For those of y'all who came into accounting from an unrelated field, what was your path?

Increase in commute time and responsibility

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 09:19 PM PDT

Currently have pretty cushy assistant controller type job that I am hoping to ride out to early retirement in 6-8 years. Total comp about 170K. Have an opportunity for CFO type tole that would obviously be more stressful as I would be the main finance person and also a 40 minute commute in good weather (likely an hour with any kind of snow) from my current 10 minute one. What kind of total comp would you guys be asking for? Personally I am thinking 220k base as I don't trust variable bonus type things (they will always overpromise). After tax that is another couple thousand $ per month which makes it worth it I think

    Redemption

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 03:22 PM PDT

So I got this huge project to handle at my job. It was to transfer a lot of expenses and hours that had been put on the wrong account. Well I've only been doing this job for 5 months, and this is different than the other training/daily work I do. Long story short I messed it up royally. It can be fixed. But it took a lot of GL work to get it right.

What can I do to help redeem myself in my bosses/managers eyes? I've been upfront, willing to help fix things, not shying away from anything but I want to start building up job security again. Any ideas on how to make myself look better in their eyes - besides just not messing up again?

    PwC Tech Academy

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 04:29 PM PDT

I got invited to the PwC Tech Academy which only runs for 1 day and it happens to be in another state (in Australia). I graduated 3 months ago and I'm currently working full-time so I'll have to take a day out to fly there and back just to attend it.

Has anyone been? What did you do there? Is it worth it? Will that open opportunities later for you to work there as a graduate? Is there anything I need to prepare for?

I haven't found much information on the Tech Academy online so any thoughts on the PwC's Tech Academy is welcomed, thank you!

The Morning Brew is a great way to get business news every morning for your commute

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 04:28 PM PDT

Hello everyone, I wanted to share with everyone a free subscription I've been enjoying over the last few months that is delivered Monday-Friday to your email before the markets open around 5-6 am central time.

It's called The Morning Brew and it summarizes the big financial topics of the morning in short easy to read sections that you can read over a cup of brew.

I wouldn't say this is essential for Economics but it's nice to read if you are wanting to stay up to date on the financial markets as they will write about companies and stocks to look out for. It's also not spammy or filled with ads though there are one or two sections clearly listed as "sponsored" that you can skip over. They don't typically put out a weekend read so you shouldn't be getting any emails Saturday or Sunday.

If you are interested, you can sign up at this link here: https://www.morningbrew.com/daily/r/?kid=4a3c44

Work at a Big 4 - Feel like I’m getting yelled at for stupid shit

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 10:15 PM PDT

So I just got back home from 3 weeks of traveling to client locations and just nonstop vouch grinding. It was just me and my in-charge, and I just started working about a month and a half ago.

The first day I worked with him, I was making really stupid mistakes, incorrectly inputting the wrong values on some selections (birthdate, hire date, etc). He tells me to slow down and make sure I get everything done right the first time, which is completely understandable, so I started to slow down and put more focus on each testwork, and I could tell I was improving.

That first week, I improved quite a bit, and he started to trust me and give me more responsibilities. I was vouching about 50 selections a day, writing notes and following up with the client by myself, figuring out super confusing retro-pays, etc. But every now and then, I would maybe miss a tickmark on one selection, or forget to write a note on something for follow-up. Any time he catches those mistakes, he would blow up and grill me really hard - saying how I'm going too fast on the selections and how he can't trust me to do the job right, etc.

from working with him, I could tell thT he has a bit of a temper, but I didn't want to start any conflict, because I really just wanted to get my shit done and not have to waste time bickering.

But today he really pissed me off, because he found that I missed a follow-up questionon a testwork and he already sent the questions to the client. Of course I got the same lecture - going too fast, he can't trust me... In my head, I'm thinking, even if I made the mistake, isn't it YOUR job to review my work and catch those mistakes? Why would you send the follow-up questions in without reviewing the work? Not only that, he even had me review some of his work and I immediately found 3 or 4 mistakes on his follow-up questions and tickmarks. So the fact that he's getting mad at me for this when he does the same shit just made me even more pissed.

What I'm most worried about is when reviews come, because even though I worked super hard and made sure to make as little mistakes as possible, it seems like he will base my entire performance on those little mistakes. The worst part is, the day I made the mistakes, I was burnt out from writing follow-up questions for over 80 selections. He tells me to slow down all the time, but then also tells me he expects those follow ups to be completed on that day, so I don't know how he expected me to do a perfect fucking job.
