I've been hit with an ADA lawsuit. What's next!? Posted: 04 Nov 2019 12:50 PM PST First of all I can post a pic of the letter if it helps. I have a two man LLC that sells goods online and in store (750k ARR) combined. Today I received a letter saying something along the lines of our website isn't complying with the ADA and we have to pay or be sued. This seems like extortion !? [link] [comments] |
AITA for not paying lawyer (or perhaps, am I stupid?) Posted: 04 Nov 2019 10:44 AM PST We've been having ongoing issues with our landlord (in a group tenancy situation) , and at the recommendation of a commercial real estate friend we agreed to talk to a real estate attorney. We met for about 30 minutes to discuss our circumstances. The attorney's recommendation was to get the other tenants on board, and reconvene. The tenants all got cold feet so I called the lawyer to say we aren't going to proceed. I started getting bills from the lawyer, but I've been ignoring them. He called me today to ask about payment , and I explained we never had a service agreement (I didn't even know his rates) nor did I agree to take him on as my attorney - every other lawyer I've worked with required this up front. I explained this and he more or less hung up on me. Am I misinterpreting the order of operations here? Edit words [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Nov 2019 12:47 AM PST 18 months ago I went into business with a guy I used to work with. He was fantastic at work, more senior than me and seemed to have his stuff together. He left work to go travelling around the world. Whilst he was travelling around the world I worked at the same place but did a little bit of side consultancy (in IT) and built up a few clients. When he returned he was interested in becoming partners and had enough cash to jump straight into the business. We set up the account on companies house, made a website, joint bank account and away we went. It basically started going downhill from that point. I was still working mon-fri 9-5. He was only able to work on the ltd company mon-fri 9-5. We ended up not speaking for weeks on end properly and even when I'd scheduled them in he wasn't able to fully make them due to other commitments. Now I think it's worth mentioning that he has a wife that he dedicates a lot of time to. I'm not sure of the full background of exactly how much extra support he has to give her, but his main goal is to support his wife. I then decided to have every Friday off for 3 months to move the business along. He was probably available for 2/3 of those Fridays. Over the Christmas period (from the start of Nov to Jan) he went to Barbados. Without mentioning it. I continued to go to events and worked hard with other companies. Taking days off on holiday from my other job to go and do day rate consultancy for companies. He was fully unaware of the day to day business, he can just see money in the bank climbing up. Fast forward to a month and a half ago and he's finally turned around and told me he's going to get a job. I was over the moon to be honest. I assumed that meant he was going to leave the company. However he's undecided on what to do. I keep mentioning he needs to make a decision and we need to get him off boarded as I'm trying to run a company however he doesn't seem to be keen to move at any speed on that. Fast forward to today: I've just closed a pretty decent (nothing major but first big deal for me!!!) £20K a year deal with a client. That doesn't kick in until Dec. I've worked my ass off to get this client and build up the relationship with them. Can anybody give me some advice of how to move forward? Or do I need to just burn the whole thing down and set up a new LTD company and start over? Like I've mentioned I've had the conversation with him over and over and now I'm not sure how to move forward. I'm gutted to be honest. It's also worth mentioning that I did sign an agreement at the start saying I wouldn't take any money out of the company until I left my current job. I thought that was only fair at the time because it was what he was working on full time. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Nov 2019 12:08 AM PST Hi everyone, so i am currently helping a family member in their small restaurant business in a small rural town in Washington State. That being said, they are interested in selling the business when their kids are finished with school in the next couple of years. The problem is, they are a vastly behind the times technologically. They still write out orders by hand and basically have all their sales history on paper "somewhere" but definitely not organized efficiently. My uncle is convinced that since he owns a fairly nice restaurant (building, kitchen, etc. wise) that that will be enough to encourage buyers. I know it's hard to evaluate without knowing what the restaurant looks like or the area they're in, but does anyone think that someone would buy a restaurant for these reasons alone? Also, should we be finding some accounting software to digitize sales from previous years? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Looking to setup a business bank account. What should I be looking for? (UK) Posted: 05 Nov 2019 03:53 AM PST Hi all - Looking to create a business bank account but wary of the various things for me to consider. What are the things I should be looking out for or keep in mind. I'm UK based if that makes a difference. [link] [comments] |
