How to set up a business in Canada?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 01:57 AM PST

I'm trying to register a business as my freelancing hobby makes a pretty decent amount now. How do I register a business, What is the process?

To be more specific, I'm in Alberta if that helps. And I would want to incorporate it.

I've read the "how to" online but they confuse me more than help.

If anyone is able to simplify it for me and answers some of my questions it would mean a lot to me!

Looking for the best websites to sell merchandise with my designs! Any recommendations?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2020 05:44 PM PST

I make art and want to start uploading them to websites which will handle all the printing and distribution for me, that isn't difficult to get started and work with, and have great ratings and reviews

I've already made an account at Red Bubble. Also any recommendations on getting my art in popular stores such as Hot Topic, Zumiez, Tilly's, etc?

Do I need to go to design school for a business in fashion?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2020 05:15 PM PST

I don't know if this is the right place to post this but I'm interested in fashion and want to have my own clothing business with my own line and products of my design. I want to learn more about garment construction to be able to design my own products. I know I can probably learn it all on my own with a lot of resources on the internet but is there anything important I'm missing from a college design degree in terms of learning how to design and make clothing? I want to learn how to learn sewing, pattern making, etc and I was wondering if it's actually possible to accomplish that without having to go to college for a degree in design. I currently live in Canada and am graduating with a degree in biology. Since my decision to start a business is a recent one I've decided to graduate and work to save up until I can start a business instead of spending another four years getting a design degree. Thank you for reading.

Should I get a degree in business?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2020 08:54 AM PST

I am 20 years old and my goal is to start my own doggy daycare/boarding/ grooming business. I already have a lot of experience with dogs and currently work at a facility right now just like I want to own... but everyone around me is saying I should get my Associates in Business as a fall back plan and to learn more about marketing and business law... ect. I'm only 2 semesters (one school year) away and a few summer classes from graduating with that degree, but I don't know if it's worth it.

What do you guys think? Thanks for any input.

When a business changes its name, does the sequence of presidents change?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2020 12:27 PM PST

If someone was President of ABC and seven presidents later the business changes to XYZ, how do you refer to the current president? Is he the first president of XYZ or 7th of XYZ? Any insight is helpful. Thank you!

    New to the C Suite

    Posted: 26 Jan 2020 11:48 AM PST

I've just been promoted to a Chief Officer (trying to stay vague for anonymity's sake) position. It's an acting appointment that could become permanent at the end of three months, or they could start a new search. I have lots of technical expertise which is why I'm getting this chance, but no executive experience. Any advice for a newbie on making this jump? What would you do to be successful? It's a government agency if that helps.

Question about starting an online business requiring physical warehouse(s) and headquarters

    Posted: 26 Jan 2020 08:25 AM PST

I'll preface that I have little industry or business knowledge. I'm just comfortable with coding and getting my feet wet with app development. This is also NOT an existing business I'm promoting.

I recently thought up of a concept that I won't go into full details about but could potentially be viable in the consumer market. The general gist of it is that there is a web/mobile app, and a physical warehouse where items are stored and shipped from to app users. Both components are crucial for the business to operate as intended.

This isn't something that could be facilitated by existing online storefronts (i.e. Facebook Marketplace, eBay, or other online retailers)

My question is, without actual $$$/resources to put into this business idea, in particular for the physical establishment, what is a reasonable approach to getting something like this off the ground?

My current idea is creating a demo and somehow allocating funding/investors?

If there are other subs I should direct my questions to please let me know.

    Thanks!

This is my first “real job” out of college and Im almost positive that I dont want it to be my career.

    Posted: 26 Jan 2020 07:07 AM PST

I work as an analyst at a bank. Graduated last year with Accounting and Statistics. I enjoyed both majors, but this job doesnt really require either of those skills. Its a lot of data entry. A good bit of problem solving too, which helps the day go by. Honestly its a great job that anyone would be proud to have, but I know Ill get tired eventually, so Im trying to plan my exit. My biggest priority is living somewhere that it snows, and with mountains relatively close by. Currently living in the south. I want to move to Colorado or Pennsylvania. I think where I live os more important to me than what I do. So regardless, that is going to be my first hurdle. Second, I want to work around cars. Driving(anywhere) is my favorite thing to do. I want to have a job where the context of the work is centered around cars/transportation. I dont want to be locked in at the office all day long, and I want there to be travel required on occasion. Looking for $50-60k/yr, so I know that I need to build my resume up a good bit. Im working on some online certifications.

This probably sounds like venting but if anyone has advice it would be greatly appreciated. I love to work, and looking for something less political. In my current role, everyone is stepping on everyone elses toes. Not my style. Im about honesty and integrity. I need to make a change within the next 1-2 years and I want to get it right.
