Your family wont always understand, don't let that deter you.

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 03:13 PM PST

I run a marketing agency. We're doing well now.

We were not doing well for a very long time.

Family members would regularly ask me what i do, how im doing, and that i should just go work in real estate.

Nobody in my family respected me until i mentioned the revenue I'm pulling in, which again has only very recently hit a respectable number.

If you're dealing with this, don't be discouraged. Sometimes they wont get it. Sometimes risks need to be taken. Sometimes you just have to take the path less traveled. Most importantly, do your thing and be unapologetic about it.

    You've got this.

How do retailers AND distributors evaluate if an emerging brand is right for their store?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 07:28 AM PST

I am developing a solution in this space for CPG distributors and retailers, but I'm still assessing how a retail buyer or owner or distributor decides to go with a new brand that's being marketed to them.

Can anyone who has direct insight into this share me their experiences?

    Selfies in our shop?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 02:01 PM PST

    Hey team,

I am the assistant to the owner of a large candy store. We have almost 30 employees and 15,000 square feet of retail space. We spend a lot of time making the store an interesting experience. People have been taking lots of selfies in our store. At first this was fun and exciting, now people walk into our store start lying on our floors to take the perfect shot and the leave without buying anything. Because we are large it's somewhat hard to police.

Recently, a semi-large influencer came in and said we should charge for people to use our space to take photos. We are having a tough time deciding when is a selfie a photoshoot? And if anyone else has been having this issue.

    Biodegradable Single-Use Straws

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 09:17 PM PST

Considering the time that I have and what's going on in my life, I've decided to forgo the juice business until the potential future.

I've moved onto something less time intensive, and something I could start up on the side of what I currently am doing in my life - and the idea I had was biodegradable single-use straws. I thought that maybe some local small businesses would be interested in buying some better environmental options.

Of course paper straws come to mind, they're cheap and environmentally friendly. But they are god awful, they got soft in your drinks and it's not comfortable on your mouth. I've weighed some options and settled on Wheat Straws, essentially straws made from wheat.

I've heard some good things about these straws, and I've ordered a package to test them out myself and offer businesses to try them as well. I've reached out to one local eatery and they said they'd be interested in learning more about it and to reach out to them whenever we can arrange something!

With a potential lead coming up, I'm wondering if this is actually something that I can do! I'm really excited, and depending on this one lead I'm considering reaching out to other businesses to inquire as well!

My question is, if I were to want to take this on would I want to incorporate? Open a business account to keep finances separate? What other steps would I need to take on? Anything helps! Thank you very much

How does a business transfer securities to a former owner?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 11:25 PM PST

I'm exiting ownership of an LLC; my friend (and ex-business partner) is keeping the business and we are splitting half of the assets as part of the exit plan. The exit is completely amicable.

We're trying to see if we can transfer ownership of the securities to the new LLC that I'm starting. Splitting the cash was easy but we're not sure how to do this. We would like to not have to liquidate because that will trigger a taxable event. Is it possible to transfer these securities (i.e. shares in a mutual fund) without liquidation?

Recently upgraded to a thermal printer for shipping labels and we're so happy

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 10:26 PM PST

W needed to replace an ailing laser printer and decided to switch to a Rollo thermal printer. It doesn't come with wifi but we were able to set up a print server on an old raspberry pi so now we can print from any computer in the house.

Thank you to all of the Redditors who posted about getting free labels from UPS or FedEx, we got a huge box of labels and some printer cleaning cards. Considering the cost of label sheets and toner for the old machine, this thing is going to pay for itself in a few months.

The best part is that it's so fast. The old machine would easily be a minute or more between clicking print and having the label. This new one is done printing before you can even walk over to the machine.

Is it worth taking some business classes if I have management experience?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 10:11 PM PST

So right now I'm managing a high volume coffee shop for a company I don't own. As the general manager, I handle all operational needs (orders, payroll, staffing, labor, COGs, profitability, etc). I basically act as owner but without the freedom to make the big picture changes I want to make. More importantly, I want to give 110% to my store but that requires overtime or working off the clock - 2 unacceptable solutions that I've been blatantly told would get me fired. I'm tired of playing this game and want the freedom to run my business the way I want to.

