    Investing Education for Beginners

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 02:28 PM PDT

Hey Mods. I was told by one of you that educational material for this forum was encouraged.

I see a lot of investors "trading" individual stocks, before they invest in themselves. Before you start throwing money into individual stocks, put some money in a 401k or a Roth IRA and put it into a low cost index fund.

This video sums up a great approach to investing and why to do it yourself and not hire a financial advisor. There are a lot of great free resources available to do it yourself.

Why Google has more to fear from antitrust regulators than Apple or Facebook

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 06:11 PM PDT

    https://finance.yahoo.com/news/google-antitrust-regulation-165844292.html

The U.S. government has indicated that it's stepping up its antitrust scrutiny of America's biggest tech giants — but Google parent Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) may have the most to fear from regulators.

Earlier this week, multiple reports emerged that the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission had divvied up responsibility for handling investigations of big tech — with the DOJ taking on potential probes into Google and Apple (AAPL) and the FTC agreeing to handle any matters related to Facebook (FB), Amazon (AMZN). Congress is also launching a bipartisan investigation into competition in digital markets.

The coming Fed rate cuts probably aren't good for banks.

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 06:22 PM PDT

The quarterly GDP estimates of 1.7% growth in Q2 might seem terrible, but the Fed's long run estimate for yearly GDP growth is only 1.9%. That explains why in its Beige Book the Fed stated economic growth from April through mid-May was "modest." Investors comparing this quarter to last year would think it's weak. The Fed said growth in economic activity had a "slight improvement." The firms surveyed by the Fed mentioned their uncertainty about the trade war.

The Fed is widely expected to cut rates twice this year which is bad for the banks. The chart below details the effect a 75 basis point interest cut would have on the major banks' 2020 EPS estimates. The only positive scenario for banks would be if the Fed cuts rates quickly, preventing a recession. This occurred when the Fed proactively cut rates in 1995.
