What would happen if a billionaire indexer dumped his shares? Posted: 22 Dec 2018 02:20 PM PST Steve Ballmer announced on Twitter that he is only invested in index funds and Microsoft for the time being. Let's assume he had $10-$20 Billion invested in index tracking ETFs, what would happen if he dumped all his shares in a period of a few days or weeks? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 22 Dec 2018 12:02 PM PST Even during the financial crisis in 2008, government bonds and gold worked. And in 2015, when a majority of asset classes finished in the red, at least stocks and Treasuries squeaked out a positive return... https://stockmarketnews.today/2018/12/22/in-2018-just-about-every-single-asset-class-one-can-invest-in-from-stocks-around-the-globe-to-government-debt-to-corporate-bonds-to-commodities-have-posted-negative-returns-or-unchanged-performance/ [link] [comments] |
Bimbo hoarding cash for the past 5 years. Sitting on $100k. What would you do? Posted: 22 Dec 2018 05:07 PM PST I'm a blissfully ignorant engineer that can't make a decision without over-thinking it 24/7. That's how I got myself into this situation. I've missed out on some great gains. My $30k IRA account is in VYM and VFFVX. I'm not asking what should I do. What would YOU do? [link] [comments] |
What happens to warrants when a company lists on the stock exchange? Posted: 23 Dec 2018 01:46 AM PST I own a small number of warrants with a start-up company. The CEO told me recently he's looking to list on the stock exchange (OSE, if it matters). Do I need to exercise the warrants before the listing? Do the warrants expire prematurely if I do nothing and the company lists? I tried looking online before posting here, but my Google-fu is weak. [link] [comments] |
How do investors like Buffett purchase or sell stocks without affecting intra-day movements? Posted: 23 Dec 2018 04:16 AM PST I recall listening once to Phil Town where he mentioned once that Buffett (i.e: folks are Berkshire) would often limit buy order at $400 range to avoid tilting the stock market one way or the other. Does the SEC actually enforces such a rule? That being said, $400 seems a bit tad low but needless to say, I presume Buffett doesn't move millions on a buy order or does he? [link] [comments] |
Paying taxes on dividends while being down for the year Posted: 22 Dec 2018 08:17 PM PST So the year is almost over and I am down overall in my portfolio. I have a bunch of dividend stocks and my brokerage account is set up to automatically reinvest them. I am negative on all my holdings and don't want to sell to realize the losses. Will I have to pay taxes on the dividends I received either way? If the answer to the question above is yes. Is the only way not to pay those to realize a loss in on of my stocks? [link] [comments] |
Discord plans to spend $150 million to move into new areas, including selling videogames online. Posted: 23 Dec 2018 04:26 AM PST Discord Inc., which makes chat software popular among videogame players, said it is now valued at $2.05 billion after a new funding round, the startup's second this year as it expands its footprint into sales and subscriptions in the fast-growing game industry. The San Francisco company filed paperwork Friday to raise $150 million. Greenoaks Capital, which counts the stock-trading app Robinhood Markets Inc. and the construction startup Katerra Inc. among its investments, was the lead investor in the round... https://stockmarketnews.today/2018/12/23/discord-plans-to-spend-150-million-to-move-into-new-areas-including-selling-videogames-online/ [link] [comments] |
Daily advice thread. All questions about your personal situation should be asked here Posted: 23 Dec 2018 04:04 AM PST If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or anything similar. There is no single answer to this question, but we will also need A LOT MORE information if we are to give some sort of answer

Posted: 23 Dec 2018 03:47 AM PST I know most of you (including myself) are essentially Bogle heads with a focus on the long term. However, given the recent rumor that Trump may fire Jerome Powell, does that change anything? To me, this undermines the long tem stability that we all have been brought up to believe. How will you all react to that news should it happen? This is indeed a scary precedent to establish if Trump goes through with this rumor. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Dec 2018 02:27 AM PST Looking to transfer some money out of cash (currently getting 1.5% - not at all bad) and into investments, imminently. I'm currently only considering Vanguard (UK platform although still interested in the global view). Investments are for the 10+ years to long term / retirement. Given the pros and cons of the general environment at this time / future outlook, how would you break down your portfolio? Any specific funds? How would you split the weightings? Anything to specifically avoid? Why, to all the above? Much appreciated! [link] [comments] |

