Coronavirus will ‘shake markets out of their buy-the-dip’ mentality, says El-Erian

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 07:31 AM PST

Mohamed El-Erian doesn't appear impressed by the bounce shaping up for U.S. stocks on Monday.

Investors 'need to decide if they want to opt for more of the same, by continuing to implement an investment playbook that has served them well, or if they want to treat the viral outbreak for what it is — a big economic shock that could derail global growth and shake markets out of their "buy-the-dip" conditioning.'Mohamed El-Erian

In a guest column in the Financial Times (paywall), the widely followed investor and chief economic adviser to Allianz, urged against buying the dip when it comes to the stock-market reaction to the spreading coronavirus, arguing that the long-running play of dismissing downbeat fundamentals on expectations central banks will ride to the rescue could prove misguided in the current environment.

So I found this video: http://y2u.be/5tr9_4XM7BE

    History repeats itself: China

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 01:55 AM PST

Recall what Chernobyl did to the USSR

Soviet bureaucracy and empty pride slowed down response and the fallout was based on lies and lack of admission to coverup the extent of the radiation until it was too late. The Soviets eventually dissolved and Gorbachev pinpointed Chernobyl as the nucleus of the decay. No pun intended.

I see a lot of parallels with this coronavirus events in China. Don't want to speculate it's a bio-weapon but people in China have been eating all kinds of weird shit since the old dynasties. They as a people are strong and genetically accustomed to weird food. If bats didn't kill you in the 15th century, it isn't magically appearing in 2019.

Nonetheless, a lot of parallels to Chernobyl. Slow response. Lax mitigation strategy. And now a suspension on futures trading. Suspending any form of market is the surest way to accelerate a selloff.

I also think the world, esp S&P500 corporate America placed all eggs in one basket with this level of dependency on China for supply line and manufacturing. Hopefully this is a wake up call to diversify and also bring some manufacturing back home.

There is no long term impact to growth if you make more things at home. Some astronomical executive salaries will have come back to the ground like they used to be in the 70s
