Fed up with the industry I sell in. Sales and Selling

Fed up with the industry I sell in.

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 07:13 AM PDT

Hi guys, first time poster. So I've worked in sales for the last 5 years. I started in telesales whilst studying, booking appointments for solar. Moved up within that company to team leader in the telesales team with a brief stint of door canvassing. Once I graduated I went to a big corporate firm selling automation to manufacturers.

My current average order value is around £40k and am constantly overachieving. The last two quarters I have finished top of the leaderboard out of around 100 sales guys. Generating around 500k profit per quarter.

Now I just recently got a promotion after 3 years, including bonuses and perks my package is currently around £75k at 27 years old it's not too bad compared to my peers. I can live with it especially as I only work 3 days a week now. (Shit bonus scheme, capped so if I finish top on the leaderboard I get a first place bonus whether I bring in 10k or 100k more than position two it doesn't matter so no incentive to over work myself and get burnt out)

I've had colleagues leave to go for better basics but turns out the grass isn't greener, worse company car, worse products, worse leads, more hours etc.

I studied software engineering but didn't get a brilliant grade (hated it) and have an interest in finance but limited experience in that field to a summer work experience placement about 10 years ago.

I wondered if you guys have any recommendations for me. Is it worth someone like me trying to get into financial software sales? Like trading platforms, if so any tips on the industry how I can prepare for interviews etc?

Or do you think I should stay in the same industry and go to a competitor? I get approached frequently with offers of a much better basic but I'm kind of bored of the industry and I currently sell best in class equipment which would be hard to compete with.

Or do I stay where I am and use my spare time to focus on setting up my own business? I'm a bit skeptical about this though as I already have had a few failed business that I've learnt from but also lost investment. Third time lucky though?

Forgot to mention I work for a Japanese company and I'm British. You can only go so far up the ladder without being Japanese in this company.

Basically I'm bored and want more money, any advice from veteran sales guys?

Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss is recommended a lot here, for good reason. I highly recommend it as well. It has changed how I navigate conversations.

Because it's always recommended, wanted to give y'all a heads up it's only $5.00 on audible for the next 3 days.

Pick up the damn phone and dial

    Posted: 27 Mar 2019 02:48 PM PDT

Cranky old sales guy here to bitch about my pet peeve.

I see a ton of posts on here about cold emails and follow-up emails and the like. If you want to get a response, pick up the damn phone and call your prospects.

My role is somewhat unique because while I handle all sales and marketing for a VAR, I also determine which products are in our portfolio. Because of this, I get between 15-20 cold emails per week asking me to review their products and services. Of those emails, maybe one or two will bother to follow up their email with a call.

Guess what ... out of all of those emails, I only agree to product pitches from the sales reps who take the effort to call.

Don't expect your prospects to spend their time reading your email and reviewing your website. Your job is to make a compelling case why they should buy from you, so do some research on your prospects and let them know how your product or service can benefit their business. If you call and tell me your product can save me time or increase my profit margin, I'm down to spending 15-30 minutes on a webinar. If you just email me, I assume you sent the same stupid templated email to a bunch of other prospects without doing any research.

Anyway, rant over. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 09:25 AM PDT

Hello! I have about 5 years of sales experience at a cell phone retailer and electronics store. I am currently interviewing for a very high commission sales job. What are some questions that I should be asking during my interview about commission structure and things similar? Any help would be amazing!

    Strategic Account Manager Compensation

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 10:52 AM PDT

I am currently working as an Enterprise Account Manager for a perpetual software/hardware and software company with a $175k OTE. Our company was recently merged with a competitor and I am not sure the culture is going to be a good fit moving forward. I was approached by a recruiter of a Hardware company with an extensive SaaS offering in the IoT world that is in an incredibly interesting industry that aligns directly with my past experience. The company is looking for a regional Key Enterprise Account Manager, the req says multi million customers and they have some large logos on their website.

Does a strategic account manager warrant the same compensation as an Enterprise Account Executive. While my future is uncertain with my current company I would really only make the move if the money is there. In the SaaS world, do Key Enterprise Account Managers bring in the $250k ($125k/$125k) comp range? The recruiter told me my past work experience through my last 3 jobs is one of the most perfect matches she has ever seen and said I could most likely name my price. I want to ask for the $250k but want to make sure that I am playing the same game.

