Y Combinator resources for growth. This might help you to improve your skills.

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 08:19 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

While a lot of us are staying at home, we want to act before you start talking with your furnitures. You have plenty of time that you couldn't find before to learn new skills and improve yourself. That's what I am doing these days, there is a lot of free content out there and this might be a great chance. For those who don't know YC: Y Combinator

So, we did participate in YC Online Startup School. There are plenty of great resources that YC compiled over there and we thought this sub might appreciate the Growth list.

I must say this list is created for YC SuS W20 and we cross shared at our platform Jooseph which is basically a place where you can find collections of links to the different resources for a topic.

    Who is this list for;

This list is mostly for entrepreneurs and somebody who works at/with startups.

    Here's the list:

    Growth by YC

Here's some of my favorite resources at the list:

    1. Startup = Growth
    2. On Growing: 7 Lessons from the Story of WeChat
    3. How to Get Users and Grow - Alex Schultz - CS183F
    4. 9 Ways to Build Virality into your Product - Gabor Cselle

    I hope it helps,

    Here's other related list with this subb;

Some people begin a business because of desire some others because they don’t have another option.

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 11:14 AM PDT

As many of us know the scenario of economic recession is very high and many unprepared people will have to start a business without any experience and probably very low budget. What would be the best advice or idea you could give them? Educational advice also applies, especially for young people. Thanks

    Personal guarantee question

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 02:44 PM PDT

    Personal guarantee on LLC loans

    Hey guys,

So I started a software development LLC with two other partners. So it is agreed that I will be the technical partner on the team and they will finance and do the marketing. It is agreed that I will not be responsible for paying for anything for the company. I've done some research and it seems that anyone that owns more than 20% is usually required to sign for opening the bank account, opening a company credit card, and getting SBA loans. Does that mean I would be needed to sign a personal guarantee for all of those? Just wanted to see if there's anything I would be able to do to not be liable for any defaulted loans.

    Thanks!

Should I quit my job right now?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2020 09:55 PM PDT

I know it probably sounds crazy to quit while many people are fighting to keep their jobs.

Job Background: I work in IT and make about 90k/year. Currently working 100% remote due to quarantine.

Reason for leaving; 1. I've been able to make my salary (~100k) in the last 2 months from stock trading during these volatile times. Mostly from shorting market before it dumps.

    1. My wife and I started an ecom business in November 2019 and so far 2020 has been really good for our business. This business can generate 20k+ profit per month and we plan on growing it.

    2. I've really gotten to the point where I have no motivation to keep working at my job and I just can't bring myself to get a lot of work done.

So my question is, if you were in this scenario would you be willing to quit your job and take a leap of faith in these kind of conditions going on in the world today? I think without these conditions I would feel ok quitting now but with this affecting the world in the way that it is I'm not so sure.

    Starting a business Post Covid19

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 01:58 PM PDT

    Hi All,

I am an IT Consultant and mostly I work with organisations fixing their IT Operations. I had a couple of engagements with companies but unfortunately C19 happened and like a lot of other businesses everything went stopped. I will post my LinkedIn profile link below in case anyone wants to find out more about me and to validate what I mention about by background.

This all got me to thinking that I need to have another business to have an alternate stream of income, or a better source of income, and also I need to prepare for what the new world post C19 may look like. Since a lot of successful companies like (WhatsApp, GroupOn, Uber etc) were started soon after the last 2008 recession so I thought why not again this time around?

Anyway, to do some research to identify a potential business opportunity and how the future may look like I started putting this google sheet together. Basically the sheet details the

    1. Products / Services we buy now,
    2. If it was impacted by C19 and whether we were able to mitigate the impact somehow
    3. How would that product or service look like in the post C19 world
    4. I have added a column at the end; where you can increase or decrease the number to UpVote or DownVote, depending upon how you agree with the data added in the row

I am hoping collectively we can gather some data which will allow us to see where there might be an opportunity to develop and offer a new or improved product or service. The document is free to edit, I intended to keep it that way so people anywhere can freely use the data and benefit from it as they see fit.

