    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Options Trading Thursday - Jun 06, 2019

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 01:06 AM PDT

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on stock options, but if options aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against options here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Required info to start understanding options:

    • Call option Investopedia video basically a call option allows you to buy 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to buy
    • Put option Investopedia video a put option allows you to sell 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to sell

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

Call option - Put option - Exercising an option - Strike price - ITM - OTM - ATM - Long options - Short options - Combo - Debit - Credit or Premium - Covered call - Naked - Debit call spread - Credit call spread - Strangle - Iron condor - Vertical debit spreads - Iron Fly

If you have a basic question, for example "what is delta," then google "investopedia delta" and click the investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

[Dividend stocks] Covered call vs Diversification

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 07:28 AM PDT

I follow a dividend growth strategy and I would like to sell covered calls on stocks I own. I don't want my shares to get called away so I will be selling calls 1 week out and one standard deviation away from the current price. The premium isn't huge but it seems to be are very safe and steady strategy, especially with dividend blue chips which don't move a lot. I tried it with MSFT on a paper trading acount and that was an easy $20 every week (+dividends).

The issue is that I don't have a lot of capital and being required to own 100 shares of each company is a huge problem for diversification.

Example: with $20.000 I can maybe own 100 shares of only 2-3 company while with no min. share requirement I could hold 40 different companies and be much more diversified

Which strategy do you think is the best ?

Thoughts on Nintendo? ($44.59 A Share)

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 09:29 AM PDT

Nintendo has received a lot of buzz lately. They have their deal with Tencent to sell their Switch console in China. And they have two big title games coming out this year: Super Mario Maker 2 (June), and Pokemon Sword/Shield (November). Any thoughts on this company?

    Thoughts on ATVI?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 10:09 AM PDT

Just wondering what people's thoughts on ATVI (Activision) are. I have my thoughts about their games (stale, repetitive) but wanted to hear opinions from people that might not be as emotionally invested into video games

New to the market and one of my stocks is under sec filings. What now???

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 12:13 PM PDT

    source of sec filing

My boyfriend loves gambling and I've pushed him into using an app to buy stocks instead of lottery. At this point we are still using it as you put money in and expect to lose it all, as we learn.

That's the key though, I want to learn. I want to know what we're doing before we look at this as a true investment.

So we bought Iconix at 1.05 and it's been going down. Not enough to worry about but the article I (tried) to link above had some things stating about SEC filings. Can anyone tell me what's going on and what it means for shareholders?

Ps if you can recommend any good starter books, I'll take those too!

    Realty Income (O)

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 12:13 PM PDT

Realty Income just hit a 52 week high at a price of 72.57$.

I've had my eyes on this stock for a while because it shows great growth, always beats earning expectations and pays a really nice monthly dividend.

Do you think it's too late to buy it right now (maybe it's overvalued), or should I go for it?

My goal: Building a really great dividend investing portfolio but with stocks that can grow overtime, not just pay high, consistent dividends.

Five Below reported earnings with a beat and raise. The TTM PE of 44 is not cheap until you remember that management plan to triple store count.

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 11:40 AM PDT

The store count, earnings and revenues should triple in 5 or so years with annual growth of 20%+

This is not a recommendation to buy or sell. Stocks are not suitable for every one. Please do your own research.

    Growing account via index funds.

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 01:32 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

So I'm starting with a small account, and I've put a small % of my account into an index fund. Its going well so far. However, I'm unsure what would be the most effective way to trade this to grow my account quickly.

I've been thinking, I get charged for overnight funding by my broker every day, even on weekends, so I was thinking of holding something like 2 shares Monday to Friday, closing on Friday avoid the overnight funding tax without any potential profits. Then the next week, purchase 4 shares or more for the next week, Monday - Friday, and so forth and so forth, so each week I'm increasing my account by more.

Do you guys think this is effective? is their anything else you would recommend? I should mention that I don't really like the idea of holding 2 shares for months and closing 2 shares for like $400, when I could close it in a week, buy more shares the next week, and instead of making $400 in a month, it could be $400 in a week.

    A.I. in trading stocks

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 12:49 PM PDT

If all these massive Hedge Funds use A.I to make all their trades and figure out good entry and exit points, why has no one thought of exposing such technology to the public?

Do you think technology like this will ever fall into the hands of the common folk? Will we be able to one day use an application that accurately detects patterns and allows someone who may be new to the market to make solid money trading? What do you guys think?

Any Financial Statement guru’s? How would you organize/chart data to compare.

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 12:32 PM PDT

I'm trying to create a platform that allows someone to visually understand a company's financial statements (more for comparing quarter to quarter).

Anyone spend a lot of time reading financial statements (mostly balance sheets, cash flow statements, and income statements). Would like to ask you a couple questions about what do you like to see in terms of data and also how you compare normally quarter to quarter.

Also, what metrics/ratios do you like to look when comparing different companies vs each other.

    Any insight would be great.

People say 90% of traders lose money, is there any source of this?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 11:51 AM PDT

I've always been interested in stocks, but as a student I don't have the budget yet.

Currently I'm trying to learn as much as I can about trading for when I do have the budget, but I often read that 90% of traders lose money. You can find a lot of bullshit on the internet especially in the category of trading, does anyone have a link to a source (a poll) that (dis)proves this statement? I can only find opinions...

Dividend stocks to hold in a bear market

    Hi All,

I am looking for companies that tend to hold steady in market value in a bear market that pay between a 3-5% Div yield. So far the only companies that stand out to me are $PM and $MO.

I would appreciate any stock recommendations for me to look into.
