Wife and I both self employed - both shut down.

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 09:16 AM PDT

    I'm in Southern California.

So, things are looking rough and I'm trying to keep my head up as much as I possibly can. Month 1, we'll squeeze by on savings. Month 2, I'm not sure. Month 3 is a no go.

My wife is a self employed hair dresser that rented a booth in a salon that is now closed due to covid, mandated distancing and clients canceling. I have a printing business who's majority and most profitable orders were from schools, who ordered shirts and items for their big events, gatherings, and sport spiritwear. Obviously this is all closed down and I'm hearing they aren't even thinking of reopening until summer, if not much longer. My other non school clients are closed or simply not spending their money on physical marketing materials. I get it.

    I have a couple questions:

    1. I have a few orders that paid deposits for school activities before this happened. I'm nervous on buying the inventory, printing the job and then sitting on the order because school finance offices are closed. I don't want to turn my money into shirts sitting in my storage.

    2. I have some jobs that are paid, but events are postponing or simply not imperative to them at this time. They said " take your time, no hurry". They haven't asked for refunds. I'm nervous to buy the materiels and process the jobs. I know I have an obligation, but I'm nervous for my family. I'm trying to just hold on to cash as long as possible. Any advice on this.

    3. What's next? With all that said, what steps should I make at this time to protect my rented home, my electricity, food and overall ability to survive. Not being w2 workers means neither of us can apply for unemployment. I'm trying to figure out ways to adapt by offering smaller orders at discounted pricing, shipping custom items to individuals, things like that but I'm getting zero bites.

All the meanwhile I'm currently uninsured health wise (due to some other financial changes I won't go deeper into) and extremely nervous about getting sick. It's a nightmare. We've isolated and I've prepped us to make as little trips to the store as humanly possible for the next few weeks.

I'm starting to get very nervous, while acting confident around my wife to keep her calm, and some outside opinions from some good redditors would be appreciated.

    Thanks

My mother is a yoga teacher, very soon she will have to shut down her classes due to the COVID-19 situation. I'm trying to find a way she can continue these remotely through video conferencing and would appreciate some suggestions.

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 01:28 PM PDT

As stated, normally she has classes multiple times a week with 10-20 participants. She wants something we can easily set up so that she can do yoga an give instructions in front of a camera to all her clients simultaneously from home. Also a way to implement payments with proofing so only those who have payed can take part in her streams.

Just to add this has to be live. Prerecorded videos don't cut it.

    Thank you

Say the pandemic lasts until August and we slowly roll out of the virus like China is doing now. The economy will be pretty decimated by then so what kinds of small businesses will most be needed post-pandemic?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 05:58 PM PDT

I am thinking that most small businesses and many large businesses will be gone or in really bad shape after five or six months of pandemic lock down. If people were to start small businesses from scratch after this is all over, which do you think will be most in demand?

What is the best nationwide LLC registered agent to use?

    Posted: 22 Mar 2020 12:01 AM PDT

New to starting an LLC. I've found a few cheap registered agent local services but I'd rather use a very credible one that is nationwide or at least has an established reputation. What is best? Northwest is good?

Paying Rent While Closed? Best finance options

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 11:46 PM PDT

I run a community metalworking shop here in LA and like most businesses here, we're shut down. I've got $6k rent due for April at the end of March and no income coming in (and likely no income for April either). I've emailed landlord twice to negotiate a deferred payment plan and haven't heard back. SBA loan at 3.75% sounds decent, but that means I'm gonna have to make an extra $12k down the line to make up for empty space. They're suspending evictions during the outbreak, but that just sounds like the $12k will be due as soon as it's over. Any suggestions on how to force response from landlord (normally he's responsive and pretty decent)? Or any tips on delaying payment? Compounding this is our option to renew comes up next summer and trying not to fuck that up.

