    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Options Trading Thursday - Oct 10, 2019

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 01:06 AM PDT

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on stock options, but if options aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against options here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Required info to start understanding options:

    • Call option Investopedia video basically a call option allows you to buy 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to buy
    • Put option Investopedia video a put option allows you to sell 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to sell

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

Call option - Put option - Exercising an option - Strike price - ITM - OTM - ATM - Long options - Short options - Combo - Debit - Credit or Premium - Covered call - Naked - Debit call spread - Credit call spread - Strangle - Iron condor - Vertical debit spreads - Iron Fly

If you have a basic question, for example "what is delta," then google "investopedia delta" and click the investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

Netflix will weather onslaught of new streaming services, says Goldman

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 08:11 AM PDT

    https://www.cnbc.com/2019/10/10/netflix-nflx-will-weather-streaming-threats-goldman.html

In a note to clients on Thursday, Goldman Sachs analysts say Netflix's long history of competition should help it weather the streaming wars.

Netflix investors fear the company could lose ground to the bevy of streaming services due to launch from the likes of Apple, Disney and HBO.

Netflix faces growing fears that it could lose out in the streaming wars, but Goldman Sachs said in a note to clients on Thursday that the company has fought off competition before, making it likely to weather the storm. But Goldman cut its its 12-month target price from $420 to $360 anyway, citing long-term pressures to subscriber growth and margins. The stock currently trades at $274, up more than 2% on Thursday morning.

Earnings Season Begins! Most Anticipated Earnings Releases for the week beginning October 14th, 2019

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 09:04 AM PDT

    IMPORTANT NOTICE!

Hi r/stocks! I am just putting out next week's most anticipated earnings calendar a day earlier than usual due to not being able to get around to do this tomorrow or this weekend. I really don't like to post these up any earlier than Friday's because sometimes the calendars can look a bit wonky where you might see some companies on the calendar that are actually not scheduled to report, or are reporting on another day, etc etc. but unfortunately I don't really have much of an option here...it's either putting this up now or no earnings thread at all for next week. Anyway, please do me this favor everyone and review carefully the companies that are scheduled to report on their respective days for next week. Admittedly, I did not get a chance to confirm all the companies that are on this week's calendar are actually reporting, but if you see something that doesn't look right, as far as a company that is listed up on this calendar on a particular day that isn't expected to report, please just post a little notice in this thread so that everyone is made aware of it! I'd greatly appreciate that. It's very possible that there are some company logos on this calendar that are misplaced here. FWIW, I do not create these calendars. These are coming straight from EW (Earnings Whispers). Thank you!

Here are the most notable earnings releases for the trading week beginning October 14th, 2019.

KULR Technology Provides Battery Safety Solutions For Leading Electric Aircraft Company

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 06:42 AM PDT

Electric aviation company applies KULR's proprietary technology to improve battery pack design and safety solutions.

CAMPBELL, Calif., Oct. 10, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- KULR Technology Group, Inc. (OTCQB: KULR) (the "Company" or "KULR"), a leading developer of battery safety and thermal management technologies, announced that it is testing and providing battery safety solutions for a pioneer in the design and development of electric powered aircraft for future air taxi services. The testing will provide procedures, designs, and technologies for new battery pack configurations that can effectively satisfy the safety, efficiency, and power demands of the company's vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) battery-powered aircraft.

The electric aircraft company is drawing upon KULR's technical expertise in building lightweight high-performance thermal management solutions for NASA, including the astronaut space suit, Mars 2020 rover, and Orion spacecraft. Recently, KULR announced its battery storage technologies will be used to safely ship to and store batteries aboard the International Space Station. KULR's Thermal Runaway Shield (TRS), has repeatedly shown in independent laboratory testing to prevent dangerous chain-reaction battery fires resulting from thermal runaway propagation.

"We look forward to helping our partners improve the safety and performance of their battery packs and energy systems," said Dr. Timothy Knowles, CTO of KULR. "In this particular case, the power demands for vertical take off and landing are very high, so getting the best possible balance of power, weight and safety is of great importance – autonomous air taxis, delivery drones, space craft, and unmanned military vehicles all need to get that exactly right."

    Best platform???

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 11:47 AM PDT

I started screwing around a year and a half ago using robin. I currently have around $11,000 in stocks, and I am hoping to put in extra $10,000. Just wondering if robin is a good platform or are there better platforms that I should move to. I recently heard TDameritrade is going commission free like robin. I use Bank of America, so I guess Merill Edge is an option too. I would like to know experts opinions.

    Wash Sale Question

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 05:47 AM PDT

Sorry for the noob question here but I'm wondering about wash sale rules. I get that you can't sell a stock for a loss and repurchase it within 30 days, but does the opposite count?

For example, today I buy 10 shares of XYZ which I already have a position in at a higher cost. Can I then sell some of the higher cost shares immediately at a loss and not get into wash sale?

Is there a “right” way to reduce market exposure?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 07:43 AM PDT

Sometimes when the sentiment is that there's a crash coming, I see people recommending a reduction in market exposure, or to "take profits".

What exactly does this mean, and is there a right way to do it? For example if I believe it's best to get out for a bit, do I sell everything if I'm up overall? Or sell my winners? Or cut my red trades? Or dump them all equally?

Any thoughts, especially those relevant to long term investors, are welcome.

    Opinions on Square [SQ]?

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 09:58 PM PDT

Obviously, Square had a rally that led to it being really overvalued, which is why it has crashed over the past year. However, do you think that its value is more reasonable now, and will the stock get back into growth any time soon?

    SQ vs SHOP

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 05:09 PM PDT

I've read some different articles comparing the two (i.e. https://www.fool.com/investing/2019/04/20/better-buy-shopify-vs-square.aspx) but I'm still not really sure which one is the better buy at the moment. I know that they both had HUGE run-ups in 2019 and both have fell a little bit (along with every other stock) over the summer.

Looking at Shopify, it looks like their fulfillment network is their next "big bet", whereas Square is dabbling in a bunch of different things (Square Capital, Square Cash, Square Crypto).

Which stock do you guys think has more growth? Which are you invested in and why?

How does an anxious person enter the stock market and invest?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 12:20 AM PDT

So this seems like a weird question but I'm a person who's emotional. I've always heard that if you want to make money. One of the ways is to invest in the stock market.

The way I see this type of business is like it is in the movies. A lot of yelling selling and people with papers shouting over each others. I know it's stupid image but what good educational books can i read about this matter?

Is there an educated way to buy stocks without going into selling/buying and constantly looking at charts without having panic attacks?

Is there a long term way of being in the stock market without actually getting sucked into buying/selling? Kind of buy and forget it exists.
