    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Fundamentals Friday Jul 12, 2019

    Posted: 12 Jul 2019 01:07 AM PDT

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on fundamentals, but if fundamentals aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against fundamentals here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Most fundamentals are updated every 3 months due to the fact that corporations release earnings reports every quarter, so traders are always speculating at what those earnings will say, and investors may change the size of their holdings based on those reports. Expect a lot of volatility around earnings, but it usually doesn't matter if you're holding long term, but keep in mind the importance of earnings reports because a trend of declining earnings or a decline in some other fundamental will drive the stock down over the long term as well.

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

    Market Cap - Shares Outstanding - Volume - Dividend - EPS - P/E Ratio - EPS Q/Q - PEG - Sales Q/Q - Return on Assets (ROA) - Return on Equity (ROE) - BETA - SMA - quarterly earnings

If you have a basic question, for example "what is EBITDA," then google "investopedia EBITDA" and click the Investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

Airbus about to pass Boeing to become world's largest aircraft maker

    Posted: 12 Jul 2019 06:43 AM PDT

    https://edition.cnn.com/2019/07/11/business/airbus-boeing/index.html

Boeing has bested Airbus as the world's largest aircraft maker for most of this decade. That's about to change in dramatic fashion.

Airbus has already delivered 150 more jets than Boeing through the first six months of the year: Airbus is winning 389 to 239, according to sales figures reported this week. Airbus' commanding lead is especially significant because the race between the two companies has historically been tight. Last year, for example, Boeing delivered 806 aircraft last year to Airbus' 800. 2015 was the only year this decade in which one of the two airplane manufacturers delivered 100 more planes than the other. The gap between them is almost certainly going to get wider. Boeing has not been able to deliver any of its bestselling 737 Max planes since March, when those jets were grounded. That month, one of the jets crashed in Ethiopia and killed all 157 people on board. It was the second fatal crash of a 737 Max in less than six months. In total, 346 people died aboard the two planes. Boeing probably won't get approval to fly the 737 Max again until the end of 2019 at the earliest — much later than what was initially expected.Boeing and Airbus dominate the commercial aircraft market, and both companies have a backlog of thousands of jets that will keep them busy making planes for years to come. That has kept new orders modest for both companies, even before the 737 Max grounding.Investors view deliveries as a more important metric of success than orders. Airlines don't pay most of the price of a new jet until it is delivered, meaning that the aircraft makers' revenue, profits and cash flow depend upon deliveries.

The good news for both companies is that the demand for air travel, and new fuel-efficient planes, is growing. That means both are building and delivering planes at a much faster pace than in the past. In 2011, the last time that Boeing was behind Airbus in plane deliveries, Boeing's deliveries stood at 477, Airbus at 536.

Boeing has continued to build the 737 Max, though at a reduced rate. Boeing will probably have about 400 of the jets completed but undelivered by the end of the year. The huge supply of completed 737 Max jets at the end of this year likely will allow Boeing to move back into the lead in deliveries in 2020.

I bought Boeing at $351 and I am long on it. What are your opinions on these 2 eternal rivals?

If you were forced to sell everything you have and create a portfolio split evenly between 5 stocks for the next 5 years, what would you pick?

20% of your porfolio for each stock.

No mutual funds/ETFs/Index funds, just individual companies

Facebook fined $5 billion for privacy violations

    Posted: 12 Jul 2019 01:56 PM PDT

    LAUREN JOSEPH; AARON BERNSTEIN/REUTERS

AFTER MONTHS OF negotiations, the Federal Trade Commission fined Facebook a record-setting $5 billion on Friday for privacy violations, according to multiple reports. The penalty comes after an investigation that lasted over a year, and marks the largest in the agency's history by an order of magnitude. If approved by the Justice Department's civil division, it will also the first substantive punishment for Facebook in the US, where the tech industry has gone largely unregulated. But Washington has taken a harsher stance toward Silicon Valley lately, and Friday's announcement marks its most aggressive action yet to curb its privacy overreaches

    $UUUU just tanked

    Posted: 12 Jul 2019 01:31 PM PDT

So I happened to sell some Energy Fuels puts at 2.5$ strike. Which is kinda awesome because I can now get back into it.

