r/Stocks Fundamentals Friday Dec 21, 2018 Posted: 21 Dec 2018 09:06 AM PST Feel free to ask questions or talk about (not argue against) fundamentals such as tools, terms, and other important aspects of the investing world. But before you do see the following: Important/Basic Terms:
Each of these formulas/tools are important and unique in their own way. However, no single one can be used to successfully invest alone by just itself. Instead, think of them as only a piece of a big puzzle that make up something bigger. In addition to knowing what these terms mean, it's also important to understand why they look the way they do as they can sometimes be misleading without further understanding. For a example, if dividends are 3 and EPS is a negative number, then a company might need to issue debt to keep up with the dividend payments which is bad for long term growth. The importance of quarterly earnings: At the end of every quarter, public companies will make sure everything is more or less up to date and correct; they will have their accounting teams put together things like a balance sheet and income statement for shareholders. They will often provide a run down of how things went in the most recent quarter and what kind of outlook/guidance they see moving forward. These run downs are typically under highlights in the earnings release and are always mentioned in the live conference call which investors can listen in. Don't be overwhelmed by all the terms here, it's a lot of info to take in and understand. Instead, look them over and take advantage of some of the great websites available out there for learning this stuff. For some great sites/tools you can use to learn about these terms, follow the market or specific companies, and aid in your investing check out the following links:
If you have a basic question, for example "what is EBITDA," then google "investopedia EBITDA" and click the Investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned. S&P closing red for it's 11th straight session Posted: 21 Dec 2018 12:24 PM PST It's incredible watching this. I've never got to experience such panic and sell off before. How is everyone doing? I know half of you are selling in fear and the other half are saying this is great everything's on sale. Just note that the ladder camp says that every day lol. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 20 Dec 2018 06:38 PM PST I'm an avid follower of Buffett and the recent market rout brings things to a perspective that even the most successful investor in the world can make bad calls and make billions of losses at the same time. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 21 Dec 2018 08:55 AM PST Are you guys buying Microsoft? I'm thinking about if it drops below 100 I'm going to buy some but I'm also hesitant to see how far the market is going to go [link] [comments] |
Can someone put this into perspective? Posted: 21 Dec 2018 02:03 PM PST I'm a new trader (literally 18) who invested a lot of money that I saved up from working in high school. I've lost about 22% of it, and I'm feeling pretty deflated, but I'm thinking I have time on my side and even if I have to wait to sell at 30, I don't need the money now so I should be fine. How bad is the market right now? Is 20% an average loss right now? Is this the worst since 2008s crash, or is this pretty routine? Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
Posted: 21 Dec 2018 10:59 AM PST I know this is a somewhat frequently asked question but with Canada and Mexico legalizing pot, as well as some states in the U.S, I feel like it's going to become medically legal across the board under this administration. Any ideas on companies or subsidiaries that would be smart to invest in? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 21 Dec 2018 10:26 AM PST We are undeniably in a bear market now, it has officially beaten the bullishness out of me. I've been catching knives for the last 2 months. I am a first year investor and looking back it's funny how inflated my confidence was before October, to the point where I've been confidently buying these "dips" thinking they'll immediately turn around again. Obviously it has not turned around yet and it's hard not to feel defeated. I keep internally repeating to myself that I'm in the for the long haul but it's hard when my portfolio is down 50% from June. I am going to keep holding and I've been thinking about buying SQQQ with my January contribution but we'll see. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 21 Dec 2018 06:03 AM PST I'm holding 100 shares of AMZN and now it's down to 1460 from 2000. I still earning small amount of money. Should I sell before it goes further down? I'd like to see your opinion on AMZN [link] [comments] |
Which app is best to check for the performance of stocks across sectors? Posted: 21 Dec 2018 08:36 AM PST Got a new phone and got sick of using Yahoo Finance. Is there an app that categorizes a stock into the sector or industry they are in and if I click "semi-conductors", companies in that industry are listed? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Selling when high then reinvesting when low? Posted: 21 Dec 2018 01:26 AM PST I'm currently holding a large amount of a stock that's gone up 15% in the last few months despite the market wide dip. I'm new to stocks (about 7 months now) and was wondering whether selling now and then buying back in if it dips hard would be a good idea? [link] [comments] |
What was your biggest lost and did you recover? Posted: 21 Dec 2018 02:16 PM PST Made huge mistake portfolio is butchered half gone? Would love some perspective [link] [comments] |