Is it wise to hold money in PayPal Business accounts Posted: 05 Nov 2019 03:04 AM PST I've heard horror stories about businesses getting locked out of their PayPal accounts. I specifically am using PayPal as a payment processor for invoices. Is this recommend? [link] [comments] |
Bubble wrap for shipping, buy machine or buy the pre-filled bubbles? Posted: 04 Nov 2019 08:13 PM PST Hi, I'm no bubble wrap expert but I ship 100-200 packages a year to customers. Mostly more expensive and fragile items like electronics. Currently, I have been buying bubble wrap off Amazon. But I think it might be smart to just buy a bubble wrap machine? I was hoping other business owners could chime in and let me know what they use. I was hoping to stay around the $300 range. We would need a variety of different types of bubble wrap. Whether the machine can make all of them or can make our main bubbles we can always buy the small bubbles. We would need the "tough" bubbles. I have no idea what they are called. I'm having a tough time finding them online. For example like the ones, you would wrap a wine glass in. Open to other ideas though. I think something like this would be %60 of our wrapping. Air Pillow would be %30 of our packing to fill in gaps. Then just the tiny bubbles that you pop with your finder would be %10. For smaller items. Do you buy these big rolls? Do you save money? Is it more convenient having them on hand not blown up? Links to a great machine for around $400 or less with the wrapping? I really appreciate all the opinions. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Banks that dont impose a character limit on international wire transfers. Do they exist? Posted: 04 Nov 2019 09:03 PM PST Bank of America and Chase are ones I've tried. Wells Fargo was also attempted, but they wont give me a straight answer and they say I have to go to a branch to do an international wire transfer. No. I keep having this issue where wires sometimes get denied because the address or business name of the person I'm sending to winds up being too long. Googling doesnt return any other person with this issue, which is surprising since it seems like itd be a common one. [link] [comments] |

Are there any small business owners in this sub that have built a car wash? Posted: 04 Nov 2019 06:50 PM PST How have your experiences been so far? This something I have been interested in doing for a while now, but I am trying to seek out any advice that any owner has learned over time from building the car wash to operating it. such as start up cost, how much land they needed for the business and anything else that might be important to know. I would usually ask somebody I know personally but unfortunately I do not know anybody that does own one. (Sorry if this is messy or unprofessional. I am just trying to seek out any advice that anybody is willing to give) [link] [comments] |
Location and Competition Question for Starting a New Brick and Mortar Business Posted: 04 Nov 2019 06:34 PM PST I have only done preliminary research into starting a business so far, but one really important aspect I've run across early is selecting a location and researching local competition. Part of that was about the physical locations of your competitors and finding the best relative location so you're not competing in the exact same market. I'm sure it depends a lot on what you're in business for but, for example, you should have a 10 mile or 10 minute travel time radius to your closest competitor. So, generally it would be a bad idea to open up a block away. But driving around town I seem to see this very "rule" broken in abundance. There are 2 auto parts stores within 2 blocks of each other and there is a third being built about a block away from those all on the same stretch of highway. I see competing sandwich shops occupying the same shopping center/strip mall locations. Competing grocery stores literally across the street from each other. I imagine that in some retail/service spaces they can't serve every customer in the area so there's enough business to go around to support multiple stores providing the same services or products, but the auto parts store thing really throws me. These stores literally sell all the same stuff so it can only be brand loyalty/price that sustains them. But even then it just seems weird to have them so close together. What am I missing or not understanding about the cliche' "location, location, location!" rule of figuring out where to have your business? [link] [comments] |
