Victim of hit and run, got a plate, but seems perpetrator doesn't have insurance

    Posted: 14 Apr 2019 01:34 AM PDT

    GEICO in Florida.

Last night I was involved in a 3 vehicle collision ending in a hit and run.
I was stopped at a red light waiting to turn, suddenly I hear tires screeching and neutral revving, and BOOM, a motorbike (let's call him Douche) crashes into my rear end and another rider (let's call him Guy) falls off of his bike.

--Guy and Douche ask if each other is okay, my passenger gets out and tries to help, I get out my phone to call 911.
--Douche gets on his bike and speeds off, I catch his plate and repeat it twice into my dashcam and give it to dispatch.
--Guy is injured (torn knee ligament) and goes off with the FD to the hospital.
--Responding officer takes our statements as well as an additional witness's.
--My passenger got a hold of additional dashcam footage from another driver showing the falling, both bikes, and fleeing.

My vehicle has some rear end underbody spoiler damage, rear bumper damage, and a borked muffler that makes a terrible rattle whenever the engine is on now. I'm guessing the repair costs is a couple hundred in parts and a long afternoon to replace (or a few hundred at a shop).

My family, however, does NOT carry collision insurance on this vehicle.

I check the police report today and there is no listing for insurance on Douche's bike. I do a little snooping and see the owner of the bike (may or may not be Douche) has his two businesses, family, loves God, blah blah blah, and a truck so I'm guessing he carries insurance on that vehicle.

Is there any recourse for me?
Or since Douche/Not Douche doesn't carry insurance on that bike, I'm SOL?

Should I bother reporting the collision to my insurance company (i.e. will this raise my family's premiums and make it harder for us to switch companies in the future; will anything come out of it)?

Switched auto insurance companies. Unknown charge one month into term.

    Posted: 13 Apr 2019 06:56 PM PDT

I switched my auto insurance to Ameriprise in December. I was given a $208 quote for 6 month coverage, which I paid. A month later in January, I was charged an additional $39 which I did not catch until I logged in today. Now, all documents under my account show that my current policy costs $247 for the current term. This is bizarre to me, especially because I still have the initial documents from December which shows that my semiannual premium is $208.

Can anyone help me identify the cause for this $39 hike in January? The only change I've made to my account is updating my address to my new place, which is 5 miles away from my old address. Could this minor change actually account for the 19% increase in my premium?

My husband was in an accident while driving my sister’s car. Will his insurance cover it or hers?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2019 04:40 PM PDT

My husband is a mechanic and had my sisters car for a few days so that he could do some work as a favor to her. Not through his place of work, just at home. He was driving it today and was in a minor accident with another vehicle. He is at fault for the accident. Whose insurance will cover the damage to my sister's car and the other vehicle? Ours or my sister's?

Why are pets excluded from my home coverage?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2019 12:02 PM PDT

Not dog bites/3rd party liability but under regular home coverages why are pets or "animals, birds, or fish" excluded. What's the theory here?

Worried I'll lose my health insurance.

    Posted: 13 Apr 2019 07:38 PM PDT

    Hi all.

I live in Minnesota and was on Medical Assistance because my pay is shit. Now I make a bit more than allowed to qualify for MA and recieved an income discrepancy form to fill out. Filled it out correctly and sent it in today. Not sure when I'll hear anything back.

I know I can't keep MA - but do you think they would be able to immediately switch me over to MinnesotaCare (low cost insurance, I quality for it cause I'm still broke lol but not broke enough for MA). I couldn't even afford a month without insurance. If I lose coverage I am beyond screwed. My health is awful and I simply could not afford to not have insurance. This whole thing is causing me extreme anxiety.

    sigh

Smoke damage from fire in store below my apartment - which insurance would be responsible?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2019 05:15 PM PDT

There is an electric bike repair shop underneath my apartment building that had a fire a few days ago. I don't know the cause of the fire, but I've looked inside before and I've seen them charging a ton of batteries on power strips and can only assume something short circuited.

There was no major damage to anything in my apartment (firefighters put some holes in the wall and broke in the door) but even with keeping the windows open and running an air purifier it still smells like smoke very heavily. I am assuming at this point the smell may not go away, and I need to replace things like my area rugs, bed sheets, some clothes, maybe even the couch or the bed itself (memory foam mattress so it could lock in the smoke smell).

The management company had insurance adjusters come through and take pictures. Am I supposed to be reaching out to my management company with a list of items I want to replace and their approximate value and have their insurance adjusters take care of it, or should I be reaching out to my renters insurance to make a claim? Or do I somehow need to get in contact with the repair shop's insurance company since the fire was in their building and not technically in my apartment building?

