What helped me most in my business

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 06:20 AM PST

Hard work is essential but overrated. You can spend hours and hours working hard but that doesn't mean that you'll get the results you were aspiring for. Having a healthy routine and creative time to reflect and attract is key to success. Taking care of yourself physically and mentally means that you'll have better ideas and more energy to do things effectively. Don't exhaust yourself, do things intelligently instead. Once you change your mindset and your view about money/hard work, you'll start seeing real results.

The trade off of success: loneliness

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 07:16 PM PST

A decade ago, in 2008, I was unemployed and lost everything I had due to the financial collapse at the time in the US. I ended up finding a job for the next three years while at the same time I was looking for a way to work for myself and from anywhere, to avoid anyone else being able to fire me or be stuck somewhere that perhaps I couldn't afford. I also lost all my fair weathered friends and my parents turned their backs on me.

While employed those last three years, I began in affiliate marketing to see what I could earn. My goal was to earn at least $1200 USD per month to afford rent, utilities, and cheap pizza, and not work for anyone else while sitting happily at a local Starbucks to feel like maybe I belonged somewhere while plugging away at my future.

Fast forward to 2019, the affiliate marketing attempt was a struggle for several years, but it took an amazing turn for the better in 2014.

Today I have seven employees and I'm earning $20,000 per month profit, with a projection to increase profit by 50% in just a few months due to a product release to the same set of customers I've cultivated over the last decade.

So dream checklist: - work for myself, done. I don't have a boss. - work from wherever I want, done. I don't have an office and work from my laptop. - earn at least $1200 USD per month, done.

In some immature way, I wish all the naysayers who didn't believe in my, the friends and family who turned their backs on me, could see the level of success I've achieved, and not in an arrogant way, but in a "hey look, I'm not a loser after all, please accept me now."

Ironically or not, I still don't have any friends. My dad became terminally ill and has since passed away. I've attempted to keep in touch with people but to generally no avail.

I'm happy that I made something of myself. My company is worth about $3 million, I'll soon be profiting $30k per month. While I am married, I haven't anyone to share my success with, not even other like-minded entrepreneurs to share war stories with.

Am I being immature? Has any other entrepreneur here experienced similar? Don't we all want to feel accepted?

Ironically too, because I had lost everything back in 2008, I never did rebuild my credit, and although I've become a self-made millionaire, I can't get a credit card. LOL

In the end I'm hoping to hear from others who are also dealing with loneliness despite success.

    Thanks for reading.

You have $2k in starting capital, some basic software development knowledge, and time. What do you do?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 10:18 AM PST

I really want to do something. Im 21, have a full scholarship for school, no debt, and a decent job for my age. I'm highly motivated, but am at a complete loss as for what to do. I'm tempted to get started in drop shipping, but it seems as if that boat has sailed. Beyond that, I just don't know.

I have 2k to spend, I'm a meh software developer but nothing prodigious, and I'll happily work 16+ hours a day on my business if I can just find something that I believe would work. Any suggestions?

When is it okay to admit your business is not working?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 10:15 AM PST

    Serious question.

I am first-time business owner (professional organizer focusing on nurseries and children's rooms for higher end clientele) and I knew this wouldn't be easy, but I feel like I am expending a significant amount of effort and not seeing any returns. I have a full-time job, but every free minute is focused on my business. I don't get enough inquiries to justify a VA, but I have an accountant who takes care of billing, an appointment system that takes care of any consultations, and templates I've created for general inquiries. I've placed ads on Google, Facebook, and Pinterest. I attend networking events weekly after my day job and pass out as much information as possible. I've attended expos as an exhibitor where I've distributed materials and offered 15% off my services if they mention the expo.

Frankly, I'm exhausted. I'm not sure I can put much more money into my business unless I get 3 clients lined up before January. My goal was to at line up 4 clients a month and I'm embarrassed to say I'm not even close to that goal.

Maybe I'm spending too much effort on this business. Maybe I'm choosing the wrong efforts for this industry. Maybe this is too niche to find a steady stream of customers. Maybe I need to focus on products in addition to services? I just don't know. It's been a year and I am feeling like I have no clue what I am doing.

