I overcame my fears Monday and quit my job. Posted: 27 Aug 2019 02:19 PM PDT I'm starting my painting business after painting for 2 years, I quit Monday; printed an estimate sheet and some business cards. Today i went house to house in a neighborhood not to far from where I live and out of 20 houses I got one lead. I started at 9 am not sure if that might have been why. Is there any advice people on this sub can give me that are into the same profession? I'm mainly using this business as a financial stepping stone. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Does anyone have advice for running your business when you just want to give up on everything Posted: 27 Aug 2019 06:59 AM PDT I'm looking to get the motivation to reply to clients and start getting back into my work but I've just been sitting in front of my laptop doing nothing. Posted: 28 Aug 2019 03:38 AM PDT I was made redundant eight months ago, and have been struggling to find another job in my field. So I decided to do something about it, by starting a business with a laser cutter, a CNC cutter and a 3D printer operating from my garage. The CNC arrived today and is about to be assembled. The laser is due any day now. The printer I've had a few weeks. So I've outlayed a bunch of $$ and have yet to get any back- but I expect to in a few weeks. I'm on the cusp. It won't be my usual salary (above average but nothing stellar) but it could be the start of something good although it will take a while to be a significant source of income. I had given up looking for work as I was sick of it all. But tonight as I was contemplating assembling the CNC, I got a call from a recruiter asking if I was still looking for work. I said Kind Of. So I have an interview with them tomorrow but I'm in two minds about whole thing. Do I ditch Plan B self employment for a Plan A job or hold my nerves and go solo? I know that I can work full time and run the business at night and weekends with a view to quitting once I have my production earning a steady income, but tbh a new job, family life and all that would mean I wouldn't be able to give the venture the attention it needs and I think it will be a a languishing project. So do I turn down the recruiter, or play along to see what it's about, or go whole hog to try and get a job back in my normal field? [link] [comments] |
Business's Lease is up for renewal and I need help on what to look out for.. Help! (Texas) Posted: 28 Aug 2019 01:14 AM PDT For context, I am a relatively young business owner (<30) that bought the business from the old owners who have retired. I assumed their old lease which was a NNN 5+5 option it is due for a renewal within a week. I have been asking the landlord for months (literally since March) about the renewal contract and to see if I would be able to review it. He kept giving me a runaround about how it wasn't ready yet but that it would be ready soon, and I wasn't able to pursue more aggressively due to concerns about my good standing with him and a lot of renovations for the business that kept me preoccupied. This is totally my fault, and I acknowledge it, but my concerns and anxiety are growing as the deadline to renew approaches. Since I don't have any other leases to compare with in the area, I don't know what standards or terms I should look out for in case he does decide to structure the lease as favorably as possible for himself. Also, I don't know and was wondering if there is a cap to how much he can jump the rent rate between renewals. I think he mentioned that I should be expecting around a 10% hike (huge) due to increases in property tax which I can't verify. Rent is my biggest recurring expense especially since the business is 3000+ sq ft. and every percent is a huge chunk of my profits eaten. I am wondering whether to bluff stepping away if the contract is too predatory. If anyone in the Austin area who is a business owner is willing to share the terms of their commercial lease or have knowledge of what to look out for, please DM me and I'd be happy to at least buy lunch and connect. I also heard of real estate agents who specialize in these and review them for a fee. If you know any, please contact me as well. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Facebook ads tutorial recommendation? Posted: 28 Aug 2019 01:10 AM PDT I have made a couple of ads now, so I understand at the basic level. Is there a tutorial or something that you recommend to learn how to build facebooks/Instagram ads? [link] [comments] |
Best custom cardboard box supplier? Posted: 27 Aug 2019 09:02 PM PDT Good evening r/smallbusiness! I have hit a very trivial roadblock that I was not quite expecting to hit. It's a very minor one but after days of research I still have yet to find a solution that works for me. I'm in the research phase of starting my second business, and I'm looking for custom cardboard box solutions. When I refer to custom, I'm referring to like a designed box with a company logo on it. There are a lot of company's that will offer that service, but all of the dimensions for boxes they sell will not work for me. I'm looking for boxes that will fit a computer in, as I am starting a computer/tech company. Who do you all use for shipping boxes or know of that will deal with custom dimensions like that while still offering the custom box designs. Best Regards! [link] [comments] |
