    Insurance and Medical Privacy?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 01:40 AM PST

Some background: Over 18, living in California, on my parents insurance plan still, haven't been to the doctor in ages even though my family has. I'm going to the doctor for panic attacks. For various reasons I want this kept a secret from my family but I don't know if its possible. Can I see a doctor and have help on the payments through insurance without my family knowing? What if I went to a doctor and didn't use insurance.. As in, not even telling them I have insurance and paying out of pocket? Please help me out here I'm so lost on how to do all this privately.

debate blood work result accuracy for term life insurance with AIG

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 12:16 PM PST

I signed up for term life insurance through AIG. As part of the process I went through a health check where they took my blood. The result came back that my LDL was high so I had a higher rate but I signed up.

About 2 weeks later I got a full physical with my doctor and those results showed my LDL to be a lot lower. This makes me think that the results AIG got were wrong/incorrect somehow because LDL is pretty constant and doesn't change so much in a short time-span.

I spoke to AIG and they said all they can do is average the two which keeps me at the higher rate. This seems wrong to me. If their results are wrong then they should ignore them.

Is there anything I can do? I read the contracts/agreements but I'm no expert and thought I would ask the smart folks here. Is there someway to dispute the accuracy of their results to get them to either re-take or discard their wrong results?

    US-CA $50k patient responsibility

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 12:40 AM PST

Hi /r/Insurance - have I got what I think will be a doozy.

In September 2017 I (25 at the time) had a surgery on my right foot performed. I had already had the same surgery on my left foot when I lived in AZ (when I was 23) performed by a different doctor. My insurance for both surgeries was through Aetna through CVS/Caremark (though I no longer have the policy info/card since I'm no longer covered) as I was under the age of 26.

When I moved out to California (in March of 2017, still 25 and covered by my parents' insurance) I started a new job and picked up an HMO insurance policy through CA Blue Shield that I never ended up being able to use due to it being an HMO and all. I figured since I literally never used it and I was covered through Aetna (via my parents) that I would worry about swapping to a PPO when the enrollment period came around (since I would turn 26 in Jan anyway) and literally forgot about it. I told all of this to my foot surgeon as they were unable to ever bill my HMO plan because I didn't have a PCP and therefore no referral but Aetna happily paid for all appointments associated with pre and post op.

My surgery was properly billed to Aetna and I paid my out of pocket (we had hit our max as a family already anyway) and I recovered totally fine.

In November 2018 (so more than 1 year after the surgery) I got a call from the surgery center saying that Aetna was requesting a refund to pay my claim due to my carrying multiple insurances. They said that if they had tried to bill CA Blue Shield first and they denied it (which they would have, because HMO) then Aetna would have had no problem paying the claim. But the surgery center didn't do that and that they no longer could because it had been more than a year since the initial surgery. My options are limited here because I was never a policyholder and I don't have very much info about my Aetna policy anymore.

I just received a bill today (Jan 2019) for $50k patient responsibility from CA Blue Shield. I would have literally never had this surgery done if it was going to cost $50k (it was for an advanced plantar fasciitis treatment - excruciating pain and excellent results but not worth $50k) What's my next step?

Do I have to rebuild a house that's a total loss or can I just pay off the mortgage and keep the rest?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 07:56 PM PST

Ok so this is totally hypothetical, no such terrible calamity has befallen us yet. But we just got a new car and of course updated our insurance and all that. And it got me thinking, if our house was to say burn down and be a total loss, could we just pay off the mortgage with the insurance money and use the rest to buy elsewhere? Obviously we could do that if we owned the home free and clear, but how does having a mortgage play into it?

States are Illinois and Indiana as I'm sure that will affect any answers.

    Health insurance coverage, dual insurance

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 03:43 PM PST

My wife and myself are in a position where we both are getting health insurance benefits on the same month.

My insurance - Cadillac coverage through a city government plan

    Her insurance- unknown

My wife thinks it's a good idea for us both to get insurance (I would cover her as a dependent under my plan) so she has more thorough coverage.

The tricky part that I'm trying to judge is this-

If she has a claim denied for medication (xeljanz, very pricy, has been denied numerous times in the past) through her insurer would a claim be presented to my insurance for coverage or would she have to fight her insurer for benefits?

Hopefully someone has experience in this situation and can help me out. Thanks if you can.

