    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Technicals Tuesday - Oct 01, 2019

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 01:09 AM PDT

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on technical analysis (TA), but if TA is not your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against TA here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Technical analysis (TA) uses historical price movements, real time data, indicators based on math and/or statistics, and charts; all of which help measure the trajectory of a security. TA can also be used to interpret the actions of other market participants and predict their actions.

The main benefit to TA is that everything shows up in the price (commonly known as "priced in"): All news, investor sentiment, and changes to fundamentals are reflected in a security's price.

TA can be useful on any timeframe, both short and long term.

Why not invest in top 10 US companies?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 04:51 AM PDT

What are the Pros / Cons of investing in just the top 10 US companies by Market Cap. Here's current top 10:

    1 MSFT | MicroSoft

    2 APPL | Apple

    3 AMZN | Amazon

    4 GOOG | Alphabet

    5 BRK.B | Berkshire Hathaway Inc.

    6 FB | Facebook

    7 BABA | Alibaba

    8 V | Visa

9 JPM | JP Morgan Chase & Co.

    10 JNJ | Johnson & Johnson

These make up around 22.70% percent of the S&P500.

My opinion is, not as diverse as a S&P but these are constant winners. You might miss gains but also missed losses from the little guys? Any input is appreciated

I'm thinking of investing in stocks but I'm not sure if it's for me. Can you guys answer a few questions?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 11:47 AM PDT

There's a few things about myself that I should state right away.

    • I am very poor, and will only have ~$200 to get into the market with. Will this be enough to open an account and do anything else a new person may need to do?

    • I'm not 100% sure what the different account types are so what is recommended for a personal account, that I'd like to be hands on with?

    • If I can get into stocks, what's is your recommendation for an app/platform, to trade on? I see things like "Robenhood", "E-Trade", ECT. Any help would be great.

So with the above info in mind is it feedable for me to get into stocks, and is there any beginner friendly information you may have?

Thank you very much for any response.

The main goal is to understand why these are distinguished companies in the cannabis industry, what they do, which services and products they offer, and whether their stock could grow in the future.

These two companies are two of the largest cannabis producers in the world, and they will eventually be competing to attract the most significant number of investors as possible. Read full

    Protagonist Therapeutics PTGX @ $11.82 thoughts/discussion.

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 12:49 PM PDT

Yo so this company has multiple drugs in various phases of development. The drugs are for what I would consider to be a pretty popular diagnosis especially with the rise of gluten allergies in the last couple of years. Personally I am highly considering putting a good amount ($3000 or so) of money into this company and see where it goes.

I replicated the Apple 10-K Income Summary in Excel

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 12:17 PM PDT

I thought it would be a good exercise to see if I could replicate the Income Summary page in the 2018 10-K form that Apple submits to the SEC, just using formulas from the Add-in (no hard-coded numbers).

    I wrote about it here:

    https://www.excelpricefeed.com/templates/excel-company-income-summary-10k-template

(disclaimer: I built this Add-in and thought it is would be useful for this audience).

I know nothing about stocks. I recently started a job that issued me equity shares.

    I have 15,000+ shares.

My vesting schedule is monthly over 4 years with a 1 year cliff. What does this mean?

    Thank you for your help!

Has anyone thought of looking into industrial real estate stocks in hopes that it would get acquired by Blackstone?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 09:06 AM PDT

Blackstone's been acquiring industrial portfolios left and right (Colony Capital, GLP, PIRET, Gramercy, Dream). I don't see this trend phasing out anytime soon. Anyone have any thoughts on this strategy?

$INND Great action today. Looks like Kiosks are rolling out. 200k slap earlier, and now the ask on L2 is thin. About TIME!

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 08:00 AM PDT

Been holding this for MONTHS. Finally some life. Its always risky catching a falling knife ha.

Should do good from here, now that we should be getting non stop news on all the kiosks rolling out, and FDA clearence supposely within 2019 (as per recent filing).

I hate waiting, but I honestly like this company.

Which broker has the largest inventory of stocks to short?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 07:51 AM PDT

I typically short low to lower mid cap stocks (no stock under $5 usually) and am having issues often times shorting some stocks because thinkorswim never has any available. As a result, I miss massive moves that would otherwise make me thousands per trade, and that is unacceptable. What brokers do u guys recommended that will more often than not have shares to borrow on many of the lower cap stocks?

Massachusetts Electric d/b/a National Grid Received Favorable Commission Ruling Last Night

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 07:14 AM PDT

The Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities issued an order last night approving Massachusetts Electric and Nantucket Electric proposal for rate increases over the next five years. During that time, they will have a rate increase cap of inflation + 1.72%, a favorable result. Assuming Mass Elec and Nantucket can run their business efficiently, they will be able to turn a reasonable profit in the 2020-2025 rate cycle.

Eversource Energy received a similar ruling in 2017 from the Massachusetts DPU, and since that time its stock increased in value from ~$60 to $84, a large increase in the realm of electric utility stocks. Additionally, Eversource raised its dividend to $2.14 per share, annualized, in 2019, continuing a string of 6%-7% dividend increases the past two years. (see here: https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/ES/ )

National Grid (NGG) is a more complex stock, because it consists of more companies than Massachusetts Electric and Nantucket Electric--it's a multinational utility company. (see here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Grid_plc) In addition, if input costs for electricity generation and distribution rise, this price cap may be less beneficial. However, overall, the regulatory ruling gave National Grid what they asked for, which is usually a positive sign for future earnings.

    Anyone have any thoughts?

Is there any massive risk to shorting a stock that's announced dilution in their financials

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 04:44 AM PDT

I know there's unlimited risk in shorting a stock because, in theory, a stock could go to infinity. I've been doing some research however and have found a few stocks that are going to have private placements, issue more shares to the market, etc. at a lower price that the current sp.

In every situation, whether it's share unlocks, warrants expiring, private placements, etc. doesn't the price of the stock always drop? If that's the case, why should I not go short a day or two before more dilution hits the stock? Are there any cases where more dilution can move the sp up?

Is it worth investing in hundreds of seperate stocks instead of an etf to avoid an expense ratio?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 03:03 AM PDT

I'm looking into an etf with a reasonably high expense ratio of 0.27%.

Would it be worth taking the time to separately invest in each stock listed in the etf?

FYI I'm new to all this so keep that in mind