Do i need a degree to start a business? Posted: 27 Aug 2019 08:38 PM PDT I really want to start a business, most likely a clothing store or something in that ballpark. Would i need to go get a business degree or can i just get information on what i need to do online? [link] [comments] |
Creating a procedure for decision making? Posted: 27 Aug 2019 06:48 PM PDT If I am in the process of developing a product or develop a marketing campaign or any decision making thing, how would I create a procedure for making a structured decision like a big business would? i.e if I was to develop a new product should it go through the company overall strategy, then through accounting, then looking at how it is with other products, and looking at how to design/innovation? How to put together a standard of what happens during a new product development, or new design, and so on? [link] [comments] |
Business Benchmarks/Key Performance indicators Posted: 27 Aug 2019 05:10 PM PDT Can anyone point me in the right direction? I am looking for business benchmarks/key performance indicators for service based businesses. Specifically tree service/arboriculture. For example, your production payroll should be around 30% of gross receipts (with your total payroll costs being 33-35% of gross). [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Aug 2019 08:07 AM PDT Thanks for any and all advice. Your time and thoughts will be much appreciated. We are small architectural design firm in Canada. We have been incorporated for 11 years and have tried a few different directions but in the last few years have settled as designers, project managers for a percentage fee and sometimes we will act as the builder. I think a big failing for us is that my partner and I are 50-50 partners. On the plus side, we are still friends who trust each other and no one has stolen or acted inappropriately. On the negative side I feel like neither of us is really taking imitative or is able or willing to push for growth. After 11 years we have just one employee and we just seem complacent with what comes our way. If this continues we will not have anything valuable to sell or transition to employees when we want to retire in 20 years. What I would really like to do is find a business mediator to evaluate our differences and issues and help us/force us to define clear roles and responsibilities and make us accountable. I would also like to find some way to develop a plan and strategy that we can agree on and implement. We have just become way too complacent. If we don't change, resentment will build and I may be tempted to leave or sell my half of the company. Perhaps this is the best decision for me long term anyways but I would like to invest in other options 1st to be sure. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Surprise lien on newly purchased business assets Posted: 27 Aug 2019 11:20 AM PDT We had just purchased a small daycare from some acquaintances of in July. Today our onsite manager just received a call from a lawyer looking for the former owners. The lawyer explained that the former owners had liens against the assets of the business. These liens had not been disclosed to us at any point during the purchase or negotiations. We did not purchase the LLC, just the assets from the LLC that belongs to the former owners. Unfortunately, most of the furnishings and equipment were worn out and in extremely poor condition and have since been discarded. What is the next step moving forward? The lawyer wants me to contact them. Does our business really have to worry about this lien? Can I invite them in to repossess the assets they claim are secured by this lien? [link] [comments] |

Saving a plumbing business, any advice? Posted: 27 Aug 2019 08:37 AM PDT I believe I'm about to be involved in a rescue mission on a small family plumbing business. The issues are mostly on the admin side (invoicing, dispatch, accounting, inventory, advertising, etc) but also include lots of employee drama. As far as I can tell from a distance operationally the plumbers themselves (expertise and licenses, etc) are ok. I've got business expertise but not plumbing specific expertise. Do you have any specific suggestions for things to look out for, plumbing business checklists, common trouble spots, business books or even software? For the last they have no computerized dispatch, scheduling or estimating systems at all which seems a huge hole. I'd particularly like to hear of any good reference material for (re)starting a plumbing business. [link] [comments] |

Not sure how to handle issue with my Business Partner Posted: 27 Aug 2019 07:41 AM PDT I'm starting a product based business with my one friend. I'm also looking to start a brewery. But brewing is something I enjoy as a hobby right now and am just starting to look into what is needed to start one. My friend is aware of this. We were talking about ideas for our joint business (product based) and he started talking about "our brewery" and what we could do with it. And basically included it as part of the product based business. And that he wanted in/assumed he was already a part of it. I told him no it wasn't part of the product business and he's not in yet. It's something that I'm doing on the side as a hobby right now and if I were going to do something with it, it would be a venture between and my other friend who I brew with. I went on to say that when and IF I start looking for people to bring on it, that he would be on the short list. He went on kind of defensively