Fundraising Thursdays - A Forum to Ask About Fundraising, Investors, Accelerators, and Other Sources of Capital

    Posted: 04 Jul 2019 06:06 AM PDT

Welcome to this week's Fundraising Thursdays Thread.

Ask about anything related to fundraising, investors, accelerators, grants, and other sources of capital.

That includes how to find these sources, how to work with them, and how to negotiate with them.

Don't be shy. The purpose of this is to learn and share ideas and methodologies with one another.

Any question is a good question!

If you are answering questions, remember to be kind and supportive. Many are just starting out and have no idea what they are doing. That's okay! We all knew nothing before we knew something.

You can also find more support using instant chat on the /r/startups discord.

Would it be weird to invest in my own seed round?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2019 03:36 PM PDT

We're two co-founders, 50/50 split on common shares right now. 1.5 years in. Technology startup (software).

We're putting together an angel round right now where we hope to raise around $800K via 1x participating preferred shares at a $3.3 million pre-valuation. All amounts in USD.

I'm thinking of also participating in this round for $50K. Assuming my co-founder does not want to join me in this, to keep things balanced between us I would request that my shares in this round be non-voting, whereas every other participant in the round would receive voting shares.

Is this a normal thing to do? Or is it weird? I already own (on paper) $1.66 MM of this company! I also just happen to have $50K lying around and I can't think of a better investment opportunity right now, and it would help the company.

With Utopia you can send instant text and voice messages, transfer files, create group chats and channels, news feeds and conduct a private discussion. A channel can be geotagged using integrated uMaps, which simplifies Utopia channel search and adds an additional security layer. As a result, there is no need to use public map services, which are known to collect your data to feed Big Data massives.

    Posted: 05 Jul 2019 12:59 AM PDT

Today, especially in Tech companies an office has been transformed to an organizational space where people not only perform work but can also experience playfulness, creativity, sense of togetherness and joy. The physical environment of the office reflects our company structure, approach to values and can be both beautiful and functional. Properly designed, it can facilitate employees' behaviors which build our company culture and help us to attract and retain top talents. The US Workplace Survey by Gensler shows that poor workplace design costs U.S. businesses an estimated $330 billion in lost productivity each year.

What is the easiest way to start a merchant account provider? Info on first steps and costs involved needed

    Posted: 04 Jul 2019 11:13 AM PDT

    Hi,

We are a startup from Pakistan that deals with payments (currently non-card related). The financial landscape here is still in the prehistoric era, with not even a single payment processor that puts developers first (well-documented API, smooth onboarding, easy to implement and integrate, efficient refund, fraud and risk management). Most use legacy systems that are buggy with little to no attention paid to user experience.

To put this into perspective, Pakistan has a population of 200 million with approximately 30 million card users. The predominant mode of payment is cash on delivery. The startup culture has recently grown roots, and we are seeing some exciting startups that have the potential to become unicorns.

Under these circumstances, a reliable payment processor is absolutely essential. We are currently gathering information about starting a developer-centric payment facilitation service such as Stripe. I have read several articles on this topic and have made the following deductions/inferences:

    1. You need an acquiring partner bank to start payment facilitation. This is extremely difficult in Pakistan, but I am open to opinions that involve more rigorous negotiations with the banks here, or opting for one overseas
    2. There are different models to achieve my objective. (a) The PSP/ISO model where the company takes care of the whole operation of payment processing EXCEPT merchant funding, which is done by the acquiring bank. (b) The payment aggregator model, where the company provides merchant accounts under the same super Id. This model also involves merchant funding by the company. (c) The payment facilitation (payfac) model that does the above, but under different sub-merchant ids.
    3. PCI compliance is a major deal breaker. I have no idea about this part so any info will be appreciated.

What we are looking for ideally is the payfac model, but we can start small and then grow from there. Any definite advice on how to begin the process will be highly appreciated. Cost estimates are also needed.

I have $150,000 but can't find the right developers

    Posted: 04 Jul 2019 11:10 AM PDT

The title is clickbaity but it's true and I appreciate you're help. Our start-up has $100,000+ dedicated developing our MVP. We are 30% funded to our full goal of $500,000.

We're looking for developers to help us create a desktop, mobile version and iOS version of our idea. We've reached to a large devhouse to help develop the idea. After 2 phone calls and 2 team meetings and 2 months, we still don't have a price or a timeline.

We also have quotes from international devhouses but can't seem to find the right fit. So my question is, what can I do to find the right developers? We have prototypes made, wireframes, branding, and much much more complete.

Are we just not meeting the right developers or should I be more patient with our local devious? What can I do to meet the right developers who are either in house or in devhouse? *

Edit: Our total budget for the MVP is $350,000+. We need quotes from desired developers to show budget viability to our investors. We have money now, but of what we have, only $150,000 will be dedicated to MVP until we get more.

How do I execute my Idea? Please guide me.

    Posted: 04 Jul 2019 09:11 AM PDT

Hello Everyone, I'm a Software Engineering student in India. I have been working on constructing an Idea which I think is unique and useful.

It's basically a software which will help both the organizations and their customers who "buy" my software.

I have explained my idea to multiple people (from tech and non-tech backgrounds) and they have liked it.

I have good programming experience and I've asked my friend to be part of the development and he has agreed for the same . I believe we both can build the whole software in a couple of months.

What are the steps I should take to turn this into a business ? How should I start "selling" this software? Should I blind email my potential clients about the software ?

    Thanks in advance.