I am sharing it on some other forums as well for more input. Please add in details based upon your personal perspective and let's find some business opportunity to serve the new world.

Link to Google Sheet - Shape of the world post C19

    Thanks,

What can a soon-to-be college graduate do to get ahead in light of the current market?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2020 06:18 PM PDT

    Hey all.

I'm a soon-to-be college graduate with high hopes of getting into the startup game early. I've worked hard gaining mentors, knowledge, and advice to move out of where I'm comfortable and to venture out into the startup world. I've been actively applying to companies (looking for 1-10 or 11-50 people maximum) and will literally answer phone calls all day, organize files, or even mop the floors just to be in the same room as these people.

As we all can agree, the market is not great right now. Companies are starting to close up and people are getting furloughed or even laid off. In light of this, I am trying to get ahead of the game by gaining as many online certifications as I can, reading, taking notes, etc.

What else can the reddit world advise me to do in able to get ahead of the curve once the economy stabilizes and companies start to open their doors again? Should I learn to code? Online marketing lectures? any books you recommend? Any companies I should look into?

Please help a fella out. We've got another month of limbo and this is a huge opportunity to get a head start.

A little more info: I am interested in wearable technology startups. Could be for wellness, medicine, clothing, etc. Preventative medicine related as well.

    Thanks to all for reading.

Please tell me if this question is unusual...

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 01:34 PM PDT

Had an intro 15 min chat with a mentor at an accelerator program I applied to. He later decided to ask me if how I was getting data for my MVP; told him I was using an API for the time being until we get funding to customize/create our own database. He then asked me what kind of API, told him it was a recommendation based API. He then further asked me what was the exact name of the API. What?

Said I wasn't at the liberty to discuss that with him. He told me he feels this is a red flag, I responded telling him I've been advised not to disclosure until down the road. His mood throughout the chat changed for sure.

I've talked with people from different programs and not once has anyone asked what exactly was my API, I don't understand why he would want to know that within the first 10 mins of chatting with him for the first time.

    Thoughts anyone?

    INTERVIEW WITH ENTREPRENEUR

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 12:23 PM PDT

    Hi all!
I'm a business student and for my business strategy course I need to interview a business owner. I'm searching online, rather than walking into a local business because the COVID-19 pandemic has caused many businesses in my area to close. I would appreciate it if anyone with spare time could answer a few (6-10) questions about your business, how you go about making decisions, etc. I'd be willing to speak over the phone, do a zoom video call, or I could send you the questions and you can answer them and send them back to me by the end of this week. The information I receive from the interview with you will be presented to my professor and classmates.

If you are interested in helping me out with this please send me a message and we can work something out. Your help is much appreciated! Thank you!

Trying to figure out if I'm paying for my domain twice with GoDaddy and Yahoo Small Business?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 12:01 PM PDT

TL;DR: Need to figure out if GoDaddy is just the domain registrar, and Yahoo is hosting, or if I'm getting charged twice for the same thing.

    Context:

    • .com is at Weebly
    • GoDaddy has the .com domain. DNS Management on their site says nameservers are not managed by them. Nameservers point to YNS(x).Yahoo.com.
    • Yahoo Small Business for the .com is on their Domain Annual Plan. A Records point to Weebly.

    Thanks for responding.

10 Tips for Personal Branding on Social Media

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 08:06 AM PDT

Are you asking yourself regularly if you can improve your own personal branding on social media or are you at the stage where you are asking yourself if you should be rebranding yourself completely?

We can always be improving our personal branding on social media but sometimes we need something different, a different way to see things. How we brand ourselves online is important and can change the trajectory of our lives in a positive way!

