UPDATE: Am I commuting insurance fraud

    Original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Insurance/comments/esf0z1/am_i_committing_insurance_fraud/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

So I bit the bullet and called in after people suggested I wasn't committing fraud because it was unknowingly. But most likely would going forward since I knew something was up now.

I laid all the cards on the table with the representative and she informed me o am quite literally grandfathered into the plan. I am listed as a "Survivor". So because he passed away and I was a dependent I am covered for life!

And to those wondering the employer was Disney.

Unsure about procedure with requoting and agent

    Posted: 24 Jan 2020 03:24 AM PST

    Hi all,

My policy for auto has a renewal for 1/28/20, and I contacted my Agent 2.5 weeks ago when I received my bill. There was a $60 increase, which I found to be quite odd..sure I've had my policy go up a few bucks, maybe even as high as $15/month. We're two drivers in our mid 30's with no points, no claims, a 2017 vehicle, and a 2015 vehicle.

I asked her about checking out some different companies to see if they were cheaper because I would have a hard time paying an additional $60/mo when nothing has changed. She said sure, she would have the quotes for the other companies that afternoon.

During the initial exchange, I also mentioned to her that I had two drain pipes break over the past couple of months (Around $6k expense), read my homeowners policy (Same company, doesn't renew until May 2020), and wasn't sure if drain pipes were considered service pipes to be able to file a homeowners claim. In addition to saying she'd get me the quotes that afternoon she gave me the phone number to claims. No problem there I can take care of it.

A week goes by, I email her and ask politely about the requotes. She says "I was waiting to see if a claim came across for homeowners before I did anything." Ok, I'll take the blame for that as I didn't see an urgency in calling. So I call immediately, get my claim started. The next day, she tells me that there's an in house person that will handle my claim if I decide to stay with my current company. I respond and say that I don't know if I'm staying with them because I don't have any quotes yet from the other companies. I then ask if she can take care of the other companies while my homeowners claim is open. She said yes, absolutely. Well, 3 days later, still nothing.

    My main questions are this:

    1. Can she requote with other companies while I have an open claim or is she just putting me off?

    2. How long does a claim usually take to be "approved" so I am not stuck paying this ridiculous increase?

TLDR: Agent of almost 20 years seems to be dragging her feet to requote my auto policy with other companies..want to understand if it's because of my open homeowners claim or because she's putting it off.

    Thanks!

Deductible is $1000 for auto insurance, and scratched someones car backing up. Should I pay out of pocket?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 09:44 PM PST

Will my landlord cover the deductible?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 03:44 PM PST

So to start off we rent the place from a landlord. We run a small family owned pizza restaurant.

The ceiling in the dining area started leaking and we called insurance right away. They sent over an emergency restoration service and they estimated costs of 10k+ and went ahead with removing flooring and ceiling. Today I found out that we had to pay a $5000 deductible, which I wasn't aware of. I asked several times if we are fully covered and they said yes. I have never filed a claim so I never knew. I wish I did so we could have done it ourselves but I also think having professionals do it is much better since it was a sewage pipe and such.

Will this claim from our insurance be covered by my landlords insurance since we don't own the property? I have tried speaking to him several times but he is on vacation.

Out of State ticket is biting my butt.

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 05:19 PM PST

I am a Californian driver who got a ticket in New York back in July of 2019. I recently tried to renew my insurance and saw a big increase in the premium. I want to know if Traffic school will remove my ticket record to reduce my premium back down.

I was misinformed that I shouldn't worry about the ticket since it was an out of state ticket.....

Please give me advice on this case.

    Lapse in coverage

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 05:16 PM PST

This fall, I had to cancel my credit card because of fraudulent activity. It was the card I had on file for auto-pay, though my insurance company also had my bank account on file as well. After I canceled my card, I used my bank account to manually pay for insurance. This December, they charged my old credit card (I had forgotten to preemptively pay for it with my registered bank account). Of course, it did not process and they sent me a notice of non-payment and cancellation. It was the holidays, I was traveling, and I did not notice.

My insurance canceled in mid-January and on the same day, about 15 hours after my insurance had officially lapsed, I got in a minor car accident. Fml.