How to handle employees who don't take Coronavirus seriously or try to exploit the situation?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 02:39 PM PDT

I have a few small businesses that I run, and we're all in the process of responding to the rapidly evolving Coronavirus situation. For the most part, we're trying to provide our employees accurate up to date information, ensure their safety, and make accommodations wherever possible. We have conveyed to everyone that we plan to continue operations in whatever way is safe. This means mostly working remotely and scheduling those that absolutely must visit the office for a task so there's never more than a few people in the entire office at once.

I have encountered a few employees that fall into two categories. First there's those that won't take this seriously, either because it's a it's a MSM/Dem plot of some kind or they are young and think it won't hurt them (without thinking of others). Second, there's those that from the very early days try to take advantage of the situation (must have time off since they have a cough, but then post their dirt bike trip all over FB).

I already have emails informing me that they will be taking all the federally mandated paid leave they are entitled to, despite the fact they are completely capable of working from home (the trouble cases appear to already be doing almost nothing).

Am I allowed to terminate these folks?

Any other tips or tricks for dealing with folks who don't take our precautions seriously?

I’m pissed. I’m irritated. I’m frustrated. This sub is business owners? Why are people asking about HR 601 ? You have a responsibility and an obligation to read it for yourself, your family and your employees so you know what exactly is going on.

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 08:28 PM PDT

Why would you not read it. Why would you say I heard this and I think it's this. The ONLY thing it doesn't specify is how we apply or fall under the fewer than 50 employees ruling. Read the bill. Use your noggins people.

Is there any other program to file for besides the Disaster Loan? Something that isn't a loan?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 11:27 AM PDT

I am extremely nervous about getting a loan, as my biggest problem right now is no income. Even if I get the loan, if I don't start getting more customers coming in like I used to, all of the loan money will just be wasted away. Are there any grants or other forms of emergency aid I can apply for?

Non-Essential locked down small business owners, how are you taking care of your employees?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 03:47 PM PDT

We are a small business of about 15 people with the average wage at $14/hour. Most of my employees pick and ship orders. Our State was locked down on Friday.

I have made the decision to exhaust all vacation and sick leave for employees of over one year to cover upcoming paychecks. After that we will be advancing paychecks for the next month for those that need it.

Our revenue has been severely slashed like many others, however we are primarily an e-commerce company. It took a lot of hard work, but we have a modest cushion that we are sitting on.

Is there anything else I can be doing to support my locked down employees?

    Section 139 - Tax-Free Relief Payouts?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 09:30 PM PDT

My restaurant has been receiving donations for my staff and the money can be distributed amongst my team under this rule. Does anyone know if there are requirements on how this is to be paid out though? Can I just give them envelopes of money or does it have to be in their paychecks? If it's in their paychecks how do I do it without it getting taxes? I know disclosure to the government is not required, but I still don't want to get caught in anything for improper distribution.

Thanks and best of luck to all of you working through this!

Want to create free (as in beer) and open source software that'll help businesses when things are back

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 07:30 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I am Sumit and I'm in Laos. Pretty much stuck in a hostel, waiting for a visa to Thailand and then get back home in India.

I have a laptop and lots of time. I am a software engineer, working with web technologies (Python/JavaScript). So this is an experiment to put my time to the best purpose I wish to -

    • Please state in 15 words or less what software you needed the most in last couple months
    • Vote the comments as you feel they reflect your needs
    • If possible share examples or similar software out there

If we can get a strong winner, then I'll make a minimal solution for that, for free and it'll be open source.

    My terms -

    • I don't claim to be any sort of unicorn
    • But I'll give my best
    • And I'll share daily progress
    • I have at least 7 full days

I would really appreciate your cooperation. Thanks and stay safe

question about best way to approach small business owners with my proposal

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 09:05 PM PDT

    Hello and greetings from Canada,

Since I've been experiencing a lot of downtime during this covid-19 pandemic I decided best way to take my mind off of everything was to create my own project a concept company that does data science and analytics for small businesses that are customer facing (retail, hospitality, etc).