I've just about paid off my student loans and am reaching a point in my life where I want to start laying the groundwork for starting my own coffee shop. I'm still so far in the beginning stages that I wouldn't even say I'm in planning mode. Right now my goal is to just save up and get my ducks in a row. I'm starting to wonder if I should take some business courses. My local community college has a small business program that covers things like basic accounting, marketing, business law, and business development. Part of me wants to take it for the knowledge it has to offer, but the other part of me is wondering if it's just going to be a repeat of everything I learned already by just going to work and running my store. Someone else suggested going for my MBA but that would mean going right back into thousands of dollars in debt and taking out more loans while community college I can pay for each week.

I know everybody has their own path to success but what's your story? Did you take courses and regret it? Do you wholeheartedly recommend it? Maybe you didn't take classes but wish you did. I'd love some advice

Any advice on Trademarking and Patenting?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 09:59 PM PST

I'm working on an app (yet to be developed) and am scared shitless about not having anything patented or trademarked before assembling a team.

Right now, I'm working on am MVP and some pitch decks. I have yet to make proper wire frames, so I'm not sure how far the parenting would get me given no software has been built yet. I have a patent lawyer on standby but I don't know what to give him if I don't have wire frames or something physical to show him.

So yeah, I'm learning. I'm new at this. I sometimes don't know what I'm doing but I'm terrified of having my ideas stolen. Any advice? Or words of comfort?

Have any of you tried being carbon neutral to attract more customers/give people an excuse to spend money? My mom was asking me and I don't have the slightest idea of if it might work. She found the following: https://www.stabilitate.com/

I lurk on Reddit regularly but am new to posting.

Should I become a business with multiple contracts?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 04:27 PM PST

Hello! It was suggested to me to post a question here instead of the personal finance sub.

I'm wondering if I should become some kind of business now that I am an independent contractor with multiple contracts.

Up until recently I had a contract with a single company to provide telephone counseling services but I'm now going to provide services for more than one company. They all know, none of them see the other contracts as a conflict of interest (they all provide somewhat different services).

My current set up is this:

-Company pays me directly based on hours spent providing counseling or a flat rate by number of counseling sessions completed.

-I pay quarterly taxes and receive 1099-MISC documents to file my yearly taxes.

Two other people I know with similar contract jobs each have an LLC. Is this something I should consider? I'm not sure where to start researching this. I'm also looking into personal liability insurance since one of the companies wants me to have my own policy (the other two cover me under their company policies) and it seems like there are different policies for individuals and companies.

Any tips on what type of business, if any, to consider for my situation would be appreciated! I've been confused by what I've read so far when it comes to filing taxes or paying myself a salary from my company (wouldn't all my income be my salary, minus whatever I spend on office/business supplies?).

For reference, I'm based in Maryland but the companies are based in CA and NY.

    Recommend me POS system.

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 07:57 PM PST

Hi everyone, I'm a small material & construction supplier owner. I'm new to this (pos system and reddit) so I need some help. Can anyone please suggest me a POS software, here's my requirement: 1. I can operate it on iPad. 2. Inventory management. 3. Sales report. 4. This is the most important. A software that allow me to handwritten the receipt before printing (using stylus pen) All products will be send to customer's home (Delivery). So I really need a software that allow me to write the address after I input their order. So, input order - handwritting address - printing.

It has to be handwritten not typed cause it'll take so much time to enter customer's info one by one (I tried few free software and the customer management thing took so much time to do) The customers usually stay for 5 mins at most :( Thank you in advance !

Can I own a house, finance the house, collect rent through a LLC in the USA? Also some questions regarding loans

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 07:02 PM PST

Can I own a house, finance the house, collect rent through a LLC in the USA? I assume the answer is yes.

Since LLC is a pass through entity, do banks care about my personal credit score when financing a house? What if I don't have a SSN since I'm not a non-US person? That means I can't finance a house? If I've been banking with a US bank for a few years, would they be open to financing a deal since they know me?

Do companies have their own credit score completely separated from the owners?