and asking if I'm trying to screw him out of a market. And started bringing up IP about what we do now and acting differently then he has been in the past year. I'm not trying to screw him over. He doesn't participate in any of the brewing we've done up to this point and it has nothing to do with the product based business we are working on already. There are also several other reasons why I don't want to involve the one business with the other. So in my mind they are two separate things and there is nothing wrong with me starting a brewery separate of the product business. Has anyone else experienced this? And if so, what was the outcome? Posted: 27 Aug 2019 01:30 PM PDT Hi guys, I'm wondering what you do with various flags in background checks. For context, I run a tutoring company, so my contractors work with kids in their homes. Obviously, this means that if any sort of sexual offense regarding a minor came up, it would be a hard and fast no. Until today, nothing worse than a speeding ticket came up. I'm looking at a candidate now with underage drinking, marijuana, and domestic violence (one incident) on record. His record is clean for the last few years, and I think he's probably a different guy now than he was when he was 20. I don't want a couple of mistakes when he was younger to destroy his chances of working for me. On the other hand, when I think about it from a parent's perspective, that list might make me nervous. Wondering what experiences people here have had with this. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Aug 2019 01:11 PM PDT I got a nasty surprise last week when I tried to submit some routine maintenance filings on the USPTO website - apparently as a foreign company we are unable to do this ourselves anymore. As of August 2019 any foreign company doing so must be represented by a licensed US attorney. So now, after soliciting some rates from firms, it seems what used to cost $120 and take 5 minutes of time will now cost thousands of dollars and require many more hands touching it. Has anyone been dealing with this? Are there any firms out there offering to handle simple routine filings for less than 4 figures? [link] [comments] |
Buying a small business- finding a broker Posted: 27 Aug 2019 04:30 PM PDT What is a good way to find a broker? Is a site like bizbuysell a legit way or are their listings not real? [link] [comments] |
When starting up there is information required that I am unable to obtain without that information Posted: 27 Aug 2019 12:29 PM PDT So I'm opening up a retail store soon and there are so many walls. Like when filling out forms on the Secretary of State site it's asking me about my current employees. Well I haven't been able to open yet because I have to fill out this first before I can open my business. Also my lease agreement for where I'm going to open my store requires we have the documents from the Secretary of State. But the Secretary of State requires an address on where I am operating out of. I'm in Louisiana and I was wondering if anyone could help me clear this up. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Aug 2019 11:49 AM PDT I'm very interested in starting my own bakery, but don't really know where to start. I've applied for culinary school recently, and know that eventually I'll need an EIN through the IRS, but that's about it. I live in central Texas(fort hood/Killeen/Austin area) and plan on staying here if that helps. [link] [comments] |
Question about creating your own business for subcontract work (alarm industry, Alabama) Posted: 27 Aug 2019 10:41 AM PDT Hello! This is a bit industry-specific, so I hope someone is here who can help. I currently work as a W2 contract employee for a national major security/alarm/smart home company, and am considering making my own business and moving to entirely subcontract work. Why not make all the money for myself (and headache lol) instead of for another company? My questions are: 1) I assume I need general liability insurance. I assume a policy for general contractors is what I'm looking for? 2) I am state licensed in alarm, CCTV and access control but the license is attached to the company I work for. Do I have this license transferred to my business once it exists? 3) What other legal requirements, if any, do I need to pay attention to? Any help, or direction towards resources, would be appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Aug 2019 10:32 AM PDT Hello reddit, I was curious if I can receive some advice for our current situation. My mother runs a family law firm and is dealing with an awful client who will not pay her bill, had a minor falling out, and has been constantly leaving negative reviews for the past few days. What's the best possible way to combat these? They're causing my mother an unnecessary amount of stress that she already has to deal with on top of that and I'm trying my best to help her as much as I can. Thanks and much love <3 [link] [comments] |
Best reference books on small business ownership? Posted: 27 Aug 2019 06:44 AM PDT 23F here - one year out of school and at the start of my career. I'm in the fitness industry and hope to one day open my own studio, and am trying to read up as much as I can about small business ownership. I'm in the "make mistakes on other people's money" phase of my career right now, so I want to read as much as I can now to better plan for this very, very very long-term goal. [link] [comments] |