I got a call today from the adjuster from my insurance company. They explained that I'm not covered for this accident. From here, I talked to the other person's lawyer, where I learned they won't be pursuing me in court and that their client will be going through their insurance. (Thank God.) I've contacted the other person's insurance company, who said they'll be paying for the repairs and (if any) injuries. Their adjuster will call me to talk about a potential payment plan, if I'm found to be at fault.

I processed this with a few friends who, to my confusion, expressed outrage that my company won't be covering the accident.

Now, on one hand: I fucked up by not being as diligent as I needed to be with my insurance payment.

On the other: I had been with this insurance company for over 5 years. I had made every payment on time and had only one (very minor) accident. I drive a Jeep that's older but in very good shape. I literally drive maybe 2-5 miles a week. I'm a very low-risk and loyal customer.

I'm terrified because I am low income (graduate student in an expensive city in California), so not being covered would mean I'll have to fork over a lot of money potentially. I called my agent and (calmly) expressed my frustration that they won't be covering me here. I walked him through my logic: I had multiple forms of payment available on file so they should have tried those. They have my phone number, so they could have at least tried calling me? AND, while I should be very diligent about my payments, as my agent (that I am hiring) this was a time for them to step in and assist me to make sure I was covered. After all, it's not like I was lapsing left and right. He said he's going to talk to the head agent and get back to me when he can. He seemed like he earnestly wanted to help me, so I feel optimistic. (Also, I'm reenrolled and up-to-date on my payments.)

Any way. I'm very confused about the situation, both logistically and emotionally. If anybody could clarify how I can proceed from here, please weigh in. Do companies ever cover things during lapses?

    Insurance company is playing games

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 07:56 PM PST

I am really annoyed with CareFirst right now.

I got authorization for my son's occupational therapy this past Fall. They have since denied a couple claims while paying others. This is typical.

First they claimed the services I was filing claims for were not OT. Then I called for clarification and was told we were authorized for CPT 95350 but we are submitting claims for 97110. They never told us what specific CPT code they had authorized and this was never a problem before, including all of last year. They claimed we should have included the CPT code(s) we wanted to use on the authorization request. The form does not even ask for that information.

I googled CPT 95350 and it doesn't even exist. My provider questioned it as well. There is a code they can use that is 97530. Either the rep on the phone gave me the wrong number or they screwed up and authorized a code that doesn't exist.

Customer service told me to call the Utilization Management Department. Except they won't talk to me, only the provider. So I get the provider to call in and they falsely tell them that we applied for authorization under an expired member ID. I sent them a copy of the insurance card and she said it matches what insurance told them and what was on the form. I should know, I filled out the form before sending it to them to finish.

I don't know why they do this. It is so frustrating. They keep coming up with new excuses not to pay the claims.

The provider is going to follow up but I am so close to contacting the Maryland Insurance Commission.

My parked car was hit. They want to pay out of pocket - what should I do?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 03:57 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

My car was parked in a parking lot and an elderly man back into it. It pushed the bumper in on the passenger side and the clips holding the bumper in are broken on that side.

I wasn't at my car when it happened, but I saw it through the window. I went out and the man apologized said he wants to pay out of pocket. I got all of his information including his auto insurance policy.

It was an elderly man, and I sympathize. I really do. He seems genuine but I am not a trusting person and I don't at all feel comfortable with him paying out of pocket. I feel there are so many scenarios that could happen that would screw me over - what if he writes a check and it bounces? What if more damage is found on my car? My insurance said if I went that route, it would negate their coverage so any additional damage found wouldn't be covered.

Am I jerk if I just call and file a claim with his insurance? I have never had damage to my car, and I don't know if it is normal for people to pay out of pocket.

I have full coverage on my car with my insurance but they said to file through his because they can't assure me that my premiums wouldn't go up if I file through them.

Please let me know your thoughts. I haven't dealt with this before.

Looking for advice on my career.

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 07:24 PM PST

So this is mainly a request for career advise while working as an Auto claims rep. I am fairly new to the industry after surviving my first year and as crazy as it sounds I enjoy what I do. With that being said my goals for the second year with my company need to be more than simply learning to handle claims, proper notes, policy language and all that comes with it. I was looking at my coworkers cubicles and more than a few have a framed certificate from something called The Institute. Is this a training program that is recognized a lot or might it only be specific to my company as acceptable? Is there other training I can take that would make me more retainable or marketable?