Is it weird that I'm excited for a bear market? Posted: 22 Dec 2018 10:58 AM PST This will be my first bear market as an investor, and apart from the possible serious consequences of a recession, I'm actually excited about it. I see it as an opportunity to make money. I'm looking forward to see the crowd panic while I (hopefully) stay on course and stick to my long term strategy. [link] [comments] |
Is the Shiller PE ratio broken? Posted: 23 Dec 2018 04:11 AM PST As we just suffered great losses last Friday, the standard S&P500 PE ratio is at 19 times earnings (vs. 15.73x average) while Shiller PE is at 27.2 times earnings (vs. 16.59x average). We are still high above the average figures but Shiller indicates way higher. [link] [comments] |
From an investment perspective, has Trump's presidency been good for the market? Posted: 22 Dec 2018 08:32 PM PST I'm not talking about building walls or how he's an idiot on twitter, but I genuinely want to know whether he has had a positive/negative effect on the market. Also, what you think market conditions are going to be like for the next few years of his presidency. [link] [comments] |
What are some phenomenal investment decisions you have made using exotic metrics? Posted: 22 Dec 2018 12:06 PM PST Forget EBITDA, PE, what have you. Some of my best investments have been with exotic metrics that nobody else uses. For example, using Glassdoor ratings of companies as an investment signal, you potentially outperform the S&P 500 by 115.6%: https://www.glassdoor.com/research/app/uploads/sites/2/2015/05/GD_Report_1.pdf The idea being that exotic metrics allows you to catch undervalued assets before rest of the market prices that information in. What exotic metrics have you had success with? [link] [comments] |
I can't decide between a Total Market ETF or an S&P500 ETF - Help! Posted: 22 Dec 2018 11:59 AM PST I'm looking to start buying ETF's in the new year. I'm Canadian so I would be looking at XUU (equivalent to VTI) and VFV (equivalent to VOO). I'm going to be holding one of these ETF's for around 40 years given that I'm only 27, and plan to contribute monthly or bi-yearly. The problem is I don't know which one I should choose. Here are the main differences: VFV which follows the S&P 500 (unhedged) has an MER of .08%. (Overview of this ETF here) XUU which is a Total US market ETF with an MER of .07% (Overview of this ETF here) It looks like VFV has 511 holdings, representing the S&P500, whereas XUU holds a basket of ETF's to represent the S&P500. The only other difference is that dividends are paid monthly on XUU and quarterly on VFV.
I have a high tolerance for risk if that makes any difference and willing to take more volatility if it means potential for greater growth. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Using Inverse ETFs for bear market. SPXS, SDOW, TZA, ZBIO Posted: 22 Dec 2018 07:10 PM PST Getting ready for the big bounce in the market then will scale in some of these for the real bear market crash. Posted: 22 Dec 2018 06:46 PM PST ill probably only play around with options at 200-300 dollars at a time. starting slow. but im wondering something these high OTM options with prices of say, .03 thats 3 dollars to buy a contract. but my broker is like 50 cents per contract to buy, and sell (with a 5 dollar trade charge on it), and i think even 15 dollars to "execute" the option. not sure on prices but i think its around there in this case. wouldnt buying those options be a total waste of money. like. it costs a 1 dollar commission which is 33% of the value? Random question; re- online / international investing Posted: 22 Dec 2018 08:16 PM PST Not sure if this is the right Sub to post in. A bit of background, I am a German National, however i am not registered in Germany as I have never really lived there. Grew up in Asia and now working in Vietnam. I have a VN Bank account (Standard Chartered) but no other account. Now SC VN doesn't offer a trading account. And for all German sites/ banks I would need to be registered there which I am trying to avoid. Is there another way I could open a trading account to be able to buy into Index funds / Stocks? I have tried looking it up online buy have come up short. Wondering if anyone has Experience with a similar problem and might point me in the right direction. Wouldn't be opposed to opening a account in a different country if that's what it takes. [link] [comments] |