    Collision Aftermath Advice

    Posted: 13 Apr 2019 04:10 PM PDT

This occurred in Ontario, Canada. A family member collided into a parked car, no injuries. We have standard insurance that covers our collision costs, while the driver of the parked car only has fire and theft insurance since they weren't planning on driving the car during the winter time.

I live in a no fault insurance place. Our insurance covered our repairs while their insurance is refusing to cover the costs due to their specific policies. Now they're threatening to sue us if we don't reimburse their costs.

We're at fault no doubt, but doesn't the no fault policy mean their responsible for their own insurance repairs? Any advice?

    Two Deductibles for Overlapping Damage

    Posted: 13 Apr 2019 11:28 AM PDT

Okay, so i got into two accidents, one for hitting a rabbit at 65 mph on a highway which took small chunk of my bumper and another one a month later where i hit a shopping cart at 35mph due to 60-75 mph gusts in my area. This both happened at night, by the time i saw both of em, it was too late to do anything. Both damages are on the bumper. So i filed for the shopping cart as a comprehensive claim, but also mentioned the rabbit incident. Therefore, they did two separate claims for the bumper. Is there anything i can do to reduce this to one deductible? My deductible is 500 so now i have to pay 1k for overlapping damages. I have already turned my car in to the repair shop yesterday but have not paid anything yet. Could i cancel one of the claims somehow?

Update: They would have had to replace the whole bumper for both cases

Insurance company thinks I am partial at fault

    Posted: 13 Apr 2019 06:45 AM PDT

I was in an accident yesterday with a car making an unprotected left turn. I stepped on my brake hard as soon as I saw the car and avoided a major crash, but my front bumper hit the side rear bumper of the other vehicle. My insurance determined the other car is 100% at fault, but the other insurance determined that it was 80% at fault. So what happens when there is at fault dispute between insurance companies? Does it happen often? Anybody had experience in this kind of situation?

    Help with health insurance choices.

    Posted: 13 Apr 2019 02:09 PM PDT

I am a healthy 25 year old about to leave my parents insurance at the end of April so I plan on enrolling with my current employers health insurance (Aspirus Arise) but I am leaving for a new job (UW health) in middle of May. I am not sure how long I will be covered after I leave my current employer but I know that my future employer health insurance doesnt start until 2 months after my start date (August). I do have the option to start my future employer health coverage right when I start in May but the premium would be $700 a month. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Are there advantages to having Collision on an old car?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2019 01:51 PM PDT

I have 2 older cars that I love. They are both super reliable, cheap to maintain, and work great for me. I bought them both in cash. I could definitely afford nicer cars, but love my old reliable ones and don't really want to upgrade.

    90's Landcruiser with low mileage.

90's Honda Accord with low mileage.

My wife and I are the only drivers. We are both on our policy with Geico. No tickets or accidents on our record. We pay $488 per year for liability coverage.

    Coverage is

    50k (person)/ 100k (incident) Bodily injury

    25K Property damage

50k/100k bodily injury for Uninsured Motorist incidents

    25K Uninsured Motorist incidents

I've always refrained from getting Collision coverage since the Blue Book values of my vehicles is super low. The honda has 100k miles, and I imagine it going for anther 100k miles but the blue book value is like $1200. The Land cruiser's KBB value is $2,000 , but you would never buy one for that in my area. They routinely go for 6-8k.

Is there a reason I should be considering collision coverage here? I just assumed that if I wrecked one of them, that the check for the KBB value wouldn't cover the cost of replacement..

Also -- does my coverage seem adequate? I am reasonably successful with assets (house, financial accounts, own a successful company), so I'm wondering if I should go higher on the coverage level. I've never actually spoken to an insurance agent, I've always just ordered my Geico insurance online since I was 16.

First car, range of insurance prices

    Posted: 13 Apr 2019 12:34 PM PDT

I'm 21, just got my license, looking at quotes and they range from 140 a month to 850 a month, most of them on the higher end. I'm in michigan. The 140 has just above the legally required coverage, it seems okay to me but I dont really know what I'm looking for. I'm being told that 140 a month for a newly licensed driver is really good, but I'm hesitant to choose one

Florida Medicare Advantage plan co-insurance question calculation question

    Posted: 13 Apr 2019 07:55 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I have a Blue Cross Medicare Advantage Plan and live in the Tampa region. I got new custom built AFOs. I misunderstood the coverages and I think they made an error in billing as well. I was told I had a $0 copay, and $0 deductible, both of which I verified. I forgot about coinsurance..... I got a huge unexpected bill.

