Daily advice thread. All questions about your personal situation should be asked here

    Posted: 27 Mar 2019 05:15 AM PDT

If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or other "advice for my personal situation" questions. If you are going to ask how to invest you should include relevant information, such as the following:

    • How old are you?
    • Are you employed/making income? How much?
    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive significant other?
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?
    • Any big debts?
    • Any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

Be aware that these answers are just opinions of Redditors and should be used as a starting point for your research. You should strongly consider seeing a registered financial rep before making any financial decisions!

Mcdonald's buys Dynamic Yield for $300 million

    Posted: 27 Mar 2019 07:51 AM PDT

    Article: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-dynamicyield-m-a-mcdonald-s-corp/mcdonalds-to-buy-israels-dynamic-yield-idUSKCN1R62Q4

"McDonald's said it would use Dynamic Yield's technology to change its digital Drive Thru menu displays to show food based on the time of day, weather, current restaurant traffic and trending menu items. "

It's not mentioned in the article but they will not be stopping contracts with any companies that Dynamic Yield have, and they have no plans to stop them. I imagine they might eventually pull it from immediate rivals, although maybe if Burger King (for example) were to use the McD's would know exactly what people were ordering there?

I think the big metric to watch to see how well this works is average ticket price. The goal doesn't seem to be to drive more customers, but instead to get each customer to spend a few dollars more each trip.

Anecdotal, but people feel more comfortable adding glutanous things to an order when they don't have to ask for it for other people to hear. If it's twenty cents to add a slice of extra cheese to a cheese burger maybe or extra sauces etc. maybe people will add more of these

    Portfolio Analysis Tracking

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 03:31 AM PDT

    Hello,

Here's what I'm looking for; I want to get an Excel spreadsheet setup that automatically updated various parts of my portfolio.

I.e. I can open the document and it will show the values of my stocks (p/e, PEG, p/b, etc), funds (list of their updated holdings), any links to current news about any of my stocks, current CAGR/total return/return (1/3/5 year), total risk of portfolio, diversification of holdings in the form of pie charts and such, etc you get the picture.

Everytime I open it will update itself with the latest available information (which means it will have to pull it from a database or from websites HTML code?)

I'm asking if; Is this possible? Is there a program available? Excel templates of what someone has done of this before?

If it's possible and no one's done it before then do I need another coding language to accomplish this?

    Kind regards, Cookhouse

    Investing in shopify stores

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 02:43 AM PDT

    Hi all,

Undtraditional, I know... but I wonder if you anyone here has thoughts about this, or ideas similiar.

I have come across online platforms that sell already running Shopify stores. I'm interested in investing in these, kind of like Realestate. Buy a few, use the profits to buy the next, etc...

I was wondering if anyone had experience with buying already created Shopify stores... What was your experience and thoughts? Thanks!

Best Diversifier vs Large Cap Equity ETF

    Posted: 27 Mar 2019 10:44 PM PDT

With many calling a recession in the coming year or 2, does anyone recommend a good instrument to round out the low cost equity ETFs that many seem to recommend on this sub?

My target is 80% Equities etfs / 10% Treasury Bonds ETFs / 10% REITs

With all the fancy instruments created in the last few years, could anyone recommend any other better diversifiers than these (when compared to large cap equities )? The options I listed are nothing fancy and have been around for decades, but I've yet to see any new products that beat these old fashioned portfolio components.

is it a good timing for fed to shrink 10 yr treasury holding in portfolio?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 01:57 AM PDT

Since 10yr/3month treasury yield inversion and 10 yr yield lower low, why don't fed just shrink their balance sheet by selling 10 yr treasure?

I know the way the fed shrinks the holding by NOT renewal the holding when it mature.

There must be a way for fed to supply more 10 yr treasure into market, which looks like a win-win to me, becoz the inversion makes investors in the

    market so worry.

    am I missing anything? 📷

Difference between Schwab One and Schwab Checking?

    Posted: 27 Mar 2019 08:50 PM PDT

    According to here:

    https://www.schwab.com/public/schwab/investing/accounts_products/investment/cash_solutions

They just about have the same features, check writing, free ATM, FDIC insured etc. They seem redundant, especially considering one needs to open the Schwab One account to be eligible for the checking account anyway.

What am I missing? If I have to open a Schwab One account anyway why not just use that as my checking account and not bother with a second redundant account?

    Volatility product suggestion?

    Posted: 27 Mar 2019 05:38 PM PDT

As some of you might have read my posts in the past, one of them being https://www.reddit.com/r/tradeSVXY/comments/7vpona/jxott_the_man_who_cried_wolf_and_was_right/.

Since XIV is gone, and SVXY volatility is reduced by 50%, there seems no more great volatility investment vehicle like XIV on the market any more. I've researched and couldn't find any.

So now I'm investing in TQQQ with my signal (xivinvestment.com), it still makes good return, but I really missed XIV. Any of you guys have any volatility product in mind that can comparable as XIV? Shorting TVIX is also a good way, but it's a bit too risky, might try with small amount on that using opposite of my signal.

So any one can share your information of suitable long volatility product?

To those who invest in both rental properties and index funds:

    Posted: 27 Mar 2019 01:25 PM PDT

Do you put away money for taxes every month from your rental income? Or do you invest the money instead, hoping that the markets do well (or take your tax deduction if the markets go down), and then cash out what you owe in taxes end of the (tax) year?

Any interesting case studies on companies/investing?

    Posted: 27 Mar 2019 10:52 PM PDT

I was hoping to learn more about company profitability and investing by reading some interesting case studies about pivotal moments that helped make or break companies. I've heard the story of Enron so many times, but was hoping to learn about more real life examples where certain decisions had big impacts. Any ideas?

    HSA general questions

    Posted: 27 Mar 2019 01:15 PM PDT

(Not sure if this is the best thread for this, but since HSAs get used with investing, and there is some overlap, I figured I would give it a shot. )

What is the best way to optimize and use a HSA account? It seems the best way is just max it at the end of the year, get the deduction, then pull it back out, and use the money in other investments. Currently my work does a flat contribution, that does not matter if I contribute or not, so it seems like the best to keep in what I may need for health payments, and take out the rest, and just make sure to max it out at the end of the year.

Is now a good time to pay down loans?

    Posted: 27 Mar 2019 07:40 AM PDT

I have a car loan and student loans each with around 6.5% APR.

I'm thinking with such a flat and uncertain market it might be a good time time to put some nice payments on the loans instead of into the market.