T boned in my neighborhood, other driver doesn't have insurance

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 05:06 PM PST

I was leaving my parents house and turning out and going southbound, I was going around 20 and a driver in a truck pulling out of a neighborhood on the right hit me and didn't stop until I was up on the curb on the left.

We waited around for the police, got a report and her information, and now I'm in the ER.

The police told me she doesn't have insurance. How do I go about this? My car is totaled and I absolutely need one for work.

NJ - Confused about how to file a claim - injury on HOA property

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 10:11 PM PST

My girlfriend fell and was injured on a deck owned by her HOA as a shared asset. The deck is insured through the HOA's policy (separate from her home owners insurance which only covers her unit).

The HOA president gave me a copy of their insurance policy (Traveler's) but to be honest I just don't know what to do next. Should I just call them to file a claim? Will they try to trick me to make it seem like her injuries are not so bad? Do I need a lawyer?

School address or parents address for car insurance (different states)?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 05:35 PM PST

So I'm currently going to school in GA but I'm still a resident of Missouri as that's where my parents live. "My" car is owned by my dad and registered in Missouri. We're planning on keeping it this way because I don't have much time left in school so we aren't wanting to register it to a new state only to switch it back in less than a year. The issue is my parents are way overpaying for insurance. Since I'm responsible for the insurance on this car I was to get a new plan for it. When I get car insurance do I just list my address as my permanent address (my parents?) or my address in GA even though the car is registered in a different state? Thanks

    Policy reflecting registered location

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 09:16 PM PST

This question popped into my mind the other day and I thought this would be a great place to ask. Can an automobile be insured with an address for which it is not registered. For example I live in Illinois and many of our border states have commuters that live in the cheaper taxing surrounding states (Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin) but own property in Illinois in order to have discounts on things like landowner deer tags. Is it legal to live in another border state but have the insurance policy and car registration tied to a different state? Example living in Iowa but owning a farm in Illinois and registering the car there for the lower registration fee and lower auto insurance rate? Just a shower thought for me today.

Question about home owners insurance payout

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 09:07 PM PST

I live in Northern California and my family and I sustained some smoke damage to our home during the Camp Fire. Our insurance approved replacing all of the home insulation. The attic insulation has been replaced and an estimate has been written for the insulation in the walls. After talking to the estimator and a contractor friend we are probably not going to replace the insulation in the walls. We feel like it might be overkill. We have a stucco home only 10 years old, etc.

My question is would there be an option to cash out or settle on the estimate for removing the drywall and insulation? Is that common? Since the estimate has been approved I would hate for the money to go back to the policy.

Thanks for all of your help.

    Is it worth it?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 05:03 PM PST

In January of last year, I was rear-ended by a semi --- I was cut off by another car and slowed down to avoid an accident slowing from 60mph to 40mph when the semi hit me. there was a lot of shady shit that the driver did (my dad is a semi-driver as well and obviously shed some light on it --- I'd be happy to explain it more but we'll keep it show), anyways, dude damaged my car to the tune of 6k. I had a PTSD moment and couldn't remember what happened, I did not see the semi (i know that) behind me.

anyways, that evening I was in a lot of pain and got an appointment with my primary clinic, I was given muscle relaxers (which I didn't touch because they did nothing but put me to sleep) and anti-inflammatories. and was told if the pain did not ease up to go to a chiropractor, which I did. During this time the semi driver's insurance as giving me the run around, and I made the choice to simply go through mine, I am in Minnesota and we are a no fault state fyi. it was important to me to get my car fixed, I cared about my car more than myself.

the chiropractor did do a through work up and found i had whiplash and damage to my low back. so we started treatment, after about 6 weeks i was told i needed to go to an IME , and that went as well as could be expected. the insurance company (my insurance company - geico) told me treatment was finished. and they were going into arbitration with the semi drivers insurance copy. i hear back about three months after, after checking in once a month, we lost. i wasn't going to get my deductable back, which sucked. and i just left it at that.

all this time, i was experiencing pain, a lot of pain. numbness in my leg, pain in my hips which down to my knee and ankle are my main complaints.

i have a pretty high pain tolerance, but i finally said this was enough and went to a new chiropractor because i wasn't happy with the other one. they had asked if i had had any trama and i said the car accident. i am thirty now, i've worked in health care all my adult life and my back, knees or anything else have always been great. I was super proud of that.

anyways the doctor suggests getting a lawyer, i never signed anything with them, it feels like i've been cut off and the pain is still there. i don't know if it's worth it not, or if it's something i should pursue but the truth is, i've always told my insurance company, i maintained my lane, i did not see the semi behind me, i still hurt. and i do not agree with the results, i have also never been asked to sign anything.

i am not looking for some crazy win fall i just want to not hurt and get my medical bills paid for. also...i do have health insurance it's not like i couldn't seek treatment that way either.