Unfortunately I got the bill after they closed Friday, so I'll have to wait until Monday to handle things. I plan on calling Carecentrix who sent me the bill after work when I leave the hospital at 330pm on Monday. Will probably call the brace builder as well.

The brace builder charged 13,226.18. There is an adjustment of -$10,226.90. Insurance payments received $314.04 I'm being billed 2,645.24

I did the math that is 20% of the original $13,226.18.

I was under the initial impression they'd be free.

I understand I made an error forgetting about co-insurance. But I feel like I'm being overcharged since they're charging me 20% of the original total instead of 20% of the adjusted price.

    13,226.18-10,226.90 = 2999.28. Before the insurance payment of $314.04.

I would prefer they be $0 out of pocket but if I must pay 20% I'd much rather pay 20% of 2999.28 than 20% of $13,226.18.

[IL] Time-limit to making a claim?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2019 11:21 AM PDT

I posted this in r/LegalAdvice and was advised to post here, so apologies for the poor wording I've been trying to figure out how to word it but think explaining it will be best:

My girlfriends car was rear-ended while parked on the street in July 2018. She has the contact information for who hit it, and a police report was filed. Her rear-bumper was damaged, and needs to either be replaced or repainted. The person who hit her said she would rather pay to get it fixed out of pocket, rather than getting insurance involved. My gf was fine with this, but as she works two jobs and needs her car to get to both, she has not had a chance to fix it yet.

She wants to sell her car this summer and get something better on gas, but wants the rear-end fixed first. She has attempted to contact the lady who hit her a few times now, to no response. My gf was just going to get it fixed herself because she didn't want to deal with it further, but its looking like she needs a whole new bumper and paint ($1000 quote at the first place).

My question is; can she still have the other ladies insurance pay for it? Is there a time-frame this needs to be filed, and the lady just waited it out then ghosted so as to not need to pay for it? Does my gf have any legal standing / etc to get this paid for?

    Thanks!

Rear-ended, Best course of action is?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2019 07:33 AM PDT

Posting on behalf of a friend. Rear-ended buy driver A after changing lanes on highway in rush hour. Both drivers pulled over to exchange information. In the discussion driver A admitted falling asleep and I understand this is considered hearsay. No police called. Driver A insurer now saying that driver B swerved in front of driver B and will only pay half of damages or driver B can claim on own insurance. B then called A to verify their post accident conversations about falling asleep to which A again admitted fault so B asked for written statement. Driver A has since stopped responding to calls or texts having not sent the statement. There has been no further response from driver A insurer since their offer 2 weeks ago. Driver B's car is still drivable and likely$1,500 in damage. KBB private party value is $2-4k. I'm certain that had a formal police report and statement been given this would be a different story. At this point what options or course of action should be take. Thank you!

How to find the insurance carrier of a commercial truck?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2019 11:11 AM PDT

    Hi,

My car was totaled while parked in a private parking lot(uninsured & unused for few months). The parking lot has a camera and I was able to get a copy of the footage. I was able to identify the company and license plate (found VIN # online) and I called the company and they literally laughed at me, and the woman I spoke with said "you're lying" and when I told her there's a video of the accident she clamped up and said "I am not going to give our info, you need to give me your info and I will pass it along to the VP". That was 3 weeks ago. They've blocked my number now. I got my car insured liability but the car is totaled and I told my insurance about the situation they said since the accident happened before them they cannot even help me locate the insurance carrier of the other party. I filed police report and they said they have sent a letter to the company but have not heard back.

Do you guys have any idea where I can go from here? I have the license plate and VIN number and company name....is there anyway to find their carrier info? I need thanks in advance!

How long does it typically take for death benefit to be paid?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2019 11:01 AM PDT

My mom passed away in mid January after being hit by a drunk driver. My dad filed a claim with their life insurance company and they still have not paid out her death benefit. Does it typically take this long?

I had spoken with my dad's agent to get an update and he said they were still wrapping up the investigation. He didn't give any specifics. Just curious what kind of investigation would be needed when my mom was killed by a drunk driver? (The man is currently awaiting trial)

Also the policy was purchased in November 2018, so I'm not sure if being only a couple months old is a factor in why it's taking so long.

What am I allowed to do without being licensed to sell insurance?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2019 10:35 AM PDT

I am trying to work with a few local agents on a website that would do the following:

    1. Customer fills out a quote form with personal information
    2. Insurance agent who is licensed in customers state receives the customers information and submits a quote/estimate for the customer to review
    3. Customer can go in my website and review the quote that was submitted by licensed agent and accept the quote and pay by getting in touch with the agent.