    Thank your for your help.

PS: Can we have a career advice flair?

Insurance reco Repair shop did a terrible job. Adjusters knew and didn't say anything.

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 03:22 PM PST

Seattle, WA - Progressive Insurance - Owned 2015 Honda CR-V Touring with 22k miles on it. My Fathet IL offered to drive the two grandkids to school one morning and got in an accident. His fault, no injuries, side airbags deployed and decent damage to rear passenger side panel. We had Comp/collision at 2500 deductibles. Sent it to Progressive's recommended shop and they performed almost 20k in repairs. Prog opted not to total the vehicle.

Two weeks later the car started smoking so badly I thought it had caught fire. I even stuck a fire extinguisher under the hood and sprayed it before opening it. Turns out no fire but the water pump had locked up. The bearings were shot. Remember it had almost 23k miles. We don't drive much or far. School is 2 miles away. I'm suspicious that this failure is related to the original accident. Water pumps don't typically seize up due to bearing failure after 20k miles.

I informed Progressive and they had it towed to a shop I know and trust and i can walk there. They sent their adjuster/investigator out there and determined it hadn't caught fire and that it was unlikely to have been caused by the previous accident. Fine. $600 repair.

I go to pick it up today and the mechanic pulls me aside and says he doesn't think the original shop did a very good job. I believe his professional assessment was, "a real $h!t job.". He showed me how rather than cuttingmout and replacing the panels, they pulled them out but that the panels didn't align any more. The weatherstripping wasn't tight and the panel clips weren't able to lock on completely. The break light covers are wobbly. Can't imagine anyone buying it in that condition My wife doesn't feel safe it it and I'm inclined to agree.

The mechanic showed all this to the adjuster who apparently agreed. The thing is, I spoke to the adjuster afterwards and he never mentioned anything. Just said it wasn't covered.as it was mechanical and unrelated to the collision.

So my question is what should my next step be? I have legal insurance and could go that route. I could contact the claims rep. I don't even want the damn thing anymore especially given that pulling a bent piece of metal introduce micro-fracturing ( I'm guessing). A dealer won't give me jack for it and I can't sell it in good conscience without scaring people off. In my opinion it should've been totaled from the get go. Getting it totalled would be the best outcome for us but given Prog. has already paid for the repairs they will want to send it back to the original shop to get re-repaired.

    Any help is much appreciated.

Edit: removed a half sentence that lost its way.

Geico auto insurance coverage applicable to a Uhaul Moving Truck Rental .. Yes and No

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 03:22 PM PST

I read conflicting info about this. So I called Geico TODAY. I asked the agent if my auto policy covers a Uhaul Moving Truck. THE GEICO AGENT SAID MY AUTO POLICY COVERS MOVING TRUCK RENTALS UP TO A 15000GVW. So I had to search further... A 20' UHAUL Truck has a 14500GVW. So any truck 20' and under you should be good.

UHAUL's widely available and popular '26 Large Moving truck is listed at a 25999GVW and IS NOT covered at all. So if you get it you better also get the $28 per day SafeMove plus insurance if you want to have Collision and Liability Insurance.

    Medical debt insurance question

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 07:00 PM PST

    Hi all,

About two years ago my wife was employed with a company that provided medical insurance in Arizona. She had an appointment which was scheduled while she had insurance and was let go before the appointment actually happened. She was saddled with 3k in medical expenses. Is there anything we can do about that? Or just pay up.

Any advice is nice, even if it is just to confirm that we have to pay. Thanks!

    Move back

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 06:02 PM PST

Adjusters...when I had to "pack out" my kitchen prior to it being gutted I was reimbursed for all the supplies I bought, which my adjuster was fine with given that she didn't have to hire movers for the pack out and I opted to store it all on my own property (have a permanent barn) vs them renting a space. They're obviously not paying to store it, but they paid for all the boxes and I'm pretty sure I was compensated somehow for the time spent packing. It was cheaper than hiring a crew.

Will I get reimbursed for the time spent for the "move in"? Is that a usual expense that's covered? I'm thinking if I'm not, I'll just opt to have them hire the crew and they can haul everything back in. It's an entire kitchen in storage.

