New Safety Gizmos Are Making Car Insurance More Expensive

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 08:49 AM PST

The high cost of repairing sensor-packed vehicles outpaces the savings from fewer crashes.

American car insurance rates are going up up up. In the last decade, they climbed 29.6 percent to an average of $1,548 in 2019 from $1,194 in 2011. The surge, detailed in a new report from insurance shopping site The Zebra, outpaced both inflation (by far) and the increase in average car prices (more narrowly). And it came even as the rate of crashes has fallen year over year.

Aggrieved drivers have plenty of directions to point their fingers. Vehicle theft is on the rise, and extreme weather fueled by climate change can destroy swaths of vehicles in short order. Hurricane Harvey wrecked up to 1 million cars in the Houston area in 2017. And while crash rates have dropped, they've been buoyed by increasing urbanization and a strong economy, which put more drivers—many of them distracted by smartphones—in tighter spaces.

A more surprising, counterintuitive culprit isn't the wider world or the person behind the wheel, but the car itself. It turns out that new features designed to keep vehicles in their lanes and out of trouble are contributing to rising insurance rates.

(US) Received a check from my insurance company after other parties insurance repaired my car

    Posted: 28 Jan 2020 03:01 AM PST

I was in a vehicle collision back in August of 2019, I was not at fault and attempted to get my car repaired through the other parties insurance company (AAA). I was getting nowhere with them for a few months because their customer was denying liability even though the police came out and put the other driver at fault on the police report.

I then get a phone call from AAA out of the blue in December and they concluded that their customer was at fault, they took care the repairs to my vehicle that same week.

The thing is I filled a claim with my insurance company back in September because I saw I was getting nowhere with AAA.

I have collision and comprehensive coverage, my insurance company was gonna cover the repairs minus my $1,000 deductible. I never received confirmation from my adjuster that they were going to send me a check or anything, so I just left the matter alone since I thought my email never made it to the adjuster and I didn't feel like putting 1k of my money for the minimal damage to my car.

But then lo and behold, the same week my car is being repaired (in December) I get a check in the mail for the cost of my repairs that AAA already paid for.

The check has been sitting in a drawer for the past month, I feel like this is double dipping and the money doesn't belong to me. What should I do from here? The money doesn't belong to me correct?

Why would someone commit arson and burn down their house? If the insurance company wouldn't be able to prove it was set on fire on purpose, people could use the money to pay off loans and mortgages, but they would be left without a home. Why?

Thoughts on Foremost insurance for rental property? Should I switch from Allstate?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 06:09 PM PST

I'm currently insured by Allstate for my rental home. Seems like Foremost offers the exact same policy for approx. $150/year less.

Thoughts on switching? If coverage is equal, is there any reason for me not to switch? I'm also curious if folks here have any experience dealing with claims with Foremost and how that process went...

State Farm doesn't want to pay, need advice. X-Post from personalfinance & LegalAdvice

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 05:00 PM PST

My house was built-in 1988 and we recently had an issue with rain damage. The rain ran off the roof, and down the exterior wall, then into a closet. State Farm estimated the damage at $10,000 however, they said it was not covered as it was workmanship issue. Is this a valid reason to deny my claim? Is there anything I can do?

    Driving license requirement?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 10:31 PM PST

Do you have to use US driving license to rent a car to take advantage of car rental insurance provided by US credit card?

Also, can I still use car rental insurance on my credit card if I permanently move to another country and get another driving license there but still using this card to rent?

Can my health insurance deny me coverage of surgery based on "failing to meet requirements" that are not stated in their coverage policy ?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 07:13 PM PST

For background: I'm transgender, and my insurance is Cigna. I've been trying to get top surgery (double mastectomy) for a while now. I live in the US. Their policy says this:

Gender reassignment surgery (see Table 1) is considered medically necessary treatment of gender dysphoria when the individual is age 18 years or older and when the following criteria are met:

    • For initial mastectomy: one letter of support from a qualified mental health professional

    That's the only requirement.

About 3 months ago, I was finally able to submit a letter of support through my surgeon. 1 month later, I received a letter from my insurance saying it was denied, on the grounds of not meeting the necessary requirements. According to them, I need two letters of support, proof of having been on hormone replacement therapy, and proof of having "lived as my preferred gender" for 12 months.