Anyone think NADAQ’s gonna bounce back over the weekend? Posted: 21 Dec 2018 01:26 PM PST I just shorted the s*** out of NASDAQ this morning via SQQQ. should I hold on till Monday? Or sell now? [link] [comments] |
Anyone know good apps or websites to get more then just charts for stock price Posted: 21 Dec 2018 12:54 PM PST I'm looking for an app or website that shows things like revenue, p/e, profit ect but charted [link] [comments] |
Posted: 21 Dec 2018 08:56 AM PST There's a lot of deals out there if you can stomach it, folks. The economic indicators are very well intact so if you're long, I would think twice about selling. I left the market around 2,800 as I thought we were a bit inflated. I just bought leap calls yesterday in sectors I think are a little too low. AAPL - -40%+- Every time there's a bad quarter, analysts say "it's just a phone company". Meanwhile, their cash reserves are greater than many sovereign nations. NFLX - -40%+- This is a bit of a risky play as they were super high to begin with, and with Disney's upcoming service, they may take a hit. Still, I think they'll be around for a while. UPRO - -50%+- 3X ETF for SPY. This is self explanatory. Barring a recession which is unlikely, the market should rebound within the next 6-12 months. JNUG - -60%+- 3X ETF for gold miners. Relatively safe play if the economy continues to crap itself. And, decent volatility to boot. USO- -45%+- Oil. Same as JNUG, relatively safe play. JNJ- -15+- This company is just solid for any portfolio. GE- A LOT+- This is a fairly risky play but I'm banking on the fact they get their act together in 2019. However, titans fall from time to time. Just look at Sears, though I'd say this is much different than retail. FB- -45%+- I've always disliked this company based on their subscriber rates being close to full attrition for years now. However, based on the scandals and market correction, they've taken a beating. People forget they print cash. AMZN- -30%+- It's amzn, what else needs to be said? The only issue they face is government regulation and that has yet to be acknowledged so they'll continue to be a juggernaut. If you look back to 2016 and bought leap calls in February for a mere $10,000 investment, it could've netted 2.2 million dollars. SQQQ- And here's the safety net. Should everything fail before expiry, this etf will provide an equal balance sheet, at least. This is risky as it's affected by interest rates and contango but if you keep an eye on it, you should be fine. Short term only or you'll get eaten alive. For the more risk centric investors, VXX. However, you'll need balls of steel. I'm not advising anyone to do anything, I'm just sharing what I started scaling into yesterday. Before you panic, understand that the market always goes up over time because it has to, based on our economic model. YoY we're down roughly 8% and if we hit 2,400, we'll be down 22% from ATHs just a couple of months ago. These type of drops don't happen very often during a spurring economy so do your research and understand the cycles. I could be wrong but if I am, we're going into to a recession anyway. And if that's true, I'll just keep averaging down. All of my positions are over 2y expirys (except the 3x-6mo) so there's time. Note* the percentages are based of memory, please cut me some slack if I'm a few points off. [link] [comments] |
Bottoming out or just getting started? Posted: 21 Dec 2018 07:21 AM PST What do people think the timeline will be for this recent stock loss to recoup? If it turns into a full recession could be as long as 12 months or so. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 21 Dec 2018 11:06 AM PST anybody knows why it took a dive start of this week? anyway, probably misunderstood relation to farm bill and now it is understood that this stock will actually benefit from farm bill despite coming from outside US [link] [comments] |
Posted: 21 Dec 2018 10:40 AM PST Would like some opinions. Bought FB at IPO for $38 and added to my position on it's way up. Highest price I paid was $116 and watched it go up from there I know I probably should have sold 2-3 months ago, but I got greedy. Would you guys sell now (still up around 70%) or ride out the bad news? [link] [comments] |
Explain what investing in silver means Posted: 21 Dec 2018 10:23 AM PST I know a market correction is about to hit but my question is how do you invest in silver? Is it best to buy physical silver or silver stock or mining company that mines silver? Serious question btw [link] [comments] |

Should I even bother with individual reits? Posted: 21 Dec 2018 07:31 AM PST Are reits ETFs such as VNQ reccommend over individual reits? I am trying to diversify my portfolio with some reit exposure. For individual reits I am looking at DLR and OHI. [link] [comments] |
(BAC) vs (JPM): which is a better choice right now? Posted: 20 Dec 2018 11:49 PM PST In the current market/ situation, which would you choose to invest in? (Given that you would put the same amount of capitol in either- not one share of BAC vs. one share of JPM.) Disclosure: I hold positions in both. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 21 Dec 2018 10:39 AM PST Started using the Acorn app to invest a few months ago and I am liking it. It rounds the change up from your purchases and invest it into the market, essentially a digital change jar. If anyone wants to check it out use my code (https://acorns.com/invite/UZNHY3) and we both get $5. Check it out and comment what you think. FYI I'm not shilling for this company as I have no connections, I actually like the product and have been using/trying it out over the past couple months and love it. [link] [comments] |
