    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Fundamentals Friday May 31, 2019

    Posted: 31 May 2019 01:07 AM PDT

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on fundamentals, but if fundamentals aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against fundamentals here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Most fundamentals are updated every 3 months due to the fact that corporations release earnings reports every quarter, so traders are always speculating at what those earnings will say, and investors may change the size of their holdings based on those reports. Expect a lot of volatility around earnings, but it usually doesn't matter if you're holding long term, but keep in mind the importance of earnings reports because a trend of declining earnings or a decline in some other fundamental will drive the stock down over the long term as well.

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

    Market Cap - Shares Outstanding - Volume - Dividend - EPS - P/E Ratio - EPS Q/Q - PEG - Sales Q/Q - Return on Assets (ROA) - Return on Equity (ROE) - BETA - SMA - quarterly earnings

If you have a basic question, for example "what is EBITDA," then google "investopedia EBITDA" and click the Investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

$KHC, buy now and lifetime hold?

    Posted: 31 May 2019 06:23 PM PDT

Thinking of buying into $KHC now since all the downgrades have made it PLUMET. I feel like this would be a good time to buy in and hold it for life. The products are there and on a long enough timeline I think this could be a win.

That being said, I do not know everything about the accounting mishap and how much permanent damage that could do to the company.

Would love any insight on this matter and any discussion about it in general.

Edit: The $15B write down seems kind of severe to me as well.

I still have made a profit in total but I'm worried that soon I'll be loosing money. Should I hold and how long will the trade war last?

I had been considering adding another dividend stock to my portfolio and almost bought a bunch of Altria before the recent dip. Is the recent dip likely a overreaction or will lagging tobacco sales drag the price down further?

Justice Department is reportedly preparing antitrust probe of Google

    Posted: 31 May 2019 06:22 PM PDT

    https://www.cnbc.com/2019/05/31/doj-preparing-antitrust-probe-of-google---dow-jones.html

The U.S. Justice Department is planning an antitrust investigation into Alphabet's Google subsidiary, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday. The effort will touch on web search and other parts of Google, the report said.

The report comes amid discussion from politicians and the public about whether large technology companies should be broken up. The Justice Department launched a major antitrust case against Microsoft in 1998 that led to several rules the company had to follow for years.

Thoughts on $PAYS as a growth stock

    Posted: 31 May 2019 09:42 PM PDT

What do you guys think about this stock? I'm trying to get into small-cap-trading and I wanna see how I did! Reason I picked this stock is quite simple. It's fundamentals are all rock-solid and it has incredible growth over the past years. It is in a rapidly expanding sector and having looked at its competitors, this one seems to have the most potential.

I think it can go down a bit further and that's where I'd like to enter ideally.

Are there possible long term effect of the trade war and tariffs

    Posted: 31 May 2019 07:54 AM PDT

I'm wondering what the opinion is on the long term effect of the Chinese/American trade war, tariffs on Mexico, etc.

My immediate reaction is that this just presents good buying opportunity, economy seemed strong prior to these disputes and a lot of negotiate movement in the market directly related to the 'war'. At the minimum I'd expect a bad quarter or two (after it's resolved). But is there risk for negative outcomes over years? Any companies in particular who's long term growth may be impacted?

    Posted: 31 May 2019 09:54 AM PDT

What do you think will be the markets reaction (we know it is going to drop) the real question is how much and how long? The president just announced a 5% Tariff on Mexican goods. Plus the 20% of Chinese goods. What's next? A 5% Tariff on Canadian maple syrup?

    Tesla Goof... Thoughts?

    Posted: 31 May 2019 07:15 AM PDT

    I Done Goofed...

Tesla had been going back and forth between 300 and 330 for a few months it seemed, always staying within that range. I finally decided to buy in at around 300, thinking I could catch the upswing.

Unfortunately, Tesla was struck with bad news a few days after my purchase (typical). Naturally, I assumed it was temporary and that they would bounce back as they had done so many times before. But alas, the bad news seemed to roll in more steadily as time went on. Now I'm stuck with Tesla sitting at ~$185 and left feeling like a total fool for trusting in them.

At this point, what do I do? Do I hold and ride it out, hoping for any sort of gain above $200, or dump in the fear that they will continue to drop for the foreseeable future? I know the odds of me making back that $115 a share drop are impossibly slim right now, but if I could even get a sliver back I'd take it.

    I'd love y'all's opinion

does anyone know of any penny stocks (like .05-2c stocks that blew past $1 in the recent past? How do you find them?

    Posted: 31 May 2019 04:36 PM PDT

I want to glory in other people's success. Not really. I'm in a couple that have blown up beyond 10c after purchasing at 2-3c (so I'm feeling really good) and people on hotcopper (an Australian stock forum, I'm on the ASX) keep saying these utter fucking ridiculous numbers like $20, etc, then DYOR and GLTAH and it's super weird.

Do Americans have forums full of old people saying DYOR and GLTAH? And why does everyone keep saying DYOR, is that a stockmarket player's way of saying "but idk if it ruins your life"?

New to this World of investing - Seeking Advice

    Posted: 31 May 2019 03:20 AM PDT

Hello! For my 25th birthday my Grandma has given me $2,000 to invest in stocks. She had me set up a Charles Schwab account since that is what she uses. However I have the $2,000 in my bank account at this moment still. I probably will use Charles Schwab unless someone can give me a good reason to use something else.

She has mentioned that I should invest in some ETF's which I may do.

I'll be using all the resources in this thread to gain information but that will take a while.

I created this thread in order to see if anyone has any right off the bat advice or anything I should keep in mind. I plan to think of this money as not something I will use for anything besides investing since it was a gift for a specific purpose.

Sorry if this thread is useless, as I haven't gone through the information provided in the stickied posts, but I just thought I'd ask now as I do want to get started as soon as possible! Going to be doing some learning myself after I sleep and wake up.
