On behalf of extended car warranties... Posted: 24 Jan 2020 03:38 PM PST So, we had a check engine light come on our 2014 Lincoln MKT on Dec 16th. Took to the dealership, the code read "camshaft sensor" and they checked it in to work on the next day. They call me Tuesday: the check engine light is now off, but they did some poking around and see metal flakes in the oil. (Car has 70100 miles, last oil change was at 69,500, the 5 yr power train warranty expired in August). Shop recommends replacing the engine- $14,000. Yup. That is the estimate Enter GEICO extended warranty. They check my oil service records, send out an inspector to set a value for the vehicle. They need to decide between repair or totaling the car. The value is in our favor and the proceed with authorization of repairs with a used engine for $11,000. (Note that many parts in the install will be new). Engine arrives Dec 31st. Inspected and prepared. A short delay for a manifold gasket that needs ordering(arrives Jan 15th). Then curveball number one. Jan 20th: They need a new hose for the turbo housing for $188. They claim Geico won't cover. Geico says they will. That got resolved Jan 22nd. Curveball number 2. Jan 23rd car is fixed and running great, but there is an exhaust leak and they need to rethread- $225. Geico steps in, calls the shop, Geico authorities the new repair. Great customer service and advocacy. We paid our deductible of $250. "Over 75 Years of Savings and Service". Yes indeed. [link] [comments] |
Long term disability insurance question Posted: 24 Jan 2020 09:04 PM PST My employer offers both STD and LTD insurance. The long term offers 70% of your income. My father worked for the same employer and ended up on LTD only to find that the 70% is up to a cap amount and that the percentage falls as time goes on ( 70 - 50 - 30 etc). The carrier pushed to get him on social security and once they succeeded in this they contacted him to inform him he owed all the money back that they had paid him over the term of his disability. They tried to get the check for back pay that social security sent him. This is a short version of the events but the overview. Is this how disability insurance usually works out is this a sketchy policy. I've been debating on dropping mine since it essentially seems like a loan moreso than insurance. Thanks! My husband totaled his truck. They are offering him much less than fair market value. Posted: 24 Jan 2020 04:54 PM PST Full Coverage through American Family. Fair market value for his truck, at the low end, is $5,200 The adjuster offered him $1,900. My husband did say, over the phone when they told him the value, "can't you give me more than that?" And the guy just said "no." How do they come up with that number, and what can we do if we don't think it's a fair offer? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jan 2020 07:09 AM PST I was in a car collision a Wednesday (I wasn't at fault) and was wondering If I could go get my battery and radio out of my car, would that effect the settlement from the other driver's insurance. I have a replacement battery and radio to take their place. Edit: Spelling [link] [comments] |
Car Insurance Drivers Question? Posted: 24 Jan 2020 09:34 PM PST Let's say my household consists of my mom, dad, myself, and my brother. We are all on the same car insurance policy with one provider, and we all have our own vehicles. Does this automatically make us "drivers" on each other's cars, or is being named as a driver an extra step we have to request? [link] [comments] |
Insurance estimate to repair much lower than estimates from body shops Posted: 24 Jan 2020 09:22 PM PST Vehicle is a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado Z71 4WD After a wreck, my insurance company (CSAA) sent an appraiser out to look over the vehicle. She wrote up an estimate and and cut me a check on the spot for that amount less my collision deductible. I have been to three different repair shops, all of which gave me written estimates of repair, all of which were far over (one was $1800 higher) than the estimate from CSAA. The company estimator is saying I have to have it looked at before she will raise the amounts. I'm feeling a screwing coming on, in the form of CSAA determining how my vehicle is going to be repaired, instead of the repair pros. The last time that I had a claimable wreck I got the estimate from the shop, took it to my agent, they sent a check to the shop, I paid my deductible, that was that. None of this "well we gotta look at it before we can change the numbers we wrote down" business. Is it now standard practice for the companies to determine what they will and will not pay for? Recycled parts instead of OEM, they only pay a set labor rate, not what the shop charges, etc. ETA I'm fine with recycled parts, provided they are inspected and are in acceptable condition. What my concern is more that the company is going to micromanage the shop into only doing what they want, not what is right for the vehicle repairs. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jan 2020 08:09 AM PST I'm an auto damage appraiser for a big, animal-themed insurance company. Our policy is one of the less expensive options on the market, and we clearly tell customers that we will use aftermarket and used parts as a way to keep premiums low. But then, when customers get into an accident, the first thing they scream at me is, "WhY aRe YoU uSiNg NoN-oEm PaRtS?!?!" What can I tell them, other than to say, "This is what your policy says we'll do?" That usually tanks my customer survey! [link] [comments] |
