobile game?

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 01:01 PM PDT

I've been working on a mobile game for a year almost. Just ironing out some of the last problems and it is a solid MVP. It is time to launch soon but.

I understand that more people are gaming and it would probably gain exposure better now than ever. However, it relies on rewarded video advertisements for revenue and I'm worried about if the profitability of that is affected in the economy that is taking a thrashing at the moment. Also, ideally I would be hoping for VC or a partnership of some sorts if I was lucky enough for it to see some solid validation, but again, with how things look right now I'm worried if it just might not be the right time.

    Thanks

Design Applications In-house or Outsource [How do I do this]

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 11:00 AM PDT

    Hi,

My wife and I are thinking about getting into a startup in the next year or two. It has been something I have wanted to do my entire life, but recently have started to take it more seriously. We have an idea we both want to pursue (nothing super complex or risky). We both agree it is not something we should rush into so we have decided to say no earlier than a year from now. In the meantime, we will do research, and get our thoughts and plans on paper. I have been watching courses on financing, accounting, entrepreneurship and so on in order to gather more knowledge on the subject.

Anyway, currently I am a developer for a large corporation and help design and develop some of our internal enterprise applications. I know a lot about development and architecture, and was thinking how I could apply that to the business. Do you think it would be better to just purchase some software like quickbooks or some alternative, or to do the research since I have time and develop something myself?

I know the application will be no easy task, but it might help me learn more about business and how things are done. I could design it to specifically fit the types of metrics I want to know, the needs I have, and my business structure vs buying some generic software. My concern is, I may not know all of the financial reports I may need and will mess everything up in my initial design to the point where it can't be fixed or altered to work. Do you think it will be difficult to learn the appropriate information I need to design an application like this, and in that time-frame? Will I have to integrate with other company systems and my custom solution may not be compatible?

To be clear, I don't doubt that I have the skills to develop it, but just the information and maybe time. Also the business is just a small retail shop with limited products. Hopefully one day may be multiple small retail shops.

    Thanks!

Finding our target audience if our service is too broad

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 03:31 AM PDT

Hi! We are an IT startup company. Our service is to provide software development (mobile, web or desktop application) for businesses. We do different kinds of softwares and web applications depending on what our customers need.

How can we find our target audience with our service not having a specific niche or specific purpose?

    Analytics for a mobile app

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 08:02 AM PDT

    Hey peeps,

We're talking next week about implementing analytics tool for tracking of user behavior in our app (that we are starting to build), anyway we're considering different providers and options.

Do you have experience (both good and bad) and who was your provider? Please let me know what are your thoughts.

We're considering the following based on a reference:
    Mixpanel: https://mixpanel.com/
    Flurry: https://www.flurry.com/
    Localytics: https://www.localytics.com/

Now we're also exploring online and searching for different options.
