Bought a car from friend, involved in accident

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 04:35 AM PST

Hello I am in need of advice. I bought a trailerblazer from my coworker for 350 dollars as we both were in a tight spot he offered to let me take the car for half now and after I paid him the other half he would get the title.

Forward to a week later I gave him the other half and he was working on getting the title.

I was involved in a hit and run with a drunk driver and the police caught the guy and are now waiting for the insurance from the trailblazer to finish the report but my coworker is refusing to give me any info and said his wife dropped the trailblazer the day he sold it do to the high deductible and at this point saying that since it wasn't in his possession we shouldn't even be using his insurance At all.. But as far as I'm aware since the title is in his name and he has not gotten it to me yet it's still his insurance? Not sure where to go from here appreciate any and all help

Need Advice on landing a job in adjusting, any info will be helpful!

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 01:00 PM PST

I'm 28 years old, I have a bachelor's degree, and I just passed the insurance adjusters exam for my state (South Carolina) and I'm in the process of applying for the license. Other than that I have no idea what I'm doing! I became interested in this career when I heard how much independent adjusters can make, the fact they're not tied to a desk, and they get to travel around a bit. I have no experience in insurance but I've worked at law firms, tax offices, call centers etc. All the job ads around me want experience, but should I just contact the independent adjusting firms around me? should I learn Xactimate first? Really not sure where to start. Any info will help, Thanks!

Motorcycle was stolen 3 months ago, insurance still hasn't paid.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 11:44 PM PST

So my bike was stolen from my home 3 months ago (this is in Australia), I had comprehensive insurance so its all good.

It was my only vehicle and the time frame they gave me when I filed a claim was 6-8 weeks. Whenever I call the insurance, they seem to have no idea what is going on. They assigned an investigator a couple months ago, to whom I sent all the registration documents, police notices, keys etc and he claims his part is done but when I talk to the insurance people they tell me a different story every time, blaming me for not sending all the documentation or blaming the investigator for not emailing them all the details.

Is there anything at all I can do? THREE months is ridiculous, why pay for insurance at all? I strongly rely on the vehicle and have been heavily affected by the theft.

I need that money and I am getting desperate. Any advice is welcome.

    Thanks

Whose at fault in simultaneous reversal in parking lot? [TX]

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 11:09 AM PST

My wife was in a parking lot accident yesterday. She was backing up and hit another driver who was backing up at the same time. The parking lot is set up with perpendicular spots, not angled parking. The other party was one spot to the right on the other side of the aisle. Her back right bumper hit his front passenger door. Minor scratches to the bumper, but he had an indented door. They both got out and exchanged insurances and left, no police report.

She believes she is at fault as she hit him. I've read that simultaneous reversals are generally considered equal fault collisions with each party responsible for their own repairs, but I also read some states may give more liability to one driver and less to the other depending on circumstances. I reviewed our front dash cam footage and she is completely out of her parking spot when the collision happens, so I believe she had reversed first and would be the less liable party. Unfortunately, my rear dash camera has been unreliable and didn't start recording until minutes after the collision (I just ordered a new one two nights ago, coincidentally).

Can anyone shed more light on who would be held liable? We contacted our insurance to let them know there was a minor collision and that we'll not likely get it repaired. Pictures were given to them showing the damage to both cars. I have the front dash cam footage saved, but I told my wife not to mention it to the insurance as I didn't know if it'd help or hurt our case.

Secondly, will our car insurance Amica raise our premium for a minor collision? Should we have submitted the claim right away or wait until the other party files a claim to our insurance?

Edit: Added drawings based on my understanding of events and the dash camera footage. Starting positions: https://imgur.com/DTobirU Moment of Impact: https://imgur.com/rM0Ugbi I have no conclusive footage of the other car's position when impact happens, but you can draw your own conclusions based on the damage.

I tried to call the grocery store and they confirmed that there are cameras in the parking lot, but they cannot release the footage to me unless there is a police report. I doubt the police will be of much help for such a minor accident in a private parking lot, so that seems like a dead end to me.

    State Farm

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 06:50 PM PST

I am 29. I have a 2017 honda accord sport. I have been paying the same amount 150, went up to 160 when I got this new car, for 7 years. Never been at fault in an accident,

last ticket was 6 years ago. Can I ask for a lower rate?