    Car vandalism insurance claim confusion

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 05:48 PM PST

So my car got vandalized, and insurance basically made us change policy in order to get it covered, then the insurance company (ICBC) told us to go to the body shop, which is where the car now is. The body shop called and said they are waiting for insurance to approve it, which they should have done before I gave them my car. I am confused that if it is the body shop's mistake on taking my car so early, and if there is a chance insurance won't approve my car.

Boyfriend and I just bought a house together, insured through GEICO. We both have separate GEICO car insurance policies. Can we combine and save money?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 05:16 PM PST

Title mostly says it all. We each have our own separate insurance policies right now. We both have great credit scores, we both have great driving records (no recent accidents), we both own our cars, neither is high-end (Subaru, Hyundai). We got a small discount each for using them for home insurance, but would we save even more money by combining into one car insurance policy? Can we even do that?

    Thanks!

    Progressive direct or insurance agent?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 04:43 PM PST

Long story short. Have been getting quotes from broker. Rates seemed high so went to Progressive and got quotes that were the exact same for auto and 200 cheaper per year for homeowners. Broker is vaguely saying there are "probably lots of holes" in the policy I got quoted from Progressive (actually homeowners will be through NatGen Premier sold through Progressive). I sent him their detailed quote. He isn't pointing out the holes but saying that he will handle everything for me and they will jack my rates in 6 months so I might as well go with him right now. Is he right or am I being sold?

Parked car was hit by recycling company. Is 1st offer two low?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 04:40 PM PST

My parked '94 Accord (we still use it every day though) was hit by our recycling truck during the morning pickup. They said it's a total loss and gave a quote for that loss by the Recycling company's insurer ia ~$1300.

I was told don't accept the first offer since it's low. Does anyone have any thoughts or experience with this?

What does CWD cover for Commercial vehicles damages?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 04:09 PM PST

Rented a cargo van and my friend (the primary driver) accidentally damaged the top, back exterior when the van didn't clear the parking ramp.

I bought collision waiver damage (CWD) but the rental company said this type of exterior damage is not covered. They made me pay $1200 for the scratches on the vehicle. No deductible.

I filed a collision report with the city and called the rental company's insurance to file a report.

This all seems kind of sketchy to me. I think they're double dipping.

Does anyone know if this is right?

    Domestic partnership insurance in jeopardy

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 02:03 PM PST

Me and my fiance are registered as domestic partners, so that I can qualify for his employer sponsored insurance. We are a straight couple getting married in April. The domestic partnership eligibility as stated on the company's 2020 Dependent Eligibility Requirements documents says: "Have registered as domestic partners pursuant to a domestic partnership ordinance or law of a state or local government, or under the laws of a foreign jurisdiction." We registered in our county, which would seem to fall under local government. Now they are asking for documents from the State, in our state Florida, a domestic partnership registry does not exist, and is only provided by certain counties. Any advice?

My car jumped a curve, slipped, hit a tree and kept slipping till it came to a full stop. My insurance hasn't gave me an offer on my vehicle yet but I wanted to see if the first accident would affect the acv of what they are going to offer? Would I be able to dispute the acv if lowballed? Need *private* health and maternity insurance, cannot for the life of me find good insurance to just *buy*. [TIME-SENSITIVE]

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 01:36 PM PST

Recently got married back in October, and my wife and I have just found out we'll be having a baby in nine short months! For the past two years, I've started/opened up individual health insurance policies through GoldenRule (United Health Care) for each of us, every six months.

Neither of us work, we're both in Master's programs in college, so we aren't insured in any way through employment. I have a very sizable trust fund as well as a few annuities that keep us more than comfortable, so for simplicity's sake let's just say we won't be working, period.

The GoldenRule insurance policy (that we both currently have) is, in short, terrible. It doesn't even cover physicals. Had I known how bad it was, I wouldn't have chosen it, but I'm unfortunately a little uninformed here.

So what I need is basically a very good private insurance policy (we would never qualify for Medicaid with the amount of money we get each year [>$120k]) that I can simply pay for out of pocket, as well as a maternity insurance policy. From what I understand the maternity insurance will probably come in tandem with our health insurance, right?

Can anyone point me toward such a product?
