21 year old runs into money and wants to invest

Hello, I'm a full time college student from Michigan (not in debt). I am about to come into 17,000 dollars via a will within the next month. I'm not looking to invest all of it but some of it. I've never invest before but have a basic knowledge of stock market. I know everyone thinks i should invest in a mutual fund or something like that for later benefit, but Ive been thinking about high risk high reward stocks as an option. Maybe a trip to Vegas is my best bet lol who knows? What would you do if you were in my shoes?

ETF long term investment vs short term transaction

I hold a bunch of ETF's and have found all of them up (unsurprising given the market). An advisor told me it would be smart to take somewhere of those gains and then put them away in a more "safe" account (high interest savings as an example which is currently as high as 3.3%) as there may be a correction so I should hedge against that.

I had always thought that buying ETF's was a way to simply put money away and not think about it for 10 years. Now I am confused. What are your thoughts on essentially balancing an ETF portfolio?