Would this be legal since me (the website owner) is not licensed to sell insurance? By simply accepting customer information and transferring it on, would I be okay, as the agents are all licensed who are giving the quotes?

    Thanks for any help!

In a not-at-fault car accident on Wednesday

    Posted: 13 Apr 2019 10:29 AM PDT

TLDR; was in an accident this week that I wasn't at fault for. First time dealing with my insurance and the other driver's insurance. I'm not sure what to ask of the at-fault driver's insurance or what my insurance company/rep should be doing on my behalf.

Wednesday morning traffic, a driver traveling behind me crossed over into the center turn lane, hit another driver and then hit me. At-fault driver didn't have his insurance info with him, but gave all personal info and name of insurance company he had. My car was the only one that wasn't "drivable" from the scene as the damage was to my back quarter panel area and rear driver's side tire is flat. So, down to single vehicle sharing with my partner and that's not working very well.

In dealing with my insurance, I told my rep that I'd like to go through this guy's insurance for repairs. My rep took my statement of the accident and then asked that I get the at-fault driver's insurance info when his rep calls me.

Played phone tag with his rep from Wednesday and Thursday. Friday, the guy's rep has his phone going straight to voicemail. Left voicemails but no call back. Finally call the 1800 number of the insurance company early Friday evening, explain the issue I'm having and they try to get me over to someone in that rep's office. Finally get on the line with a guy who's in that reps office. He gets some minimal info from me (no accident statement as my rep had thought I'd need to provide them) and sets me up with a reservation to pick up a rental car whenever the place opens. Then he lets me pick a shop for repairs to my vehicle. Get that all set and he tells me a service agent from the mechanic shop will call to set up an appointment for repairs to my vehicle.

My question is, with this accident now going to be associated with my VIN number, do I need to ask this guy's insurance to reimburse me for depreciation of my vehicle? And if so, do I need to do that before repairs take place? It's an 07 and in looking at my car's KBB value the cost of repairs will probably come close to the actual value of what the car's still worth.

Also, should my rep have just took the whole "hands off" approach after I stated I wanted to go through the at-fault driver's insurance? He tried to ask if I wanted to use my Collision insurance and pay my deductible but I'm not paying out of pocket for something that wasn't my fault. I thought once I filed my claim and made my statement, my insurance would be handling this whole thing instead of myself. My rep pretty much just wants to let him know how it works out.

    Totaled Vehicle Question

    Posted: 13 Apr 2019 09:47 AM PDT

My 2010 RAV4 got hit with a bad hail storm, and the insurance company deemed it a total loss. Now they're giving me the option of keeping the car and $7500, or taking the car for $11,500.

I found a car I really like to replace it, but it's currently a 10-12 week lead time from the factory with no dealer stock.

My question is if I take the $11,000, how long will the insurance company give me to hang on to the car? Do I have to let them take it right away? Will they work with me for a few months until the new car is ready? With little kids, it would be hard to be down a car for 3 months.

I'd rather no go through the hassle of trying to sell the Rav with a salvage title.

Car written off but I have to pay?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2019 06:37 AM PDT

Hi there hope I am on the right forum but here is the story. So in February I needed a car quickly as I had come back from university because my mother was sick and needed transport to the hospital. So I bought a Renault Clio with 12 months MOT on it for 800 pounds. In hindsight this was a little expensive but I needed something quick. When my mother was better I returned to university and left the car safely at my girlfriend's house. Unfortunately the scumbag who sold me the car forgot to mention the severe leaks that affected the car and due to heavy rainfall the electrics ended up being ruined. So I phoned my insurance a few days ago and they said they don't think the car is worth fixing and it's a write off. The guy on the phone explained how they would take my excess off the market value of my car and pay whatever remained and then the car would be collected. I was also told I can switch a new vehicle onto my existing policy although I may have to pay slightly more if it's a bigger engine or more valuable car which I understood. Today I rang up as I hadn't heard from them in a few days and was told a completely different story. Firstly I was told my claim is invalid because the market value of my car is 430 pounds and my excess is 600 which is complete bullshit my car is worth at least 800-1200 pounds market value which I have researched! I was also told if I want to switch a new vehicle onto my policy I have to pay off the remaining months I have not yet payed for In one sum (814 pounds) I pay insurance monthly so my car breaks and not only am i not getting any money I now have to pay THEM 800 pounds. Surely this can't be right? The whole point of insurance is to be paid for damage to your vehicle especially fully comprehensive! What should my next actions be? Thank you for taking the time to read !!
