Long time lurker w/ 400K student loans

    Posted: 09 Jun 2019 11:08 AM PDT

I suppose you can call me a highly specialized physician.

1st person in family to go to college, had to use loans for undergrad and med school

I have 400k in direct loans currently.

I am in PSLF program and have 7 years of qualified payments made. (confirmed annually)

At this point I need to re-certify my IBR, but by doing this my payments jump to almost 5k/month

If I don't, the standard payment is ~3300.

I have 36 months of payments left before I am PSLF eligible, but if they aren't under the "IBR" label, will they still count as a qualifying payment?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Edit: Thanks for all the replies, it does seem that I have to stay on IBR (which was the only program available for me in 2011). I could have switched to one of the other IDR programs prior to my salary going up, but now I don't think I can. It does seem that my IBR won't be more then the standard 10 year despite what the calculator on the studentloan.gov website says. We will see. Thanks for the input :-)

I was too sick to finish my masters according to the school, who forced me to leave bc my ada covered disability was unprofessional. Is there like a special cases situation or could this be disqualifying status?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2019 06:31 PM PDT

To work in the field I was going into you need at least a masters degree but I now have an unfinished masters in something super specialized that won't transfer to any other field.

The school said I was too sick to continue and lots of other outrageous stuff and I filed a discrimination case bc they are known for that treatment and it's messed up but it is what it is I guess. Needless to say I'm not going back there because why would they accept me back after I filed a case against them and I'm not trying to return and get shit on for being sick. The only other schools that offer the same degree are on the other side of the country. Even if I do get into those-which I can't- my other credits wouldn't transfer because it's not the same classes.

So I can't get the degree and can't work in that field without it but I still have two years worth of loans.

I'm too young for this to be considered a permanent disability (it's been over 4 years though), it was just enough to stop me from getting the rest of the degree. The closest options I've found are false loan certifications, but this doesn't fully fit any of those descriptions. There's obviously a lot more to the story but I think this covers enough. Any suggestions?

My graduate student loans are in default, and it is placing my son (recently graduated) at a disadvantage for college assistance.

    Posted: 09 Jun 2019 03:28 PM PDT

Any help is appreciated. My son just graduated, in the top 5% of his class at a progressive private high school. We missed some deadlines for scholarships so, for at least the first year of undergrad, will need to rely on loans to offset the gap between his academic scholarships and all-inclusive expenses for a state university.

We are in a weird position where my late father's estate paid for his schooling, and nothing else. We live paycheck to paycheck, literally, but have been overconfident that his excellent education would lead to amazing college opportunities. This has not panned out, and I am heartbroken for my son.

I am currently in default on my own student loans, so we do not qualify for Parent Plus loans to help. What options do we have?

Please be kind. I want the best for my son, as he has incredible (!) potential. Thank you, in advance.

    Salliemae or Other?

    Posted: 10 Jun 2019 12:41 AM PDT

Hi so I was curious if it would be better to continue taking out student loans with sallie mae or if another option would be better. I only owe 25k rn and I'd have to take out 30k this year so I just wanna know what would be a good option, or if anyone has any good suggestions on other places to take out student loans. THANKS!

Does Paying on Student Loans Help Build Credit?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2019 08:33 PM PDT

I am going to have to take out 13,000 in private student loans this year. What are the best options for private loans?

Paying off loans til I'm 51

    Posted: 09 Jun 2019 02:29 PM PDT

I'm currently on the graduated payment plan. But I don't make enough money, plus my parents are asking me to pay $450/mo. to pay the parent plus loans. So I want to change to graduated extended plan. I calculated when I'll pay all of my student loans off, and I'll be 51 when I do so. I'll of course pay ahead if I can afford it and finish paying it earlier. Should I change my plan to graduated extended?

I'm a 2nd year high school teacher, btw. I will be making about 36k take-home income. I definitely won't buy an expensive car, and idk if I can even buy a house. Is being debt free even possible at my income level? I owe 33k under my name, and I owe 60k to my parents. My parents have payed off their parent plus loans with a house they sold, and I'm just paying them back personally.

