Please enjoy the story of my (miserably-failed) first attempt at talking to a girl at a party about my auditing job

    Posted: 14 Apr 2019 02:16 PM PDT

So I was chatting it up with a cute girl at my friend's apartment after we've both had a few drinks. We get to the point where she asks me what I'm studying/ going to do for a living. My drunken self tried explaining auditing in a way that's understandable to the average person, which came out as "I help form an opinion on whether a company's financial statements are shitty or not. So if they claim 'I'm great' but they're actually shitty, it's my job to say 'that's bullshit, you suck".

I thought I did a decent job of putting it into simple and at least sorta-funny phrasing. Her only comment was "wow.. that sounds pretty boring".

Needless to say, I changed the subject to questions about herself pretty quickly. It also goes without saying that we didn't go any further than chatting.

Hope you enjoyed my story - feel free to point fingers and laugh at your fallen fellow (soon-to-be) auditor!

[Question] What is the journal entry (financial accountong) to record exchange of inventory for other inventory?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2019 07:00 PM PDT

EX: Let's say I have some inventory for sale and I manage to trade it for other inventory that currently has a higher market price. How do I account for this in my general ledger?

This entry would affect the calculation of inventory turnover, and I just feel like there should be some entry to accurately account for inventory flow.

I'm a student, not actually accounting for a 'real' business.

If you have the Becker Bundle, ask to be upgraded to unlimited

    Posted: 14 Apr 2019 07:14 AM PDT

I was chatting with a friend the other day, when she mentioned she was automatically upgraded to the Becker Unlimited despite having had Becker for a few months. Naturally, I thought "What about me?" I've had Becker since summer 2018, a bit longer than she had hers.

Well, I emailed customer service at the end of last week and today I received an email upgrading me to unlimited! This is a relief as my testing window based on when I passed my first exam ends a few months after the Becker subscription was supposed to and my firm wasn't exactly going to shell out for a new subscription.

TL;DR Anywho, moral of the story, if you have the Becker Bundle (that is, all four parts, flashcards, and the final review) talk to customer support and ask them nicely for an upgrade since your "friend" got theirs upgraded automatically! Not sure it'll work for anyone who has had it longer than me but it's worth a shot!

    Internship renege

    Posted: 14 Apr 2019 07:59 AM PDT

So, during fall recruiting I interviewed a ton, wanted to get a public accounting offer, but was offered a industry summer internship at a F500 company. Got the offer in late October. Pay wasn't great, but was the best offer I had for summer. I accepted. Then, a few weeks ago a small regional firm I interviewed with twice during fall recruiting, contacted me about summer. It's public accounting, which I wanted, and it's a 40% pay increase, and its 4 weeks longer working during the summer. The earnings difference in total is significant.

I accepted the new offer and immediately contacted and declined the industry position I had previously accepted. It was more than 7 weeks before I was expected to start, and I declined via email, but without much detail as to why. My career services office contacted and browbeat me about the damage to my and their reputation, and threatened what might happen when other firms find out.

I'm a high GPA (3.8+) student at a "directional" university that gets little attention from Big 4 but lots of active recruitment from mid size or regionals. Fairly large metropolitan midwest area. I finish my BBA soon, and have only 3 credit hours after needed to reach my 150.

Should I not have switched to my new offer? Did I truly damage my repuation by accepting a new offer? Not sure that the proper way to deal with this was.

    Thanks for any advice.

    First Accounting Interview

    Posted: 14 Apr 2019 03:21 PM PDT

So like the title says, i have a job interview tomorrow for a staff internal auditor. This is my first career job interview, i graduate in less than a month. I'm technically graduating with a Finance degree but the company says they'll take Finance or Accounting and i honestly don't care what kind of job i have as long as i don't absolutely hate it and make enough money to do what i want in life, like travel/have a family/etc.

The only thing is i don't know a lot about auditing and i'm nervous that it might hurt my chances, despite them saying a Finance degree is acceptable. Can anyone give me a quick rundown of what an Internal Staff Auditor would do? It's for a media broadcasting company. Thank you!!

I want to work for a big 4 firm...

    Posted: 14 Apr 2019 05:47 PM PDT

I am a 2016 graduate with a bs in accounting and minor in business administration. I graduated with a 3.4 gpa and 161 credits.

Currently, I am studying for the CPA exam and working in AP for a public utility company.

What's the best way to get in in my situation? I've been pounding them with applications for audit positions, but my email inbox is basically a dumping ground for "we regret to inform you..." emails.

    Any advice?

    I haven't worked in 12 years

    Posted: 14 Apr 2019 05:30 PM PDT

I posted this on r/jobs and was told that maybe I should cross-post here

I am a singe father of 2 boys and for the past 12 years I have been playing poker for a living. Playing poker has been good for a long time. I made enough to have a decent living, worked only when my kids were napping, at school, or sleeping at night. I currently have about 2 years of living expenses saved up.

Now that my kids are grown up I want to re-enter the workforce but I'm assuming this 12 year gap is going to be a major hindrance. The only things I have done during these 12 years was graduate with a B.comm Degree, double majoring in Insurance and Accounting, and being a volunteer student body representative. I graduated 2 years ago and had a high GPA, 3.7, but did not do anything with it afterwards.

My resume consists only of my schooling, my volunteer work at university, and a call center job I held for 2 years more than 12 years ago. I have yet to receive any responses from all the resumes I have sent out. My friend, who is a CPA Accountant, says that I'm pretty much unemployable at this point in my life and that it's almost impossible for me to ever complete a CPA now.

I don't regret the last 12 years playing poker as it allowed me to spend so much time with my boys. I got to be there watching them take their first steps, be home with them after they were done school, and being there at all their hockey games. But now I'm wondering if my friend is correct, am I unemployable?

Which of the B4 tend to do conversational interviews instead of behavioral interviews for intern/associate hires?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2019 03:25 PM PDT

I have heard mixed things from interns having to do behavioral interviews to associates just needing to hold a conversation some of the partners/managers.

is a Summary section on a resume as a non-exp candidate beneficial?

just curious. Most of the resumes I see on here that are new grads or people in school do not have a summary.

    2020 Tax Preparer Question

I am looking to prepare taxes in my spare time next year, but I'm curious if I will need a tax preparer software if I become an authorized e-filing provider or can I file for "free" directly through IRS?

Unassigned and being pressured to take leave - what should I do?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2019 05:50 PM PDT

I am currently on probation at an accounting firm. One particular week is approaching that has a few holidays, leaving only 3 working days. In that week, I will be unassigned, and my Manager is pushing for me to take a few days leave.

Obviously I don't intend to sit around and do nothing during this time, but rather plan to ask around for work and keep busy - however as my time isn't chargable the firm is "encouraging" I and others in my situation to take the time off.

If I am to take leave I will go into the negatives, as I have barely accrued any having just started. Further, I was hoping to accrue my leave to go on a vacation in the future and a few days is quite a lot to take.

When I say encouraging, there is a real pressure for unassigned employees to take leave during this time, so much that I feel I'm almost being bullied into it. I plan on pushing back, however as I'm on probabtion I'm not sure if this will affect my relationship with my manager, the firm and ultimately jeprodize my chances of passing probabtion.

Anyway, to summarise I'm being pressured to take leave, something I don't want to do, and feel I don't have much of a leg to stand on regarding any attempts to push back as I'm still on probation.

    What should I do?

How long does it typically take to become a manager?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2019 04:52 AM PDT

My current regional firm has the structure:

Staff: 2-2.5 years Senior: 2-3 years Supervisor: 1-3 years

So in theory, it could take 8ish years to become a manager. What's the industry standard?
