Yelp tried their best to get $ out of you as a business registered on their site. Posted: 22 Dec 2018 04:18 PM PST First of all -- if you're a business, focus on Google reviews more than Yelp reviews. Why? Because Yelp will pull nonsense on you time and time again. It's no secret to many business owners (on Yelp) that they will have perfectly legitimate reviews placed in the "not recommended section." Which is frustrating as hell. I just hoped as long as they didn't take away a huge chunk of my live reviews, then fine. When I relocated my small business to a new city, I had about 35 live reviews and maybe 18 in the "non recommended section". It sucks, but again, as long as the majority of my live reviews stayed live, I could live with it. Fast forward a little over a year later. So I check to see how many reviews are sticking about once a month. Since my relocation, I've had about a dozen new positive reviews. About seven of them went into the "not recommended section." That was as of last month. I literally just checked my Yelp page, and somehow, some way, I went from what was 40 live reviews, to 22 live reviews. Wait. WHAT?! How did I go from having 35 live reviews when I first relocated, to 22 live reviews a little over a year later??? This is ridiculous. Honestly, this was more for me to vent. Because I've read many posts of people saying Yelp tried to strong arm them into buying advertisements in order to get reviews live again. Which is damn joke. What their representatives will say is something along the lines of, "We have an algorithm that determines the legitimacy of a review based off if they have a picture, how many friends they have, how many reviews they leave, etc." Well, their algorithm is damn near 100% inefficient and completely inconsistent. You can go on any business page and see people leaving reviews not meeting the criteria the representatives will tell you that's required. I mean it is absolutely amazing they can get away with this crap. This is precisely why if a client leaves a review, I encourage them to use Google. I haven't had a single review get taken away from them. Vent/rant over. [link] [comments]
Need advice on acquiring a business. Posted: 22 Dec 2018 11:20 AM PST Hello small business community, My friend and I (we'll call him S) have been working in a very specific niche market which is our passion. We've been doing this for well over 2 years and contract ourselves out to manage other owner's businesses as we do not have the funds to start our own at the moment between capital equipment and licensing. The main company we work for (call him W) is a 2-3 man operation and has very close ties with S and I. He recently told us he wanted to sell his business to us and have us pay him back over 5-6 years to cover the cost of the loan since S and I cannot get a business loan. W recently had a stroke and wants out of his business not in 6 years but in 6 weeks because of his extremely ill health. We do not have the money to acquire the business but I have a girlfriend (no knowledge of business/this market) who offered to loan 40% of her net worth for me to acquire this business. S and I planned to be joint owners but this would more or less make him an employee. Girlfriend understands the endgame is something along the lines of myself and S buying her out of the initial investment over time as she would not really benefit the company besides the initial investment. I'm really all over the place and because of the nature of W's health we need to move fast. He has other buyers (other companies I've worked for, so I know he isn't bluffing) who have offered him cash up front but he wants to sell it to us versus a bigger corporation who would take his equipment and customers to their current business. W plans to mentor us for 6 months- 1 year on the sales and accounting end of the business. My girlfriends idea was to purchase it under her name and make S and I employees until we pay her off. What does everyone think of this kind of model? Should I not go into business with my girlfriend? S is worried about the business if something happens between my girlfriend and I. My girlfriend received a hefty inheritance and would use that money for funding. 40% of it. Thanks. [link] [comments]
Product Launch Formula (PLF) by Jeff Walker Posted: 22 Dec 2018 08:09 PM PST Has anybody utilized the Product Launch Formula (PLF) first used by Jeff Walker? Does it work? Could you tell me your experience with PLF and/or Jeff Walker? Thank you! [link] [comments]
Should I make charitable donations through my business or personally? Posted: 22 Dec 2018 02:22 PM PST I make regular personal donations throughout the year, but during the holidays I like to send a bit more. It helps keep me in check how fortunate I am that I don't worry about food, or warmth, medical expenses, etc. It's not a huge amount of money but I have $800 I want to donate this season. The organizations I donate to all support the population my small business serves. I emailed my accountant but not sure when she'll be back to me with the holidays and I'm interested in your feedback TIA from regular lurker, rare poster [link] [comments]
Posted: 22 Dec 2018 10:46 AM PST Good afternoon, I'm down here in California and wanted to start a tutoring business at a location, not from home. I understand applying for all the LLC, which will be quick. The location is offering triple net, so insurance and everything is covered. I've never personally ran a business before in this category, so I just needed some advice if anyone had some on what tax looks like in this department? I know normally it's pretty clear cut and dry that you tax the business on net profit, and you tax the employee for their paycheck. My funds will be limited, the location will be about 5500-6k a month. I'm getting a family loan for about 50k. My liquid is limited, and I don't want to mess anything up. If anyone can give me some know how on how tutoring tax goes. Thank you everyone, and I hope you guys have a great Christmas and Happy New Year. [link] [comments]
Posted: 22 Dec 2018 09:29 AM PST I'd love people's insights on a tricky situation we have. Previous manager set employee's bonus as % of sales over a base level. It was meant to be motivating during busy months. The threshold was too low, so bonus was reached every month. Now we have more employees that will produce more revenue. It's kind-of touchy to go back to the person now and say, "You're crushing the bonus so it's obviously too low. Oh, and we're adding more production so we have to scale it back." Our best idea so far is that the base level be adjusted according to number of employees and hope they understand, OR express that since this is changing there won't be any change in base salary. I would love insights and tips from anyone, especially if you've been in that spot but even if you have a brainstorm of how to correct it. [link] [comments]