Top 4 Best Cheap Wholesale Clothing Websites

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 06:38 PM PST

In today's society, the cost of opening an online store is very low. The difficulty is how to find the right source of goods and reliable purchase channels. Only by selecting the purchase market can the quality and efficiency of purchases be improved. The reason why people are keen on online shopping is because of the low price. If you can't find the first-hand source and can't get the lowest price, what do you want to attract customers? Today we introduce 4 quality and cheap Chinese clothing websites.

    1. AliExpress

When it comes to wholesale, of course, you can't get rid of AliExpress. It is called "International Taobao" by the majority of sellers and provides free shipping to more than 200 countries and regions. All orders are delivered within 1-7 business days. Clothing and apparel belongs to one of its advantageous industries. The platform mainly supports buyers to pay by credit card (in RMB and USD), WebMoney (WM), TT remittance, Western Union, and Qiwi wallet.

    2. Quarkscm

It is known for its pioneering "pan-channel pan-supply chain" model. The intelligent lock library system pre-locks inventory according to demand and responds to shipment demand in real time within 24 hours. Although cross-border e-commerce is dominated by European and American markets, other new regions such as Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa are also growing. For unfamiliar markets, Quarkscm provides system training and operational solutions to applicants. Mainly support buyers through the payment of: Paypal, Alipay, Payoneer Account and Wire Transfer.

    3. DHgate

DHgate is the first website in China to provide B2B online trading platform for SMEs. It adopts a commission system, which is free of registration fees and is charged only after the transaction between the buyer and the seller is successful. Buyers can generate orders based on the information provided by the seller. They can choose to purchase directly in bulk, or they can choose to purchase samples in small quantities and purchase them in large quantities. After the buyer receives the payment, the two parties will settle the trade through paypal.

    4. Chinabrands

Chinabrands Chinese name is Global Huapin.com, which is a cross-border export distribution platform of Shenzhen Global E-Commerce E-Commerce Co., Ltd. Flash sales and Black Friday are the main features of their website. It is worth mentioning that swimwear is Chinabrands' strength category, the price is competitive, fashionable and rich in inventory. Mainly support buyers through the payment of: PayPal, Alipay, Payoneer, bank transfer.

If you want to wholesale Chinese clothing, I hope this article can help you.

PipeDrive is a drag... alternatives sought

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 06:38 PM PST

I've been using Pipedrive for years - I'll admit - poorly. My team and I have tried to make it do what we want, but the deal-centric nature of the platform rather than customer-centric view makes it hard to deal with. We have minimal integrations at present, so ditching it wouldn't be that impactful and we're doing very little with it anyway.

Hubspot seems easier to deal with but also gets expensive REALLY fast once you go beyond the basics. I'm looking for something that is easy to use, makes sense, and provides decent reporting.

I know that process > product, but I'm at a point where I feel lie the product just needs to be ditched. No one likes it and after a couple of years, I just need to admit that I hate it as well.

Parents bought a cafe and it's not doing as well as the previous owner claimed. How difficult will it be to sell it if they've owned it for less than a year?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 06:22 PM PST

The previous owner's claims and history showed the store did $1200 on weekdays, $1600 on weekends.

Currently, the cafe is making under $1000 on weekdays and Sundays, and $1300-1600 on Saturdays.

The store has remained the same in ingredients and recipes. My parents' CPA told them they likely can't sue for fraud because it's about a 20-30% difference, whereas they would have a better case if it was a 50% difference. Is this true?

They did not expect so much labor for this little money. The previous owner didn't say how the turnover rate with the staff is high- it is so so stressful. My parents are working 10+ hour days almost everyday with no days off. They're exhausted, physically and mentally, and want to sell now. They were told they will lose $50-100k if they sell after owning it for less than a year. Is this also true?

They've worked so hard to save their money and this feels like a very unfair situation...

Any advice or insight would be appreciated.

    How to advise my employees?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 05:42 PM PST

So I run a coffee shop. It's a small operation with only three employees. People love the coffee and the vibe of the place, but a couple of the employees have a body odour problem. They are hard workers, so I don't want to make them feel bad, but recently, a couple of my friends approached me and informed me that their body odour is a put off.

It's clear I have to do something, but how do I approach the subject, without hurting their feelings, or making them super, super self-conscious.

    TIA.