Is it ever okay to admit something isn't working?

Take a moment to list your achievements for 2019

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 09:54 AM PST

Ok fellow entrepreneurs. We all tend to set higher expectations for ourselves and almost always never satisfied. I am one of those as well. But my wise wife told me that sometimes, it is good to think about what you HAVE achieved instead of worrying about the continuous and evolving goals that you keep working towards. This is not for anyone else, just for you the entrepreneur.

Take a moment to think about everything you did get done in 2019 even if you may not be completely satisfied with your results (don't we always want more). Think about them, write them down if it helps and pat yourself on the back for 5 seconds. Smile and feel proud. Remember you may not be there yet but you are one step closer. Then, back to the grind!!!!

    DBA of an LLC- reference?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 09:50 AM PST

How do you word the connections from your DBAs (doing business as) to your LLC?

    Our LLC has 2 DBAs

Would we say: Acme Parts a product of Acme LLC? Acme Parts an Amce LLC Business?

Google searches have been rather unhelpful.

I'm in the tech industry and there are plenty of Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals on training sites. Which is great for technical education. But I want to branch out and start my own business. However, WTF do I do? Was thinking there might be business education to increase my knowledge and help me to discover opportunities.

Selling Product To a Network of Local Businesses

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 01:20 PM PST

I previously had a failed product, which I tried to sell in the over competitive amazon space many years back that raced to the bottom on a very low price point product. But I gained experience dealing with suppliers in china, negotiating, shipping, branding.

I am considering starting with a new product with a higher price point. Starting with less units, and starting by selling to local businesses that can offer it to their customers, since it will be very inline with those customers needs. I see a gap in the market. If things go well, I would consider going to different cities and doing a similar thing and building a small network that way.

Does anyone have any resources on following this approach, or experience on this approach to build a business?

I have a business idea (mobile app based). Who can I chat with?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 12:31 PM PST

Maybe I'm being paranoid by not wanting to "leak" it here. Already got feedback from a couple friends who like the idea. But I'd like to run it by someone other than family/friends.

Of course there are some competitors already - I can never think of something that is entirely original. Trying to not let that discourage me though.

The existing competitors are still really small, and don't seem to be very active or have much (if any) funding.

At least this means it's a viable solution if other's are attempting it.

Interview with entrepreneurs: Grit over grades

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 11:57 AM PST

    Hello fellow entrepreneurs!

This is my very first Reddit post and I would like to do an online interview of some entrepreneurs who are founders or co-founder in their companies not only for a school project, but to gain insight from any your experiences that could help me grow in any way as a budding entrepreneur. My deadline is coming up this week, so I appreciate any response that I can get, and I hope I can learn some important lessons from this great community!

Originally I had an acquaintance to interview who unfortunately got tied up and has opted out of the interview due to a busy schedule. However I would like to take this opportunity to reach and gather answers from many different entrepreneurs and founders(although I'll only use one for the assignment, but it's the lessons that's important!), who have different paths and experiences.

    A little background on myself:

My parents were immigrants that came to the United States and then to Canada to escape the harsh conditions in Vietnam around the 80s. From there I was born in Canada and had the fortune of having loving parents and the rights and opportunities in a first rate country that would not be possible in my parents homeland. My parents were very hard working and saved up enough money to eventually open their own business, expanding to 3 stores and winning multiple awards. My father was a major influence and inspiration on me that ultimately shaped my values and who I am today. He was a natural born salesman and overcame stacked odds in a foreign country with nothing but ambition. My mother was more stern and acted as an anchor. However, the biggest impact that my parents left on me was my father's determination to be his own boss and never have to work for anyone else again. My parents worked hard and tried their best, but they were often too busy to raise me and my siblings, so we were mainly raised by my grandparents and television.

