Finally got an accounting job almost 4 years after graduation

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 07:22 PM PST

I graduated from college back in May of 2016 with a high gpa, no internships, and no network. I struggled with anxiety and depression and had no idea what I wanted to do with my life so I ended up getting a job at a big box retailer stocking shelves. After a little over 3 years and a promotion later, I finally felt confident enough in myself to start applying to accounting related positions (I was also 100% sick of retail).

7 applications, 4 interviews, and 3 job offers later, I start my job as an accountant for the state government later this month! 55k starting salary, great benefits, no more crazy retail schedule. I'm so happy.

I've been lurking this subreddit since I was in college and never thought I'd see the day where I'd actually be working as an accountant!

Big 4 auditor wants to quit

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 02:49 PM PST

First time posting in this community but I feel like this will help. I've been working my first career job out of college for almost two years. I am doing well but I let this job run my life. I want to quit but I feel as though I will be letting my team members down. The stress I put on myself and put on me is dominating my life outside of work. I count down the minutes until I have to be back working on weeknights or during the weekend. I don't want the extra responsibility and stress that comes with this job/career. I'm looking for advice how to go about things or just help talking to people who have been in similar situations since turnover is typically high in this industry. I have just let this affect me too much and I want to get rid of the constant on edge, numb feeling I feel when I'm at work.

What are you Big 4 (Experienced Audit) Seniors leaving for these days (pay and position)?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 04:05 PM PST

For context, I work B4 in the Silicon Valley, and am currently a 4th year (will be 1 year from manager promotion come Sept). I know the big 4 has had a major push to be competitive with industry, and a lot of our current seniors have already passed 90k just with base salary, or even nearly clearing 6 figures.

So I guess my question here is two-prong: For anyone who is currently interviewing or has recently left at the senior level, what types of offers are you seeing? Used to be that you could jump ship and expect a 20%+ bump, but given the current pay levels this seems highly unlikely. Also, what types of roles are you guys looking at and what are your reasons for taking/considering those roles?

My professor gave out this review question for an upcoming test we have. We're supposed to identify the accounting issues raised in the description then write a fake letter explaining each and why they may or may not apply to the case. Can anyone please help me?

I'm starting as an AM in B4 tomorrow.. wish me luck! Any advice?

[CAN] Leaving public before 30 months?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 07:41 PM PST

Will be up for senior promotion later this year at a B4 (audit) but not really looking to do another busy season. Anyone have any advice on whether jumping before having the 30 months is a good/bad idea? seems like more and more people are starting to do this

How much weight does EY put into the virtual interviews? I did laughably bad on mine yesterday. Only way I make it to the second round is if they don’t watch at all

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 03:53 PM PST

    I've met my requirement.

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 06:32 AM PST

I worked 71 hours this week. That's not significant. That I completed my contractually required 320 hours of OT toward my minimum 2,400 hours for the fiscal year is not by itself significant. That there is 7 months left in the FY, that is what is significant.

    One internship or multiple?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 01:47 PM PST

Personally, I'm participating in my first tax internship this semester with a great firm (not B4 but the people and atmosphere are amazing), but they were on a hiring spree before my internship so I'm unsure if it will lead to a full time job or if they will be completely staffed. I'm considering taking next busy season off as well to complete another internship but I am unsure. If I do not take off next spring semester I will be graduating in May 2021.

So, my question is: is one internship the normal or do most people have several under their belt?

I would love to have a summer internship and I have applied to a few but unfortunately I'm unable to participate in the campus recruiting process this semester.

(I'm assuming grades may matter in this sense so my Accounting GPA is a 4.0 but my cumulative GPA is only a 3.3)

    Salary Negotiation?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 09:03 PM PST

I'm about to finish college, and I've been applying/networking for potential jobs. How did you guys negotiate salary? What do you say? How do you about it? Let's say this job average salary is around $50k-$55k, and when they asked, what should I say?

    How's your busy season going?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 08:59 PM PST

For me, it's my first busy season and I'm pretty sure I've:

    A) accidentally insulted at least two senior managers and;

    B) inadvertently insulted one of my female coworkers by referring to her as "dude".

But hey, at least I have decent realization, right? How's your busy season going?

[US] On a tax return, is student aid that is not used for school-related need considered unearned income or earned income?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 08:49 PM PST

Only earned income can be put into a ROTH IRA, so I was wondering if money from a FAFSA refund would be considered earned income. If you find this info somewhere can you link the website please.

    Co workers hate me

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 11:04 AM PST

So I guess I'm looking for some advice. I'm a first year LTP and my co workers have been ganging up on me. They seem to almost want me fired. Do seasoned Tax Preparers get territorial or competitive or resentful of new employees? Everyone says that the first year is tough, and I did one thing that they did not like (it was sort of a mistake of protocol but after some research I found they were wrong) and all hell broke loose and the preparer got mad at me and then the next day they started sending me emails attacking me and CC'ing the office manager, and it wasn't even that big of deal. How do you handle this? I can't quit and I won't quit but they seem to have some vendetta against me. I like the job so much I'm thinking of trying for my CPA in a few years but these women stress me out.

How to prepare for an internship interview?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 01:09 PM PST

Current college sophomore here. I have back-to-back interviews for three different firms this week. I've never really had a job interview, much less one for a B4 before, so I'd appreciate any tips. Are the B4/GT/etc internship interviews more behavioral or technical?

    2. This way my friend Wesley Virgin's autobiography launches in this SHOCKING and controversial VIDEO.

Wesley was in the military-and soon after leaving-he discovered hidden, "self mind control" tactics that the government and others used to get everything they want.

THESE are the same tactics lots of famous people (notably those who "come out of nothing") and the greatest business people used to become wealthy and successful.

You probably know how you use only 10% of your brain.

Really, that's because most of your BRAINPOWER is UNTAPPED.

Maybe this conversation has even occurred INSIDE your very own mind... as it did in my good friend Wesley Virgin's mind seven years back, while riding a non-registered, beat-up bucket of a car without a license and with $3.20 on his debit card.

"I'm very frustrated with living payroll to payroll! When will I finally succeed?"

You've been a part of those those thoughts, isn't it right?

Your success story is going to start. Go and take a leap of faith in YOURSELF.
