Life insurance won't pay out for death of a drunk driver? Insurance

Life insurance won't pay out for death of a drunk driver?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2019 03:01 PM PDT

So, I have a 31 year old former foster daughter with whom I'm still close. Her husband and the father of her 3 kids died last November in a tragic car accident (thankfully he was the only fatality.) He'd been insured for 1/2 mill but she just called me saying the insurance won't pay out since he was drunk at the time of the wreck.

Does this sound right? She gets details wrong, for example she thought his employer was going to continue their health insurance for a year which was not correct. She lives in Kansas.

If I have a deductible of 500 and fault is split 50/50 in a car accident does that mean I still pay the full 500 and get a check for 250 later?

Got into a car accident and diagnosed with whiplash, insurance company seems to be lowballing me.

    Posted: 24 Jun 2019 01:10 PM PDT

I was involved in an accident on May 10, 2019 and was diagnosed with whiplash (cervical strain) at the hospital. The insurance company of the at-fault driver(nationwide) has asked to settle for around 20,000 for medical bills within a 90-day window and a $2,000 cash settlement. This is the maximum they are willing to settle for according to the agent. I have been having pain in my neck, my upper back, and my lower back since then which the agent wrote off as "normal" for such an injury. Is this about the amount they should be offering and if not do I have any way to remedy this situation?

EDIT: Wow, wasn't expecting so much help. Thank you guys, you've given me a lot to consider.

need life insurance - where to start?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2019 12:18 PM PDT

My better half and I are in our early to mid 30s with two kids and a mortgage. The only life insurance we have is through our employers and we want to buy term life insurance. I am totally overwhelmed about where to start. Can you give any recommendations? Do we go with a CFP? I have this idea in my head that we could meet with someone for an hour for a reasonable fee ($150 or something) and they'll point us in the right direction and we can take care of the rest ourselves without hand holding. I like the idea of fee-only, but not sure if that's really a thing with insurance as it is with investing. Perhaps that's not realistic and we just need to deal with a broker? I'm not totally opposed to paying a commission, but of course want to make sure we're getting good insurance at a fair price as well. It feels so overwhelming even figuring out who to talk to first. Any and all thoughts are much appreciated! Thanks

    Michigan - Auto Accident Question

    Posted: 24 Jun 2019 04:56 PM PDT

My girlfriend, an authorized driver on our Progressive plan, was involved in an accident today. Everyone involved is uninjured. We are located in Michigan. She was cut off and hit the side of the other vehicle, police were called and the other driver was ticketed and deemed responsible. The only coverage we have for the actual vehicle is "Limited Property Damage -- $1000 each accident". We are waiting to hear back from Progressive, but we're wondering three things: 1) Is that $1000 money we'll likely be reimbursed for repairs? 2) May the other driver's insurance pay for repairs to our vehicle? 3) Do we need to wait to hear from Progressive to schedule repairs, or can we make repairs first and get any reimbursement later? (We figure we'll get it repaired regardless of what insurance may give us)

Which would be more costly for insurance?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2019 10:15 PM PDT

So I'm 16 and looking for a good first car for under 30k. I know the sporty cars will cost a lot for insurance coverage, but was wondering if there would be any difference between these cars in insurance cost: 2006 Subaru Impreza WRX STi and the 2017 Dodge Challenger. I want a nice car that would be fun to mod and kit, but also wouldn't break the bank on insurance. any ideas?

Windshield delaminating at edges, is this worth pursuing with insurance?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2019 05:51 PM PDT

The windshield was replaced once because it was cracked. Now, it has both another small chip (quarter sized) and is delaminating all across the top.

I talked to a body shop and they said they would probably just repair the chip rather than replace the glass. They said nothing about the delamination because I failed to point it out. The delamination looks just like this, and goes all the way across the glass:

    https://priuschat.com/threads/windshield-delamination.197400/

I have 20 year old cars with 0 delamination and original windshields.

