If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or other "advice for my personal situation" questions. If you are going to ask how to invest you should include relevant information, such as the following:

    • How old are you?
    • Are you employed/making income? How much?
    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive significant other?
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?
    • Any big debts?
    • Any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

Where is Buffett's $128 billion in "Cash" really invested in?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2020 08:09 AM PST

I keep seeing this CNBC article around: Warren Buffett has $128 billion in cash to burn and analysts can't figure out why he isn't spending it.

But I can't believe this $128 billion cash pile is actually just cash being held in a savings account at a bank. I wonder if it is invested in bonds and then I wonder which ones (US government?) and at what interest rate? Does anyone know?

Why not have a big chunk in leveraged ETFs?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2020 02:27 PM PST

Why aren't leveraged etfs such as UPRO and SSO a good investment option for long term investing? If investing horizon is 15+ years, these seem like a great wealth amplifier. So many articles online label them as "to risky".

Coronavirus pandemic - what do you think?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 04:06 AM PST

    https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2020-01-27/coronavirus-pandemic-may-spark-market-panic-but-try-to-resist-k5vzim8y?cmpid=BBD012720_OUS&utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter&utm_term=200127&utm_campaign=openamericas

According to this article, there are many similarities with previous pandemics such as SARS (2003), Ebola (2014) and MERS (2015) and it seems that crowd psychology is taking over the markets.
What do you think the effects on the markets will be? Are you going to sell/reallocate or are you going to hold until the virus is contained?

Why does everyone say you can't time the market , yet many of successful investors like Buffet and Cuban, bought low after the last crash and made a fortune?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2020 06:02 PM PST

So we hear the mantra, you can't time the market , blah blah blah, but if you look at the behavior of fairly successful folks , many did exactly that, Buffet increased his holding in a bunch a companies right after the 2007-08 crash, Marc Cuban did similar in the aftermath of the Dot.com bubble.

I understand you can't time the market exactly (sell at the highest, buy at the lowest or vice versa if shorting..), but you seldom need to do that. I suspect you just need to be aware of pending changes, plenty of historical and recent data can point you to shifting global local economic conditions, you just need to be aware of these. Sure sometimes you may be off by a large amount of time like Michael Burry in the Big short .. but then eventually the trend manifests itself.. Isn't this all a form of timing the market (Economy).

Tanger Outlet Shares Surge as Shorts get Squeezed, due to ETF rules

I thought this was quite interesting and wanted to share as I hadn't seen it mentioned.

Tanger fell below the market cap and via rules was being pushed out of ETF. It's kind of backfired on shorts as price has risen.

    Should I use Stop Loss?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2020 08:01 PM PST

In the past, I have lost a lot of money by buying stocks off hype and then the stocks losing 50% or more and never recovering. I recently learned about the Stop Loss exit plan. Sounds like a smart way to go. Set a stop loss at 5 or 10% and minimizing risk of loss. Do others use this exit plan regularly? Is is a smart idea?

Would negative interest rates effect cash balances under investments portfolios?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2020 10:11 PM PST

Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question. I was wondering if there were to be negative rates, would it have any impact on the cash you keep within a brokerage account? I know some of them already give you interest off your cash balance while others do not. If they don't, would that change? Otherwise, wouldn't people simply keep there cash there if they want to remain liquid?

Coronavirus, FOMC, BOE, and Brexit Will Lead Week Ahead

    Posted: 26 Jan 2020 09:52 AM PST

Wow! I'm sure not many people expected a risk off move this week due to the outbreak of a virus! With 3 Central Bank meetings (BOC turned dovish) and a return to watching the economic data after US trade deals were signed (USMCA to be signed next week), the most dominant event this week which affected the markets was the Coronavirus. So far, the virus has killed 26 people and infected more than 900. China has quarantined cities and canceled many public events during its New Years Holiday, which is expected to take a hit on Q1 GDP. There have been 2 confirmed cases so far in the US.

On the opening next week, the focus will likely continue to be the Coronavirus. If there are more confirmed cases over the weekend, especially outside of China, we could see some markets gapping on the open.

There are two major Central Bank meetings next week, which include the US Federal Reserve and the Bank of England.

Investing friends money for them under my brokerage account, legal or illegal?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2020 10:04 PM PST

So after the recent oil dip, I've had friends ask me to invest money into the market for them (specifically crude oil futures). The amount is less than 20,000 and this is what has been agreed upon:

This is essentially a lottery ticket, they are willing to lose the entire amount, and I've known them long enough to know they wouldn't be too bothered to see it go away. The important question is, is it okay for me to be investing money for other people, especially these small amounts with them fully knowing I am not a registered investor and fully accepting that this is a gamble that could end with nothing?

Specifically, I'd be buying futures options for them so they can only go to $0.

EDIT: money would be in my account, and invested by me. I'm not looking for recommendations for/against the practice of investing friends money, I know it's widely discouraged. I'm asking about the legal aspects.

3x leveraged ETFs in Roth long term bought during recession.

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 01:44 AM PST

I plan on putting a grand or two in a Roth into TQQQ after the long awaited recession starts and letting it sit for the next business cycle or two I have 22 years till retirement. I've back tested this strategy $10k bought in 2009 would be worth $500k today. Any thoughts only a grand or two won't kill me.

What are the high impact factor journals on portfolio management?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2020 08:16 PM PST

Sometimes Journal of Finance and Journal of Financial Economics issues, for example, have too many papers on Corporate Finance and too few on Portfolio Management.

Are there any specific journals, with high impact factor, on the Portfolio Management theme? Im doing the theoretical review for my thesis and i'm not sure where to look.

Are GOLD ETF's a "scam" since since the underlying asset isn't actual gold, but rather buying shares of the Trustee (ETF).?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2020 07:33 PM PST

So after reading this piece. It seems that buying shares in popular gold ETF's like GLD or IAU isn't really backed by Gold at all its just ETF shares themselves.. the article below explains this in detail.

    https://www.forbes.com/sites/oliviergarret/2017/03/09/3-reasons-why-investors-should-avoid-gold-etfs/#32d7f9364dd8

I suspect most of us here buy gold as a hedge against a down stock market or economy. But if the ETf's are truly paper, then there's a good chance that during a severe economic event, the counter-parties (HSBC GLD ETF ) may not be able to honor the obligation, which I take to mean if if the midst of crash you need to sell they wouldn't be able to honor it if they are in economic difficulty. Is this true are there any regulatory safeguards that would prevent this?