After school I started a fitness business with my friend that had failed along with our friendship, which caused me to become heavily depressed for some time and left me feeling empty inside. Add to that, my parents divorced and I ended my long term relationship and everything seemed to be tumbling down. However, I am generally an optimist and self-driven so luckily I was able to muster the strength to get back on my feet and keep moving along. The path of entrepreneurship is my lifelong passion and ambition. Now I am back in school in a program focused on entrepreneurship and innovation to fill in the gaps of some of my weaknesses and round out my business acumen a bit more. In my opinion, I find it really difficult to actually learn/teach entrepreneurship in a standardized school environment; I believe it really depends on the teachers and how they interact with and how they challenge you, among other things. I'm really more interested in meeting passionate and creative people that have a similar vision, or can share their own visions with me.

As a person who has worked as a personal trainer, I highly value fitness and health, as well as the mindset to push your body and mind in whatever you do to achieve the best that you possibly can (one major inspiration and personal hero is the king Arnold himself). My next business plan is to create a company that can offer fitness related supplements and nutrition products to students and young adults as my target market, as well as nootropics as healthier alternative to abusing Adderall to study for exams; a growing trend I've realized since returning to school. I want to build a brand that resonates with students who are just starting to figure out who they are to be able to see what possible heights they can reach.

    Here are my questions:

    • Tell me a little about your life …
    • Where were you born? Where did you grow up and what was your childhood like?
    • Who are some of your greatest role models that have influenced who you have become today?
    • As a child did you ever think about running a company? Did you have any particular dreams or ambitions?
    • Did you have strong interests in school?
    • Did you have work experience or educational training in the same industry as your business before you started?
    • What triggered the idea for you to start your business? Where did the idea come from?
    • Did you have a failed business yet, or made a big mistake in business that was a massive setback? How did you deal with it and pick yourself back up again?
    • Did you have other businesses that failed? What were they and what went wrong?
    • What advice can you give to someone about how to get past your failures?
    • Tell me how you got started in this business …
    • What was your primary reason for starting this business?
    • If there was one thing you could do differently what would it be?
    • What was biggest challenge you faced in starting the business? How did you overcome this?
    • How much time did it take from getting the idea to the first day of business? How many hours a day did you spend working on it
    • Did you face any criticism or other pressure from family or friends? Conversely, did anyone stand out as particularly encouraging or helpful to you?
    • How did you finance the business start-up?
    • Tell me about your business, what kind of company is it?
    • Are you working towards your passion in your business?
    • Who is your ideal customer?
    • Can your business operate without you now?
    • What are your weaknesses?
    • What are some possible blind spots that you might be avoiding?
    • If there was one thing you could do differently what would it be?
    • and lastly, What advice would you give a "wantrepreneur" trying to become an entrepreneur?

    Thanks for your interest.

Mixing different innovations and features into a product?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 11:43 AM PST

Tesla for example mixed in Google's revelation that self driving cars were possible. Mixed in electric vehicle technology which was already created. The outcome is a car that performs like a 200k performance car, self driving, better safety and electric. Tesla is competing with the german premium cars, and sports cars with how fast and how premium the car is.

Apple mixed in mp3 with a easy to use software and style. This sold much better than the other mp3 players. Then came the touch screen ipod, and touch screen phone with again great style and ease of use which was 2x better than the competition. Apple introduced the finger touch screen which was a leap ahead of stylus touch screen.

A headphone company Master & Dynamic copied the old classic Grado headphone's design, made it modern retro, wireless, and with high quality sound and material. Master & Dynamic slotted its brand into the luxury european headphones, into the beats by dre crowd, into the sennheiser crowd and the modern retro style.

What other tactics would you say companies other than to use the best available tech and features in their product to make it 2x better than competitors? Is the way to win as many key points as possible, and create new ones (tesla's speed was very fast, it was safer, and the new points were autopilot and long electric battery). What tactics would a company use other than this, or to expand on this?

    Is a Business Degree Recommended?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 11:18 AM PST

Hello! I am currently a physics undergraduate student but am experiencing an interest crisis. I always thought doing physics research was my passion but now I am not so sure...

I've been looking at other majors and noticed that my university has a entrenepeur/small business major. Entrepreneurship has always been something I have been interested in, in the back of my mind so I have been considering doing some intro courses for this major!

