If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or other "advice for my personal situation" questions. If you are going to ask how to invest you should include relevant information, such as the following:

    • How old are you?
    • Are you employed/making income? How much?
    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive significant other?
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?
    • Any big debts?
    • Any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

    Fund recommendations on Vanguard

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 11:32 AM PDT

Hello r/investing, I recently opened a Vanguard account and have about 60K transferred to this account. I was hoping to get some fund recommendations in Vanguard. I looked at the options but I was a little overwhelmed.

I already have 401K account that I have planned towards retirement. I also have a betterment General Investing account for 2 years but the return aren't great (~2%).

So, I'm looking for short term investing options with Vanguard. Any advice is appreciated.

    Thanks!

Are there any tax advantaged accounts I'm missing?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 12:37 PM PDT

Currently I max out my IRA, 401k, HSA, and contribute the maximum amount to my 529 that my state lets me deduct.

Are there any other tax shelters I'm missing?

Should I max out my Roth IRA now or continue to slowly invest over the rest of the year?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 03:33 PM PDT

I am looking for advice on what to do with my Roth IRA. So far I have invested $3200 in my roth IRA for the year, leaving me with $2800 until I hit the max. Up until now, I have just slowly been contributing anywhere from $300-500 a month with the plan of hitting the $6k max in December. I have enough money in my savings account that I could invest the $2800 all at once and still have a comfortable 6 month emergency fund, or I could continue to slowly contribute over the course of the year until I hit the max. Will one option make a huge difference over the other? Need advice on how to continue. If it makes any difference, I have a 70/20/10 VTI/VEU/BND allocation.

Tracking changes in Annual Reports / 10Ks

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 04:06 AM PDT

Does anyone have any good resources for tracking changes in company filings? E.g. would be interesting to see when companies add new risk sections or change specific disclosure wording, or add notes on new liabilities etc. Oftentimes managements bury important things in deep in the notes, to cover their a** whilst minimizing the amount of attention drawn to the amendment.

I remember there used to be a website which tracked these changes for large companies, but I haven't been able to find it. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks!

    Vietnam bonds

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 10:18 PM PDT

I'm currently living in Vietnam and plan to do so for the next few years.

Vin group bonds are offering about 9%. Vin group is essentially state owned so should be about as secure a bond as you will find here. Plus the bonds are guaranteed by the bank.

Other than currency exchange, is there any other considerations I should be looking at? Inflation is down around 4% but more importantly the US exchange rate has been relatively stable over the last year - in fact the VND has strengthened a bit.

The bank withholds about 5% for taxes.

Any reason not to invest in this?

    S&P 500 ETF's

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 07:06 PM PDT

I'm interested to learn what Reddits opinion regarding the 500 ETF's are given the current market & political wheels at motion.

The trade war with China, TSLA & the labor laws verdict, Facebook & the antitrust etc.

We've seen a bullish market as of late (sans this past week), and some analysts speculate were setting ourselves up for another recession. The FED raised the interest rate earlier this year & now recently lowered it by a quarter point.

What are your thoughts in regards to the S&P 500 indexes & ETF's weathering the political termoil/news & continuing to show gains in 2020?

    Over funding a Roth IRA

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 10:20 PM PDT

If on Jan 1 I fund a Roth IRA to it's limit and then remove any over funding before filing taxes the subsequent year, do I get to keep any gains that I might have gained during that year? Or do I need to figure out how to withdraw them as regular income?

    edit:
    Just to put numbers...
    Jan 1 - Deposit $5000
Dec 31 - Interest of $500 earned (pretending 10% gains)
Jan 1 - Realize the limit based on income is $1000, Withdraw the $4000
Do I need to withdraw the $400 as income or can it remain in the rIRA?

How to rebalance a portfolio of 20-30 stocks

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 02:36 PM PDT

For those investing in a portfolio of individual stocks, how do rebalance your port, how often, and what is the best way of doing it? Normally I use equal weighting in a port of 20-30 stocks.

If for example you have certain stocks that have gained alot but you think they have more momentum, do you still trim them to rebalance because of their portfolio weight having become too big because of their recent overperformance?

Aside from your preferred method, are there any "rules" about this that should work for most?

Open an endowment policy/endowment insurance abroad?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 10:24 AM PDT

I am based out of Sweden, and we have a pretty favorable "kapitalförsäkring " and " investerarsparkonto" that results in almost 0% tax on gains.

Issue is that the brokers in Sweden aren't as nisched on trading and don't offer a large universe of asset-classes, unlike Interactive Brokers.

So I am seeking a similar foreign endowment policy/endowment insurance that could be used and then trade on Interactive Brokers.

    Any suggestions?

    Why not 529?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 11:34 AM PDT

I have my retirement in order so now I'm looking to save more and retire early if possible. My dream is to retire early and go back to academic research and being a forever student. I have my bachelor's but decided to work then go back after retiring since research doesn't pay the bills. Although who knows if future me decides on something else, but this is what I've wanted so far. I'm in California and would prefer to live and study here too later on.

I'm looking at 529 as an investment account with the added benefit of paying for future education expenses tax free. Is that the case? Would penalties work out to be the same as a normal investment account should I decide later on that I don't want to go back to academics?

    Anyone try “worthy”

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 08:04 AM PDT

Saw an advertisement for an investment app called "worthy". The premise is that you buy bonds at $10 a piece with 5% interest. There was something mentioned as well as daily payouts (which I find hard to believe). Any thoughts? Also like many of the other apps they have a refer a friend program.

Oil stocks set for big gains?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 04:14 PM PDT

With rising tensions between Houthis/Iran and Saudi Arabia oil prices should see a spike this week. However, I'm concerned that because American media outlets aren't reporting as they should on this I could be wrong. Here are some things that should be a big deal but haven't been in the mainstream news.

Houthis have reportedly defeated/captured 20% of Saudi Arabia's brigades. (Pending confirmation, but BBC and Washington Post are the only outlets that have reported this and is almost non existent on main stream news.)

Saudi Arabia warns Iran "patience is not limitless and is running out".

Iran states it is ready and prepared for an imminent physical/cyber attack on its oil infrastructure.

When you add in the news that has been widely reported oil should be set for a big week despite supply gluts.

    What do you guys think?

    Am i wasting my money?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 08:47 PM PDT

I have a couple grand in robinhood, stocks and bonds ( Jnk, banking and misc). I am a little worried about a downturn so I bought a xlf put expiring 12/31. I guess I'm assuming at some point in the next three months there will be a dip and I will sell it for a profit. Should I have just sold my stocks, not bought the put, or is it a valid strategy?

If everyone and their mothers invest in index funds, how can the rule of supply and demand still apply?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 04:57 PM PDT

I guess my question is will we see larger inefficiency in the market because of fewer investors actively trading a stock to drive its price closer to its real value?

    KDDIY vs. NTDOY

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 07:08 PM PDT

    Hi all!

I currently have both Nintendo and Tencent in my portfolio, but would like to move one (likely Nintendo) due to it being in the same sector. I am looking to adding KDDY in its place. Unfortunately, I do not see much information on it - the information I do see is from years back.

    Should I stick with Nintendo?

Does anyone practice the 70/30 theory when investing in funds?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 02:32 PM PDT

70% equity funds / 30% Bond/Dividend Funds. If so, how is it working out? And is there any other theories and/or practices that would work better?

    Thanks!
