What are the restrooms like at your public firms?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 10:21 AM PDT

I finally sit here today on the most popular seat in the office. I've been checking in on the restrooms here on my last day of notice at this shitty public firm for two hours in order to get a reservation.

This office has 300 people and only two restrooms with only two shitters in them each (one constantly out of service). The bathrooms up front are definitely not for use by staff as they are "client & partner" restrooms only. This leaves about 140 men limited to 1 commode when auditors are in the office on days like today.

What the actual fuck. This is something I'm seriously going to bitch about in my exit meeting.

The job in industry I start at on Monday has shitters everywhere! It's like every 10 feet there's a restroom. It's almost like a mad man with violent diarrhea designed the place. I can't wait.

What are your facilities like? I had to go the tax route because my nervous stomach doesn't travel well and I require a consistent pooper.

Got fired before tax deadline from a local firm - completely blindsided

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 07:06 PM PDT

Two years ago I quit Big 4 tax to focus on passing the CPA exams. My Big 4 experience was tumultuous and I even changed firms and just faced a lot of bad luck. After passing the CPA exams (took me 18 months total because I had a baby in between), I thought I might give accounting one more chance. I joined a small local firm part-time and I thought I was doing well. Until today, the partner took me aside and told me that the manager I was working with felt uncomfortable working with me and today was my last day, completely blindsiding me.

My tax season: I mostly did 1040s this season using Drake software and the manager checked my work, got one or two data entries wrong but mostly good/clean returns. Maybe I should've looked at prior year's return on a couple of occasions but nothing grossly negligent.

I could just remember couple of instances where I read charitable contributions wrong because the client provided two statements with different amounts and I added it together.

Another instance where I put amount mortgage interest in the place of real estate taxes. Or input the number in the wrong area, but nothing that was too crazy.

There were instances that the manager wanted me to speak to clients. I personally did not feel comfortable with it basically for positions they were taking and not properly verifying with clients.

    1. They had a client who had S-Corp issue a 1099 to himself for renting his personal vehicle and we put it in as Schedule E and put the car as "rental equipment". We took the car payments and depreciation as expenses plus mileage. The client was requesting for a loan for something and the bank called to ask what the the Schedule E rental income was since it was something that didn't look right. I didn't feel comfortable talking about it since it wasn't a position that I've seen or something that I felt confident talking about. I hinted to my manager that I didn't feel comfortable but she insisted that I talk to them. The call didn't go so well. From then on, she didn't let me talk to any more clients.
    2. If the client had a Schedule C or Schedule E, we didn't verify expenses if they didn't provide anything, we just took the same expenses as last year but changed the numbers a little bit. It felt bizarre to me that we didn't verify but I didn't complain and did whatever she told me to do because it wasn't my name being signed off on the tax return.
    3. Couple of instances where client had a dependent who was over 18 and didn't specify if they were going to school or claiming them in the current year. I wanted to make sure they were a dependents.

I have done 1040s before on bigger clients and certain areas were just new to me. Overall I didn't think I was bad to a point where an individual would feel uncomfortable working with me. It just made me feel like maybe there were murkier positions which they didn't feel disclosing to me, idk.

I was thinking about quitting anyways because I didn't want to do the shady kind of taxes they were doing but I find myself at a loss. I didn't think I did anything that would require me to be fired. Maybe this is a sign from the world that accounting/taxes is not for me.

Man, can i get some internet solidarity with you guys? I'm freaking the fuck out. Im easily over 150 hours of study time now. Becker mocks keep coming back to me in the 60's. Losing my sanity a bit and chugging ciggies. Seriously hoping I get to join the May score release upvote party.

Poor performance review at B4. How screwed am I?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 03:11 PM PDT

I started a few months ago and got a pretty terrible review. My performance is "unsatisfactory" for the majority of the categories.

I came from industry where I was earning more and working strictly 40 hours per week. Most of the time, I got my work done at 2pm and would chill for the remaining 2 hours. My boss/coworkers would call me "ridiculous" for occasionally staying past 6pm. Now I'm being rated low for not being a team player by staying past midnight.

I came in as a non traditional hire and have had a lot going on (personally) since I started. I'm also not meshing well with my team, which has been a huge issue. I'm pretty sure the guy I report to hates me.

I'm also taking the CFA Level 2 exam in two months. On top of that, I've signed up for the CPA exams. I'm trying to do everything and doing nothing well.

    Help.

Switching from tax firm to IRS?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 05:21 PM PDT

Has anyone here went from working at a tax firm to working at the IRS (as a revenue agent or something)? The IRS has an opening I'm thinking of applying for, and I want to hear from people who made the switch. What's the work like? How does auditing returns compare to preparing them?

Mid Tier Selection (BDO, CLA, Crowe)

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 05:06 PM PDT

Just based on prestige which firm would you go with out of BDO, CLA, and Crowe. In process of selection and want to see people's thoughts on the firm as a whole.

Edit: These are the only firms I even have a chance with. I see that the consensus seems to be with BDO. Thank you for the replies.