My question is, if I wanted to drop everything today and decide I will become an entrepeneur, would I even want to do this major? Is it necessary? I don't know the first thing about this field.

    Thank you.

Facebook just sent us a $100 USD Ads credit, but "fraudulently" omitted the expiry date..

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 03:58 PM PST

So long story short, last month Facebook sent us an email offering $100 USD credit in Adspend, simply if we create and publish a new campaign by October 29th, 2019. Needless to say, we were pleasantly surprised by the offer and immediately proceeded to claim it and publish a new campaign, and received a confirmation (both in Facebook manager and by email) that the Adspend coupon has been successfully applied to the ad account..

Fast forward to the end of November, when checking our billing we noticed that the $100 USD credit in fact has not been added.. So we reached out to Facebook's advertisers support directly to clarify and resolve the issue. And after sending them all the screenshots and proof of the coupon and them confirming it was applied, they decide to "come up" with an expiry date for coupon (November 5th), which was absolutely not mentioned in their email offer, list of condition, confirmation emails or even in the Ads manager after the campaign was published! There was literally no way for us to know of the so called "coupon expiration date".

We found that to be absolutely outrageous and unethical to misrepresent an offer to advertisers and later deny that same offer on a basis that was not mentioned to an advertiser, which is literally saying is the definition of "Fraud".

We are currently in the process of disputing it and are considering filling a chargeback and escalating this, as we have all the proof in the emails and screenshots. Major beware to anyone who receives any of their offers, would've have never expected such a treat from Facebook!

    Anyone had simillar experiences? Thoughts?

P.s. we will be posting all the screenshots of the offer for anyone curious and for anyone to beware of potentially being part of this Facebook's "bait and switch".

Opening in former space of a chain?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 09:24 AM PST

How do you feel about opening up in a space once occupied by a chain in the same industry? From time to time I come across spaces perfectly set up for opening another location, simply because they were once a location of a regional chain in the same industry I'm in. I usually think to myself it's a bad location. They have more resources, money, and manpower than I do. How could they fail here and I make it a success? Curious on others thoughts about this and if anyone has ever done this.

How much do I sell my recipe for?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 09:17 AM PST

Hi, I am a 20 y o F model and baker who runs a plant based blog specifically about baking.

I make all of my own delicious, vegan, and gluten free recipes— most of which are incredibly healthy.

I am writing a book and have made it my goal to get as many people trying my desserts as possible. I know my stuff is good, so I want as many people to know about it as possible. This has resulted in 2 different restaurants requesting to purchase some of my recipes (ex: one restaurant wants to purchase 2 different pastry recipes from me. I will teach their chef how to make it and, from there, they can remake it daily for an indefinite period of time. They want me to serve as an ambassador for their business as they are a trendy restaurant and having a pastry chef that is also a professional fashion model is cohesive with their establishment's branding).

I am SO excited!! But, truthfully, I have no idea how this works. How much should I charge these businesses for my recipes? I know there is not a black and white answer to this... I suppose I could charge a flat fee or take a percentage, but I'm not sure what makes more sense. Anyone who has experience or advice, I would appreciate some insight. I am young and people could try to take advantage of that, so I don't want to sell myself short.

All advice is appreciated. Thanks! Xx

Couple hundred dollars into advertising and no sales

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 07:32 AM PST

I started a business that has a niche in providing members with exclusive information that will help them increase they're chances of purchasing limited edition shoes and streetwear to sell on the secondary market. This is called a cook group. Now I know this is a very specific niche, but I have advertised through facebook, and even social media influencers and I come up with nothing. After investing a couple of hundred dollars on ads, I have seen no growth other than the traffic to my website. As a 20 year old aspiring entrepreneur, is there anything that you guys can advise me on to either getting that push, or do I have to wait for time to do its thing?

I think I have a good idea and I want to move forward in the invention process.

What are the steps you took to create a prototype? How did you find someone to make it? Any obstacles/pitfalls you ran into?

The invention would be a couple of pieces- a glass base, plastic or silicone layer on the outside, and possibly a silicone rim to hold them together.

Any insight and advice is much appreciated 😊