Victim of hit and run, insurance rates increased Posted: 24 Jan 2020 02:16 PM PST My boyfriend and I live in Texas, he was driving his car in September when we were hit by a truck and the car ended up being totaled. His car, and three other people and their vehicles were affected. The fourth car, the one that hit us, drove off, and as far as we are aware hasn't been located. He has his car insurance with progressive with 3 other family members, and their bill just went up $70. Progressive is saying it's because of my boyfriends accident, that since they paid they're treating him as at fault since there isn't another insurance. Is this the typical insurance response? Is there anything we can do? [link] [comments] |
What do I now? How do I survive?? Posted: 24 Jan 2020 12:08 PM PST I'm 19 and live in Alabama. I was on Medicaid but taken off when I turned 19 and now I'd have to apparently wait until October when my stepdad can put me on his insurance but there's a problem.. I suffer from depression and anxiety and require meds and therapy. I have no insurance so I can't go to therapy nor receive meds, this is terrifying. I tried calling Blue cross to see what plans they off but i was too late, the 60 day period hit today which I didn't know about.. [link] [comments] |
High Risk Car Insurance options LA, CA. Posted: 24 Jan 2020 07:13 PM PST Hello guys, It's been a rough two years. I been at fault for three accidents now and will probably be cut from my insurance company (Alliance United). The third and latest one happened in the highway this year. Vehicle ahead of me made sudden stop in response to other cars ahead of her. I rear ended her but no cars where totaled, air bags deployed, or crash sensors went off. This has been the case for the other two accident I been involved in. Everyone drove off that day after insurance information was exchanged. This latest incident will most likely cost me a job I been in the process for since 2019. Since I been found at fault. I don't want to drive anymore but am looking to keep a car and insurance payment going for reasons. I might be eligible to apply for this job next year but it requires a history of constant financial responsibility and valid insurance. What are some of my options for insurance companies the following three years? I don't have any other moving violations or tickets. I am aware It was my poor driving that had caused the accidents and am going to take steps to improve. The other two accident where fender bender in the streets. The last one was in the highway and could have ended much worse with me potentially killing someone or self, being sandwich by two cars, or causing long term physical damage to myself or the other parties. Thanks, [link] [comments] |
Do I have a chance at Diminished Value Claim or am I SOL? Posted: 24 Jan 2020 01:08 PM PST Still not completely out of grief, but my 2019 Highlander with less than 1000 miles was involved in wreck. The other party accepted fault right at the scene and to Police. The repairs are done and bill is 5K. I tried to get an appraisal online but could not due to I guess too low mileage. I get a message about getting it physically apprised. So I just want to know if there is any hope in starting a diminished value claim or am I SOL and just accept it? [link] [comments] |

Explosion causes major damage to business and forgot to pay insurance this year what to do now? Posted: 24 Jan 2020 06:00 PM PST Update*** situation sorted out, got a lawyer This morning a giant explosion completely leveled a warehouse 1-2 buildings away from my dad's business. When my dad checked up on his business today there it was a mess. All his inventory stocked outside is covered in debris and basically unusable, store houses have missing walls. We did a little calculations and it totals up to over a million in damage. If we have to rebuild one of the warehouse it will be a lot more. What is the best course of action right now. Worst of all he might have forgotten to pay for insurance this year what do we do?!! https://wqad.com/2020/01/24/2-people-killed-in-an-explosion-at-a-houston-manufacturer-that-shook-the-city-and-damaged-homes/amp/ [link] [comments] |
How to find free/cheap study materials for insurance license(s)? Posted: 24 Jan 2020 05:50 PM PST I'm trying to make a career change and want to get my insurance license. I'm good at self teaching and I already know the basics, so I'm hoping to find a book or online course to prepare for the test on my own. I'm in the process of interviewing for a life and health insurance sales position, so this is the license I'm interested in. My library doesn't seem to have anything in the stacks and everything online requires a real financial investment (approximately $150 USD seems average). Is there a way to learn that I'm overlooking? I'm in KS if it matters. [link] [comments] |
Do I need medical coverage for Auto if I already have health insurance Posted: 24 Jan 2020 11:01 AM PST If I get into an accident and incur medical expenses, won't those be covered under my health insurance? What does Medical coverage under an auto policy cover that my health insurance does not? [link] [comments] |
Confusion about State Farm discount on EyeSight safety features Posted: 24 Jan 2020 04:36 PM PST I'm in the market for a 2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited. They have an optional safety package called EyeSight that has driver assistance/safety features like AEB etc. I asked my State Farm agent for quotes for different years/trims and I asked if EyeSight mattered, and he said no. On the Outback subreddit, a couple people said they got discounts for EyeSight from State Farm. So I got two VINs of two cars currently for sale, same model/year/trim/color, one with EyeSight and one without. I asked my agent for quotes, and they came back identical. They did both have the following discounts:
Are the random posters just mistaken? Or does it depend on location/state or something? Any other reason why my State Farm agent would tell me there's no difference, but another person's State Farm agent might give them a discount? (Edit: I'm in California if it matters) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jan 2020 12:48 PM PST I was 100% at fault in a near collision. I wasn't looking at the road, drifted into the other lane and caused someone to swerve off the road. When I saw this happen, I pulled over and made sure everyone was okay. Thankfully everyone was alright and his car did not appear damaged after a quick inspection. I gave him my number and told him to call me if he finds damage. Did I play this out right? Also, how much money am I looking at having to pay if he finds damages on his car? All I pay for is liability insurance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jan 2020 05:17 AM PST This is purely a on my own decision. I paid for examFX study materials. I opted for the self study course. In addition to that - what other avenues can I use to study? YouTube people to follow? Other websites that have useful materials to study with? Any additional information and study guides would be great! Thanks a head of time! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 24 Jan 2020 10:36 AM PST I have a personal articles policy through State Farm - if I lost my custom made rings that my husband had designed, with diamonds he sourced himself ---- will state farm pay us the money to begin the process again? Or we have to use their jeweler to create them? Anyone familiar with State Farm and the process?? This is literally my worst nightmare. [link] [comments] |
Should I pay home warranty company that sent scammer HVAC contractor? Posted: 24 Jan 2020 09:29 AM PST This isn't exactly insurance-related, but I felt this would be a good place to post. TL;DR: Home warranty company sends scammy HVAC contractor to assess heating issue. We called another HVAC technician for second opinion, who immediately figured out they were scamming us and fixed the actual problem for 1/5 the cost we were being quoted by the warranty company's contractor. We took cash payout from warranty company instead of having them fix the problem. Warranty company now wants $75 for the scammy service call. Should we pay? My wife and I bought a house last May. The seller agreed to pay for one year of home warranty coverage. The warranty requires a $75 fee for each service call, and then if additional repairs/service is needed, that is subject to the coverage provisions of the warranty. We live in a warmer part of the US, and did not need to use the heat until this past November. Up until this time, the air conditioning/cooling had been working fine. When we began using the heat, it immediately started acting up. Long story short, the heat was not turning off when it reached the set temperature on the thermostat. I requested a "seasonal heating tune-up" service call with the warranty company and paid the $75 online. They sent a contractor, they did the tune-up (whatever that consists of), and looked into the issues with the heat not switching off. They told us there was probably a leak somewhere, and some other things, but they didn't have the right equipment with them to test that. We scheduled another date for them to come by and check it out. They came, and when they finished, they told us there were all sorts of issues -- the entire air handling unit needed to be replaced, the evap coil was damaged, there was almost no refrigerant in the tank, and the zone control board/dampers was damaged. The quote, without warranty coverage, was somewhere in the $2,000+ range. They submitted the service claim to the warranty company, and they would only cover slightly less than half that. Something didn't sit right with me with the HVAC contractors. All that damage just didn't make sense, especially with a home less than 5 years old. I got a referral for a different HVAC guy through a family friend. That guy came and, within about 30 minutes, told us that very likely the only problem was a wiring issue with the zone control board that was making it "trick itself" into running auxiliary/emergency heat. He ran a pressure test and said there was definitely not a leak in the lines, the air handling unit was fine, and the evap coil was fine. He also said that it was true the refrigerant was empty, but that there was pretty much no way that could have happened on its own with nothing else being damaged -- in short, he says that the other company was trying to scam us to drum up costs, and that they probably bled out the refrigerant themselves. He also said they were gouging us on the cost of the refrigerant ($70/lb.) since, as I knew, our HVAC unit is too new to accept the old type of refrigerant that is being phased out by the EPA. And, the original contractors told us our tank was 15 pounds. The honest HVAC guy laughed and said it was actually a 10 pound tank. He spent another 30 minutes or so fixing the zone control board, refilled the refrigerant, and gave us an invoice for $300, which I paid on the spot. We then contacted the home warranty company and asked them about a cash payout instead of actually having their people do the work. The cash payout was just under $1,000. We took it, and received that check a week or two later. Now, the home warranty company is sending us an invoice for $75 for the second service call with their contractors. My question is this: Should I contact the home warranty company and explain to them what happened and tell them that I am not going to pay $75 for a service call for unscrupulous contractors to come, bleed our refrigerant, make up damages, and try to scam us? Or, if I do that, will they then try to (and have a legitimate right to) recoup the ~$1,000 they paid us in the cash out? Obviously if we pay $75, we still come out ahead, but I just can't stomach doing that. On the other hand, this will continue to happen to other people if the warranty company doesn't know that the contractors they're using are scammers. [link] [comments] |