But what the hell happened? Just simple politic shenanigans?

I remain bullish on the stock but that came quite surprising to be honest.

I'm trying to purchase several shares of OTGLF. No order is being filled even when I ask at a higher price ($59) than last current.

The price of it hasn't changed from 57.30 in a few weeks it seems.

Am I missing something? I'm new to investing.

    How do futures work?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2019 02:07 PM PDT

How do futures (Pre-Market Data) such as changes in the Dow Jones mini, S&P 500 mini, etc. help us determine the market's path throughout the day? Is there generally a better time to check futures to foresee how the market will act?

Is there free financial report information across time?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2019 01:59 PM PDT

I am looking into creatinine some models for different companies and found myself looking through multiple sec filings across different dates to see look at how the companies change year over year.

I was wondering if there exists free resources with compiled income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow tables by quarter or year so that we could see the changes over time without having to check each document/do it ourselves.

    Relatively safe mid-term investment?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2019 01:36 PM PDT

    Hey lads,

I have 1k dollars sitting at the bank atm and I want to do something productive with them. I'm not currently in the US so I opened an account with a broker in Argentina and the commissions to trade in Wall Street are pretty high (minimum of 12USD per transaction). This applies for both ETFs and stocks. Because of this, I don't plan to trade often, but to divide the 1k on 2 or 3 stocks/ETFs. I am currently employed but I might or might not need the money over the course of the next 5 years (in case of an emergency, say). I'd like to split my portfolio between as many stocks as possible but I really can't because of the huge rates. Should I put all my eggs in one basket? And in that case, which basket do you guys recommend? (Risk tolerance: low to moderate).

    Thanks in advance!

    Lets Talk Trash

    Posted: 12 Jul 2019 07:02 AM PDT

Currently, countries are already starting to see the effects of increasing waste. Many countries that accept imported waste are starting to refuse this waste as it is becoming expensive to process, environmentally unsafe, and they are running out of room/water. A lot of these concerns are listed in this article.

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2019-07-11/how-the-world-can-solve-its-2-billion-ton-trash-problem

This article also goes into current solutions such as burning, sorting, cleaning waste, and new/more efficient ways of processing and re-using recycled waste. So I just want to open a discussion about what companies will benefit the most from this large increase in waste over the next decade.

    Currently, there are stocks like:

    Waste Management and Services

WM - Waste Management - is an American waste management, comprehensive waste, and environmental services company in North America (largest in NA)

RSG - Republic Services - provides non-hazardous solid waste collection, transfer, recycling, and disposal services for commercial, industrial, municipal, and residential customers in the United States

ABM - ABM Industries - provides integrated facility solutions services in the United States and internationally.

WCN - Waste Connections - an integrated municipal solid waste (MSW) services company, provides solid waste collection, transfer, disposal, and recycling services primarily in the United States.

These are just companies that directly handle and manage waste. There are other companies that are solving problems by creating bio-plastics, producing energy from waste, optical sorting of waste, and aerobic/anaerobic digestion with enzymes.

What companies do you know of that are a part of this industry?

Why are Lithium ETFs and mining related stocks not rallying?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2019 09:21 AM PDT

The output production of lithium-ion batteries is set to increase exponentially in the next few years as multiple Gigafactory size production facilities begin to come online around the world. If production is increasing and the demand for Lithium is rising, what is causing the Lithium and mining stocks to continue to stagnate? Is there too much Lithium in the open market right now? Are the economies of scale offered by the mega factories putting price pressure on the final product?

    Thanks

    BMY and the industry?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2019 07:50 AM PDT

This drug makers are getting torched, I'm considering entering BMY by selling a put, but part of me wants to avoid this sector as it seems to be under attack by our gov from both sides, god forbid a dem is elected these companies might be slaughtered even more. Trump also going after them as well.

BMY on paper seems like a sold hold with nice dividend and growth potential but is it a bad decision to mess with this sector right here?
