    LLC Vs. Sole Proprietorship I

    Posted: 23 Dec 2018 04:54 PM PST

Hey guys, I am 19 years old and over the last year and a half I have been welding and selling stuff I have made as a hobby and easy money as I finished up high school and am going through college. I've started making fire pits and I am doing quite well this time of year. I'm making about $600+ a week take home which I think is decent for someone fresh out of high school working for themselves. I'm wanting to continue growing my business and I want to either become a LLC or Sole Proprietorship. But how do I know which one is best for me? I've done a lot of research and I'm leaning towards an LLC. Can anybody give me some advice? I am located in Texas, I don't know if that makes a difference.

    11-year-old business owner?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2018 02:49 PM PST

Like me, my step-daughter has a small business she's working on (it's a pretty useful idea that I think she will have no problem selling). She needs help with some of the basic stuff but is really driven to start her venture. I've agreed to help her get the things she can't set up, but her b2b idea requires her to go door to door to salons and things.

I'm willing to drive her around (she has a list of businesses to visit already), but I'm afraid businesses might not take her seriously or that she's a proxy for a parent or something.

What would be the best way to ensure her success as a parent?

I'd like to hire a digital marketing agency. What should I watch out for?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2018 04:49 AM PST

I run a video production agency with 5 employees. Up until now, I have handled all the marketing: built the website, did the SEO, run all the paid ads, manage social, etc. I'm not an expert but it's gotten us to a good point.

For us to get to the next level, our marketing efforts need to be optimized. I considered hiring a full-time marketing director, but the salary I could afford to pay would probably only get a junior-level person and I probably wouldn't be able to provide very valuable direction since again I'm not a professional marketer.

All this leads me to the thought that I should hire a digital marketing agency. Specific goal would be to optimize our inbound marketing pipeline, creating a more regular flow of leads in a very few key categories.

Does anyone have experience hiring a digital marketing agency? With an annual budget of $50,000, what kind of results should I expect? Anything I should watch out for or entirely avoid?

Any and all advice appreciated. Thanks!

Service Business + Online Store idea

    Posted: 24 Dec 2018 03:38 AM PST

Hello all, I'm just a few steps away from going online with my business. While I was working on my concept and the website, I noticed that a small webshop fits well to my idea.

Now I have my doubts if it makes sense to integrate the webshop into the service based homepage.?

Does anyone have experience with such a business (service + online store) to scale it in the future?

Sorry for the language, English isn't my mother language.

    Thank you !

With only cost of living and tax rates in mind, which is the best state to run your small business in?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2018 04:59 PM PST

For reference, I am 26, single, no real physical obligations here in Oregon. I own a marketing company, and all is going well in that regard. While Oregon is beautiful, it has a pretty damn high tax rate for the self employed, along with state income tax, etc. I'm looking to find the best combination of a low cost of living and a low overall tax rate. Apologies if this has been asked before, thanks in advance for the help!

Startup Manufacturing Co - I'm looking for a simple capacity/bottleneck software program or tool.

    Posted: 23 Dec 2018 12:59 PM PST

The manufacturing company I work for has outgrown the abilities of Excel in our attempts to understand capacity at different stations. We've grown in size & complexity such that we need to professionally track the different routes an order might go through (It's not just one production path), identify capacity/bottlenecks, and possibly model the impact of future equipment/employees.

I've already done some searching around but haven't been able to find something simple that fits our needs. We already have a software package that runs the facility and tracks orders but it doesn't have the ability to help with the analysis we need.

Any guidance or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Looking for opportunities to build software for companies

    Posted: 23 Dec 2018 04:53 PM PST

I'm a Software Developer looking for opportunities to build SAAS products for companies and make processes more efficient. Either custom solutions, or solutions that are needed by many.

It seems these days like there is a software product somewhere, that does what you need. But I'm not a business owner so I can't speak with certainty.

Do you guys have any particular areas/tasks for which there exists no software solution or just very bad ones?

    B2B business owners [survey]

    Posted: 23 Dec 2018 11:28 PM PST

    Hi r/smallbusiness,

I'm a B2B business owner (in the making). I'm doing a short survey on getting leads for this kind of business. My focus right now is social media.