Creating an email subscriber list Posted: 22 Dec 2018 08:13 PM PST Hey Y'all! I am about to create an email list for a pre-product launch. For those of you who've built profitable, relevant and large niche email followings, could you tell me how you did it? Also, how did you compile that list of subscribers? How do you then use that list to send out mass emails? Do you use excel/mailchimp or Wix subscription or something else altogether? I will confess that I am an rookie at all of these so you would be doing me a big favor if you could describe this in detail to me. Thank you! [link] [comments]
Posted: 22 Dec 2018 11:58 AM PST Could be a silly question, but just trying to get a grasp on the fundamentals. I have a truck, a power washer, and a bank account. If I form an LLC, how do I "associate" or link up the LLC to those assets so they become property of the LLC to afford me all the benefits. Is it as simple as just putting the assets into the name of the LLC? For example, doing a transfer of ownership of the truck from my personal name to the LLC on the title of the vehicle? That's what I'm presuming but it could more complicated or less and I'm not sure if I'm overlooking something or it's even less involved than that. I know the process for switching bank accounts because banks usually facilitate the whole thing (from a sole prop to LLC, for example). Not sure about these other assets that I want my LLC to 'own' (so to speak). Sorry if this seems ignorant. I'm worried I'll go through the process and cost of forming the LLC and then not operate it properly with respect to this aspect and just waste my effort. Thank you in advance. [link] [comments]
How to get my small business clients? Posted: 22 Dec 2018 05:00 PM PST I operate a business consulting organization where I do things like: a) business plans b) start-up consulting: build website, register business, create business plan, provide consulting advice c) business analysis (strategic plans, business cases, studies, business process, project management training, etc.) I'm offering some free workshops in the area and I've done some direct mail marketing. Now, I'm looking to get some more clients through digital or online marketing. I'm looking to offer my service globally and even remotely (after all, to write a business plan you don't need face-to-face time) Anyone have any ideas how to market my company? My target market is established organizations, start-ups, business investors looking to move to Canada, and prospective business owners. [link] [comments]
Help with starting an outdoor art program for children! Posted: 22 Dec 2018 01:09 PM PST Hi small business community, My good friend and I are starting an outdoor art and education enrichment program for children in California. We are not looking to start a school, just create a quality program that gets kids outdoors completely unplugged and in touch with nature. Her and I both used to work for a similar company which is no longer in business. We both worked at the company for a few years as teachers and as managers, running the business and creating the content so we're very comfortable starting our own. We both have years of childcare and teaching experience and were both artists. We have plenty of clients from families we've known over the years, a solid curriculum, and a place to start (a national forest). However, we don't really know where to start on the business front! Is it better to file as an LLC or LLP? We have plans to create a website (a good friend is designing it) as well as insurance (luckily, another good friend is helping with that). We're just a little unsure what is the smartest way to actually start this business. We've been doing research but this is not necessarily my forte, so it's been a little overwhelming. ANY advice on this would be so very much appreciated!! -A [link] [comments]
Is 3% follower growth on social media enough? Posted: 22 Dec 2018 04:10 PM PST I just started working as an intern at Inclusive Innovation Incubator (In3), which is a small business that dips its toes into several different things that contribute to the community. This would be events and workshops relating to women's empowerment, entrepreneurship, coding/Java/Javascript, fitness, and gaming/esports. I'm starting to take over the duties of the company's digital marketing as well as their social media. Looking at the insights and metrics from the last year, our follower count has had a consistent 3% increase every month. Follower interaction fluctuates based on what events we have and how often we have them, so that's not too much to worry about. I'm aiming for a consistent 6-7% follower growth. How can I increase our outreach and, in time, our follower growth? Here are our social media pages: https://www.facebook.com/In3DC https://www.instagram.com/in3dc Also, I'm new to this subreddit- I hope that I am not breaking any rules with this post. Let me know if I am. [link] [comments]
Website for reimbursing employees electronically? Posted: 22 Dec 2018 12:34 PM PST We use a PEO for payroll, but for reimbursement payment they charge 2%, which I'd prefer to not pay. I use Wells Fargo for some electronic payments, which works pretty well, but an ideal solution would not be bank-affiliated, so I can have our HR run these payments without giving them access to our online bank account. So the service I'm looking for would pull from our bank account using routing/account number, and then send to the employee's routing/account. Anything like that exist? [link] [comments]
Posted: 22 Dec 2018 12:08 PM PST A year ago I filed an LLC out of DE with legal zoom. Things happened and I never used it. I received an email saying I will be charged $299 or a registered agent service in one month from now. They're asking for a document that I've appointed a new registered agent filed with the state or a screenshot of my company's updated information on the states filing office's website. Oh yeah... They're saying I owe them another $181 that is on my bank statement paid a year ago. [link] [comments]
C CORPORATION IN DELAWARE FROM OUTSIDE OF USA Posted: 22 Dec 2018 10:50 AM PST I have been reading about this service from Stripe Atlas https://stripe.com/atlas to incorporate in Delaware. There are many doubts that come to my mind in terms of bureaucracy and how to operate. My business is super small (Making only $300 a month) and I live outside of the USA. It's a membership site to learn Spanish. The Atlas service is amazing because it's only $500 and I would like to use them because they would open me a bank account and I need it for https://anchor.fm/sponsorships for example. The question is, what would be the recurring costs to keep the company alive? I have read that I have to pay the following yearly:
I also need to put a salary to myself for running the company. Now I wonder whether I can put such a low salary to myself (like $300) or there's a minimum. I also read that I need to use a bookkeeping software to keep the records clean. They recommend Xero or Bench. And I will need an accountant but I don't know how much can it cost me and how many times will I need him/her. I'm super afraid of starting it and then not being able to meet al the law requirements. Please, can anyone give me some tips so I can decide whether or not to sign the documents? [link] [comments]