I don't know what the deductible is because I have never caused an accident

*2 accidents in the past years (not my fault did not pay deductible because it wasn't my fault and both times the at fault driver had state farm as well) I was compensated with car value/repairs/rental both times but still upset at the inconvenience

Hospital performed procedure after insurance denial but before I received denial letter

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 06:41 PM PST

On or around 1/18 my doctor ordered an MRI and wanted it completed within two weeks due to urgency. In a letter dated 1/22 my insurance denied what I assume was a pre-authorization request and indicated that in their opinion I should receive a CT instead, and therefore the MRI was not medically necessary. The MRI was performed on 1/23. Today, 1/30 I received the letter from my insurance.

FWIW, the letter from my insurance is written as though I still have a choice about whether I receive the MRI.... Also FWIW, my doctor mentioned at the time of ordering the MRI that a CT would have been just as good.

I haven't spoken with the hospital billing department yet but I assume they'll want to hold me responsible for the cost of the MRI per the financial consent forms I signed (before my first clinic appointment, never at the radiologist, but I imagine it doesn't matter).

To what extent is there a point arguing:

    1. That the hospital should have informed me that the authorization had either not been received, or worse (if they knew), it had been denied, before performing the MRI? I had no idea at the time of receiving the services that payment was up in the air; I assumed that either it was pre-authorized or that it didn't need any kind of pre-authorization.

    2. Since my insurance probably constitutes a huge chunk of this hospital's business, that they should have known and informed me that my insurance would deny MRIs such as mine on a general policy to prefer CTs?

Final question: Am I just a sucker for assuming this was all taken care of? I'm looking on my insurer's member website and I don't see any steps I could have taken myself to determine if the MRI was covered or not. There is no claim in the system (I assume the hospital will file one at some point and it will also get denied). There's no apparent way for me to file for a pre-approval myself.

Does Geico use a hair drug test for every position?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 06:22 AM PST

Sorry it's this is a bit off topic. I was recently laid off from work and I've applied for a customer service job at Geico. However, I've heard they do a drug test using hair. Can anyone confirm? Hair tests are expensive, and it seems odd they would use those test on low level customer service jobs.

I don't do anything hardcore, but I used to smoke weed. I quit about a month ago but that's not long enough to pass a hair test.

    Thanks in advance.

    Insurance For Tool/Equipment Rental Comoany

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 10:41 AM PST

I'm starting a tool & equiptment rental company since I own a lot of specialized equipment and tools ( many of which go unused for long periods of time).

I'm looking for a insurance company who offers coverage for what I'm renting out which should just be liability insurance (correct me if I'm wrong). I've called a couple and they said they don't offer these products.

    GAP Coverage Question

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 09:30 AM PST

I'm in the process of going through an insurance claim after being in a accident. Now I'm pretty sure my car will be totaled out cause its only worth $2,400 and there is at least $3,000 worth of repairs needed. My question is, once they declare the car a loss, how do I go about filing a GAP claim that I bought through the dealership? I can't seem to find any info about it other than if it's good or bad to have it and what it does. Thanks for any insight you can give.

    Vision Insurance

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 02:55 PM PST

I was thinking about continuing coverage from my previous employer with the cobra plan because they have a higher frame allowance. But I was wondering with my new employer I have a new vision plan with a different provider. Can I use both? Meaning I go get my prescription and a pair of glasses with one insurance and a second pair with the other insurance? Or can you only use one?

    Looking into Renter’s Insurance Policy

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 02:49 PM PST

    $172/yr

    Standard:

    Loss of Use - $2,000

    Damage to other's Prop - $500

    Medical Payments - $1,000

    Personal Property - $10,000

•Should I include my car here?

    Personal Liability - $100,000

    Property Deductible - $500

    Sewer Backup - No

I think $10,000 should cover all my personal property I really don't have that much stuff. If my car should be included in that, I'd need to bump it up though. I've been reading that some people have been paying similar to what I would pay, but for triple the personal property coverage. Do they just have a higher deductible?

Also, I'd save like a $1.50/month on auto insurance.

Does this seem like a decent policy?

    Humana nightmare

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 02:28 PM PST

So, my girlfriend signed up for Humana during the open enrollment period from the "marketplace". Well she made the payment the day she signed up and never received insurance card or info in the mail..

Finally last week or so she started making calls because she got an email for her to make the February payment and can't pay because she still doesn't have the member ID. Well, she called Humana and they said they cant find her in the system at all and referred her to the market place who referred her back to Humana.

I think this was last Tuesday, she ran out of time so tried figuring it out Wednesday, she was hung up on 3 times from the Humana representatives on Wednesday.

Today she received a bill in the mail for February... dated on the 16th.

Shes on the phone with them now as I type this and the reps cant find her in the system and the woman literally just came back and said "maybe the plan was cancelled a long time ago. "

Like omg. We're waiting to speak to a supervisor but literally every other time shes requested they've dropped the call. So we shall see.