I'd really appreciate if you could share your experiences with me. See questions below (only 5):

    1. What type of business do you own? Who are your clients/target clients?

    2. Do you use social media for lead generation? (Linkedin, twitter, fb, etc)

    3. If yes to above, which one do you get the BEST results from?

    4. What's your strategy for lead gen on that platform? What do you do to get leads?

    5. What's the ROI like?

** How many leads a week/month, for example?

** How many actual customers (or revenue if you don't mind)?

** How much does it cost you???

Thanks in advance for your participation!

    Computer Service Business startup

    Posted: 23 Dec 2018 06:43 AM PST

For an introduction, I am only 15 but have a passion for computers and tech, I have built new PCs and reassembled them at least a dozen times over the last year alone.

My goal is to start a computer service business where I work on computers and build computers for people.

I have done a decent amount of research and found that there are only a few "computer service" places in my area and the closest name brand is Fry's which is about a half hour away

I have had some business already and have gotten great reviews.

My question is how could I properly get my name out there in my local area, I am not expecting this to take off any time soon but any business is fantastic news for me

Is it true that I would not qualify for an 8(a) certification if I also have a day job?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2018 08:38 PM PST

I have an actual career and started a side business.

I want to get some of these certifications from the SBA so I can stand out when applying for contracts with various companies in my field as a vendor.

I saw a YouTube video that stated you cannot have any other job if you want to be 8(a) certified.

    Is this true?

    Also, about net worth.

I have the majority of it in retirement accounts that exceed the $250k amount.

    Would that disqualify me?

Help with an agreement (2in1 business)

    Posted: 23 Dec 2018 07:48 PM PST

I know i probably should post this in r/legaladvice but the last time i had a question i got 0 help / troll responses so I'm hoping here is a bit more helpful because I'm genuinely stuck and don't know what to do next before things get ugly and out of hand....

I entered an agreement with someone to help operate half of my business for a period of 6 months with the conditions that they pay half the rent and half the utilities. It's been about two weeks and they decided to call it quits and started taking their inventory while I'm not around. I called them to find out what's going on and they simply said 'we don't like it it's not for us' and that we have no legal ground to stand on so there's no point in trying to make things ugly. They still have a key to my shop but i changed the alarm code. They said they'll be there in a couple days to take the rest of their stuff and i told them not till they pay and they said 'we'll see what the police have to say about you stealing our merchandise' They haven't paid a dime and probably don't plan on it either. What now?

    Anyone have a Hubzone certification?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2018 11:55 AM PST

How difficult is it to get it?

    What are the simple steps?

So far, I registered for my DUN's number and SAM login.

Next step is to wait on my DUN's acceptance so I can fill out the fields in the SAM's system.

    I am a one-person sole proprietor.

My business location is in a Hubzone.

Do I really need a notarized letter?

    Donating to causes

    Posted: 23 Dec 2018 08:00 AM PST

    Hi everyone -

I run a small guiding company that takes people rock climbing, mountaineering, ice climbing, etc.

For 2019, I'm looking to donate 5% of all client payment towards a nonprofit of some kind related to the world of climbing. Either the access fund, the honnold foundation, or something similar (still doing research).

Does anyone here know how I can automatically siphon that 5% to another business like that?

Aside from checks occasionally when I work with colleges or schools, almost all of my payments are processed through PayPal. Is this an option on PayPal?

    Thanks in advance

Can someone explain the difference, if any, between an LLC. and an S-Corp, regarding bank loans & vehicle leases/financing?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2018 07:46 AM PST

Good news is it's time to expand my small-business! Yay!

    1. It is an LLC, I'm the only owner, does that mean they'll be drawing on my personal finances & credit vs the business itself for reference? I've signed for loans in the past as treasurer for an S-Corp, and never had to produce anything other than business info for vehicles or loans.
    2. I've mapped out my needs to expand, it's not too pricey, but will require about $29K up front for a 24 month office space lease (which I'd rather not pull from my personal pocket) , and some decent credit for a vehicle (which I personally have bad credit...but the business has had 1 $5,000 limit credit card for 5 years, and the balance is paid in full every month). I'll be adding staff as well, which (according to plan) should be easily paid by business income.

So with that on the table ... can I go to a lender as a "representative" for the LLC. the same as I did for a corp, or is it going to be a personal inquisition?
