Seasoned AE’s in Software Sales, how important is cold calling to your prospecting efforts?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 04:45 AM PDT

I'm talking full sales cycle reps where the sales cycle often takes months to maybe over a year, have you found that calling people cold is crucial to your overall success?

I'm not looking for a douche bag answer like "Just pick up the phone and dial," I'm truly curious as to what the opinion is out there these days.

Studies like this one below by Baylor have people thinking if it's truly a good use of your time:

    https://www.baylor.edu/business/kellercenter/news.php?action=story&story=126250

I have a few good years of experience under my belt and have seen countless successful AEs hit quota without ever picking up the phone cold. It seems like the success of an AE is generally due to a number of factors all at play: brand awareness, referrals, solid territory, treating people well, etc.

Also, the years that I have hit quota I would not consider them my heaviest prospecting years.

How to set up and structure a sales team for an Architectural Firm? Or do I focus on online marketing/lead Generation?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 10:06 AM PDT

    Hello Sales Community,

I own an architectural design firm based out of California. I'm looking to increase sales. Do I hire someone to do sales or focus on online marketing?

If I were to higher someone to do sales, what's the best way to set it up? Base salary + commission? Commission only?

AITA - Firing a SDR after parents died

    Posted: 02 Jun 2019 05:10 PM PDT

I am not sure if you all saw this over in the AITA sub AITA Sub Link, but I wanted to get this sub's thoughts.

I don't know if they are assholes or not, but they don't seem very smart from a business perspective. It seems like the rep was performing well and was going to be promoted. While this rep didn't have closing experience, they did know the product and the market. Finding a closing rep (SMB/Mid Market/Enterprise, etc.), would take 3-4 months and then onboard/ramp for 3-9 months. So at worst they lost out on 12 months of productivity. Instead they should have given this rep some time and see if they bounced back. I bet they probably would have.

What do you all think? As a VP of sales at a software company...I don't know what that person was thinking.

Just to be abundantly clear: I am not the author of the AITA post.

Approached by a roofing company looking for salespeople. Too good to be true?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 08:57 AM PDT

I sell cars, and was approached by two people I thought were customers who were recruiters for a roofing company that also does water damage restoration. The reps talked about the company's family values, the 24 year old one talked about how after 3 years with the company he's a branch manager (it checks out on their site) and makes X amount and made 90k his first year. The average job is "1800 in my pocket" I imagine that's a little on the higher side. Basically a LOT of emphasis on how "if you hustle" you can make 6 figures working 40 hours a week. Basically a bunch of things that sound great to hear, but this isn't my first rodeo so I listened with caution. I'm about to do research on the company. Just wanted to make this post to see if anyone here was in this field going door to door and inspecting and selling roofing. They were out scouting dealerships for motivated enthusiastic salespeople. Is this the conventional process? There's just something about it that feels off to me. Promising a whole lot of rosy things to someone they hardly know and basically offering me a job. The guy encouraged me to research and do my due diligence, so I kind of also feel like this may be legit.

Sales Training Program is closing at my hub and I’m stuck in the cross-hairs

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 12:02 PM PDT

II work at a big SaaS company in their Bay Area HQ and am part of a post-college SDR program. I've been in my role for 11 months in upmarket HCM. Exceeded quota 2/3 quarters and enjoy my current role. I'm 23 years old and have a great work-life balance.

So last Friday our FY-19 ended and our HQ was informed today that they will be ending the Sdr program in my hub. It was a business decision and not a performance issue. They want the other locations to be the SDR hubs.

Us SDRs have a couple options that i thought up but the decision has to be made by June 28th so I'm looking for some input. I appreciate you all!

Option 1: Internal promotion. A lot of people are quitting their mirrored rep role once they get their bonuses so there might be openings on some SaaS teams soon.

Advantages: stability, I'll be able to leave on my own terms when I'm ready, clear career progression, top tier training, looks great on a resume.

Disadvantage: work environment is not great, spend a lot of money on gas, prospects for career progression in this hub beyond a closing sales role (thinking management eventually) seems dire,

Option 2: Take the severance package (July paid with full benefits,+ PTO accrued+immediately file for unemployment) and look for a lateral move or try to get a closing role (not sure if I'm quite ready)

Advantages: Higher base salary, start up feel would have a better work environment and has better perks (free lunch), saving money on gas. Could also look to join another big tech company instead of a start-up. I'm young so I can afford to make mistakes.

Disadvantages: more risk, learning curve, not leaving on my own terms, training would probably not be as good or consistent.

Either way I don't think I'm in a bad situation. I'm going out of the country from July 15-25th so I'd probably start my new role in August. Let me know your thoughts

Companies with good training programs for Sales Engineers?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2019 04:53 PM PDT

Tried my luck over in r/AskEngineers but no dice, figured I'd copy'n paste here.

Current place of employment (small OEM) has limited career mobility and I'm looking for a change of pace from what I currently do. I'm thinking of going the Sales Engineering route next since I've worked with a few of them (vendors/suppliers) at my job and they all seem to get better compensation/faster promotions, along with a more variety of work/projects from a day-to-day basis.