Lapse in my coverage (2 days) and was hit by a drunk driver (No injuries, He's at fault) Posted: 24 Jan 2020 05:41 AM PST Similar to another post, I was just hit by a drunk driver that was speeding (running from a cop that tried to pull him over). He blew through a red light and hit me. When I logged into my insurance app, I saw that my policy cancelled on the 22nd, 2 days ago because my last payment didn't go through and I thought I had a few more days to make the payment up. My car was totaled, but probably only worth $4k. Since my policy expired, how do I collect from his insurance company since I'm uninsured and I don't have an insurance company to contact their insurance company for me. He was at fault. I'm check to check so i don't have money for a lawyer. I was relying on driving rideshare, which I can't do right now without my car. [link] [comments] |
Help with a Diminished Valuation Claim Posted: 24 Jan 2020 08:47 AM PST So about 9 months ago my 2015 F150 was parked in front of my house and was side swiped by another vehicle. The other drivers insurance (Dairyland Insurance) ended up accepting fault and paying the claim after a lot of hoops were jumped through and back and forth fighting. The total for the repairs was around $3000 and the extent of the damage was front fender and 2 doors (minor damage all in all with it being a side swipe at around 20-30 mph) So about 3 months ago I made a diminished value claim with them and after about 6 weeks they get back to me with a number of $750. Now when the independent adjuster came out to take the post repair pictures for Dairyland, I asked his opinion and he felt the DV offer would be "a few hundred bucks at best" based on the extent of the damage. After finally getting the $750 offer, I got KBB and NADA trade in evaluations that represented the condition of my vehicle WITHOUT a reported insurance claim on the history report, and then went to Carmax and got a written appraisal that I was sure included the full report which in fact did show the accident. KBB and NADA averaged anywhere from $26,000-$28,000 for very good to clean trade in. Carmax offered $25,000. I email the adjuster back and explain that while my 22k mile mint condition truck should be at the high end, I'll be willing to meet at the middle for fairness sake and take a check for $2000 After another 10 days of him sitting on that email and explanation, he calls to tell me "We can throw in another $100 to "make this go away" but we're not getting anywhere close to the $2000 you want". So I offer to meet him at a more fair number, say $1250. He says "Yea we can't even do that. We didn't start low just to meet you in the middle like you may think. $750 was all the money so $850 is the best your going to see. And remember, your Carmax offer was the start of a negotiation, you could always settle on more money from them" to which I reply "True but the fault of this diminished value is on you, NOT Carmax. Your the one that needs to make me 100% whole, not 95% whole and tell me good luck with Carmax" I have been dealing with this back and forth for nearly a year now and just want it to be over with but also hate seeing horrible companies get away with treating people like this. I know getting a lawyer/legal advice is an option but with a ~$1000 delta AT MOST, it hardly seems worth it. Help me figure out what else can be done! Thanks everyone! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jan 2020 08:46 AM PST Tl;dr: i'm worried that because this isn't caused by a singular incident and because of how complex the issue is that my claim wil be denied and i'll be totally screwed. My home of 2.5 years is on a mixed foundation. Half of it being the original, incredibly shallow, brick perimeter with a poorly supported center beam and the other half being a concrete slab add on. The listing said it was all slab and with the house being recently flipped and sub 1ksqft i didn't spend the money on an inspection like i now know i should have. Since moving in the brick foundation has sunk below the slab side. There is not enough room for a functional crawl space nor was there access to it. I also had a woodchuck problem which required me to open the floor and fix some floor joists. I then dug down next to the foundation outside and broke through the brick and began digging dirt out to access more floor joists. At some point the floor dropped so bad in one corner of the house that there's now a ~2" gap between the the wall and floor. Further complications are that i have 2ft between the back of my house and the perimeter fence for the highway. I'm near an overpass on the highway so the grade is much higher than my house but there's a ditch between that and my property. I don't have any water issues. No standing water in my yard and the dirt under my house is dry. However, they will be adding additional lanes and a noise wall this year. I'm sure this will bring the elevated ground much closer ro my house. As i said, there's a lot going on and i'm nervous an agent won't touch my case. How can i best present this in my favor? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