    Demand letters and Lawsuits

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 08:34 PM PST

Hello, this is my first post so I'm sorry if my post has mistakes or if it's in the wrong sub! I was in an accident 3 weeks ago (Texas). Police came out by no report was made, even though I asked for one. They did give the other driver a citation for Failure to Yield. I filed a claim through his insurance, State Farm, but the process hasn't gone so smoothly. I can never get the adjuster on the phone and she hasn't returned messages. From what I have been able to get from other claim handlers, they're trying to get ahold of the other party. They last attempted on Dec. 27th and the next attempt in Jan. 15, not sure why the long break in between contact and they were unable to say. They put as the claims adjuster dictates the frequency and when they make contact.

They won't make a liability decision until they speak to him and I'm not a very patient person when someone is blatantly trying to screw me over. Basically my question is, can I send a demand letter before liability is determined? I have a copy of the citation and photos before our cars were moved. There were no witnesses and there's no police report.

Or can I just go forward with filing a lawsuit against the other driver? I'm not sure of what other tactics I can use to get the other driver to cooperate and to get the claims adjuster to answer/return my calls.

    Auto Insurance Advice...Progressive vs Geico

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 08:00 PM PST

I have an auto policy for $274/mo with Geico, and Progressive says I can do $189/mo... This sounds fishy. I have had 1 accident and it happened in the past six months. It is the reason my premium went from $230 to $274 with Geico, so why is Progressive offering me such a low rate? Is Progressive known to up your premium out of nowhere, or give whacky reasons to charge you more, or is this too-good-to-be-true offer REAL? Thanks for your time.

I was in a collision January 2017 and as a result I need a new bumper. I had the repair appraised by the insurer and still have the quote of the deductible. I have switched insurance companies since then. Is it too late to get it fixed? Will they still accept the insurance?

My brother was in a car accident and the insurance for the at fault party is stating they will not claim full responsibility. [CA]

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 01:37 PM PST

I originally posted this in r/legaladvice but it was suggested to post to this sub.

My brother was in a car accident where he was driving straight and an oncoming car turned left. He had the right of way but he ended up hitting her and went further left into an orchard. He had a dashcam that shows all of this. The other insurance is claiming that they will not take full responsibility as my brother didn't try and swerve out of the way after they viewed the dashcam footage. They stated they are waiting for the police report to make the final determination. They stated to him that he should file a claim with his car insurance to cover the remaining costs. My brothers car was determined to be a total loss since the damages exceeded the value. To me, this sounds incorrect. I have never heard of an insurance not claiming full responsibility for not swerving out of the way. I suggested he call his insurance to get more information, but what other steps should he take? It sounds like the other insurance isn't trying to take responsibility by making him go through his insurance, but this is his first car accident and I don't want him to be manipulated.

    Any advice is much appreciated!

Is my insurance telling the truth? (CA)

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 05:43 PM PST

Not sure if best place to post.

I was involved in an accident that I was at fault at back in May. The damage to me seemed rather minor but now told it was over 2000 dollars. I do all my own work on my cars and to me this price seems really high. I will add links to pictures below, I have tried contacting my insurance and they won't answer my question as they said they can't release information to me. I was asking about the cost of repairs, when the repair was done, and what was replaced. I hit a 2011 Toyota Prius. I did not file anything for my car as I could not tell what damage was done to mine. Also I didn't even know the other party repaired their car as I followed up with the adjuster a month after the accident and told me the other party hasn't done anything. We both have Triple A. I will include pictures of a close up as well before and after from my dashcam. I've been driving for 19 years and this is my first accident. I'm not sure if I should post this on ask/reddit. Thanks for any info and also if I should repost elsewhere.

