Small Business Owners, What inspired you to start your own business?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 08:27 AM PDT

    Books for getting started.

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 09:44 PM PDT

I'm starting to take part on my dad's business, we delivery lunch with three employees, no big deal. I'm thinking of ways to improve our business by adding some marketing, deals, combos, etc... I only wish i knew how to not mess anything up and grow, open a real deal restaurant (we had a few of them), get more clients, make our name shine and invest on our lives.

All i'm asking is about some books that can help me to know the right way to keep improving instead of shrinking through time. Thanks!

Can you recommend a 'whiteboard' video platform to help explain a business idea? Or perhaps a better medium? Can't afford a professionally shot/edited live video.

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 04:59 PM PDT

For my company I need to do a little education around what we do. I can't afford a film production team to produce a video. I was thinking of doing a 'whiteboard' video.

Can you recommend a low cost high value tool I can use to make something on my own? Or is there a better medium you suggest?

Hi, I'm a regular community college educated guy who wants to start a pet services business. Walking/house visits. Why is it a bad idea and why will I fail?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 11:06 PM PDT

The physical aspect is not a problem. I would like to make enough money to enjoy myself and not starve.

I'm in NC so I'm shooting for a 38k profit which is about 7 customers every business day. (5 days) (21.7 days a month for my yearly calkalations)

Thank you anyone still reading this, information is very much appreciated

If I have an LLC that's treated as an S Corp tax-wise, can I dissolve it as I would any LLC in my state?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 10:05 PM PDT

I'm in AZ and these are the instructions for dissolving an LLC in AZ: https://www.northwestregisteredagent.com/dissolve-arizona-LLC.html

But I filed the docs to have my LLC treated as an S Corp a couple years ago. Does that change how the dissolvement works? Like different from the instructions in the link?

Any help would be appreciated! Looking to make this quick, easy and cheap.

    Vendor license or LLC?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 07:47 PM PDT

Can someone explain when it is necessary to get an LLC versus just a vendors license?

I'm just planning on selling products (ceramics) online and live in Ohio. I called the tax office and they said to use the business gateway center to get my vendors license BUT it won't even let me log in without an FEIN or SSN for my business.

Does anyone have recommendations about what to do next? Just tryna make sure I cover all sales tax needs and legal stuff!!

    ~Thanks in advance!~

    Hiring first employee.

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 07:58 PM PDT

    Hello !

I started a business (taxi company) a year ago and things are going great. I am getting ready to hire my first employee this coming year and expand from there. I asked an HR person how to educate myself and she mentioned to talk with the department of labor who should have the information I need.

I am also curious of what tips I can gain here as well. My payroll is done through ADP. I have spoke with ADP and they seem very knowledgeable concerning this.

I work with various agencies federal , state, and private to ensure that I am compliant to all laws etc.

Therefore: What surprises did you experience your first year of employing someone?

    Thanks!

renting an open space to sell pop up food.

    Posted: 21 Oct 2019 03:20 AM PDT

I'm looking to launch a pop up hamburger business. I've noticed a trend of pop ups using car wash spaces after 6pm since the washes generally close around that time and provide space for customers to have somewhere to sit without disrupting the street.

I have a car wash space in mind. I feel that most owners bite on offers simply because it's easy money generating towards business costs when the established business is closed. This should be smooth but I don't wanna overstep anything.

    Here are my plans:

Cook & Sell from 7pm-12AM 3 Days a Week out of the month Thurs,Friday,Saturday I need about 400-600 SQ feet max.

    Questions - - - -

how should I approach the owner? What's a reasonable offer? What should I keep in mind when approaching?

    Thanks!

    Newbie Question

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 04:40 PM PDT

Say I plan to start an ecommerce site called, for example, "blah goods". Let's say in the future, I might also want to start a different, but related site called "blah services". When forming an LLC, would it make sense to call it "blah, llc", and then file DBAs for the "goods" and "services" names, so you have one umbrella LLC?