Anyway, my state (FL) has a glass replacement law. Deductibles are 0 for cracked windshields if you have comprehensive. My windshield only has a small chip but is delaminating all across the top. Is this something that could be covered by my insurance at 0 cost?

    Eye exam redo

    Posted: 24 Jun 2019 09:34 PM PDT

    Hi everyone!

Short version—with insurance that allows one exam per year, are there ever cases where they'd let someone have a redo with a new doctor?

I got my yearly eye exam at a new doctor this year after moving to the other side of the city. I do not like this new doctor. He hasn't been listening to my concerns, he's been rude and dismissive, the contacts he gave me were blurry and now he has me trying out several different brands because "some contact brands are just blurry for people." All of this with a prescription that's slightly different from what I had before, and a brand new astigmatism.

As we're trying to figure out the contact situation, I went ahead and took my glasses prescription to get some new glasses outside of their office (the lowest priced frames were way out of my range, especially with my expensive new astigmatism lenses I'm going to have to buy). I got them today and they're making me dizzy and giving me a headache—something is definitely wrong with my vision.

All that is to say, I don't trust this guy or his assessment of my eyes, but my vision insurance only allows one appointment a year. Do they ever make exceptions for bad appointments and let people have another, or am I out of luck?

    Question about rental car

    Posted: 24 Jun 2019 03:26 PM PDT

On May 8, 2019, my husband was driving my SUV home from getting a part replaced, and was hit by another driver who ran a red light. The other insurance company (State Farm) has been stringing me along this whole time. It took them two weeks to accept liability and actually go get my totaled SUV. At first they said they weren't even going to look at it, and tried to get out of paying the storage fees. Then it took them two more weeks to look at the vehicle, during which time they first tried to tell me that the vehicle was not at the storage yard and then that they had not looked at the vehicle yet. On June 19 I emailed them the rental agreement the vehicle I have been using. I rented the car from family but it has taken so long that they decided to call a couple places and get a fair rate and write up a rental agreement. I got a call from State Farm the next day (the first time I've gotten a call/voicemail from this the entire process) saying they needed to talk to me about it. At this point it had been six weeks since the accident. The lady told me that they were mailing the info to a local agent so we could send in the title and get the check, and that they would pay for the rental through Tuesday (tomorrow) or whenever we picked up the check, which was today. She said she would include the rental amount in the packet and the agent could fill out the check. We went in today to get the check and it was already typed out for the replacement amount and did not include any mention of the rental agreement. I called and they're trying to tell me they aren't going to pay the amount they first told me they would.

Long story short, don't they have to pay the amount that they agreed to for the rental? Since it has been their fault it has taken over six weeks? I have called and called over these six weeks, it's not like I've wanted to wait this long, it's all them.

    Need some Advice General Liability

    Posted: 24 Jun 2019 08:33 AM PDT

My apologies for the long post this morning

I am a small mom and pop plumbing contractor in the state of California basically it is just me and a Van

I have to carry General Liability insurance with a set amount of coverage that reflects on my projected sales and work.

The issue I am having at the moment is a little over a month ago and out of the blue I get a call from a "collection company" demanding close to 10K in owed fees. Apparently they work for my previous General Liability insurer (I replaced them) as an auditor and they went back to the year 2016-2017 and have come up with that figure as owed.

Asked the collector on how they came to that number and he says since they couldn't get a hold of me they just used the average. I had moved from one city to another.

I asked why I hadn't been emailed or called prior to this since all my information is online and very accessible, and was met with "its not our responsibility".

Oddly I called the company I had used for that time period and they had no record of anything owed and then told me that they have a 3rd party who does these audits for them

This is all taking place over the span of a few weeks in which I was trying to get information on this "debt" with people not returning calls or emails.

Finally I get a phone number to call and they tell me that I am on the last stop before being forwarded to their legal department.

I tell them that I have been trying to get to the bottom of all this since I got the debt call and have been met with nothing but late responses, no responses, or no information at all.

The lady finally tells me you have a week to send us all your bank statements, profit loss, and Tax Returns or else we forward to legal.