I believe that your personal brand and what you do with it can be the difference between success and failure. I was recently speaking to world class business coach and author Alan Weiss who said if there was one thing that he would put at the top of his list of things to do to build your business was to constantly work on your brand!

I would like to share with you Dr. Rick Goodman's 10 Best Personal Branding Tips that will boost your social media profile and increase your business.

Dr Rick's Tips for Personal Branding Tips

    1. Reframe your way of thinking. I have a saying "if you want to win the lottery you have to buy a ticket" If you are going to build your personal brand you have to put yourself out there especially when it comes to social media.
Social media today is not just about posting pictures of your pets or your vacations. The purpose of being visible on social media is for you to demonstrate your true skills across multiple platforms that can be consumed by many diverse audiences worldwide.

    2. Define and determine your superpower. Your personal brand is going to be your road map for where you want to go based on the problems you solve. It's important to assess your strengths and weaknesses in addition to assessing which industry would benefit the most from your expertise. Every client wants four things: Pain relief, solutions, benefits and results. Determine and match your branding and strengths based on your highest and best use and the solutions you provide to your clients.

    3. Define your target market. It's hard to reach your goals if they are not specific. The same goes for your personal brand. You can't build your brand effectively if you have not determined your target market. The sooner you define your audience and target market, the easier it will be to create your brand story which will solve their problems.

As an example, I work with companies to help them increase employee engagement, develop future leaders and grow their business. My target markets are Human Resource Professionals, CEOs and Vice Presidents of Sales. I provide them with solutions that increase engagement and drive profit.

    1. Do your homework. A good friend of mine Sam Richter who is one of the world's foremost sales intelligence and digital reputation experts talks about the importance of doing your homework. Research some of the top experts in your desired target market. Look at the industry publications to see the types of articles they publish.
This way you can start positioning material for yourself. Who do most leaders want to do business with? Someone who knows nothing about their industry or someone who has done their homework?
I think you know the answer…

    2. Put yourself out there! My daughter and I were interviewed on the Today show for a book we had written together called "Jamie's Journey Travels with My Dad". It is a story about my 24 day trip with my sixteen year old who is now twenty-four. We traveled to Europe and the Middle East with no cell phones or technology.
We actually had to talk to each other! When the TV anchor told Jamie "that she appeared to not be very social" Jamie responded, "my dad is everywhere!" Suffice to say, you need to be everywhere and, on every platform, where your target market consumes information.

Those platforms could be LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Reddit. The best platforms in my opinion are your own website, your own podcast and your own blog. People consume information in many different ways, and you need to be prepared to deliver in all of them.

    1. Share and give your knowledge freely. Make sure to share your content with everyone in consumable bites. Our attention spans have gotten shorter over the years so if you can communicate in sound bites your message has a better chance of being retained by your target audience.

    2. Prepare your elevator speech for concise communication. I have been asked by clients over the years what is the purpose of having an elevator speech? My response is simple. You have less than 30 seconds to make an impression on someone. They are judging you from the second you connect with them. If you want to succeed in promoting your brand you only have a few seconds to accomplish this.

We call it an elevator speech because if you were in an elevator and someone asked you what you did for a living? You have from the time the elevator door closes until they get to their floor to explain your superpower. So be concise and succinct with your elevator speech.

    1. Engage a network with others. True engagement is a conversation, it's not just pushing out your content without connecting to your audience. In fact, the more you engage with others on LinkedIn, the more you will be found. You can do this by liking someone's post, making a comment or even leaving a piece of useful information in their comment section that will be appreciated by their audience and will position you as an expert.

    2. Ask for recommendations from friends and colleagues. I always say "if you don't A.S.K. you won't G.E.T." What's the worst thing that can happen? If the person says no, you're in the same position you were a few seconds before. If they say yes you just went to the next level! So why not risk a yes and ask for recommendations from past and present clients and give recommendations as well. True engagement is a two-way street!