None of the companies I've worked for in the past have had a KAM or Strategic AM so I don't have anything to base where their comp falls.

    Is this LinkedIn offer legit?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 05:23 AM PDT

I have received three or four of these in the last couple days from companies offering consulting services to a client. Are these types opportunities legitimate?

    The message is as follows:

    Hi (My Name),

I hope this finds you well. I work for a company called Guidepoint, where we specialise in connecting our clients with industry experts. I'm currently working with one of our investment clients who is urgently looking to gain a general understanding of the [INDUSTRY]. They have therefore specifically asked to speak with someone that has previously had a [Former Job] at one of the major players in the industry and therefore I have reached out to you as someone that would be great for them to speak with.

You're background truly is exactly the type of profile that the client would love to speak with so it would be fantastic to have you on board for this project. Guidepoint would pay you for your services at an hourly rate you can set yourself and the call will last approximately 1 hour. I would be more than happy to give you a quick call to discuss the project. If you are interested, is there a best number to contact you on? Alternatively, if you are interested and would like to find out more, below I have attached a link that will allow you to sign up as an advisor on our network, set your hourly consulting rate, review the screening questions and then accept or decline the project:

Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions. Thank you in advance for your time and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

    Best Regards,

    [His Name]

Any UK salespeople on here earning 6 figure salaries?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 10:11 AM PDT

I always see people boasting on this page, 50k Base salaries and 100k earning potential, most of them from the states. I work in the UK and have a fairly decent salary, 22k basic and I pick up around 45k a year in total with commission. Looking for something bigger though, I've never missed a quarter but I've reached my realistic cap at this job. I work in telesales cold and warm calling.

    [rant] Stop emailing proposals!

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 06:38 AM PDT

Salespeople spend all this time in meetings with a prospect, they spend hours putting together the proposal....and then they throw it all away & email it over.

What do you think they do when you email it over? You guessed it - the first page they go to is the last page - price. Then they work backward.

Even if it's five minutes you have to talk them through the story. Then and only then you can send it. You have to breathe life into the how and why. How many emails do you get that you misinterpret? Now imagine getting a proposal for something you never bought before and how clear that is. Stop sabotaging your deals at the finish line.

Pick up phone and spend five stupid minutes to walk them through it. You already spent four hours on calls and prep...

What are your favorite prospecting tools?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 12:10 PM PDT

    Hey Fellow Sales People,

My sales team has grown and we've added about three new reps just in the last six months. A common complaint among both new and veteran sales people is the difficulty to generate new prospects.

We have had Data.com the SalesForce product, but we all know that the contacts on there are old and usually incorrect. My reps have done a great job with boot strapped solutions like pulling an email format from Data.com then cross referencing LinkedIn to create an organic contact. This is what we've been doing for a long time but it's starting to fizzle out as our LinkedIn networks have grown.

I'm evaluating ZoomInfo and LinkedIn Sales Navigator but will likely have to choose between the two. Anyone have an opinion between these two?
I like the idea of LinkedIn Sales Navigator as my people already utilize LinkedIn on a daily basis. If they treat ZoomInfo like they did Data.com it will most likely be a waste of money.
Also, are there any others worth checking out that may not be on my radar?
D&B was checked but we work in a contact specific industry.

Just a little background, we sell B2B services to contacts not accounts. The title we search is huge. We're talking 300,000 of them in the U.S. Our database is about 60K now.

What are the best books for B2C Sales?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 06:08 AM PDT

What are the best books and articles on how to sell to an individual consumer?

I'm talking about those sales reps who are trying to sell more...

    • TVs at Best Buy
    • Cars at the local dealership
    • Refrigerators at the appliance store

High price tag items that require a person to think about their investment before they make a big decision; how do you get good at selling them on that?

    Thanks!

Note: I work in B2B but have a few friends in the B2C space who I'm trying to help out. Thank you.

1099 Sales Rep for Multiple Companies

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 08:14 AM PDT

So I have a few small startups in different industries looking at me as a sales rep for their growth and I'm curious if anyone has experience in working multiple sales jobs at once. Is it possible to take on both sales positions by being 1099 and balancing the two? I'm thinking you can start an LLC as "Portal Consultants" or something and have them both commit to allowing this as long as performance is kept up (or don't even bring it up to either). Anyone know of models like this?