Im just a plumber, Im not an accountant or laywer I don't know how to Respond to these people.

Reading their reviews online, this is all they do they send bills out in hopes people will just settle

How do I fight this, what kind of Lawyer Handles something like this?

I apologize again for the sloppy writing

I hope you all have an amazing day.

    TLDR

    Random Debt Appeared

I have no claims on my insurance

I was never Late on Any Payments

I didn't Lie on my gross receipts everything was accurate

    How Can I fight this??

Just need some friendly advice and pointed in the right direction

Inherited a car when my dad suddenly passed, but can't find his insurance. A non-driver, I'm uninsured myself. How do we find this?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2019 07:46 PM PDT

My dad died suddenly over the weekend and I've flown across the country to deal with legal matters. I have now inherited his car, but I personally do not drive since I live in a city relying on public transit. This means I don't have car insurance. I have meticulously looked through every piece of paperwork in his apartment and have called 4 insurance agencies that could be likely, to no avail. We have found the current registration and title though.

There is nearly a 0% chance that he did not have car insurance, since that would not be like my OCD father whatsoever. How can we work backwards to figure out where he holds his policy? I can't drive the car until we transfer the title over, but then the insurance is the next step.

    Question about starting in Insurance

    Posted: 24 Jun 2019 10:53 AM PDT

    Couple Questions

I am currently 20 years old one year left at community before I transfer to most likely a state school in Los Angeles, California.

I was planning on finance degree, because I wanted to get into Mortgage Banking but realized to start my own (i am young and ambitious humor me) i would need quite a bit of capital. That's where my interest r/insurance kicked in and realized it could be interesting.

Is the degree relevant if I plan on opening an Insurance Brokerage later ?

Now I want to have a full grasp of insurance so that if i do open the brokerage I can service my clients to the best of my abilities.

    1) What's the order of progression in insurance? Ex - Claims to Adjuster to Agent? Basically where should I start as an intro position?

What pay can I expect as claims vs adjuster? Is there any skills that are required or ways I could prepare?

    2) To my understanding if you want to make the real big bucks you would need to open a brokerage or be an agent correct?

    3) What should I know before getting into insurance?

    4) What are the most common mistakes you see people make in this industry or annoying practices?

    5) If you are work in insurance and don't mind me bombing you with questions i would love to ask! Specially if you own a brokerage!!!

sorry if this is the wrong reddit! thanks !

Edit: What is your experience with doing Business/Commercial Insurance/Claims/Adjustments

Should I ask the other driver if I can pay out of pocket, or is it not too bad to let this affect my insurance. Will my Insurance sky rocket?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2019 02:58 PM PDT

Hello! I am 21 years old, had my license since 17.5 years old. Never been in an accident or had anything that would affect my insurance. But today, sadly, I left my car in neutral (it's a manual, I forgot to put the brake on or put it in gear) and I walked to my class, and when I came back, my car had rolled slowly into another car, the only obvious damage is paint, the body had not been dented. I asked if I could pay for the damages without going through my insurance company, but is that really the best option? It might be cheaper than paying a bunch of money extra per month.

Claim Reps - Appraisal Metric? Call Center

    Posted: 24 Jun 2019 05:40 PM PDT

    Hello,

We have an appraisal metric, basically did we set the appraisal at the first notice of loss.

I always set the appraisal if I can. I am hindered if I don't have an appraiser in the area if it needs a field appraiser.

No amount of documentation helps, you either meet the metric or don't meet the metric.

If I'm taking a claimants first report, that also hinders me later when the adjuster sets the appraisal. If we accept liability.

The call center has a lot of work arounds, like for adherence skipping break or keeping your break short in case you're late to break, etc.

On my appraisal channeling, less than 6% of my claims have to be rechanneled, so whatever appraisal method I choose when I do the claim is pretty much correct.

There are people that are exceeding this at almost 97%, throughout my duration I've always been about low 80's, the metric is set at about 86 or 87.

So something is going on here with ppl scoring 90+, what is the work around?

