Posted: 23 Mar 2020 04:38 AM PDT I have used my AmEx card's "purchase protection" feature a handful of times over the last ~10 years, and always knew it was there if I needed it. But a few months ago I started renting a house. And I got renter's insurance. Sure enough, not long thereafter I accidentally broke an expensive-ish thermal imaging camera I had recently purchased from China, leaving me with a mostly-useless $750 gadget. Purchase protection to the rescue! And that's when I noticed that their policy requires me to file a claim with any other policies I have before they cover anything not covered, up to their cap. From what I understand, it would be imprudent to file a $750 renter's insurance claim. My deductible is $250 and my CLUE report is otherwise empty. It's frustrating that my $200/year renter's insurance policy means that I essentially no longer have use of a credit card benefit. Is there anything I can do, either now or in the future, to change the status quo? One thought I had was to add an exclusion to my renter's policy for individual claims under the credit card purchase protection dollar cap, but I have no idea if that's something a major insurer would even entertain. Note: I'm asking about making purchase protection reasonably useful again. Not getting money for the camera loss. I know that already happened and is over. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 22 Mar 2020 09:06 AM PDT Large businesses and businesses in general need insurance, but if we enter a depression, people might not deem insurance a necessity. Thoughts? [link] [comments] |
Question: Car accident with unknown offender Posted: 22 Mar 2020 08:47 PM PDT My wife was just hit from behind by another vehicle while parked, the car drove off and she didn't get a picture. She sustained whiplash from the incident and may need physio. What are our first steps, options? Living in Ontario, Canada. [link] [comments] |
Immunocompromised going on STD, will I qualify for LTD if this virus continues for months? Posted: 22 Mar 2020 07:38 PM PDT I am heavily immunocompromised and I work in a sales role where I meet with clients daily. I took a week off on Wednesday and have applied for short term disability. My doctor is going to sign off and hopefully I'll be approved. My question is, if this virus persists for months, will I be eligible for long term disability until there is a vaccine or treatment? Can life insurance agents conduct appointments through video calls (i.e. Skype)? Posted: 22 Mar 2020 06:17 PM PDT Hi there, usually agents meet clients face to face but this is a particular circumstance in which people are less inclined to want to meet in person. Is it okay or even legal for me to just have the appointment by Skype? Or am I legally obligated to confirm their health status by visiting them in person? [link] [comments] |
Car insurance background check Posted: 22 Mar 2020 05:01 PM PDT I was involved in an accident and esurance raised my rates from 100 to 250. I am moving onto another insurance company and getting quotes. I called to the dmv to get my driving record and they said they have no accident recorded. Does this mean an insurance company wouldn't be able to see this accident? Could I tell them I have no accident history? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 22 Mar 2020 07:20 AM PDT So, if there are still planes flying, my wife and I are moving back to the states in a month. My mother lives in Colorado, and I plan to stay with her to make sure she's ok during the pandemic (after quarantining and getting a drive through test), my wife will visit her mom and do the same thing in Rhode Island. After a month, we plan to move back to our old apartment in new york Both Rhode island and Colorado have special enrollment periods because of the pandemic. Would it be ok for me to buy a health plan for me and my wife in case we do get sick and need hospitalization using my mom's address in colorado where I plan to live? Would that cover my wife for any hospitalization and emergency she has while she's in Rhode Island? How fast would we have to cancel that plan and start a new one in New York? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 22 Mar 2020 02:40 PM PDT I am 26 and am getting kicked off a parent's work-provided healthcare plan. I paid my guesstimated portion of the total premiums but assume it will be going up now that I'll be solo. I would say 95% of the times I've ever been to the doctor are for preventative reasons, but with age I'm sure this could change. I am trying to pick a plan for myself but there are a million different plans/articles on which way to go. Looking for any advice here on type of plans for my age/health. Any specific links would be appreciated as well! Thanks [link] [comments] |