How to approach enterprise sales based on a job posting?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 11:58 AM PDT

I came across a job posting from a very large company (10,000+ employees) and they are looking for multiple people that our product could completely replace ("just use our software, no need to hire an entire team and spend 3 years re-inventing the wheel").

Their specific team is huge with no clear leader/manager for the project, and we don't have meaningful connections within the company. We are a small startup of 8 people, but our product can really help them with real value props. How would you penetrate the company to start a conversation?

A competitor called me and pretended to be an interested customer in order to extract pricing information - is this ethical?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 11:55 AM PDT

I work in outside ISP sales and I received a call a call a few days ago from a seemingly interested tenant. There were a few things I found odd about the conversation, but I didn't think twice about sending a quote following the call. I thought about how strange the conversation was today so I googled the persons name to find out she was a rep for a competing vendor.

I sent her an email and called her out for the unprofessional behavior and she responded that her true intention was to find a referral partner within my company and that I didn't pass the test. Even if that were the truth and she wasn't just trying to save face, in my experience beginning a referral relationship with dishonesty, does not usually result in a very good partnership.

Now I'm sitting here on the second to last day of the questioning the ethics of her actions and whether I am valid in believing it is wrong. What do you guys think? Has anyone else come across this?

    SDR: Alteryx or SolarWinds competitor

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 11:50 AM PDT

I'm trying to decide between the two.

Does anybody have experience working for Alteryx or selling a network monitoring tool?

Similar deal sizes and OTE. Growth potential as far as target market looks to be larger at Alteryx. Their product seems to be pretty top notch.

The competitor is a small company and I would be part of a team of ~5 sales people vs Alteryx being fairly large.

    Thanks.

Advice needed for my first sales job out of college

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 11:46 AM PDT

    Here is my situation:

I am 21 years old, about to graduate in May

I am seeking my first full time job in the Midwest (aiming for SaaS or anything in tech really)

I have been 3/3 on my interviews so far, but I recently received my best offer yet

The offer I am contemplating includes $38k base pay, $80k OTE, 5 PTO vacation days, 12 holidays.

Is this a decent offer for my first job out of school? After talking with the company, I have been told that after 2-3 years I could be making $150k OTE with better benefits.

    Thanks!

Buyers who want to pay less because they have to travel

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 08:56 AM PDT

I'm selling on a site like craigslist where the buyer meets you in person (rather than posting it), and sometimes I get people who make an excuse that since they'd travel they offer lower - what's a good way to say no to this without insulting them so that they won't be put off buying it so that they may increase their offer

What's a good worded way to tell a potential buyer you won't sell it to them for less just because they have to travel to you to buy it , without putting them off buying it

BDRs / SDRs / high volume outbounders- how do you organize? CRM? Spreadsheet? Both?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 07:26 AM PDT

Obviously the org wants you to live out of the CRM, but spreadsheets are easier to manipulate. What do you use in your day to day for tracking leads/prospects until they get to the opportunity stage?

Discuss! Be sure to mention what you do and how you do it.

Need advice on beginner sales job

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 03:36 AM PDT

I'm 19 with no sales job experience, I have past job experience and sell clothes/shoes and other thing on the internetfor extra cash I've gotten really good at sales and knowing the value of something. I'm also good at networking and marketing. I'm very good with people and can control situations. I like to think of myself as a leader and have always been an entrepreneur in some way. But I'd really like to get my foot in the door with a good sales job, I graduated high school but past that I have no education. Recently my freind got a job at Verizon and makes 15$ an hour plus 10% commission which sounds pretty good to me. I've applied online but haven't heard anything yet. I plan on walking in and asking for the manager to follow up on my application and show my interest in the job. But if that doesn't work out what other sales job would be good for me right now? I don't got to school and my schedule is clear, so I'm looking for full time.

    Banned from LinkedIn?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 02:41 AM PDT

Hello guys. I'm working as a sale manager, and using LinkedIn to generate leads. Here is my fear. To be banned.

Some of colleagues say that system will can ban me if I use LinkedIn from different devices and places. I live in a big city, and have two different providers of internet at home/work. Also no one can understand how does the ban system works at all.

Can here be too many invites, or something like that? Or matters only this button who people can press "I don't know him" or "This is spam"?

What should I do to avoid this?