I am told it is just luck, which I believe, because most of the time if your are policyholder I am not letting you off the line unless we can figure out something for an appraisal.

However when people are scoring 90s, I'm just wondering are people going back and resetting the appraisal or resending the assignment when the adjuster does it?

Property damage apartments - No insurance [CO]

    Posted: 24 Jun 2019 05:10 PM PDT

    Hello folks!

Yesterday I had my upstairs neighbors who accidentally flooded their bathroom tub. It leaked into my unit where my wife and I were moving our bedroom around. Thought it was a good idea to move over $8000 (Current evidential damage) worth of electronics in there.

When getting our apartment, we settled for the property insurance (big mistake). They don't cover property damages.

Am I to understand that I can still go through the neighbors insurance to file a claim, or do I need to file a motion through the court?

TL;DR - Neighbor in Colorado flooded their tub and leaked into our unit and destroyed $8000 worth of electronics. They have renters insurance, I don't. Can I file a claim myself with their insurance and policy number or do I take this to small claims court?

    Hypothetical Question (Research)

    Posted: 24 Jun 2019 02:39 PM PDT

Hi guys, I'm writing another book and I would like some basic information for a part of the story line.

In the previous book, an old closed mine that was still owned but not operated was set on fire as it was being sold - but not yet transferred - to a new owner. The new owner would be demolishing everything and rezoning anyways, and the fire only burned buildings that would have been demolished anyways.

What would the insurance and possibly legal issues be with this? I don't need to go into details, but I need to know how it affects the character that was selling the mine and what, if any problems he'd have to deal with, as he was basically bleeding money by owning the unused land and mine. The buyers still want the land. Would my character have insurance for that, would be have to pay any kind of deductible or fees to keep the sale going?

    Thanks!

Geico Arbitrarily Lowering Rates When Customers Try to Cancel???

    Posted: 24 Jun 2019 02:30 PM PDT

Hello everyone! I work for another insurer in the state of Louisiana. Every time we are beating a rate from Geico and bind the person shopping for insurance because we are cheaper... they call Geico to cancel and Geico magically lowers their rate?! This happens ALL THE TIME in Louisiana. I don't want to assume they are lowering coverage, because I honestly don't think they are... I just find this to be really strange. Anyone have any insight on this?

Insurance rental reimbursement for young driver

    Posted: 24 Jun 2019 01:27 PM PDT

I was in a car accident last week, somebody hit me with their car at my rear wheel while they were trying to get out of the parking lot. Anyway, their insurance is paying to get my car fixed and were ready to pay for a rental car too. However, when I went to the rental place, they said I could not rent a car there since I was under 20 (I'm 19), and I could rent it under a family member's name. That would incur a $10/day charge for me being an additional driver and a $15/day charge for being a young driver. They insurance (Progressive) said they would not cover any additional charges and their coverage for the rental vehicle is just $24.99/day. I need a car ASAP since I have to drive 15 miles to and from work every day and Uber//Lyft would start getting very heavy on my pocket. I was under the impression that the insurance company would be handling all expenses to get me my rental car. Am I getting the short end of the stick here? Any insight is greatly appreciated.

    Edit: I'm in Texas.

Adjusting auto premium for 6 month plan after 1 month?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2019 09:34 AM PDT

I've been looking at Geico for car insurance in NY that I'd like to begin on 7/7. I have an accident that happened 7/26/2016 and Geico asks for accidents in the past 36 months when providing a quote; the difference between an accident that was 25-36 months ago versus >36 months ago is about $16/mo. Has anyone had any success with getting their rate "modified", ie. in my case, getting the $16/mo price after the accident "falls off" and becomes more than 3 years ago?

