US stock futures trim gains after big ADP jobs report miss

    Posted: 05 Jun 2019 06:16 AM PDT

    https://www.cnbc.com/2019/06/05/job-growth-screeches-to-near-halt-in-mayprivate-payrolls-up-just-27k.html

U.S. stock index futures gave back some of their gains on Wednesday after the release of much weaker-than-expected jobs data.

Dow Jones Industrial Average futures traded 63 points higher, indicating a gain of 72 points at the open. Dow futures pointed to a gain of more than 170 points earlier. S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures also trimmed gains.

Private payrolls increased by just 27,000 in May, according to data from ADP and Moody's Analytics. Economists polled by Dow Jones expected an increase of 173,00 jobs. May's print was the worst since March 2010.

Treasury yields fell on the news. The benchmark 10-year yield traded at 2.09% while the 2-year rate hit its lowest level since December 2017.

The weak data added to the concerns that the economy was slowing while the U.S. takes a tough stance on trade with key partners like China and Mexico.

This is a surprise and not in a good way.

Tesla’s outpacing its electric car competitors, with May demand for Model 3 surprising Wall Street

    Posted: 05 Jun 2019 01:34 PM PDT

    https://www.cnbc.com/2019/06/05/tesla-outpacing-ev-competitors-as-may-demand-surprises-analysts.html

The month of May saw Tesla continue "to extend its lead vs. a still-small group of true [electric vehicle] competitors," Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas wrote in a note to investors.

Morgan Stanley noted that Tesla's estimated total U.S. sales of 11,300 vehicles in May was 2.6 times the combined total of its competitors' electric vehicle offerings.

"More Model 3s were registered in April and May than during all of the first quarter," JMP Securities says.

Uber, Lyft IPOs Means Fewer Rider Promotions (Stock analysis)

    Posted: 04 Jun 2019 05:10 PM PDT

Uber shares gained after the stock market closed on Friday. The shares gained 70 cents, or 1.76%, to $40.50 in early trading on the New York Stock Exchange. The company sees long-term profitability in autonomous vehicles.

Lyft shares increased more than 5% on Friday, gaining more than $800 million in value. The market cap is now $16.8 billion compared to Uber's $67 billion. Just like Uber, Lyft has incurred large losses thanks to consistent promotions. Lyft reported an adjusted per-share loss of $9.02.

"While there is no guarantee that this will last, we believe that over the next 12 months both will focus more on competing via service innovations (micro mobility, loyalty etc), which should provide a significant tailwind to Uber's unit economics," Atlantic Equities analysts wrote in a note Friday, upgrading its rating on Uber from neutral to overweight.

Now that both ride-sharing services are public, riders can expect fewer deals. But, if price point becomes a determining factor for riders, then Uber likely has the advantage, since Lyft is a quarter of the size of Uber.

Should I incorporate commissions into my TP/SL?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2019 01:06 PM PDT

    Hey all,

Lately my strategy has been providing decent returns, but commissions on my trades has been eating away at my profits. Is it a good idea to account for the money lost to commissions when setting when to take profit or to have a stop loss? The idea I had to do this was as follows.

Say my broker has a 2% commission on trades, which means that they will essentially take 4% of my profits per trade.

Lets say I am buying 50 shares of XYZ which is currently at $10 and want to make $5/share (or 5*50 = $250). With no fees, I would take profit at $15. However, commissions would take 50*10*0.02 = 20 dollars from this trade, so I would really only be making $230/$4.60 per share and lose out on 8% of my "ideal" gain ((230-250)/250).

If I want to include the loss of commissions, I would instead place my take profit at $15.40 and also place my stop loss $0.40 higher than what my strategy would suggest. This would give me the desired $5/share.

    Is this a good adjustment?

How likely is it that the MSCI EAFE will outperform the S&P 500?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2019 10:52 AM PDT

Forgive the possibly newbie question. I'm wondering under what circumstances this might occur. I'm debating whether or not to stop putting money into US ETF's and start investing it into foreign markets through ETF's like IEFA due to all the "end of bull cycle" and tariff stuff, but I'm also thinking about long term growth opportunities and how much bigger US blue chips can get. I only invest long term (years to decades).

Trading Options - But not YOLOing

    Posted: 05 Jun 2019 10:41 AM PDT

I was reading on some forums about buying a long term call if you're going to hold the stock long term anyways. Potentially, this minimizes risk trading options while maximizing profits, if you plan on holding the stock long term regardless. If the stock goes down, I would have lost the money anyways because i would have held.

The stocks I'm holding I don't plan on selling, even during our next recession, maybe 5+ years, as I believe in the companies long term.

Is what I've read true (sorry no source)? I don't plan on trading options the way 95% of people lose their money do. I've always just held, and sold years later, and have done well this way. But is this a way to increase my profits while holding anyways?

Can anyone help me make sense of what I think I've read?

They lease grow facilities and are a REIT. The rent goes up 4.5% a year so there is some growth. Anyone else interested in solid support businesses for MJ?

Question: How useful is the Relative Strength Index?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2019 10:31 AM PDT

I kind new to this, but have been reading a lot.

    Main question:
... assuming I follow advise and start off by solely investing in reasonable stocks (indices etc) what is statistically a more profitable strategy (both long term, 3y+)....

    1. Buy slow and never sell
    2. Follow stock RSI and only buy when oversold, then sell when overbought, rinse repeat?

I'm assuming the answer is, as always, "if it were that simple we'd all be millionaires..."

Looking at Making First Covered Call

    Posted: 04 Jun 2019 10:36 PM PDT

I've started to save up a small sum of cash, and have heard that covered calls are a good way of making money in the stock market. I think the only real questions I have are what should I be looking for in a stock before making a covered call? Does it need to be an expensive stock, or does a penny stock with a high volume work? How risky are covered calls? Are there stocks known to have lots of covered calls for them?