Keep Client or Dump them? Keep person around or dump them?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 07:42 PM PDT

Client: Opened business in my town in 2018, person visited, decided to not do work there. 2019 I'm doing work there, met the client through an ad needing video work done. Person had never went back to my client until they found out we were working together.

Person was a close friend but the past 5 weeks have been filled with drama that wasn't around before. This person has continually said (even said it today), "I let you have "xxxx client"

Do I just leave the client and tell them to go "x person"? I know person won't handle their situations like I do nor will they do it for what I charge. Or do I tell the client the situation and advise them to start looking for another company to do their work?

I love doing work with this client, but the outside extra stress of someone saying they let me have a client really irritates me. Or should I just roll with it, I'm getting paid, the client loves my work.

Not sure if others have an outside viewpoint on a good move. The comments won't be my final decision, I would just rather make a good business decision instead of a bad emotional one.

How to balance turnover and profits

    Posted: 21 Oct 2019 02:52 AM PDT

How do you go about balancing the time/profit ratio with your turnover. I'm having a difficult time knowing whether to drastically lower the price to get a faster turnover, vs, keeping a higher price with a slower sell time but considerably more profit. I don't seem able to find a 'middle'.

Setup with LLC & bank account - how to from abroad?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 09:41 PM PDT

Hi guys! I'm looking into an e-commerce platform to sell online courses I've created. I've figured out that most payment methods need some sort of SSN or ITIN or EIN - or a mix of them! I'm not a USA citizen so an SSN won't be of any use since I'm not eligible.

I've found that the fastest and most efficient way to get an LLC is to go through legalzoom.com - Q1: anyone here used legalzoom to form their LLC?

Also, that will get me the EIN to open a bank account, though it seems no banks in the USA will open one without me physically being there. I can go, though that would mean time + expenses... Q2: anyone know how to open a bank account from abroad with a proper bank (not those smaller ones that seem fake)?

Q3: anyone have any experience with what I'm talking about? It's the only hurdle I've found - how to get paid through an LLC + bank account.

Everything else seems doable with tax reporting, tax payment to different states, etc... it's just getting the actual income into a bank account that I can't figure out.

PayPal is an option, though with their cray fees + also needs an SSN to access the funds from abroad... kinda stumped here...

    Practically Perfect

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 12:23 PM PDT

I want to start a small business. I want to launch a liqudator's/scratch and dent type retail store here in central Virginia. We have a population of 11,285 people with a city of 76,504 people only ten minutes south. Median household income is $40,239 with a county household income of $49,677. I believe, wholeheartedly, that this community would benefit from a retail shop that caters to reduced priced goods.

That being said, I am struggling with a business plan. I am not sure if I need a big fancy business plan since I am not looking to start a chain of stores. I want a simple storefront that runs under an LLC in order to protect my family a little. The only reasons I am even thinking of creating a business plan at all is two-fold:

    1. To get my ideas on paper (well, digital) for the sake of organizing my thoughts
    2. To use it to secure $20,000 for startup capital

It seems that all I really need is a one page business plan that lists out my goals for the first year.

Anyway, I am just starting to gather information on this venture, now, so I know I have a lot to learn. I am looking forward to the advice from r/smallbusiness. Thank you for letting me introduce myself.

Web Dev/Design agencies. What have you done over the years to increase revenue/profit and reduce costs? What extra services/sales methods/upsells/efficiencies/etc have you used that made a difference to your business.

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 12:47 PM PDT

Web dev agency owner here. Business has been around for 10+ years. We have a small but stable and skilled team.

Mostly working in non-cookie-cutter WordPress sites, small business systems using and e-commerce for SME.

We charge decent rates and the business has no trouble getting work. We also have a decent support/hosting subscription model that generates a base income level for this business and is gradually growing.

What I'm wondering is if you have been in a similar position and have found extra sales channels or tools which have added to you revenue/profitability? Can be anything from a change in support model to a new bolt service or a 3 monthly client chaser or whatever.

How to determine the right amount to spend on advertising?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2019 12:37 AM PDT

I know that advertising as a % of sales varies by industry, by size and by stage (established vs startup).

Have you found any resources that show how much companies spend on advertising?

