    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Options Trading Thursday - Oct 24, 2019

    Posted: 24 Oct 2019 01:06 AM PDT

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on stock options, but if options aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against options here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Required info to start understanding options:

    • Call option Investopedia video basically a call option allows you to buy 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to buy
    • Put option Investopedia video a put option allows you to sell 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to sell

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

Call option - Put option - Exercising an option - Strike price - ITM - OTM - ATM - Long options - Short options - Combo - Debit - Credit or Premium - Covered call - Naked - Debit call spread - Credit call spread - Strangle - Iron condor - Vertical debit spreads - Iron Fly

If you have a basic question, for example "what is delta," then google "investopedia delta" and click the investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

Investors betting against Tesla collectively lost more than $1 billion on Thursday as the company's stock headed for its best day since 2013.

"Short sellers are, as Elon Musk stated earlier in the year, 'feeling the burn,'" wrote Ihor Dusaniwsky, managing director at S3.

Some high-profile short sellers such as Greenlight founder David Einhorn and Jim Chanos have clashed with Tesla and CEO Musk in the last few years.

    Industry Sector Risk

    Posted: 24 Oct 2019 01:53 PM PDT

Hi, I'm looking at stocks in a screener and want to diversify my portfolio selection for a research project.

Are there any industry sectors that inherit high risk (apart from oil)?

Similarly, are there any industries which guarantee low risk most of the time?

Any stable (mid-risk) industry suggestions would also be highly appreciated.

I know it depends on the market, but I'm looking for some general consistency.

    Thanks!

Amazon falls 7% after-hours after earnings miss

    Posted: 24 Oct 2019 02:03 PM PDT

Amazon (AMZN) reported third quarter earnings on Thursday that missed on profit but exceeded Wall Street's revenue expectations, with sales getting a boost from Prime Day deals, the implementation of one-day shipping and a bevy of new Echo and Fire TV devices.

Yet the weak results sent the retail giant's shares, which ended trading at $1,780.78, tumbling over 7% in post-market trading.

Here were the key numbers, according to a consensus forecast from Bloomberg:

Revenue: $70 billion vs. $68.7 billion expected

GAAP earnings per share: $4.23 vs. $4.58 expected

Amazon Web Services: $9 billion vs. $9.19 billion expected

Much of the quarter's upside was driven by Amazon Prime's higher membership price tag, and the rollout of free next-day delivery announced in April — leading to a 24% boost in sales and cash flow from the comparable year-ago quarter.

At least some of Amazon's sales growth was offset by higher marketing and shipping costs. Amazon previously warned that the investment in one-day shipping was exceeding the $800 million it originally allotted for the task, and intended to spend at least as much in Q3.

It appears much of that investment will drag on fourth quarter and full-year expectations, with Amazon forecasting Q4 net sales to fall between $80.0 billion and $86.5 billion, representing 11% and 20% compared with fourth quarter 2018, subject to foreign exchange fluctuations. Operating income is expected to be between $1.2 billion and $2.9 billion, compared with $3.8 billion in fourth quarter 2018.

The forward guidance fell below what analysts at Bank of America-Merrill Lynch had forecast — helping to drive down the stock in after-hours trading.

    USA #1

    Posted: 24 Oct 2019 01:18 PM PDT

America is so awesome, it's easy to find a good paying job here, college can be cheap if you know where to look, crime is low, and best of all USA has an ever growing stock market. Consistent investing in the market can make any one rich eventually. Even if you flip burgers at McDonald's I can be rich some day, how great is that. USA really is #1. Btw I am a Chinese immigrant.

    AMZN Amazon Earnings Post

    Posted: 24 Oct 2019 09:12 AM PDT

Amazon.com, Inc. will report today after close. According to Zacks Investment Research, based on 12 analysts' forecasts, the consensus EPS forecast for the quarter is $4.46. The reported EPS for the same quarter last year was $5.75.

"AMZN typically doesn't move more than a few percent on earnings reports, but it has had more significant moves on the past. Zacks Consensus estimates illustrate an EPS of $4.46 on sales of $68.37 billion. This would represent a 22% EPS decline, but a revenue appreciation of 21%. EPS estimates have historically been overly conservative, and investors tend to anticipate large beats. EPS beats of less than 20%, over the past few years, have been associated with a negative price impact on AMZN shares."

Engine Capital calls on PDL BioPharma to consider strategic options. PDLI’s tangible book value is approximately $5.35 per share, while the Company’s stock is currently trading at $2.77 per share

    Posted: 24 Oct 2019 12:22 PM PDT

After numerous discussions, Engine Capital believe that PDLI owns a number of high-quality assets, but is currently misunderstood by the market and significantly undervalued.

They also believe there is scope to cut about $20 million out of PDLIs cost base (Market cap $315 and TTM PE 8.3)

How does the 50 and 200 day moving averages work when they crossover?

    Posted: 24 Oct 2019 07:55 AM PDT

I am trying to learn the reasoning behind why, when they cross, it signals a buy and sell situation? What is the theory behind that?

Here is an excerpt from Investopedia but no real reason behind it

"Crossovers are another way to utilize moving averages. By plotting a 200-day and 50-day moving average on your chart, a buy signal occurs when the 50-day crosses above the 200-day. A sell signal occurs when the 50-day drops below the 200-day. The time frames can be altered to suit your individual trading time frame."
