It’a to get hyped for Monday!!! But for a different reason

    Posted: 23 Dec 2018 07:10 AM PST

First of all, I want to thank everyone in r/accounting for making this one of my favorite places to post. It's a great community and the kind words that people have shared with me have helped me get through some hard times this year.

Now I know a few people have to work tomorrow and so naturally I am pretty jealous, but I promise to drink an eggnog in your honor. But for the majority of people that are off for the holidays, let's remember why we work these long hours, why we study so hard, and why we strive to better ourselves professionally. We do it for our families. Our children who get to wake up Christmas Day with a tree surrounded by presents. Our parents who get to say that are proud of what we do. For our S/O's who stand by our side through busy season, late nights, and our exhaustion after a long day at work.

Take this time and enjoy the long weekend. Spend time with your loved ones and make the most before busy season hits and they don't get to see as much of us. The greatest gift you can give on Monday/Tuesday is the time that you will share and memories you will create. If you do not celebrate the holidays that's totally okay. Enjoy your rest and relaxation because we all know in about two weeks that's all over with lol.

From the bottom of my heart I want to wish everyone a happy holiday and a happy new year! I love you guys and can't wait to bring in 2019 with this wonderful group of people!

Monday's coming boiz and gurlz but this time remember what's truly important. Great friends and a loving family!

I Feel Unprepared For First Real Accounting Job

    Posted: 23 Dec 2018 03:19 PM PST

I'm graduating in May (BS Accounting, 150+ credits, 3.5 GPA), and I'm starting this summer as an associate doing both audit and tax for a regional accounting firm. I can't help feeling that I'm not going to do well. My internships were all corporate in the analytics side of finance (building spreadsheets and eliminating busywork). When I did my Audit and Tax courses, I passed with good grades, but I don't feel like I learned very much. I feel like I'm going to be a real liability when I start. I don't feel like I'm proficient in accounting, and I'm thinking the people who I come in with will be way ahead of me... In addition to directly relevant internships, most will be coming with masters to my bachelors.

What do you expect first-year staff to actually know?

How far behind will I be without an audit/tax internship?

How can I remedy this in 6 months?

    Question to the Excel-Lords

    Posted: 23 Dec 2018 05:12 PM PST

So, I'd like to be better at excel and am working on tutorials and random exercises when I'm not busy because I love the power excel has an would love to be able to wield it with an increased skill.

The problem I am working on now - I want to determine a range of time within a range of time.

    Example: employee A worked from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m..

I want a simple formula that contrasts that time period to other ranges I have: 11-4 lunch, 4-9 dinner, 9-1 a.m. late night.

I want the formula to spit out: Lunch: 5 Dinner 1:30 - for this example. I know it can be done - I'm just unable to wrap my head around it. I would love an answer with an explanation for me to learn from!

    Thank you, sensais

    Certified Financial Services Auditor

    Posted: 23 Dec 2018 08:14 PM PST

Has anyone here taken the exam, if so what specialty did you choose and what sources did you use to study? I'm currently still in school for my masters but I'm already looking for certifications to get beyond CPA, and as I already have a strong interest in financial services this seemed like a no brainer.

    Group prayer at Christmas party?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2018 11:22 AM PST

Has anyone else encountered this? It happened on Thursday and i'm still not sure what to think. It was an explicitly Christian prayer with references to Jesus. I'm at a B4 firm too so it was kinda extra unexpected with how PC they try to be

    When do FLDP programs recruit?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2018 07:47 PM PST

Basically the title. My university is recruited by one of the best FLDP programs but no others. I'd like to be able to apply straight through the company's career sites but I'm not sure what time period I should look for these positions to open up.

Also, does anyone have any experience in getting hired into a FLDP from a non-target? Any tips?

Going from public accounting to a family office

    Posted: 23 Dec 2018 05:57 PM PST

I am debating whether to take an offer for a family office job that would be a vertical move. (Tax associate to senior tax associate)

My question is whether this will completely hinder my long term career growth? I'll still be doing similar tax work as I was at my current firm, but I would be getting additional responsibility and better pay.

Since it's a relatively small family office operation it also may be to much responsibility for my level of experience.. and once I make it to manager I don't see much more growth.

Do I stay in public accounting doing tax or move to family office doing tax?

[CAN] Applying to Big 4 new graduate position, if I'm an experienced staff

    Posted: 23 Dec 2018 09:41 PM PST

I have almost 2 years experience working at a national firm assurance (full time + coops), also passed CFE. If I apply for Big 4 new graduate position/new staff accountant positions, would I be overqualified? Or would I have an advantage over other students with no experience? There aren't many positions at the intermediate level, and don't have the capability to be a senior yet.

    Advice On Studying for FAR?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2018 09:25 PM PST

I just passed my first section of the CPA exam (AUD w/ a 76) and took about 2.5 - 3 months to prepare while being in grad school and working a job. To study (Becker), I watched all the lectures, reviewed most simulations, and repeatedly took the multiple choice tests. My only notes were annotations in the book.

I've just started FAR, and understandably the material feels VERY different. I am definitely struggling to retain more than I did in audit. How should I adjust my study habits. I want to take the test by the end of February/beginning of March. How did you perform calculations while studying (using Excel vs. pen and paper w/ a calculator)? Should I take notes in addition to the annotations? Should I ignore some of the lectures and learn by doing the multiple choice? What advice do you guys have for me? Thanks!

Are my expectations for accounting travelling unrealistic?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2018 04:52 PM PST

I'm a 20, soon to be 21 year old who's looking into being an accountant (or something within accounting field), and perhaps specifically an auditor. I want to travel, albeit not in a conventional way, and my father is an American IRS tax auditor who has the idea that I become an auditor for a company, particularly a prestigious one, and get a transfer abroad for a year or two, and go home. I don't want to do this, instead, I want to do the following, and would like to know whether this is unrealistic and foremost do-able:

a timeline tl;dr: canadian university undergrad degree (it would be done probably in ontario)> cpa certified, programme in quebec hopefully > work in quebec (i want to do this in french and only french) for a few years as internal auditor for some company > get assessed and by France's order of charted accounts and work for 5-7 years/go get a masters done in France for accounting (and get assessed still if need be), get hired by a company and work for there for a few years

I tried not typing much, but obviously I'm typing this under the implication that all language needs (both certification and pragmatically wise) in addition to saved finances for, say, graduate university degree, will be met.

Busy Season Rules... This could also go on r/Iamverybadass or r/cringe if you ask me

    Posted: 22 Dec 2018 10:40 PM PST

Hey there! Just a tax to audit question.

    Posted: 23 Dec 2018 07:25 PM PST

So I do the tax job well. I'm mostly on 1120s but the fact that I'll be having less exit ops makes me want to jump to audit as I'm not going to stay in B4 for long. Also that I'm more inclined towards accounting, I'm guessing audit will help me prepare for a senior accounting role after few years. I'm only 6 months in and my firm will only let me jump after another year. So should quit my job now and concentrate on my CPA or wait till I get to transfer?

It'll be great if you guys can leave out an advice!
