Life being engaged to an Accountant

Oh man, it’s about to be the greatest Monday of all time!

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 06:36 AM PST

We are on the eve of something incredible. Something invigorating. Something so fucking sexy that all of us will probably dissolve from sitting in our own accounting liquid for so long. I'm talking about something that only happens every now and again and when it does it's better than the birth of Christ. I'm talking about leap years.

When else do we get an extra day right in the middle of tax season to do more taxes? It's like a special holiday just for us. In fact, more babies are born 9 months after a leap year day just because people have their taxes done. Imagine how many more accounting's you can do because of it! And it's on a Saturday so I get to work!!!! But shit even if leap year was on a Sunday at 1 am I'd go in to celebrate with everyone. I want to take this time to talk about why leap years became a thing and why we should be grateful for the extra day of deep dicking these spreadsheets.

So back when time began, which is roughly two weeks after debits were invented, accounting Jesus said he wanted one extra day for tax season. Now at first they tried it. They tested it out with the dinosaurs and their accounting firms but we all saw what happened there. The ones who survived referred to the meteor as "The Great Reconciliation". After reviewing the balance sheet of life, the high council realized that the extra day of accounting was causing a temporal shift. So many returns were being filed on that extra day that it created a gravitational pull so strong that the meteor hit the planet. Seeing this, accounting Jesus knew that it was unsustainable. So they got rid of the extra day. Well guess what happened? Without that extra day to provide heat to the planet through accounting radiation, the world plunged into an ice age. The lands froze and made it impossible to get to the post office in time. What's the point of an extra tax season day if an entire species will be eradicated and without it things became so cold that you could hardly e file. So they came up with a compromise. Every four years there would be something called a LEAP year. This stands for "Loving Extra Accounting Paperwork". It's a time to come together and fist fuck these taxes until they come to a shattering climax. This allowed the earth to sustain a livable temperature and accountants to release their excess tax goop in a safe manner. You know they talk about climate change but if you look at the statistics it's only after extensions became a thing. Spreading the accounting throughout the year has caused some issues but I think as an industry we are dealing with it in an appropriate manner.

My favorite part of leap year is the nursery rhyme that we were all sung as a child.

"Oh leap year oh leap year again you've arrived" "More taxes to file oh what a year to be alive" "I'll fill out the forms and charge three fifty five" "Ill do these returns so our planet can thrive"

Timeless words from a timeless profession. It really shows how if we didn't work on leap year everyone on earth would die in a mass extinction brought on by a 1000 year ice age.

I hope everyone's ready for what's about to be a day better than Christmas. If you aren't working hopefully you can celebrate privately with a few spreadsheets. I know it's not Monday but leap year basically is an extra Monday. Go in that office and fuck it up. We only get this day once every four years so make it count. Alright boiz and gurls. Go get it.

    EDIT:

Originally this was a comment but then I started rambling so it will just be an edit. This was going to be a reply to u/sewidd

Alright all joking aside, is that true? Like honestly. Do these post really help you stay positive about your job? I've been going through a little rough patch in my personal life, idk if you saw the drunk post I made a while back that I took down but yeah. A lot of people on here always say these posts make a difference and I guess to me it's just some stupid shit I think of and then post and hey people like it right? But the outreach I got after I made my crazy drunk post was astounding. Like I didn't reply to a lot of people because it's hard to accept help and talk about our problems. I thought about it a lot and after seeing the response I got and that random people over the internet took the time to tell another random person some kind words it made me kind of rethink it a little bit. If they do legitimately make a positive difference in your life then I am glad that I started making these posts. I'll try to continue it's just hard to keep coming up with stuff each week. Even though it really is just a bunch of random nonsense, I do put a little thought into some of it haha. If they don't make a difference, to those of you reading this comment, then I'm glad you took the time to read my post and I'm sorry that it might of wasted your time. I really love this community and I can't express my gratitude for the support. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

    Burn out in busy season

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 05:19 PM PST

I left public accounting for three years and now I'm back. I'm completely burned out and it's only February busy season ends April 30. I work at a midsize firm and I'm only working 55-60 hours a week. Becoming unbearably depressed. How do people who came back to public accounting handle it?