Where can I find embroidered hats? Posted: 04 Nov 2019 05:02 PM PST Hi all, I'm looking at purchasing some beanies and hats (not many, maybe 10-15 or less). The style of beanie would be exactly what you get from the NFL shop. For example, being a New Englander, I have several Patriots beanies. I find that the logo on the front is thick and very high quality, as is the hat (which I believe is New Era). I was curious, if I uploaded my logo to one of these several sites I find online, would it be equivalent quality and thickness or are there particular brands that are better than others? We already know the business we want to start and what will be charged for our service but the question is what business set up? There are several different one like an LLC and Corp ones like that. Also I know I need business insurance but what other things do we need to do or think about to get this off the ground. We are trying to avoid to many pitfalls for getting started. If someone has some resource that can help with mapping out the process I would appreciate it. At the same time I could be completely over thinking this and we need to go for it and deal with it all. Advice on how to deal with Negative Reviews Posted: 04 Nov 2019 01:36 PM PST So I started my own business about a year ago and overall things have been going extremely well! I just received a couple of my first bad reviews, however, and I don't think I'm handling it well. I honestly don't think the people who left me the reviews understood my product and they didn't ask me any questions, they just jumped right into a review. I write At-Home Murder Mystery Parties so it's definitely a niche market and I understand how it can be confusing to some. I responded to them appropriately and offered refunds but it's caused me a ridiculous sense of anxiety. I have 30 five star, gleaming reviews and only 2 negative ones so I know that I'm not a failure but I feel affected by it. Everytime I get a notification from my store now my heart drops and my anxiety skyrockets, it's caused me to not want to keep writing and questioning if I'm doing everything wrong. So I guess my question is, for everyone who is owns a small business that suffers from being a perfectionist or having anxiety, do you have any tips or tricks on how to deal with bad reviews? I know that I can't please everyone but I was just wondering if there was anyone here that could shed some insight/ their thought processes when going through something similar. Thank you for taking the time to read this, it feels nice to be apart of a community of other Small Business Owners. [link] [comments] |
Starting an international business with a grown company Posted: 04 Nov 2019 01:07 PM PST I'm in Mexico, and I contacted an American company that only sells their goods in the US, CA, UK, JP and Australia. However there is no way to buy their product in Mexico, and shipping from the US to Mexico is basically the same price as the product itself, so, I proposed the company to be their operation manager here in Mexico, that I can deal with their inventory, the shipment and also the customer service in Spanish, they said we can get to an agreement, however they said that if I was willing to work on a commission basis, I said I could think about it. If I do we reach an agreement I would be dealing with basically the whole operation over here, I would be dealing with the box manufacture for shipping and with the shipping company and make the deals with those companies for them, I would also be using MY space for their goods, so I would like to know if it's fair for me to work on a commission basis being that I would be doing all of that work, or if I should push for a fixed rate, and if it is a commission based payment what should be a fair percentage, being that the product sells for around $35.95-$100 dollars Thank you! Advantages of an LLC over just "going for it"? Posted: 04 Nov 2019 11:29 AM PST I've read in here a few times about the fact that starting an LLC, even as a one-person operation, can be beneficial... But how? What liability am I limiting? If its just me and the customers, what liability is there? I gather there can be some tax benefits, but what specially are they? How much of my already purchased equipment/supplies can be claimed if/when I start an LLC? I have a science background, and trying to turn woodworking into a full-time job, so a lot of the business side of things is nonsense to me so far. [link] [comments] |
Small business online-only banking Posted: 04 Nov 2019 10:57 AM PST I am in business with 2 partners that live in different parts of the country, and we want to use an online-only banking option because of that. I've seen other posts on here where people avidly recommend capital one spark, however, Spark is not currently accepting new accounts... Any other good ones out there? I like something with limited fees, but most importantly, convenience and functionality. I've heard of Axos, Ally, and Azlo, but know little about how good they are. A friend of mine also mentioned Chase even though they're a brick and mortar type bank, but because of that I'm concerned that it wouldn't be as accommodating as an online-only option. What all should I have ready before starting work as a DBA? Posted: 04 Nov 2019 10:53 AM PST My previous post was about starting up as an llc, but I think I just want to begin working as a DBA. I'm thinking that I only need the following items to get stated, but want to confirm first?
When I start earning, can I put all of the money into the business account and then just transfer funds to myself, or do I need to have an actual pay check with tax withholdings? [link] [comments] |