How do I get a private student loan? Taise my credit score? Get full-time job? Not sure

    Posted: 09 Jun 2019 11:18 PM PDT

So im 33 and decided to go back to school last year. I started off going to school full-time but then decided to go part time (bills all went up and federal loans cant cover everything) and get a job.

I sm going to join the military after I get my college degree, so I will have the means to pay back the loans but my problem GETTING the loans. Nobody wants to loan money to me bc my credit score is 520. I have been working for about 1-2 weeks at a temp job on and off for a job agency so thats not really a job history.

Parents cant cosign for any loans so Im on my own with this one.

I would like to borrow enough to pay for tuition and books ($10,000/yr) and enough to pay all my bills and maybe a tutor. So in total I guess I will borrow about $50,000/yr.

    My major is engineering.

So is this doable? If yes, how?

    Scotland Universities free to study?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2019 01:47 PM PDT

I'm a UK resident living in London, in my 20s.

I have a friend who is living in Italy from Poland originally. He (21) is going to study in Scotland in September and isn't paying any tuition fees for their degree, just accommodation fees. The accommodation fees are also covered if he achieves a certain mark level.

From my understanding being English & not native Scottish I'm unable to get a similar support level?

    Missed student loan payments.

    Posted: 09 Jun 2019 07:46 AM PDT

Long story short. I thought my account was still in deferment but it wasn't so I have 11 missed payments on my student loans. And they have drastically killed my credit score. I have emailed, called, and wrote letters to nelnet but they wont help me out. My question is if I pay off the loans any chance will those miss payments get off my credit report?

Does your debt ever feel overbearing, or that you’ll never pay it off?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2019 04:11 PM PDT

I graduated culinary school 4 years ago, relying on student loans exclusively to cover them. I still owe $10k, my mom's parent plus loan is at 24k, I'm trying to help her pay it because she's still taking care of my 3 siblings, one of whom is going to college this fall. Her income driven repayment plan puts it at $0/ month, and I try to put about $100 towards it every month but the interest just keeps accruing. In addition to all of that, my partner and I had to buy a new car last August, and we still owe $12k on that. I still owe about $2k in credit card debt as well.

I make $47k a year as a sous chef, which is pretty good for the industry I'm in, but I've been spending the past 4 years trying to pay all this off and it feels like I've barely made a dent. I know 4 years isn't very long, and I know I can't expect all my loans and debt to disappear overnight, but sometimes the numbers feel so ominous that I wish they would.

I'm not in a financially bad place. I'm happy with my job, my home, and I'm not living paycheck to paycheck. My credit score is good, and I've never made a late payment on any of my accounts. Stressing out about this shouldn't even be an issue for me, really. I'm not really looking for answers for anything in particular, I guess I just want to know if anyone feels the same way.

Law school scammed me, now owing loans?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2019 03:44 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I was a prospective law student seeking a school that was suited best for me. After looking at multiple law schools, I found a particular law school that stuck out to me. I called the admissions to get information. Long story short, but me and my father spoke to the admissions and after asking him questions point-by-point and getting responses from him, I decided that I would pursue this school. This law school is ABROAD of where I lived, so I had to rely on this admission's statements that the school would provide me with what he had TOLD me and my father over the phone.

Upon finally moving and attending the law school, I noticed everything that the admissions staff member told me was a LIE. I was so distraught. Towards the end of the semester, I withdrew myself. I emailed the dean of the school about the promises and statements that the admissions staff PROMISED me and the dean has yet to reply back after a week.

Not only this, but the admission staff that made these promises and statements is NO LONGER WORKING AT THE SCHOOL. He got fired!

I am so distraught. Now I owe over $20,000 in loans all because this doofus lied to me and my father.

Is there some sort of way I can contact my student loans provider and dispute this student loan that the school took? Please is there something I can do to somehow reverse this? This school is the ultimate scam operation.

Can I travel for a weekend using my student loans?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2019 07:10 AM PDT

Ok I know that traveling with student loans is about the stupidest things you can do. I just need a mental break and the trip I want to do is not that expensive.

I'm in the process of taking out a 9k loan (my only student loan ever) for my masters and I wanna take an extra 1k to take my girlfriend to HHN at Orlando this october.

Would you still not recommend this? Please be as honest as possible and if I'm being an idiot just let me know. Extra points if it makes me feel bad.