My work experience is 1.5 years as a Test/Manufacture Engineering position for an Aerospace company doing DoD testing, along with setting up workflow processes for the new product lines. My next/current job I've had 3.5 years of being a Product Engineer for a small OEM. The job I currently have is what I'd call a MEs "wet dream" in terms of everything I'm responsible for design wise. I.e. Hydraulics, pneumatics, electrical, structural (sheetmetal), and programming. It's perfect role for someone who likes being jack of all trades but master of none, which I did enjoy for quite sometime. Now I'm looking to move on for better pay, more travel, less of a 9-5 gig, and more flexibility.

I'm just not sure which companies to look at for my next role. Since I know nothing about the sales process, I was hoping to start at a place that has a good training program for Sales Engineers.

Any way to tell if a job is a scam?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 09:16 AM PDT

Recently I posted about my job offer which ended up in me being ghosted and everyone here thought it was a scam. I just got an interview for another job in the same industry (financing/loans) and I'm kind of wary because of the last offer.

Is there any way to tell if this place is sketchy or not?

Zoominfo shows they hit a big peak last year in employment and revenue and then in Q1 of this year they hit a big low on employment (7 employees) and revenue.

    Interview Advice?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 07:14 AM PDT

I've an interview tomorrow (got dropped on me today) for a role at a worldwide leader in media sales with the MD of Sales. Any tips would be appreciated.

The role is a significant step up from my current role, although it's more difficult there's more room for success and more room for development, I'll be selling media solutions for advertising to people in the North American market.

    Thanks.

    Salesforce Mail "Via"

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 03:24 AM PDT

    Hi

What's your opinion on sending emails through Salesforce instead of regular email?

Do you think that the "u/hagridontherocks via alsjdal.saldkjs.jlaksjd.salesforce.com" in the email heading is hindering response?

What are the best blogs for quick 10-15 minute reads?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2019 09:11 PM PDT

    Hey /r/sales!

I've been in the ring for almost 4 years now. Mostly in the B2C Solar industry (which may as well be B2B as everyone is after the ROI).

We do not Cold Call and run a very inbound leaning style.

I've got dozens of books on selling, psychology, and similar at home that I love to flick through. However, I often find myself with 10-15 minutes in between calls or client meetings where I'd love to devour some quick blog posts (especially ones I could share with my team).

Where is your favourite place to go for this kind of easily digestible content? (besides /r/sales, of course).

    Thanks!

    Became an independent energy broker

    Posted: 02 Jun 2019 06:53 PM PDT

Hi I had some success doing door to door residential sign ups for a while it was nice money now I've signed up with a brokerage and I'm doing this independently. I have a few questions. Is there anything you think I could do to add value to my product? We have low rates for gas and electric but the company I was selling for before would give out gift cards that seemed to really work. How can I get lists of people to call for b2b and consumer sales? Any recommendations on getting contracts with actual suppliers instead of having to go through a brokerage? Thanks

    Scenario Interview

    Posted: 02 Jun 2019 04:24 PM PDT

    Account executive role

3rd interview, scenario given, selling their product (software related to healthcare industry) to a small private doctors office

In this scenario, they've already discussed their problem with me.

Do I still ask those questions to identify their problem and highlight sense of urgency?

Should I have a deck of PowerPoint slides?

Should I be super concerned I have very little industry knowledge or real insight on their sales cycle?

    Thanks in advance

Got a Sales internship at a very large FMCG company. What should I expect?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2019 10:01 PM PDT

    Basically the title.

I start in a month. Applied for a shorter managerial inter ship but was offered a one year sales internship as my degree was in marketing and I have an interest in sales.

The problem is, I have no idea what Sales in FMCG looks like. Am I going to be speaking with reatail outlets and stores and such?

    Thanks in advance.

    Switching to a sales career

    Posted: 02 Jun 2019 04:41 PM PDT

I currently work in ad operations and want to switch into sales. I've been in my position for about 4 years now, 25 years old. What is the best way to make the jump? Just accept a lower paying account executive position and work my way up?

I am interviewing with two companies for an SDR position, I have a feeling that one company may offer me the job on the spot tomorrow, how do I juggle the offers until I learn more about the other job?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2019 12:38 PM PDT

I have a face to face tomorrow with a digital marketing agency. I briefly spoke with the sales manager last week and he said "I like what I am hearing, send me an email with your resume and lets have an interview this Monday".

I also have an exploratory phone interview on Tuesday with an saas company.

The marketing agency has zero info on Glassdoor but the salary was listed on the job site itself, the saas company has good reviews and I feel like it MAY lead to bigger opportunities later on since it seems that saas is the way to go for advancement .

I have no degree and am starting the sales game late. How can I not mess this up? I don't want to leave a bad impression on the first company if they offer me the job. The second opportunity is only a phone interview...so there will me more interviews to follow with them...and who knows if I will get it.

Should I accept the first (marketing) opportunity if they offer and back out of it if I like the other...or should I tell them that I need to think about it (which I have heard can be a bad idea.)?

    Any advice?
