I just sold my first car Sales and Selling

I just sold my first car

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 10:06 AM PST

Man this shit is better than crack.

This is my first sales job, I thought the buyers were completely uninterested. I was extremely surprised when they ended up buying. Like what the fuck surprised, like holy shit you're joking right now right? You actually like this deal and like me as a salesman?

Whole process was awkward as fuck at first until I got to know them, then I kind of opened up. That's just the way I am.

Either way I'm super stoked, I'm ready and hungry to sell more. Just waiting for my next appointment or a walk in. Let's get this bread.

You feel like your experience as a sales professional has changed how you buy things?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 07:58 PM PST

So not too long ago my washing machine took a shit. I had bought it 2nd hand, it honestly lasted a lot longer then I thought. I wasn't mad, I got my value out of it. After talking to my SO over it we decided on a budget, and that we would want a new one. We also decided we didn't wanna mess or fuss about with this.

So we went to the store, where we meet a friendly sales person. We explained everything to him, and he actually landed us on a washing machine that was a bit below our budget.

I asked him about higher end ones and he explained how the higher end ones don't provide the same bang for the buck and the quality and results really aren't that much better and it'd be hard for us to tell. I said "alright" I asked him about the cheaper ones, he explained how they use cheaper parts, tend to break down more, and in general don't clean as well.

    Well ok

He landed us on a nice washing machine, and he asked us if we wanted to include the extended warranty.

    I asked him two questions

    1. Does the warranty work? Have you seen it work? If I need to use it will the warranty work and how do I use it? He explained that I could call the store, and they would handle the warranty themselves and he's seen it work countless times.

    2. Does he get a commission on the warranty?

At first he wasn't sure how to answer this question and I told him "Relax I work in sales, I just want to know if I buy this warranty do you benefit?" he said "yes I do" I said "great, lets get the warranty then" he was kinda taken back. I think he expected me to try and ask for a discount.

In the car my SO asked me "Why the warranty?" and I said "He provided us value, he benefited from it, and it gives us peace of mind" and she laughed and said "You just wanted to make him a little bit extra money didn't you?" and I said "Yes he deserved it"

I find unlike others who don't work in sales I value, value. When I'm buying something I'm not looking for the cheapest, I'm also generally not one to go top end (although sometimes I do). I also don't mind rewarding a good sales person for a job well done. I was just curious am I alone in this regard? Or do others here also think the same?

My industry is notorious for reschedules and cancelations. What techniques have you all seen to improve show up rates?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 09:34 AM PST

As mentioned in the title, my B2B team gets no shown very often. The techniques we have tried so far: schedule within 5 days/handwritten notes for anything more than 5 days out, asking them to accept the calendar invite and email and call 24 hours out (sometimes even closer to the event). What other techniques have you used to increase show up rates?

Is a prospect telling me "you're a good salesperson" a positive thing?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 07:06 AM PST

I work B2C in mattress sales. Two days ago a prospect told me "you've sold a couple mattresses in your life eh?", he ended up buying. Yesterday I had another prospect who was bouncing around from mattress to mattress, but seemed generally interested in the technology inside mattresses tell me "you're a good salesperson. I'll tell you that." Him and his girlfriend didn't buy.

I know it seems like they were giving me a compliment, but if I was actually a good salesperson shouldn't they not even notice they're being sold?

    Manager Wishlist

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 07:48 AM PST

Good morning. Come Monday morning, I start my new life as a Sales Manager. That said, I come to you to ask a simple question: what do you wish your manager had done, or done different, to help you find success when you were coming up?

Is a cover letter on a job application necessary if you're going to be reaching out directly to the Director of Sales anyways?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 10:25 AM PST

Going the route of directly reaching out to Director of Sales to try to get employed. Some of the companies I plan on reaching out to have open job listings. If they do, I feel like I have to submit an application and am wondering if I need to submit a cover letter or if directly reaching out is sufficient.

Mass Email vs. Personalized Outreach via Cold Call and Email

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 06:25 AM PST

    Hey Reddit,

What are your thoughts on the focus being more towards mass emailing potential clients vs personalized outreach via cold call, email, and LinkedIn?

Keep in mind these mass emails are relatively personalized with the prospects name etc. With this approach I can generate tons of responses and meetings everyday.

On the other hand there is the more personalized approach that I can imagine would generate less results but be more sustainable in the long run. 200 calls a week, uber personalized emails, Linkedin connections, you name it. Obviously I do this as well with the mass email approach although there is less time to focus on these other aspects.