Switching from Geico to Nationwide. Accident Forgiveness and Rate Stability/Increase Posted: 22 Mar 2020 02:22 PM PDT My wife and I drive roughly 6K miles a year tops as I'm borderline disabled and she's a newer driver who wants to lay low till she gets more confident. Right now we're paying $120 a month with Geico for 100/300 insurance with full coverage, a $500 collision deductible, we reside in NC, and we drive a few year old VW Jetta that we bought for $10K--we have't had tickets in our time of driving, and I've been licensed for 10 years whilst she's been for 18 or so months. Nationwide is offering us basically the same coverage with accident forgiveness for $86 a month--$40 isn't a big difference but every bit counts right now.. Geico offers accident forgiveness for free after 2 years and we've been with them for almost 18 months--so it's time to see if they'll lower it or not and once we hit 24 months we'll get additional cushion if we did ever get into a mess. In the end comparably speaking is Nationwide a decent choice and are they know for jacking up rates for no reason? I'm self employed and my income stopped--so we're trying to save, think short term, and also consider how it'll be long term for all of our choices. A 12 month contract is a long time and I suppose if they jack it up to $120 then we still save--but I figured I'd come here first before I make a change as only until recently did I start driving and have my own insurance so I lack experience to say the least. Insurance is not going to pay out mechanic labor to access parts needing fixed, among other things. Posted: 22 Mar 2020 01:26 PM PDT Was in an at fault accident. I was hit on the front driver side wheel of my truck. Bumper was bent, fender was bent, headlight broke some mounts. The real damage was my wheel, hub assembly, ball joints and tie rod. I was hit hard enough to push the tire into my coil spring. Mechanic didn't remove the wheel yet when the adjuster shows up, so he had no idea if the hub assembly was broken, or any other parts not visible behind the wheel. Truck was taken to a body shop first, new bumper, new headlight, new fender and new paint. I got a call from the body shop asking me what I wanted to do about the wheel, since it was an after market that has since been discontinued. Body shop won't do an alignment until it has a new wheel and the mechanical stuff is done. Truck went back to the mechanic, which showed me the assessment from the adjuster, which is only covering a single ball joint and the time to replace that part alone. Replacing the hub is 2.7 hours, the single ball joint is .3 hours. To access the ball joint, the hub has to be removed and replaced, so the mechanic will be out 2.7 hours to just access the ball joint. I feel like this is not a "making me whole" deal. If they can't find a replacement wheel, I feel they are going to try and offer me a payout on that wheel alone. But I still have a broken wheel. I've done enough mechanical work to know you don't replace just one part. For instance, you don't replace a single brake pad, you have to replace at least the other side as well, which is why they come in packs of two. It's a safety issue. Is there anything I can do or say to encourage them to reassess this? Replacing the upper ball joint only does not feel like my truck be safe to drive again. What can I do about the time for my mechanic? Also, I have a rental which is due to be returned this Wednesday, but the truck is not going to be finished before then, due to the wheel not being available, at which point, I will be without a vehicle and my business suffering due to not being able to show up on job sites. I've expressed my concerns to the insurance company, but they keep saying "Don't worry, our obligation is to make you whole and a safe vehicle to drive." Or "Our adjuster knows what he is doing, please trust his judgment." It's Progressive, by the way. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 22 Mar 2020 07:35 AM PDT Pretty much what the title says. I own both cars, but only one has liability insurance. The other was a project car I've been working on swapping the engine on. I submitted an auto claim on the car that had insurance, but someone mentioned that it might be covered by homeowners. Any information is appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Are employers putting themselves & insurers at risk for Corv- WC Claims? Posted: 21 Mar 2020 08:06 PM PDT As a prior exec at a top 5 WC company I believe there could be a massive amount of new claims for Corv. I know all states have their own laws and regulations... and case law, but I think there is some huge risk here. Just saying lots of time loss claims and medical payments. What do others think.... Posted: 21 Mar 2020 08:37 PM PDT As part of my contract, I purchased insurance through my previous car dealership Express credit auto. My vehicle was deemed a total loss. The issue is that neither the Account Management department nor the insurance department will provide me with a total loss letter or statement advising of this. I paid the $500 deductible as requested but I am unable to get a written statement or total loss letter stating or that the vehicle was deemed a total loss or a written statement stating that my account was closed pending insurance claim. It has been over 60 days since the initial claim was made and greater than 60 days since the deductible was collected. I am unable to receive any information from the insurance department at all. The only thing they say they can do is send my payment history. They haven not responded to the voice messages that have been left nor will they respond to my e-mail requests. The I'm trying to purchase a car through another dealership but they won't let me lease a car unless they get that letter What should I do? [link] [comments] |