I'm currently in the process of creating a portfolio with some of my projects (I'm a professional data scientist) and have written a few demos I want to give away for free to gauge interest. One of my demos I'm offering to analyze Yelp review data for 1 small business (either yours or your competitions) for free.

I'm wondering what kind of small businesses would be interested in a demo like this and the best way to approach them to get the word out.

my portfolio is https://cerberusanalytics.github.io/ (work in progress)

Should I just wait till the covid-19 pandemic settles down a bit before I try and market this concept? I'm finding it hard to gauge interest because of this.

Let's say I want to build a restaurant aggregator app like Yelp that's focused on restaurant businesses and general users.

What kind of talents should I seek to develop this app?

I know that I will need a programmer/app developer and a UI designer. Anyone else?

Family First Act Payroll Relief and it's Potential Negative Impact on Small Business' Cash Flows

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 10:42 AM PDT

Congress passed the Family First Act, which has one potentially fatal flaw for small business owners who are in an industry that is most impacted by COVID-19. Simply put, if you have employees impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, you could have cash flow shortages as a result of this act in a time when small businesses need it most.

How do you help Small Businesses during these times?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 06:40 AM PDT

I'm curious how you help small businesses during these times of disruption. For many of them revenue will drop more drastically than the recurring costs. How do you help them to keep the lights on and even continue to pay their employees and give them benefits?

Here are a few things I started to do and will want to continue:

    - Get gift vouchers for their services - e.g restaurants, hair stylist, coffee shops etc.

    - Order take out / delivery food to help them keep some revenue

While I think that this will have limited impact if only few do it, I wonder how we can make more people aware of this. I would also like to prioritise businesses that use the cashflow to continue paying their employees as well as possible.

Do you think that this is helping small businesses during these times?

Suggestions for Getting on the Local News showing how our established Business Can Help

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 04:13 PM PDT

I am the founder of one of the few businesses that I expect to flourish during this time. We have opened a telemedicine clinic providing psychiatric services 1.5 years ago. We are in a metropolitan area of 2M people in a well known city. We are doing well with our two providers and were hoping to make this idea widespread from its inception.

We are the only psych office open while everyone is closed. We can see patients from their homes and have other unique services. I am flying to that city this Sunday and have five days to try to get on the local news. I want to show the community how we can help them during this time.

Suggestions to get on the news? Press release with some sort of online service? Contact reporters via email/phone? Show up in person at the news stations?

To support Canadian small businesses - free remote VPN, web-hosting, and as well as migration to cloud services

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 12:10 PM PDT

    Hi,

I operate a small business (myself and wife) and this just like any other small business has hit extremely hard. To give back to the community, we've decided to offer free services including setting up Remote Access VPN, Web Hosting + Email, and waive migration fees to cloud services providers (AWS, Azure, GCP, or our own)

It looks like this will last at least a year; so with that in mind, all of these services will remain free.

As for e-Commerce platforms (eShops, etc) then for a nominal fee we can set it up ($300 as compared to $3000) that we charge.

keep safe and call your family and friends

Washington, DC Small Business Micro Grants (Corona Virus)

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 03:18 PM PDT

Is anyone familiar with the DC mayor's new initiative?

    https://coronavirus.dc.gov/recovery-business

I have a bunch of questions regarding this small business recovery micro grants that mayor announced (totaling 25M of funding). Anyone here I can PM with questions?

I'm not sure what I need to do. My super small consulting business which solely operates in DC does not have a DC business license - i'm wondering if I should/could register now and if it's worth the hassle. When I file my taxes each year I do get a warning from my tax software saying I need that license, but i've never bothered to get it and DC has never contacted me about it.

My business is filed with the SCC of Virginia where my LLC is located (due to my attorney being in VA). All business is done and operated in DC and all taxes are paid to DC.

Are there any other similar programs?
