Is Public Accounting right for you?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 05:51 AM PST

    • Does the mere thought of working a casual 9-5 make you sick with disgust?
    • Do you think your significant other would be better off as your assistant rather than your partner?
    • Do you think that excel documents are the pinnacle of human existence?
    • Do you enjoy eating take out for dinner every single night?
    • Do you think that 8 hours of sleep at night is a waste of your life?
    • Do you enjoy spending 15 hours a day locked in a room with depressed masochists?

If you answered yes to some of the following, you might be perfect for public accounting! So come on in. Have fun at training, enjoy the kool aid, and I'll need the review notes cleared by EOD

So I just got fired a week into my job

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 06:15 PM PST

Tax season and I accidentally gave a client bad advice. They didn't like my work either.

This is my fourth tax season. Is this basically a death sentence to be fired during busy season?

One month into public internship: Update

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 04:19 PM PST

Yoyo kool aid drinkers! Hard to believe a month has already passed since I was shouting out all of us new interns. Hows your bank accounts looking? Yeah hourly pay is awesome...

    So what have we learned?

Well. I work for a top 8 firm, not big 4. (I'm located in the lower plains). Staffing issues are fucking real. Tax people doing audit work on top of their tax work. Interns being thrown everywhere and anywhere.

I've done everything from 1099's to 1040s, personal property, 1065, 1120s, assurance work, inventory observations, government audits, insurance company audits, farm audits. Did I mention its only been a month?

Anyways, I finally understand the memes on this sub better. SALY, Look at PY, trust but verify, don't worry, we don't know what we're doing either, are you eating hours? Why is your charge time so low? Why is your office admin time so high? Pass on further review. The amount is clearly trivial. The amount is immaterial. PDW Larry, Reddit Shitposter, they also have no idea why the fuck these numbers are so weird. Isn't that your job? He says. See WP ____.

As we get to the real start of busy season, February and March I hope I can remind all of us that things will only get worse. But don't worry, hopefully they don't hire us and we can leave on April 15. Wait, no, ah fuck it. I don't give a shit anymore honestly. Did I mention its only been a month? Happy interning!

    Can accounting be a low-stress/easy job/career?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 04:36 PM PST

Hi there, I'm considering accounting as a second career (I'm 41 if it matters), and I'm looking for some advice. I have a disability that causes fatigue (doesn't affect brain function), and I'm hoping to take an associates in accounting and find a part-time job in industry. I know that there are busy times and not so busy times. Will I be able to find a part-time, (usually) low-stress job in accounting? I don't want to climb the corporate ladder, do public accounting or do anything extraordinary. My hope is finding a non-profit where I can work 20-25 hours a week. Is this even possible?

    CPA’s who became entrepreneurs?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 06:06 PM PST

Hey I wanted to know if there were any CPA's here who started their own startup/business. Whether it was your plan from the beginning or something that came about, if there's any of you, I have a couple questions to ask. Primarily looking for people who didn't start anything related accounting/financial services. Any help would be helpful.