    3. Your personal brand follows you. Remember your personal brand is not just online it follows you wherever you go. In today's highly engaged planet everyone is a walking Reporter. Your reputation is everything and the true test is who you are as a person and a brand when nobody is watching.

Leadership is based on how you behave, how you act and how you interact with people. Your story combined with your daily social interactions is what will define your personal brand in the long run.

Lost on exactly where to start at

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 11:32 AM PDT

I have a business idea but not confident

First off I'm 19 and been studying e-commerce since I was maybe 14 and been into computers since I was 7 and just never seemed to take any steps and fell down the wrong path for a few years but anyways enough about me, for the most part I am a confident person but deep down still insecure if that makes any sense.. I have a idea for a fashion brand I want to build I have the design and marketing all mapped out in my head . But I feel like that's not enough to start it . I have had plenty of ideas and just never took action and I'm done making excuses and ready to at least try my hardest I was just kind of looking for some type of tips for a hip hop type of clothing brand marketing mainly through Instagram but maybe also through Facebook and Snapchat eventually others but am a little lost on the first baby steps I need to start doing

I have already created the name/main design for the brand btw

I own a software development company, two of my clients want me to handle their call center operations. What software and pricing?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 11:31 AM PDT

I've owned a software development company for almost 2 years, and since then I've had 2 of my customers recently request that I handle their call center operations. My team is offshore and has pretty solid English, so I'm thinking of giving this a shot.

Do you have any recommendations of cloud based systems that are reasonable in cost? I think I'm going to price at $0.40 per minute with a $200 monthly minimum. Since my company built their software, it should be easy to train internally.

Any suggestions from others in the industry?

License or manufacture on the cheap?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 11:16 AM PDT

I have an idea with a PPA filed for a baby bath product. It's a relatively simple idea that IMO every parent who bathes a child could use (even adults).

I've created a sell sheet and shopped it to about 15 companies with some initial interest. I've basically scrapped it for a few months but I keep going back to it because I believe it's a good product.

I'm considering selling it myself on say on Amazon or via personal website but have reservations that it will be ripped off based on the relative ease it is to manufacture. I don't have a lot of money to play with nor do I care to gamble too much in the current climate. So my ultimate question, is it worth to just get it out there or keep shopping for companies?

    Doomed to fail?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 10:39 AM PDT

I have an idea of a service that today does not have a very high demand but I'm sure it will have in the near future (due to upcoming 5G).

I have built a prototype to have a working proof of concept and met with several investors. All of them said to me:

    1. You have no professional background in the business (true, my current job is not related)
    2. It is a very good idea but some big player will quickly invest and win the competition

I'm quite disappointed because I agree that these comments are true. But in that case, does it mean that we, small entrepreneurs, are limited to invest in very small niches related to our background and that no big company will invest?

Facebook invitation post connected to landing page or direct sign-up?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 10:39 AM PDT

Sorry if this is something very simple for everyone else. I've spent almost a day trying to figure this out. Sometimes can get stuck on the simplest things.

I'm using wordpress with learndash to offer courses.

    • The course summary page has an "enroll now" link that takes the user to the registration screen.
    • The summary page is also kind of a mini-landing page with very little content

    My plan:

I'm planning to give away a tripwire offering (mini-course) for free. The mini-course will at the end have a pitch to buying my main course. (1) Does this sound good? Or is this a bad marketing method? I read that tripwire offerings are supposed to be good but just want to get an opinion from others on the best way to try and sell my ecourse. I'm not a marketing or sales guy but trying my best to learn this and it's very vast.

    The workflow dillema:

    Currently my workflow is:

Facebook groups --> Post about offering free course --> leads to course's summary page --> click enroll now --> registration page --> start accessing.

I'm wondering whether I should try to implement a shorter workflow instead:

Facebook groups --> registration page --> start accessing the course.

    (2) Which is a better workflow?

I'm sorry if this is a very basic question but I'm figuring out some basics in marketing and selling. Thanks a lot for responding!
