QUESTION: Why is the PCAOB organized as a non-profit private company, rather than a function within the SEC itself?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2019 06:47 PM PST

I know PCAOB officers are appointed by the SEC, but why aren't they consolidated with the SEC and appointed by the president? With the public interest that the PCAOB serves, shouldn't it be consolidated?

Is it true that PwC in Canada doesn't look at your grades at all?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2019 03:27 PM PST

I've been hearing from upper year students that PwC canada no longer looks at your grades. They evaluate you base on fit instead.

Is this true? Kinda sucks to hear because I've been putting in a lot of effort to keep my GPA up. I'm in Vancouver.

edit: And what do they mean when they say "being a good fit"? Do you have to have a certain type of personality? be outgoing?

    REPRESENT

    Posted: 02 Mar 2019 02:18 PM PST

my manager just went on a vacation a couple of days ago. my life as an intern has become a living hell

    Posted: 02 Mar 2019 08:14 PM PST

I was like "wow busy season isn't that bad. sure it's 70 hours a week, but I'm working at a good pace and getting a lot done and getting paid by the hour" etc etc. This was mostly because my manager was great at training me and using me most efficiently (letting me do parts of assignments that he knew I wouldn't get stuck on, or at least teaching those parts that he expected me to get stuck on)

Now he left a couple days ago and its just me, a couple of associates, and the partner. THEN WE FIND OUT HE LEFT RIGHT BEFORE A COUPLE OF BIG DEADLINES AND THE PARTNER AND ASSOCIATES ARE ALWAYS SWINGING BY MY CUBICLE ASKING "is it done yet" EVERY 30 MINS and saying stuff like "when I was an intern I only took x amount of hours to finish it". yet when I ask for help, they're too busy with their own work. I was really enjoying the busy season (lol) but now I get why everyone fkin hates it. How do I survive?

    edit: grammar

edit 2: also, I have a full time offer at a big 4 already waiting, so I don't really care about getting a full time job here, but still I want to at least learn and be a productive worker and contribute. I just feel like shit when I take hours doing something because no one is giving me the support I need

    MS - Business Analytics

    Posted: 02 Mar 2019 02:00 PM PST

Instead of going the typical BA Accounting to MS Accounting, how well equipped would I be if I chose to go for a MS Business Analytics, assuming that it gives me the CPA eligibility? I'm not sure if I'd want to stay in accounting the rest of my life (offer in audit at B4). Has anyone done or knows anyone who did their MS in BA? Any good insight on related programs?

    Thank you!

When you take your vacation. Do you tell your manager/coworkers where you are going?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2019 07:39 PM PST

For me, I tell my manager where I will be. (and he will tell me also.) The main purpose is to know when (i.e. what specific time in a specific time zone) can I be reached by e-mail/phone (text message) if necessary - or don't even bother trying to call if overseas.

It is understood that communication is supposed to be kept to a minimum. Of course not all companies out there will observe that. I admit I am guilty of this myself because I have called/e-mailed my manager on schedule issues during my vacation.

For that matter I work in industry. Your mileage may vary.

    Bereavement in busy season

    Posted: 02 Mar 2019 06:32 AM PST

My manager was expecting me in the office full time this weekend. I told him that I was coming but I learned this morning that my grandmother passed away. I called him to let him know that I'm not coming to work today.

I also want to take tomorrow off to fully recover from my loss and honestly I just want a day to myself as I've been working till midnight on weekdays and 10-7 on weekends. Do you think it is acceptable to just not go in tomorrow?

My firm (Big 4 in London) gives you 3 days of compassionate leave in the event of loss and tomorrow's Sunday so I feel like I don't even need to say anything tomorrow...

PS: I'm from abroad so can't attend the funeral. This is just for grieving.

PS2: Thanks for the responses. I emailed my manager as you recommended and his response was compassionate.

I’ve got about 0% chance of passing FAR. How can I increase that to 15% in 6 days?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2019 05:04 PM PST

So I'm taking FAR in 6 days and I haven't even gone through Becker Unit 1. I was planning on taking FAR and retaking BEC in the summer but now that I've gotten the BEC score, I would love to be able to get FAR out of the way too. I know it's too late but I just wasn't able to get myself to study after taking the last one. What can I do in 6 days for a miracle?

    Life After IT Audit?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2019 08:35 AM PST

Hi former IT Auditors, I wanted to ask about your life after IT auditing. Did your experience give you a lot of transferable skills to work in other areas inside and outside of accounting? Thanks for sharing. I am not 100% sold on doing a CIA or CISA either.