I contacted my surgeon and asked whether this was expected, and I was told that it is not, but that the easiest course of action for me is to go meet these new requirements, as opposed to trying for an appeal.

Unfortunately, that's easier said than done.

In the meantime, while trying to meet the new requirements, I've done some additional research. No-where have I found anything that says I need anything other than a single letter of support for them to cover this surgery.

So my question is this: Do I actually need to meet these new requirements, or is there some way to hold them to what they've written in all their documentation ? I am encountering roadblock after roadblock, which is especially aggravating considering that I should have been in the clear months ago.

It's been a long time since I've called them to discuss insurance things (I have shitty hearing that makes phone calls difficult), but if there's a chance that saying the right things to the right person will fix this, I'd really like to know.

    My best friend is pregnant

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 06:00 PM PST

So my friend found out she's pregnant and is freaking out about insurance: she's self-employed and has gone the past few years without any insurance. She's single but is happy to keep the baby.

The good news is that she's a doctor so her income is fantastic. She could go out of pocket for OBGYN care and even for a normal vaginal birth, but the thing is, she doesn't want is a giant bankruptcy-inducing NICU bill if there were any complications.

With the open enrollment period over and with her not living in CT or NY (states where pregnancy is a qualifying event), are there any options to obtaining health insurance inside that won't deny her coverage?

What options would I have for health insurance if I left may job without immediately finding another?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 05:03 PM PST

So I'm in a position where I am growing very tired of my current employer. I work for a food delivery tech company that has skyrocketed in growth from the time I've began working here in late 2018. I'm starting to really consider making a career switch but have not been able to nail down another job in the last 6ish months. Health insurance being the main reason why I'm continuing to suffer through this job being unhappy for quite some time now.I would ideally love to be self employed one day (I'll get to that later).

I'm 30 years old, single with no kids and have about 30k saved (5k of which is tied up into ETF's ). I currently live at my father's house by choice (in Arizona) in order to grow my savings. I have a good living situation here, where I basically inhabit a guest house free of charge and have minimal expenses per month (approximately 300 dollars/ month for phone, car inusrance, groceries, etc.).

I am beginning to explore other options and am thoroughly confused and disheartened by the structure of the American healthcare system, which is why I come to you fine folks for assistance.

If I understand correctly, if I were to leave my current job I would have these 3 options:

    -COBRA

    -Medicare

    -Private healthcare coverage

I reached out to my benefits helpline at work today to find out more about COBRA, waiting to hear back if my current employer offers insurance

I highly doubt I would be eligible for Medicare

3 )It's starting to look like private healthcare would be my only option if I decided to quit my job. Healthcare.gov appears to be a joke from what I am able to gather from limited research. I obtained private healthcare about 2-3 years ago for $250 a month (it appeared to be awful coverage) for what it's worth.

I'm really looking for the cheapest possible coverage as I'm a relatively healthy guy as far as I know, probably a high deductible plan with lower premiums I'm thinking would be ideal for me.

Another notable thing I would like to mention is that my dream is to be self employed, running e-commerce marketplaces and also trading the stock market but I would be applying for other jobs as well if I decided to leave my job. I've profited approximately $1000 in 3 months between stocks and ETF's ($800 profit in stocks and $200 profit from ETF's). I haven't began my e-commerce store's yet but have been researching into the possibility for a couple years now. I figured I'd mention this as I truly would be happiest if I could earn a living from these 2 revenue streams, looking to add a 3rd revenue stream if this did become a reality. Private healthcare coverage might be a long term thing for me if I could get some wind behind this plan.

Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated, friends, I just would like to know more about what my options would hypothetically be. For the very least to feel a little bit more in control of my life. I understand staying at my current position would be the best option all things considered, so any advice about how I could potentially find alternative coverage would be welcome.

THANK YOU IF YOU TOOK THE TIME TO READ :)

I really am so confused about health insurance in America and some support and guidance would certainly help, much love. <3

    TLDR:

Hate my job, want to leave it before I can find another but want to find out more about alternative options for healthcare coverage in the meantime. 30 year old single male w/ no kids and 30k saved living in AZ. I would be willing to spend as much up to $500 a month if need be. Want to find the cheapest possible plan to get my through my next journey in life.