35 Years and State Farm Dumping Us - Need Help

    Posted: 24 Jun 2019 12:52 PM PDT

Basically the title says it all - after 35 years, State Farm called us up today and said we are no longer insurable and are being dumped in September. My family and I are being placed into the Illinois Fair Plan insurance. We've had four claims over 12 years: 2007; 2014; 2017; and this year. I can provide more information because I'm not familiar with insurance, and quite frankly, I'm really concerned right now, but any advice on what the next steps to do would be appreciated. Please help my family and I navigate through this, because the State Farm Insurance Agent isn't being helpful on what to do now that she unceremoniously dumped us. She also said that no other insurance companies will insure us for at least three years. We've never missed a payment.

Diminished Value claim? Need advise as information is vague on the internet.

    Posted: 24 Jun 2019 12:20 PM PDT

Here is the situation. I've paid my auto loan down to a point where I won't be upside-down trading it in (finally). I'm ready to get into a different vehicle with a smaller monthly payment or something I can pay off pretty quick. I went to the dealer and they want half of what KBB says trade in value for the car is. "What the heck..."?

Apparently the accident caused by someone else a few years ago is showing as "structural damage" on the Carfax report. I was told by the insurance adjuster that it was just cosmetic damage and it would not be totalled out because of this. Total damages were in the $8000 range which I thought was high. Usually an accident with frame damage would total out the car do to it not able to sell for how much it should be worth right?

Should I contact the business that fixed the car to see if it really did have structural damage? I feel that it is unfair that I can't sell my car due to someone else's neglect. There are diminished value laws but I'm not sure how to go about it or if it's even possible because this happened in 2017. I live in Nebraska. If anyone can shine some light on this that would be great. Thanks in advance.

[California] Car rental coverage after no fault collision

    Posted: 24 Jun 2019 12:15 PM PDT

A couple weeks ago our only car got hit while it was parked and unoccupied. The other driver ran off without leaving a note, but fortunately some good citizens in the area took video and we were able to locate the other driver, who eventually admitted to what happened and took full responsibility.

We both use our car for personal use and work (I am in finance and wife does high end design/production), meeting clients throughout the week. The car is a 2018 BMW 440i so it's considered in the "Luxury/Exotic" category (per our insurance company).

Their insurance is Ameriprise and we have Safeco, we decided to go through Ameriprise. Took it into a local collision center and got an estimate, it's around $2k and estimated they'll need 10 days to complete the repairs. Was planning on bringing it in today.

Everything was going fine until it came time to arrange the rental car. Ameriprise said based on the type of car we have they would authorize a Premium class car, which is a Nissan Maxima or similar. Don't get me wrong, there isn't anything wrong with a Nissan Maxima, but it's not the same class as a BMW. Ameriprise says they replace based on size, not the class of car.

Safeco says that if we were only the claimant, and since it's used for both personal and business, then they'd authorize a comparable replacement in the Luxury/Exotic category. However, since we are also the insured, then they go by our policy coverage which has a $50/day limit. Checking around, a comparable Luxury class rental is about $86/day (which would be a total of $360 out of pocket for the 10 days it's needed for).

Went back to Ameriprise to bring this up, the adjuster said his supervisor would only authorize a Premium rental. Is there anything additional I can mention to persuade them to cover a comparable Luxury rental car replacement?

    Thank you for all responses.

    Question about complicated claim process

    Posted: 24 Jun 2019 11:53 AM PDT

In may of 2018 I was backed into front right corner of my truck, unable to prove the other driver was at fault, both of us were considered at fault, I was with geico and they said the claim would remain open indefinitely even when i switched providers, i Thought awesome I can get it done right before my lease is up, I had then switched insurance companies from geico to allstate, a year goes by and my lease is almost up, I figured it was time to get the claim taken care of, so I scheduled the inspection and repair with geico, then the same week, this week, I was hit in the center of the front bumper, both drivers me and the other were at fault and agreed to take care of it on our own without involving police. Now I'm unsure of how to take care of this issue, both accidents were on the front bumper, both accidents are covered under different insurance companies and the bumper needs to be replaced from the original accident anyway. whats my next step? I'm not trying to commit fraud I just dont know how this situation will be handled or which company I should be calling. any advice would be greatly appreciated!~

Ive had awefully bad luck with this truck I will be glad when im rid of it