Also, is there anything we can do?? Because if she stops paying it they're gonna ding her credit, but they cant find the account to even cancel it.

Can the value of a totaled vehicle be negotiated?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 01:56 PM PST

    Good afternoon,

She drives a 2008 Toyota corolla with about 145k miles on it, only olved in a minor car accident, where she hit the car in front.

She drives a 2008 Toyota corolla with about 145k miles on it, only one owner.

She has full coverage with Progressive insurance and they have deemed her at fault, so had to pay for the repair of the other vehicle as well.

It seems that Progressive will write off her car as 'totaled' given its age and mileage, although the body damage was minimal. This is her first claim ever, in over 8 years with Progressive, and she has no prior traffic tickets.

The car has been towed to the Progressive facility for inspection and appraiser is supposed to get back to her with an offer for the totaled vehicle. I presume the appraiser will also get back to her with an offer for the owner retained salvage vehicle.

Can these values be negotiated by my sister, especially the offer they make to total and keep the car? For example if they say $2000, can she negotiate?

She is not in a rush to receive the funds, so would rather get a fair price.

Any advice please? Thank you so much

Personal Belongings List - State Farm - Water Damage Claim

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 10:02 AM PST

I created this thread about 4-5 months ago, when we returned from vacation to a water damaged basement (and upstairs damage as well): https://www.reddit.com/r/Insurance/comments/9d06jz/water_damage_insurance_claim_how_to_navigate/

After a couple months of back and forth with State Farm's adjusters and our contractor, we finally got the construction costs agreed upon / resolved (went from original State Farm estimate of $13k, and ended up over $63k before finalized).

That said, we are still working on our Personal Belongings list. We submitted an XLS document with all of our items, description, and costs. They finally responded and said that the list will not suffice, and that we have to manually upload each item into a website (Contents Collaboration). They also said we need to provide receipts and proof of purchases, and the age of the items.

    Some questions I have:

    • I was told by my local State Farm agent, that our policy covers any damages with "replacement cost value".

I asked her to expand on that, and this is her exact wording (pasting from email):

    • Yup. Say, heaven forbid, there is a fire, and your 5, 10, 20 year old couch is destroyed – as long as you replace it we will pay the current market cost for like, kind, and quality. If you do not replace it we will pay you only for value of the old couch. Hope that helps!

So what I am trying to determine is - how do we proceed?

Do they only pay us complete cost if we go out and buy a new couch, and provide them with the receipt? If not, they give us a "depreciated" value for our old couch (which is gone now, as is everything else on our list)?

Our total belongings list came out to around $8k. It included a sectional couch, 2 mattresses, TV projector, a set of vintage JBL speakers (that obviously cost 5-10x what they cost back in the 70's), some wooden furniture (like bed stands, dressers), art (not fancy art, just prints / canvases on the wall), etc.

If I have full replacement value, does it really matter the "age" of my items? We plan to replace everything in our basement, but we're not ready to buy yet because the contractors have not even put up new drywall yet.

If we do need to provide receipts / ages - how do we go about that? Most of these items, we would not have kept a receipt for. Most CC statements won't go back more than a couple of years, to find the purchases. Some of the items, such as the vintage JBL speakers - were given as a gift, and would never have a receipt (they are 40-50 years old, and a comparable set of today's speakers would cost thousands).

When do companies check MVR / "score" records? After online purchase is made, or during online quote?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 12:24 PM PST

Checking insurance quotes with top online companies, progressive, geico, etc. All seemingly let you do on your honor reporting of past incidents.

The one that I put my SSN in yielded a much lower rate, so I assume they used a credit check.

But I was curious, do these online quotes often get "verified" post purchase, and adjusted after the fact. Or do many of them stand?

Is there any probability for a LOWER quote based on SSN review post purchase? Or only hire based on accidents, tickets, claims, etc?

My sedan premium went up again, is this too much for Calif?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 10:44 AM PST

I hope it's not against the rules to ask if I am paying too much for car insurance. I am with this company since I bought the new car (100% owned) in 2014.

Civic 2014, 40k miles, 9k per year mostly around San Jose, CA. I have a driver license for 15 years (10 in Europe, 5 in US). I never caused any incident, but I was involved in two with no fault.

    Total 6 Month Premium: $540.70 $500 deductible

Bodily Injury Liability $15,000 per person/$30,000 per occurrence

Property Damage Liability $25,000 per occurrence

Uninsured Motorist & Underinsured Motorist $15,000 per person/$30,000 per occurrence

    Thank you for your advice.