Has anyone done an analysis or comparison of the two approaches? It'd be cool to see anyone's thoughts and experiences on this.

Where do you look for sales jobs?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 10:07 AM PST

    Hello all!

Where do you guys look for your next sales job? We have a couple of positions open for sales development reps and aren't getting great traction with Indeed. We've also tried Facebook jobs and LinkedIn, but pretty much the same result.

We are not a SaaS company and the SDR positions aren't like the typical appointment setting roles that are common. We are an eCommerce company in the building materials vertical - lighting to be specific. The role would call on past customers to try to uncover opportunities for sales. They would feed an estimator with project opportunities and, when the proposal is ready, those would go to a territory manager for follow up and close. Let me know if more details are needed.

Should we be posting on more specific sales job boards?

Edit: I should add that we're a small company. About $3M in revenue. That probably changes the whole value prop. Would still love feedback, though. Thanks for your comments.

Change in job duties with no change in goal/compensation - Should I start looking?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 03:32 PM PST

I was (somewhat) recently promoted to a closing role, less than a year ago. At my company, salespeople in my role do no prospecting, just take meetings and close deals.

The last month, due to lack of performance by BDRs and a overall mismanagement of hiring/promoting, there have not been nearly enough meetings to go around for the current closers. Because of this, they are making the newly promoted closers source their own as well as myself and the two other reps promoted beside me.

Now, instead of taking meetings/closing deals 5 days a week, I am expected to prospect my own pipe 3 days a week and close the other two days - essentially a full cycle role.

I'm not opposed to sourcing my own deals, but my issue is that my quota and minimum commission threshold are staying the same as other fully ramped closers. The ramping reps have limited quotas so they will make money on whatever they close, but myself and the other two colleagues who have been "demoted" will essentially be asked to achieve the same target as other closers with the same job description, despite the fact that we will be spending most of our week prospecting.

This is meant to be a temporary fix (however I can't get a solid answer in terms of how long this will go on), but it still seems, from my perspective, like I'm being taken advantage of. Is this a common decision of sales leadership teams in your experience?

Based on this situation, do you think I should just suck it up and prospect for a while, or start looking for other opportunities?

Looking for low-cost lead generation ideas

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 05:01 AM PST

Hello work for a very small b2b technology company, been around a long time but not well-known in the industry. The service we offer is a "nice to have" but not a "need to have". Our biggest selling points are that we can save our clients time & money, but that varies for each client and very difficult for us to quantify. We have 1 marketing person (who also wears multiple hats) and a very limited marketing budget. We work with a digital marketing agency who get a lot of people to our website but not many are converting to leads. I also do a lot of coldcalling and cold emails but response rate is also very low. I'd like to try out some print advertising in the biz section of newspaper or biz journal. Has anyone had any luck with that or other relatively low cost lead gen ideas? Thanks!

How to convince a business owner to sell their business?

    Fear mongering?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 05:47 PM PST

Is it normal for all sales jobs to have managers who use fear-mongering to hit quotas? Such as if you don't hit your rolling average or quota you're fired. I find the stress of sales only gives me anxiety and I can't sleep. I've been taking Xanax to deal with the stress and fall asleep. I now realize I'm physically dependent on it. I feel like I cant relax and separate work and maybe develop hobbies get a GF, etc. all I do is worry about being let go and not having a job.

18 years old, want to get into sales

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 09:18 PM PST

Hey all, like the title says im really interested in getting into sales this summer and wanted to ask for some advice on what you would reccommend for a first sales job.

Ive had a been working since i was 13, but the only sales experience i have is from a tree nursery, and that wasnt commission or anything, just approaching customers and helping them out.

Im very motivated, and what gets me most excited about sales is that your paycheque is reflective of the effort you put in/ how good you are.

Any advice or stories would be very welcome! Im currently living in the Vancouver area B.C.

Where to find B2B Software Companies who hire BDRs/SDRs?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 02:16 PM PST

I have no issues prospecting into a hiring manager to get a job but struggling to find the right B2B SaaS companies to reach out to.

I ran a web-scraping script on linkedin and I was shocked to see that there are only 70 companies in Silicon Valley ( traditional silicon valley, not San Francisco and whole bay area) with 5+ SDRs/BDRs on linkedin. Companies being self-listed as computer software or Internet on linkedin. I'm shocked that there was this few in such a tech hub like silicon valley. Feel like I'm missing something and need a better resource to make a list of companies.
