Excel basics videos geared toward accountants- For all my fellow new hires that are about to start

These videos are just simple excel stuff but geared toward accountants and I found them helpful refreshers, mainly the keyboard shortcuts and Vlookup stuff. It's nothing complicated but if you're like me and have just been studying for the CPA for the past few months/haven't worked in excel in awhile, these were awesome. I thought I would share for all of the other people who may be getting ready to start their jobs!

Is it true that Big 4 accountants work nearly the same hours as investment bankers?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 09:46 PM PDT

There is a lot of comment regarding the brutal hours in audit in public accounting with the Big 4, especially during busy season. I spoke with an alumn who transitioned from audit at the Big 4 to investment banking. She said the hours were very comparable. I thought this was very surprising because bankers work 80-100 hours/week normally.

Is it true that Big 4 accountants also work 80-100 hour weeks or is that only during busy season?

What earnings limit am I putting myself at if I decide to never get a CPA?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 02:52 PM PDT

I am a Junior in College pursuing my BSBA in Accounting. I have wanted to do Accounting every since I was 10 years old. Grade A student in high school but a B+ student in college because I am an average test taker. I am not interested in public accounting due to the very long hours consistently during the busy season for not much more pay in the short term, and taking the CPA seems impossible without being a great test taker. Where I see myself when I get out of college with my 4 year is to get a regular 45-55k accounting job while also doing a MBA program part-time for 3 years. After that, I can decide what I want to do next. Some of those options could include starting my own business, moving up the ladder at a private company, or moving over seas. Am I limiting my earnings potential by not wanting to take the CPA, and what are your thoughts on my potential career paths? I am also looking for some advice. My passion is to travel. I am 21 and have been to 26 countries with 6 more being added in December and January. I value a job that allows me to travel for work and travel on my own time with my vacation time. I would rather these attributes in a job than a job that pays 30k-40k more. I want honest answers to my questions. Thanks! 😀

    Why do you stay?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 12:38 PM PDT

I'm curious about why people stay in their positions? This could be public or private. I'm in public and given the work I do my background isn't well suited to going into private, so I'm sort of stuck.

I'm not happy at my firm and I could go to another firm and probably make a lot more money. For me, the major factor making me stay is the devil you know is better than the one you don't. At this firm, I know the politics at work. Do I really want to have to learn all that stuff again at a new firm?

Those of you who are unhappy in your positions and are not actively looking for a new position, why are you staying?

risk advisory "consulting" recruiters need to stop selling themselves as management consulting-lite to unwitting college students

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 04:40 PM PDT

This applies to IT audit, internal audit, SOX compliance work, etc. Obviously these are all respectable, viable, and potentially lucrative career paths for people, but B4 and national firms need to be honest about what the work entails

College students have no idea what internal controls testing is, they just see the vague "value-added consulting" part and assume its a prestigious step up from tax/audit. then when they leave for exit opps wonder why all their industry jobs are calling them "internal auditors"

like I said, risk advisory, internal audit/IT audit are all great career paths for people who know exactly what the work entails, but overplaying the "consultant" aspect is something that I think just adds confusion to the mix when some college students still don't understand the difference between tax and audit

    Dividents question.

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 07:07 PM PDT

    Hi

I am an Incorporated truck driver in Canada and doing my own bookkeeping. I have been paying myself as employee but its too much taxes (30%) so I decided to pay myself Dividents from now on but have few questions.

-Do i need to remit the corporation Income tax portion everytime I pay myself? Or pay all income tax at end of year?

-My corporation fiscal year ends in June so how would personal taxes work out? I mean i won't get T4.

-I spoke to an Accountant she told me to just take whatever I want and will do all paperwork at end of year and calculate tax. sounds inconsiderate?

    Thanks in advance for help.