In short, since my freshman year of high school until 2 months ago, before busy season started, I gained 10lbs. Basically it's really hard for me to gain weight. In the last two months I gained 10lbs from busy season

    Should I Worry?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 02:25 PM PST

Today was my last day at a B4 firm. I left after two and a half years. I just feel really nervous because I was still working on a fiscal year corporate return and they file in almost every state. It's due in a couple of weeks and really hope they don't have any fire drills. All the returns have been prepped but little has been manager-reviewed. I was the acting senior and didn't get to review or finish everything. I just sucked at delegating work and that's partly why I left. I really hope my name doesn't get dragged through the mud.

SEC Reporting role at newly IPO'd company

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 06:14 PM PST

Does anyone here have experience taking an SEC reporting role at a company that just went public? Any regrets or things I should be thinking about? I am in the Bay Area for reference.

For those of you that passed Core 2: what should I study for Finance? There are too many details, long e-book chapters, formulas... takes too much time to read each chapter. What should I expect in case and in MCQs in Finance? Any comment helps..Thanks.

New York City S-Corp vs LLC -- s-corps aren't recognized in NYC?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 05:22 PM PST

So I did a bad thing: I registered an S-corp in New York City before realizing that S-corps are not recognized in the city and subjected to a corporate tax of 8.85%. I'm a freelance designer/engineer.

I'm trying to concretely understand what that means in concrete terms. Can someone correct my following scenario:

Scenario: if I have an NYC s-corp and it makes $100k in revenue, and 50k were allocated as salary and 50k as a distribution, I would pay:

    • My overall income of $100k would be taxed state, federal, city income taxes
    • the salaried portion of $50k would additionally have a self employment tax of 15.3%
    • the dividend distribution portion of $50k would be charged 8.85% business tax

    Is that calculation right?

Does it make sense to dissolve the S-Corp and form an LLC instead? Also, does anyone know of anyone/tax professional who really really understands this NYC-specific situation?

Ready to give up on looking for a job

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 03:13 PM PST

I left my last position as a property accountant to move back home across the country, and the job search has been abysmal. I get contacted multiple times a day by these recruiting firms because I put my resume on job hunting sites, but all of the positions they want to talk to me about seem super shady. It's all these low-paying, temp-to-hire contract type jobs that are really just billing positions and don't even have anything to do with accounting. Occasionally I'll hear something about an A/R or A/P clerk role, but even those are all contract-based. And they always give me the same story about how it's "a good way to get my foot in the door with a great company, it's good experience, etc.," but I know that's probably bullshit, considering these aren't even real accounting roles.

I'm starting to wonder why I even went to school at this point. I thought having an accounting degree could at least guarantee me a 45k a year staff accounting position. I graduated with a 3.70 GPA and I worked hard for it, but it doesn't seem to have made any difference. I think I really lucked into my first job out of school, considering I was making $60k base. Now I can't even find a similar position making 75% of that.

Also, it seems like every job I apply for leads to another one of these recruiters contacting me. I'll apply for a staff role, and then yet another recruiter will get in touch with me and tell me about all these other positions they have. I'm wondering if some of these job postings are even real, or if it's just a way to fish for clients. I'm really starting to realize I should've just bitten the bullet and gone into public when they were recruiting at my school. I knew industry might have slower career growth, but I thought I could at least *have* a career.

    Big 4 Requirements - Tax

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 06:46 PM PST

Currently an audit intern at a midsized firm but wanting to switch to tax. Graduating with BA in accounting and 150 hours. Do I have to have a masters or be a licensed CPA for a full time position at a big 4?

What is it like to have social skills?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 10:24 PM PST

First year tax senior reporting in from a top 10 firm. What is it like to have real social skills in this game? I noticed from a very early age (middle school onward) that I didnt have the greatest communication skills. I'm very self aware without drawing the same attention that I've seen others draw to themselves. I still have a crew of dudes at my firm that are asking me to lunches 4+ years after our internship period, but man it hurts even in those settings.

I have a decent technical knowledge of my LOB, but it's becoming very obvious that I'm limited regardless of my chosen field. I thought accounting would be a good place for me, but I'm also very driven and my 8 months in industry felt like a death sentence for someone like me. I'm probably on the spectrum to a certain extent, but I'll never get that confirmed.

Back in public it feels like I will fall a bit behind my peers, which is obvious given that due to my unplanned return some of them are reviewing my work. I'm also reviewing and preparing some pretty complex stuff that my partner felt was not appropriate for others at my same level to work on.

Idk man. It feels like the game is rigged. I honestly doubt I would do well outside of a public environment at this point.