Found out I cant add pictures so will try google drive. Let me know if this works or should I use imgur

Seeking advice for auto insurance dilemma

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 05:38 PM PST

My husband totaled my car that we had for 8 months on the interstate driving in the rain. Come to find out, our insurance company notified us that we DO NOT have collision coverage on my vehicle.

The vehicle is financed and we still owe $10,000 on it. I remember very clearly the salesman from the dealership telling us we needed to transfer our current insurance over the new vehicle before we drove it off the lot so we made that call to the insurance company at the dealership.

The dealership and the insurance communicated and forms were faxed over to the dealership where they told us everything was good to go.

My question is are we just screwed at this point? I feel like we should have been notified that we didn't have the correct full coverage at some point since the lien holder requires it for a financed vehicle.

What a crappy way to start the new year. Sigh.

    Sewage insurance help

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 12:48 PM PST

The home I purchased 2 years ago was a decent deal, and my wife and I were quite happy with the choice. Until we started finding all the little issues an older home can have.

Two summers ago, we started having some sewer water ba k up in the basement. We didn't think it was a big deal, because it would go down pretty quickly, and wouldn't happen again for a while. We had a plumbing company come and take a look at it finally, and they said there were some tree roots invading the pipe. It would take replacing it to fix it, they said, but we were ok in the meantime.

A year later, we had a bit of an issue again. We had them out again, and they cleaned out the pipe again. It wasn't much they had to do, and we were good to go. A few months later, I was talking with my coworkers who actually live in the same neighborhood, and they said to look into an insurance claim. I talked to my agent, who said that sewer pipe coverage had been added recently, and "we can get you covered!" he exclaimed.

3-4 months later, I get denied coverage. Because the first time I had the plumbing company came out was 3 months before coverage was added to my policy.

Do I have any way of getting insurance to help me, or an I screwed until I pony up $10,000 to fix the problem myself?

    Trouble understanding Medical Insurance

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 08:55 AM PST

    Hi Everyone,

Hoping someone may be able to provide some insight. The company I work for changed insurance a few months back. I have T1 Diabetes and see an endocrinologist once per year. For the first time I received a bill in additional to my copay. It may be important to note that the Endo that I see is located in an office within the hospital. Many of the specialists office are located in that hospital. I called the insurance company and they said that the visit was billed as "outpatient/hospital" which is subject to the deductible. I called the hospitals billing dept and they said all specialists are billed under that code and there is no other code.

Would I be better off finding a specialist that is not affiliated with this hospital? I would hate to leave the practice, but from a cost perspective seems like it would make sense.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

Rear ended, confused with the claims process

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 12:31 PM PST

    Location: California

I was rear ended over a week ago and gave a call to my insurance company to file a claim. They said that if they want to make the other insurance pay for repairs, that I should make a claim directly against the other drivers insurance. The other option was to make my own insurance pay, so I went with option 1 since I know I'm not at fault.

I sent in my claim and went and got my initial estimate. I asked them what to do next and they said to bring my car into a shop for repairs and supplement estimate so I did. They also said that they are going to work with and pay the body shop directly.

My car is in the shop and the damage is at $3000. The guy who handled the supplement from the other insurance company said they're going to pay for the supplement to not hold up repairs. I also received a call that same day from another person from their insurance that said I need to give a recorded statement. I missed that call and tried to call them back but I never got another call after leaving a voicemail and multiple phone calls. It's been a couple days now. I filed an SR1 now that my damages are higher than expected.

Now recently, I also received a check in the mail for the initial estimate. I thought they had said they are going to directly pay the body shop so I'm confused what this check is for?

Also, I received a call from my own insurance because I believe they left the claim open just Incase I decide to go through with them. The representative told me she called to check up on my claim with the other insurance company and said that the other driver has not yet talked to their insurance company so the other insurance company is not taking liability yet. This doesn't make sense to me since they already said they paid for my repairs and I've received a check already?

What am I missing from this process? Do you usually get paid out before who is liable?

[CA-Auto Insurance] Subrogation and Arbitration process?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 03:00 PM PST

I am insured through State Farm and in March of 2018 I was involved in a car accident. Claim made, reported, paid the deductible for repairs since I needed a vehicle and so forth. It looks like it has been in the recovery process since end of April. Should I be worried? What should I be doing? State Farm hasn't notified me of anything or told me if they required me to do anything. From what I can tell based on google, this means the other party's insurance is denying to pay up right? What should I be expecting to do?