A little confused about this charge

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 04:36 PM PST

I broke my jaw back in November. I have Cigna through my employer, who does the usual in-network benefit many health insurances do. I went to a near by hospital, Robert Wood Johnson, where my jaw was operated on by a surgeon named Amy. This entire procedure was taken care of financially by Cigna.

During my follow up weeks later with Amy, she decided I would need a post operation. My wisdom tooth complicated my healing. Fine. Amy scheduled me to return to the same hospital, where she operated on me again. This time, Cigna is claiming that Amy is out of network, and that I may be charged 5k for her services. Is this normal? It doesn't make much sense to me.

Can GAP insurance be denied if service on car is performed by a person and not a shop?

I want to fix a leaking hose on my coworkers car, but could her GAP insurance deny(in the event of a total loss) on her car loan if there was work NOT performed by a shop? She has a loan, no a lease

And it's Wisconsin, USA if that makes any difference.

Cancelling Lemonade Refund -- is it full? are there fees?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 03:15 PM PST

I am having trouble seeing the full contract for renters insurance before paying from Lemonade.

On their website, it says you can cancel anytime for a refund for the remaining time. Does anyone who has cancelled a policy know if this is a full refund and if there is any fee involved?

    Thanks!

    Insurance might deny me coverage

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 09:07 AM PST

Hey guys, sorry if this is the wrong subreddit, but I was recently hit in the back of my car and I do not like where it is going.

I have been going back and forth with the insurance of the one who hit me and they have been updating me on some things and I dont know how to approach this.

They said that the car she was driving was registered under her name but not under her policy. They have been trying to get in contact with her but she keeps avoiding them so they are not able to find out why she was driving that car.

The part that bothers me is that they said if they cannot contact her they will deny me coverage and I will have to do the repairs on my own.

Can they do that? What would be the best solution to this?

Edit: Reading the responses it seems that they can do this. I will take your advice and go through my own insurance instead. Thank you all for the quick and informative responses

    Insurance and Condo's

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 06:44 AM PST

Hi, I recently had an issue with my Condo. I own my Condo unit and a couple weeks ago A fire sprinkler pipe burst in the roof of my Condo unit causing Damage. The Sprinkler Pipe is listed as Common Property.

The Condo corp is replacing the Floors, Walls, Roof. My Insurance is covering the Contents. I have a $1,000 deductible and asked the Condo board to pay it which they refuse. Would they not have to pay the deductible as it is Common Property (Sprinkler line) that burst and caused damage to my unit?

The Condo board is open to listening to my argument, however I am not 100% sure on the rules/laws.

I am in Edmonton,Alberta,Canada if that helps

Accident In Borrowed Car and Insurance Premiums

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 01:29 PM PST

Recently I lent my car to a friend, who then promptly got into an accident and was deemed at-fault (I was not in the car). I paid the deductible on my insurance (GEICO) to repair the car.

Will my insurance premiums increase even though I was not even in the vehicle? I have never been in an accident before and have been driving for 14+ years. I also received a notice from the state (Massachusetts) that deemed my friend to be the operator of the vehicle.

New Car Replacement Policy - Process Time? Auto Insurance

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 12:48 PM PST

Unfortunately, my car got totaled. Since I have the new car replacement policy by Allstate that additional add-on kicks in.

Can someone tell me if this is normal process time for this type of claim?

Car was marked totaled by insurance on 1-22-2020 (and on that day was forwarded to another adjuster since its not something that field adjuster is working on)

New adjuster picked up the claim on the same day and I'm still waiting for him to come back to me. Is this normal turnaround or should I be worried?

Roughly 3-4 business days from time it was marked totaled.

    Thank you in advance.

Confused about if I’m getting screwed or not

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 12:17 PM PST

Hey there, I just got into a minor accident last week when a school work truck hit my car, while I was parked eating lunch. the school district is self insured(not exactly sure what that means) but when I contacted their appointed insurance person he said he had to pay the body shop for the work instead of paying me because I don't own my car, Is this true? I thought he had no duty to protect my lean because I'm not his client? Kinda feel like he's taking advantage of my younger age, and that this is being my first accident of any kind.

Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you so much!