    Facebook Ad Agency Website

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 08:43 PM PDT

    Hello Redditors,

I am a college student trying to start up a Facebook Ad Agency and I want to create a website that directs potential clients to a monthly service scheduling system. I want it to be simple to navigate like a landing page, but still have enough substance to look professional, creative, and credible. What kind of functions should my website have in order to accomplish these criteria?

I hope you like the website

    Posted: 21 Oct 2019 02:27 AM PDT

    Hi,

    What's the problem I faced?

One day when I'm looking for the product to buy I observe with every product research a new tab is open for every new eCommerce store whether it's on amazon, aliexpress, eBay or any other eCommerce store & one more reason to build this website is with every new eCommerce store lots of marketing we have to do like running facebook ads, google ads...bla..bla to increase store sales, so I get an idea of BeWise (One-stop destination for all your online needs) then I started working on this project so here it is hope you like it.

Let me introduce what is BeWise?

In today's fast-paced world, every day a new product and a new online store is launching. But, with such huge advancements coming up, it is also becoming difficult for us to explore this online world and finally make the right choice. At this very point, BeWise comes to your rescue by creating a platform where all the store/product owners no matter they amazon seller, eBay seller, aliexpress seller, anyone can submit their store products link directly at one destination for free of cost.

This, in turn, makes the lives of all the shopaholics easy as now they can explore, and buy online products with just a few clicks from any eCommerce store around the world.

revenue share with third party partner

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 04:24 PM PDT

I'm exploring an opportunity to partner with a healthcare provider. They provide the medical staff and handle billing. Our customers need more medical staff. The healthcare provider handles the billing so they collect the money. The risk to them is they must cover their staffs salary and may not recover the cost in billable services (maybe its a slow day). We collect a booking fee from the customer.

So my question is what this the best way to do revenue share? We want to collect on the billing as well. Also, because revenue share depends on healthcare reimbursements and the provider does this in house, how would I know what our take is?

How do you make sure everything is legal, or a solid financial decision?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 07:29 AM PDT

Do you have protocols when you make a new product it has to go through your lawyers to makes sure its not infringing on trademarks and patents, and you check with your accountant how to go about things financially? How do you craft the checklist you do when you make a decision?

    E-commerce Store for Dog Obessives

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 03:27 PM PDT

Hey Reddit SB Owners & SB consultants.

I started my own business beginning of August, I'm leaving my job at the beginning of November, I'm getting super serious about my business, I've had a couple of orders but I need to grow my community and sell more so I don't have to go back to work. I sell online and at events, I'm also thinking of visiting a couple of car boot sales to see if there's an audience there. If there's anywhere else you feel I could be tracking down my audience please share 🙏

I'm looking for some feedback on 🌟 My Website (www.shoplokislounge.co.uk) 🌟 Product Portfolio 🌟 Social Media Accounts Facebook/Twitter/Instagram (@shoplokislounge)

I also intend to dog events in our area and sell my products, I'll be attending my first this Sunday.

    Any other feedback/ideas appreciated.

TL;DR where to find dog obsessives to promote my e-commerce store, need feedback on website and social media accounts www.shoplokislounge.co.uk @shoplokislounge any other ideas appreciated.

internship program within a small business

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 08:48 PM PDT

Does anyone run an internship program within their small business?

Im probably going to be taking over our families small fabrication and manufacturing business in the next couple of years, we currently make bugger all. Partly because my parents were looking at winding it down for retirement. Currently it's just myself and my dad out of a small workshop at we try and wind back up to get more work etc.

Anyway around our area places doing internships required to pass degrees are becoming very sparse. In some industries there's 3 companies taking 6 engineering interns of a certain GPA.

I'm thinking of when I take over the company offering 1 or 2 unpaid internships, no limit of GPA because I don't believe they show someone's true ability. I'd like to set it up that they'd have the ability to select a project maybe from a list or something they bring to the table and can manage it themselves within the company. I don't want to take advantage of people, especially because i don't think I could afford to pay even minimum wage (currently I'm not taking a wage).

Can I get some feedback on this idea?