Tickets not hitting current car insurance.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 09:38 AM PST

Hello all, I feel like a dumb basic white girl for asking this. However, it's really weird.

I'm 21, and have had Allstate liability insurance on my car for a few years. It was really decent, around $100/month. No problem!

I'm a habitual speeder, and have gotten many, many citations over the past 5 years. Around 3-4 separate 20mph overs, etc. (I know that makes me an asshole, etc.)

Here's the really crazy part. My Allstate has never gone up due to these. I was always paying $100 for liability. Never heard anything about it.

My car (paid off) recently was totaled (not at fault.) I'm looking at buying a new car on a loan, all of that mess. I called USAA, they originally quoted me $250/mo. After seeing my record, it went to $550. This is totally understandable, and I know I'm fuuuuucked. Whatever.

Why the heck didn't Allstate catch them? Maybe because they all happened when I was with them and the system never caught it?

Was I just very lucky? I always was just in denial and didn't think about it. I'm sure as shit not letting them know. Lololol.

Any internal folks have a postulation? Thanks!

    "Reinstate" vs new policy?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 07:56 AM PST

I cancelled my insurance a few weeks ago and now got a new vehicle. The agent is telling me that I should "reinstate" my old policy and he's being sketchy about that language. Said it can't be a new policy until a little over a month of no coverage. This is a new vehicle. What's going on here? Does this matter for my coverage or premium or history? Statefarm if that matters.

    How much should I disclose?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 05:59 AM PST

A call for help here on how much disclosure is or isn't required...

I am looking into adding a family member as a named individual on my existing third party car insurance policies. This family member drives the cars on the odd occasion so I thought it might be sensible to add their name.

After asking my insurance broker what existing coverage and conditions there were with my policies for unnamed drivers the response was as follows:

'Anyone can drive your car with your permission but only "very occasionally". The insurer doesn't define "very occasionally" so you need to be very careful when letting somebody else drive your car. It is possible to add your family member as a named driver for both cars at no extra charge, subject to insurer approval. In order for us to do so, please can you provide the following information: details of any accidents, losses or claims history, license offense points or driving convictions'

So this is where I start to become unsure of things...

This family member had their drivers license disqualified for a year after being found to be driving a vehicle in a weight class for which they did not have the appropriate license. In case it matters... my family member's license was valid for a 'Private Car - Vehicle with seven passenger seats or less' however they were found to be driving a 3.5 tonne Ford Transit van which is actually classified as a 'Light Goods Vehicle - Goods vehicle not exceeding 5.5 tonnes'.

They were found to be driving it after they were involved in an accident and the officers at the scene noticed the discrepancy after checking everything. However, my family member was not at fault for the accident itself and did not receive any penalties or infringements for this such as negligent driving. The other party in the accident was at fault and it was their insurance which paid for all damages including those of the vehicle my family member was driving. Nonetheless, my family member was still referred to the courts as a seperate case and had their license disqualified for a year by the magistrate starting approx August 2017 and ending August 2018. So their license has been valid again since then.

In light of all the above, what do you think is my best course of action here?

Since my family member wasn't at fault for any damages in the incident or negligent driving could it be possible that their disqualification for driving a vehicle without the correct class of license may not actually be considered an issue by my insurer and the family member could be added to the policy at no extra charge?

Or is there a high likelihood the insurer would want to raise the premium if I wanted to add the family member and if I gave full disclosure on the incident?

If I didn't disclose the incident and later my family member was involved and at fault in an accident whilst driving my vehicle what kind of risk do I run here?

Or is it a case that once they're named on the policy it's unlikely that the previous incident would come to light or cause any problems with coverage?

Any and all advice would be very helpful here!

Recently changed auto insurance policies. Do I owe my previous carrier?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 05:36 AM PST

I live in New York City and drive my car maybe 2 or 3 times a year long distance to visit family. I keep the bare minimum liability insurance on it.

Recently changed carriers because my old one was charging a ridiculous rate. I waited until the end of the policy year before switching.

Problem is there was a lapse of about a week, where my new policy began with my old carrier (which I did not make a payment on, in anticipation of a near-term switch) and the new policy began with the new carrier.

I'm now covered by the new carrier, but my old one is saying I owe them money for the 7-10 days I was "covered" in the new year's policy (though I had made no payment on it yet). Apparently I was enrolled in some automatic renewal program. I did not drive during that 7-10 period, for what it's worth.

Does anyone know what my legal obligations are here? Can I get away with not throwing that money at my old carrier, for basically a technicality? Or will there be some legal ramifications, or some blacklist I'm added to that will hurt me down the road? Either for not paying my previous carrier, or not being insured those 7-10 days.
