Fidelity Is Latest to Cut Online Trading Commissions to Zero

Fidelity Investments eliminated trading commissions on its online brokerage, matching a step some of its biggest rivals unveiled last week.

Beginning early Thursday, Fidelity stopped charging individual investors commissions on online trades of U.S. stocks, exchange-traded funds and options trades. For investment advisers, commissions will be cut to zero on Nov. 4. Fidelity's online brokerage has 21.8 million accounts.

Before Thursday's move, Fidelity charged $4.95 for online stock trades.

    Market roller coaster

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 12:48 PM PDT

Can I hear some theories on why the market is crushing it one day and getting crushed the next? Thoughts on a potential recession? Is the economy really doing well or are valuations too high? I'm a beginner investor so sorry if I sound amateur. Thanks in advance!

Stocks are usually weak in the fall of the 3rd year of a President’s term.

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 07:06 PM PDT

Even though the 3rd year of a President's term tends to be good, there is sometimes volatility in the fall because parties are sorting out who their nominee will be. There's a lot of uncertainty as there are a few options. The chart below shows that since 1950 stocks have fallen in this period (pre-election fall season).

Stocks in 3rd year of term

In the current scenario, it seems Warren and Biden are very close as the average of the recent national polls has Biden up by 0.2%. Their potential policies differ widely (Biden moderate & Warren left leaning) which could cause volatility as the market waits for clarity. It helps stocks that in presidential elections, both candidates try to appeal to independents by toning down their rhetoric.

    Which vanguard ETF to buy

I'm just starting out trading on my own. I already have a retirement plan going thru my work so I thought with some of my extra spare cash I'd try investing on my own aswell. I've been looking at these vanguard ETFs. I'm starting off with $1000 and want to continue buying more each month as a get more cash. I wasn't expecting to see so many Vanguard's show up when I searched the ticker.

The value one seems nice but I'm not sure what the difference is between them all. Thanks

I guess I should say I'm not planning to retire for about 30 more years.

    What do online brokers do?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 07:45 AM PDT

I'm seeing all these companies switching to free commissions and it makes me wonder, what is it that online brokers actually do? They don't sell you the company like they used to. I'm not educated enough to know the day to day responsibilities of them, it just seems their job is becoming outdated. Someone with more experience, feel free to explain
